I have been taking the Depo Provera shot for the past 3 yrs and I have finally noticed all my problems are due to this form of hormonal contraceptive and I am NOT getting any more shots…This shot “runs out” in Jan 03. I’ve experienced, about 20lbs of weight gain over the past 3 yrs, blurred vision, depression, anxiety, hot flashes, joint stiffness, troubles sleeping, or wanting to sleep all day, absolutely NO interest in sexual activity (I joke this is why nobody gets pregnate on it!), and a major reduction in vaginal lubrication. This is nothing I want to live with for the rest of my life..I’m sorry it took me this long to find out all of these problems were due to Depo!

Marie

AskDocWeb: We would like to hear from others who have switched from Depo Provera to ortho tri-cyclen. If that’s you, how about sharing your experiences with others.

Subj: Jitterness?
I recently started taking the ortho tri-cylen pill a few weeks ago… I am on my 2cond week and had the vomiting spell and now for the last couple of days when I take them a little while later i feel as though i am about to jump out of my skin! I’m not taking any other kind of pills or medicine and was wondering if any one else has had this effect?

Subj: nausea and Ortho Tri-Cyclen
I began taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen about a week ago and every day since then I have had bouts of nausea that occur several hours after I take the pill. I know this is probably normal, but how soon can I expect it to go away?

Also, is there a way to avoid nausea? I would ask my doctor for a different pill but I have acne and would like to clear it up as soon as possible. I am taking the pill because I will soon be starting Accutane for my acne.

Tigger

AskDocWeb: Many times nausea can be avoided by eating something when you take your pill. Also avoid laying down after taking it.

Subj: how long should I wait?
After going off of ortho tricyclen, how long should I wait before trying to get pregnant? Do I need to wait at all? Any info would be appreciated.

Karen

AskDocWeb: No need to wait at all. Just enjoy each other. It’s more fun than trying and in some cases, more effective.

Subj: Please Help
I’m currently taking Ortho Tri Cycle and I was wondering about something. My sides have a pain in them and I was wondering if this is a normal side effect coming from the pill? It just makes my whole lower body ache. Please send me some feedback ASAP so I know if I should stop taking this and try something else!

Caren

AskDocWeb: As with most symptoms, there is more than one possible cause. Drinking too much carbonated liquid can damage your liver (personal experience) and would give you a side ache. So would an obstructed bowel. The decision to try something else should be made with your doctor’s help.

Hi, I’ve been taking the pill now for 4 days and have this horrible, heartburn like feeling all day long since the second day. I have a heaviness in my chest that goes all the way down to my abdomenon I am also a bit nauseous and have vomited once. I’m concerned that this will go on for months before my body gets used to the medication.

Anna

AskDocWeb: Anytime you experience symptoms that concern you, talk to your doctor.

I have been on Ortho-tri Cyclen for almost 2 years and have not had any of the side effects, not even bigger boobs :(, but I had a slight weight gain.

Subj: Depo vs. Ortho
Date: 3/22/2003
I have only been on Ortho a month and am having some minor side effects. But I am mainly writing to advise women not to go with the Depo. I was on it for a year, after the birth of my son. The doctors suggested it was the best way to go and i was given no list of side effects or much information for that matter.

I stopped having my period within month, and further down the road lost sexual interest, had mood swings, depression, ect.. and my breasts swelled, and secreted liquid, which of course the doctors all told me were normal. I continued to have problems and went through at least 5 doctors. I went off the pill after a year, and still the problems persisted for another year after. My period had not returned, I had been on hormone treatment, and so forth with no results.

I believe further research should be done in this matter, and the public should not be used as a guinea pig until after the research is completed. Now i realize many have said these things before, but i was 17 when i started the depo, and now I’m going on 22 and just getting over the medical experiences i had from the depo. I would highly recommended that woman research before allowing doctors to give them anything that regards their hormones, unfortunately i had to find out the hard way. I hope this helps someone who is contemplating depo vs. another form of birth control.

How long do you have to stop from using the pill in order to get pregnant. I have been on Ortho Tricyclen for almost 3 years. I love it and it has never given me any side effects. Could you answer my question. Thanks

Amber

AskDocWeb: That depends on where you are in your cycle when you stop taking the pills. You know that the pill prevents the ovaries from preparing an egg and sending it to the uterus. Discontinuing the pill will allow that to happen the next time you reach that point in your cycle.

Subj: Severe Vomiting after consuming alcohol
Date: 4/6/2003
I recently got on the pill (about 3 months ago). I don’t drink heavily, however I do like to go out on the weekends and have a few drinks with my friends. Since I’ve been on Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo I’ve experienced SEVERE vomiting for hours on end after 3 or 4 beers for the night (it feels like my esophagus is going to disintegrate). I was just wondering if this is normal. I have a lot of friends on Ortho and none of them have this problem. Have you heard of anyone else having this problem?

AskDocWeb: There is nothing about this listed in the side effects however, there are a few reports of an increased sensitivity to alcohol in those using Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Is it safe to ejaculate inside of my wife while making love? We have both been wondering if it is safe or are we taking a risk even though she is on the pill?

David

AskDocWeb: That is one of the reasons why people take the pill – So they don’t have to worry about that.

I have been on ortho tri-cyclen for about a year and a half. As for the nausea as one woman wrote, i still experience it time to time, especially if i have to double up. Most especially if its the white pill i have to double up on (whew!!). what i have found to work the best is if i take nearly the same time every day. i can detect slight changes even if i take it five hours later than my regular time.

MY problem is the mood swings. i don’t know if its my own imbalances or if its due to the pill (lets hope its the pill). i’m overly sensitive, often down or depressed, and severely so around the time of my period. i’ve contemplated coming off the pill so i could feel normal again. My doctor didn’t have much to say as far as my mood is concerned. I wonder if any other women have experienced the same problems. i’m not NORMALLY a raging bitch. i swear.

Hello. I am a 19 year old female and I have been on ortho tri-cyclen for about three months and I have experienced three bladder infections and concurring yeast infections. I have had the same partner for a year and never had problems before, but now it is painful durring intercourse and I am afraid to even have intercourse most of the time.

I have also been very moody and often times overly sensitive, mostly a depressing feeling. I switched from estrostep, which I had no problems with, but it wasn’t covered by my insurance, which is why I switched to ortho.

Are my sypmtoms due to ortho? And if so, do I have to give my body a chance to addapt to the change? Or should I try an alternate route? thank you

AskDocWeb: Most have adapted after a month or so. You might want to explore alternatives. The recurring yeast infections can be very frustrating. Like antibiotics, birth control pills can increase your likelihood of getting yeast infections. If it continues to be a problem, ask your doctor about a course of Diflucan. Another possibility with recurring yeast infections is that your partner may be reintroducing the yeast. Make sure you are fully over the infection before engaging in sex.

I was taking Depo shots for approximately a year. I was constantly moody, depressed, and angry. After I decided to come off of Depo and switch to Ortho Tri-Cyclen I have been much happier. I haven’t noticed any significant mood swings. I have better periods with less bleeding, and my skin has improved as well. I am much happier.

Subj: Info to share… using Ortho for ENDOMETRIOSIS
Date: 6/17/2003
I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen for over 3 years (since i was 18) solely to treat my endometriosis. It took about three months of feeling sick and nauseated every day at the beginning to get used to it, but once my body adjusted to it, it was great. It really decreased the pain from cramps, regulated my period, and my face is beautifully smooth, but I did need to get a bigger bra size after I started it.

I was recently recommended Depo by my ob/gyn, but have heard SO many people advise against it. Go with Ortho, and if you suspect ENDOMETRIOSIS, give it a try, it helped me!!

I have been taking ortho tri-cyclen for about 3 weeks now and the past week and half I have experienced a nervous, almost butterfly feeling in my stomach along with what I call heart palpitations. A blood pregnancy test was done a couple of days ago, which came out negative, so that ruled that out. Plus my doctor listened to my heart, and heard an irregularity. I received the ortho from my gyno, and I saw my regular doctor for my problems.

My gyno put me on ortho because I have polycystic ovaries, and the lack of period, acne and hair growth to go with it. He thought this may help, since I am not interested in having another child at the moment, I presently have an 18 month old daughter whom I am very grateful to have.

My mom suggested I go on-line to see if I could find any known side effects. Thank you for the info everyone, it now gives me a better grasp on what may be happening to me.

I too have been on depo-provera when I was 18 (now 26) I had one shot which made me gain 40 pounds and when I went off of it I bleed almost constantly for about 9 months. The only thing stopping it was the reg. birth control pills that I was put on at the time by a different doctor. So I too have never recommended depo to any one, nor have I ever heard anything good about it since from anyone.

Thanks again.

Subj: how long should I wait?
Date: 8/19/2003
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen for almost a month am I okay to not wait anymore? (to have sex?)

AskDocWeb: The company recommends a backup contraceptive for the first two weeks, after that, it’s okay.

I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for 3 months now. During the first day or two of my period, The blood seems to be very dark, almost black. Is this normal? I haven’t been able to find anything like this on the web.

Tara

AskDocWeb: The longer it takes to go from the vein to the pad, the darker the blood will be. It is not an indicator of danger, just a slow rate of flow.

Subj: Birth control and weight loss
Date: 9/5/2003
Is there any birth control pill that will help you lose weight?

Vanessa

AskDocWeb: To date, all the birth control pills we have looked at have the tendency to increase weight in the user. Some more than others, depending on individual metabolism and the body’s response to steroids. Most weight gain is 10-20 pounds over a 1 to 2 year period.

I am almost done with my second month of ortho tri-cyclen lo. I did have a bit of nausea at the beginning, but it went away after about 5 days. Now my face seems to be sensitive. I used to be pretty blessed with good skin. Now my face is flaring up, but it isn’t regular pimples, they burn and itch and my face will feel hot in that area. When my boyfriend gives me a kiss if his face barely touches mine, it will burn for hours afterwards. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this kind of side effect. Read more feedback
