AskDocWeb: The patient information for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo says that you do not need to use a back-up form of birth control if you miss only one pill and make it up the next day by taking 2 pills – you are still protected. If you have trouble remembering to take your pills on time talk to your healthcare provider about how to make it easier or about the possibility of using another form of birth control.
9 day period
Date: 6/28/2012
I started BC on 6-5-12 and I got my period 6-18-12 it was on before I started my green pills. I understand that my body has to get use to it but my period has been bleeding heavy and its been 9 days of it what should I do?
Tye
AskDocWeb: Menstrual flow varies greatly between women but if your menstrual flow is soaking through enough sanitary towels or tampons to require changing them more than every hour or two, or your period lasts longer than 7 days, you are probably experiencing menorrhagia and should consult with your doctor.
2 months after the pill abortion
Date: 7/3/2012
I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen for about 3 months now and I am experiencing symptoms of pregnancy. I am a religious birth control taker and have never missed a pill. 2 months ago I had a pill abortion and now I am on the green (sugar) pills and I have not started my period. I took a couple tests and they came out negative. Is there a possiblity that I am pregnant? Are these normal side effects when taking the pill?
Kindra
AskDocWeb: Hopefully you did the follow up visit to confirm that the pill abortion was successful. The patient information for the abortion pill says that you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if more than 24 hours have passed after taking the pill and you begin to experience:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- “flu-like” symptoms, such as weakness, with or without abdominal discomfort or pain
The most common side effects of taking Ortho Tri Cyclen are listed here.
Sleepy?
Date: 7/13/2012
Is it normal for ortho tri cyclen lo to make u sleepy?
Tristan
AskDocWeb: No, it is not normal. Unusual fatigue is one of the warning signs that should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.
Heart burn?
7/15/2012
I started taking ortho tri-cyclen lo about a week ago and the past couple of days I’ve been having some pretty uncomfortable heart burn. Could there be any relation between the pill and my heart burn?
Draeque
AskDocWeb: Heartburn is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Unfortunately some cardiac problems can mimic heartburn. This is why it is important to pay attention to what your body is telling you. Unexplained chest pain should be evaluated by your doctor.
Missing two days
7/18/2012
I missed two days of my pills days 12 and thirteen i immediately took my pill the day after. I spotted as it does when i miss days, but the day i spotted i had protected sex, now im cramping and bleeding like it’s my period. Is this normal when you missed days and is there a risk of pregnancy?
Luna
AskDocWeb: Missing two or more pills does increase the risk of pregnancy, which is why it is a good idea to always have a back-up form of birth control available. You could become pregnant if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss pills. The more pills you miss the more likely you are to get pregnant.
Missing pills can cause cramping, spotting or bleeding between periods. This may also cause a change in the timing of your next period however that usually evens out the following month.
Diet pills?
7/20/2012
I’m on implanon and I gain so much weight if I take diet pills will I lose weights?
Ira
AskDocWeb: That depends on which diet pill you are considering as well as a number of other factors. We have seen several reports by women using Implanon that it made losing weight difficult if not impossible. In clinical studies, the mean weight gain for Implanon users (in the USA) was 2.8 pounds after one year and 3.7 pounds after two years. However, in those studies, weight gain was significant enough that 2.3% of users had the implant removed because of it.
My ovaries have aching feeling
7/24/2012
I was put on Ortho Tri-Cyclen about 8 and a half months ago because I have a cyst in my left ovary.. I noticed 2 weeks after my period I get these cramps that last all the way until my period starts and through it but stop when my period is over(2 weeks), is this normal? My doctor has been trying to find the cause but hasn’t yet, after 3 months. I stll have the cyst and I guess we’re going to take the watch and wait approach.
Today, exactly 2 weeks until my period, I haven’t felt any cramping but I have noticed abnormal discharge.. The last time I had unprotected sex was 3 days ago. I’m 15 years old and thinking something might be going on, like birth control failure or pregnancy? But I haven’t gotten pregnant after 8 months on these pills so there could be other possibilities? I woke this morning and as I stood I noticed that both sides of my ovaries had this aching feeling… but I couldn’t feel it when I laid back down.? I need some thoughts/answers.. PLEASE HELP 🙂

AskDocWeb: Cysts are very common in women, especially during the childbearing years. Often they form when the egg is not released or when the sac holding the egg doesn’t dissolve after the egg is released. Although ovarian cysts usually cause no symptoms they can create a dull ache or a sharp pain if one twists or ruptures. Since most ovarian cysts go away on their own “watchful waiting” is often recommended if you don’t have any bothersome symptoms. Have they ruled out sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea or chlamydia? Those STDs are common causes of ovarian pain.
Error in thinking
7/24/2012
Hello, My girlfriend has been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for a number of months now. We are going on vacation in a couple of weeks, but she is due for her period the same week. She decided to switch weeks two and three around (thinking that this would make her period come a week earlier) so she would end up not having it while on vacation. So she ended up taking week one, three, two, and is getting ready to start four. We have found out now that this is not the case with triphasic pills. We had unprotected sex eleven days ago and I did not know she was trying this. My question is, will this have an effect on the ability of Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo to prevent pregnancy? We have worried ourselves sick with trying to find an answer and have only found opinions. As long as there are hormones being administered to the body it must bolster protectiveness at least to a degree? Please help us be able to put an end to our search for answers. Thank you so much in advance.
Tyler
AskDocWeb: As a general rule; any time you don’t follow the directions with birth control pills, you increase the risk of pregnancy. We suggest that she discuss this with her doctor so that she understands the directions. Changing her pills around like that is also likely to cause other problems such as withdrawal bleed, cramps and spotting.
