Want to switch back
10/2/2012
I have been on ortho cyclen for almost two months straight. 1 more month until I cycle. It is giving me a yeast infection, and I want to switch back over to my ortho tri cyclen. I have about 6 ortho cyclen pills left. Can I start a new pack of ortho tri cyclen now, and continue through the pack until I cycle at the end of it, instead of finishing the pills of ortho cyclen I have left?
Kristin
AskDocWeb: Please remember that birth control pills are prescription drugs and any change in your treatment should first be discussed with your doctor. This will also give you the opportunity to ask about what you think is a yeast infection. There are other conditions that produce the same symptoms.
Taking pills late
10/5/2012
So I have been taking my pills am always either an hour or two or three or 4. it always ranges between that 4 hour period. Is it still effective?
Jordan
AskDocWeb: Yes Jordan, it is still effective. Ortho Tri-cyclen® is an estrogen and progestin “combined-hormone” pill. They must be taken once a day, but they don’t need to be taken at the same time every day. With that said, taking them at the same time every day does make it easier to remember when it is time to take them.
Please Note: The above is not true for all birth control pills. If you are taking progestin-only pills, it’s best to take them at the same time every day. They may be a lot less effective if you take them more than three hours later than usual. If this happens, a backup method of birth control is recommended, like a latex or female condom for the next two days (48 hours).

Kaylee
AskDocWeb: Gabapentin is not known to have any effect on the effectiveness of Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo in preventing pregnancy.
Anxiety attacks
10/16/2012
Hey I have been taking my ortho tri cyclen regularly. How ever I been having anxiety attacks so I was out on fluxotetine. I’m on my sugar pills right now but I haven’t started yet. Can anxiety cause you to miss your period?
Anxiety
AskDocWeb: Yes, physical and emotional stress can delay periods, and anxiety produces both. It is not unusual to miss a period if you’re under a LOT of stress.
Fertility test?
10/22/2012
I was on tri-cycline for 20+ years. I have been off for 2 months and no period. Is there a fertility test I could take to see if I still need b/c. I am 48.
Susan
AskDocWeb: There are ovulation sticks that you can get from your local drug store. They work a lot like a pregnancy test. They tell you if you are ovulating or not. A quick check at Walgreens drugstore and it looks like they sell more than two dozen kinds of female fertility tests.
Where is my period?
10/29/2012
I’ve been on Ortho tri cyclen for about 3 and a half years and I haven not gotten my period yet I took a test and I’m not pregnant i just can’t figure out where my period is I have all the symptoms but no bleeding what’s wrong?
Kaitlyn
AskDocWeb: Depending on your age, you may be going through menopause. During the childbearing years women need to have a GYN checkup once a year whether something is wrong or not. It may not be a fun exam but it needs to be done. Your doctor can run some tests to sort this out.
Is it normal to maybe miss a period?
11/2/2012
I have been taking Ortho Tricyclen Lo for a while now, about a year and a half and I just missed my last light blue pill. I realized it the next morning 6am(about 12 hours after I usually take it-which is 5 pm) and took it right away. Then that same day I took the next pill (only about 10 hours after I had taken the previous forgotten one) Today is Friday and I was supposed to get my period on Wednesday(the fourth dark green pill day). I did have protected (condom) sex once during the 28 day cycle. Obviously I am worried, but I just want to know what to do? Is it normal to maybe miss a period? I am crampy and it feels like I usually do when I have it, but no blood. Please let me know what to do. Thank you.
Nervous
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you followed directions in that you took the missed pill as soon as you remembered it and took the next pill at the regular time so you should be okay.
While missing a period can be a cause for concern, it does not always mean that you are pregnant. It is perfectly normal to miss a period once in a while however, if the missed period continues for a prolonged period of time, it is important to take a pregnancy test. If not pregnant, consult with your doctor to determine if there is something more serious going on with your body.
Here are some of the reasons why you might miss a period:
- Being overweight or underweight can cause you to miss a period. Hormones are the determining factor for when you go through your monthly menstruation cycle. A dramatic change in weight can affect your hormones. Being overweight can hormonally shift your cycle and can even stop them. However, most women can return to their normal monthly cycle and fertility when they lose some weight. The reverse is also true.
- Being underweight can also cause irregular cycles and in some cases even stop the menstrual cycle. If you don’t have enough body fat, you usually do not have regular periods. If your periods stop altogether, it is called amenorrhea. Gaining weight to a healthy level is the best way to get your periods back on track.
- Illness is a common reason to miss a period. While the body is healing from an infection or illness, it can cause a lot of stress which can cause a delay in the menstrual cycle. Your cycle should return on schedule once the illness is over. However, if it does not, this is not normal and you should consult with your doctor.
- Both mental and physical stress can cause you to miss a period. Stress may also cause your cycle to be delayed for a few days or a couple weeks.
- Changes in medications can also be a cause in a missed period. Some medications affect your hormones, which can disrupt your body’s typical cycle. When getting a new prescription be sure to ask about the side effects of the medication. Delayed or missed periods might be a completely normal side effect of the new med.
- Changing schedules can also be another reason to miss your period. This might throw off your body’s internal clock. This is especially true for women who fluctuate between staying up late or going to bed early.
- Many teen girls who have only had their periods for a few years are very likely candidates for missing a period. Often it can take up to 10 years for a woman’s period to regulate. This is why many teens will miss a period one month with no other reason except that their period has not regulated yet. However, if you are worried then it is a good idea to meet with your doctor to determine if it is simply an irregular period or something more serious.
- Of course pregnancy is an obvious reason for missing a period. If you are at risk for being pregnant and miss your period, it is a good idea to take a pregnancy test to find out if you are pregnant or not. If you are not pregnant, the cause of the missed period is probably one of the reasons above.
As you can see there are many reasons why you might miss a period. If you miss more than one period, it is time to consult with your doctor.
