Subj: Thick white discharge
Date: 1/29/2011
I am pregnant and I have been having thick white discharge for about a month now. I had a PAP done in Dec. and my doctor said I was ok…but the discharge is still coming and when my boyfriend and I have sex it gets all over his penis and it dries up into little balls??

Tracy

AskDocWeb: Many women report having a thick white discharge while pregnant and most of the time it is normal and harmless. A lot of women experience this throughout their pregnancy. You may want to keep some panty liners or panty shields handy. If you notice an odor or start itching then it could be a yeast infection. Of course if you suspect a STD then contact your doctor.

Subj: Expired birth control pills
Date: 2/4/2011
My birth control is 2 year expired but I’ve been bleeding for a month but I have no insurance to get birth control so I started to take it and my bleeding seem to be under control I am not on my no hormores pills… will it stop my period as soon as take the next pack??? Thanx

Lulu

AskDocWeb: Taking any medication that is expired is not recommended. Every medication loses effectiveness over time. That is why they have an expiration date. Do you really want to use a birth control pill that is working at 50% effectiveness? If you have any doubt, call your pharmacist.

Please dispose of expired medication properly. DO NOT FLUSH MEDS! Too many drugs are showing up in the nation’s drinking water because the water treatment facilities are unable to filter them out. Many communities have started drop-off locations or special collection days to insure safe disposal of drugs. Some pharmacists will take expired medication but make sure they don’t just flush the drugs. If they do then you might want to handle the safe disposal yourself. Crush the meds and mix them in to cat litter or coffee grounds, wrap with newspaper, and throw it in the household trash.

Subj: Missed taking a pill
Date: 2/7/2011
My wife missed taking her pill (camila) for one day. She took two pills the next day. We had sex that night. Can she get pregnant?

Dave

AskDocWeb: Yes she can. The patient information for Camila (Generic Name: norethindrone) says that every time a pill is taken late, and especially if a pill is missed, you are more likely to get pregnant. It also cautions that if a pill is missed, use a back-up method of birth control (such as condom and/or spermicide) every time you have sex for the next 48 hours. About 1 out of 200 women using this pill will get pregnant in the first year of use, even if it is taken perfectly (that means on time, every day). Taking pills late or missing pills can also result in spotting or bleeding.

Subj: Taking cyclen
Date: 2/8/2011
After how many days does cyclen birth control become effected. if you become pregnant will taking cyclen will it kill the baby?

Evette

AskDocWeb: Ortho Tri-Cyclen needs to be taken for 7 consecutive days in order to get the maximum protection the pill provides. If you become pregnant while on this pill, it will not kill the baby. There is no conclusive evidence that oral contraceptives cause any problems if used during early pregnancy but the patient information clearly states that you should stop taking them if you become pregnant.

Subj: Bigger breast
Date: 2/11/2011
i have been taking sprintec birth control and it has made my breast bigger. and i heard that that will go away will it? cause i will soon be switching to ortho tri cyclen lo and that also makes your breast grow ive heard. lol personally i orginally have a small chest before starting birth control.. i kinda dont want it to go away.. will it?

Brianna

AskDocWeb: Both birth control pills have known to increase breast size for a small percentage of users. The breast enlargement caused by birth control pills lasts only as long as you take then.

Subj: Risk for pregnancy?
Date: 2/11/2011
I have been on several different kinds of birth control for 4 1/2 years now. I am currently on Trinessa and have been for a few years. I recently skipped 3 pills on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I took my pill Sunday morning and had unprotected sex on Sunday night with my boyfriend ejaculating in me. Could I be at risk for pregnancy? Also I have skipped pills here and there from months before.

Ashley

AskDocWeb: Yes, you are past the risk point and into the possibility of being pregnant. If you miss 2 or more pills there is a risk of pregnancy. All of the birth control pill manufacturers recommend keeping a back-up form of birth control on hand for just such occasions.

Subj: No period
Date: 2/12/2011
I had a abortion in Nov. and got the Depo shot the same day. I was bleeding for 3 months, so I went to my doc. and she said it was normal ect. and I was so worried about being pregant, I took some tests and turned out I’m not pregant. I started the Ortho Tri-Cyclen in Jan. when it came time for my period I still haven’t started, I’m worried I might be pregant. Is it normal to not have a period the first time and month of taking this birth control?

Rachael

AskDocWeb: It is not unusual, switching from one birth control pill to another is known to sometimes cause amenorrhea (no period).

Subj: Really bad mood swings
Date: 2/15/2011
I’ve been on Ortho tri-cyclen lo for about 8 months and my first couple of months were fine. I didn’t have any weight gain, nausea or mood swings at all. Then about 5 months into taking the pill I started to get really bad mood swings that have only gotten worse and are putting a strain on my relationship with my boyfriend. I get mad at little things that never would have bothered me at all. I throw things, and my mood swings border on depression. I have always been a very happy-go-lucky type of person. I have a year of Ortho-tri-cyclen lo and I was going to just take it for my last 4 or 5 months but I am thinking after reading everyone else’s comments that I might get my birth control changed now.

Shanese

Subj: Soreness in both nipples and sciatica pain
Date: 2/23/2011
I began using Ortho-Tri lo two months ago, although this has been my second time using this contraceptive. I experienced the same 2-3 week duration of bleeding/ cramping/ PMS symptoms after the placebo pills as alot of women do, and still continued the second pack. However, I missed consecutive pills and decided to just eliminate the remainder of the pack- I didn’t get any bleeding at all….no period, no spottting.
It has been six weeks since stopping the pills, and I am just now having awful soreness in both nipples, and terrible sciatica pain- both of which I had with my first pregnancy. However, I had sex for the first time only two days ago since before starting the prescription. The soreness has continued now for a full week, but I have no other indications of a period as I usually do. I know that my menstrual cycle may take time to regulate, but is this normal?

Normal side effects?

AskDocWeb: The sore nipples are fairly common when switching birth control pills. However, sciatica pain is not listed among the side effects for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.

Subj: Am I safe?
Date: 2/24/2011
I’ve Been on trinessa for a week now and my husband ejaculated inside me twice. Am I safe?

kari

AskDocWeb: According to the patient information, you have the full protection provided by the pill after taking it for seven consecutive days.

Subj: What can I do to stop bleeding?
Date: 2/25/2011
I’m now taking orthro tri-cyclen i missed 2 active blue pills in the 3rd week, so i started a new pack that same day however i started spotting two days later now its been 6 days and its heavier like a period but its not. What can i do to stop bleeding?

Tasha

AskDocWeb: Sorry Tasha, you can’t stop the bleeding, just like you can’t stop your period. The only thing to do is wait it out. When you miss pills for a few days, this causes an “artificial” period like the one you experience at the end of your cycle. It sounds like this is what you are experiencing and if it is it’s normal. Because you started the new pack, that “threw off” your cycle. Of course if you suspect implantation bleeding, check with your doctor.

Subj: Tri Sprintec
Date: 3/5/2011
Is this where I can ask a question about Tri Sprintec?

Tricia

AskDocWeb: Yes, this forum started out about Ortho Tri-Cyclen but it has branched out to cover all kinds of birth control pills. What is your question?

Subj: Missing a couple of days
Date: 3/7/2011
I have recently taken ortho. for the first month of taking it I had to get on antibiotics for strep and so im sure that made it stop working effectively. but the second month I started taking it and I missed a couple of days and on the second day I noticed that I was bleeding. and my period isnt due for another 10 days. is that a side effect or normal for random bleeding to happen after missing a couple of days or just taking it in general?

Becca

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is not unusual to experience spotting or bleeding after missing 2 days in a row. You might say that is a side effect of not following the instructions. Remember that missing a pill increases your risk of becoming pregnant, which is a good reason for always having alternative birth control on hand.

Subj: Weight loss pills with birth control pills?
Date: 3/7/2011
I’m drinking weight loss pill, I wonder if I can drink birth control pills at the same time.

Michelle

AskDocWeb: Many women on birth control pills also use diet pills to help them lose weight. Read more feedback
