Subj: Something wrong with Lo
Date: 3/29/2005
I knew something was wrong when I started taking Ortho TriCyclen Lo last week. The 2nd day I had headaches that lasted through the night – I would even wake up with it still throbbing. I have had nausea everyday, and terrible MOOD Swings. I have been so Irritable and tired. Now I am in my 2nd week and am experiencing diarrhea. I remember taking Orthocyclen not the TriCyclen and being fine. I think I am going to call my doc today and switch.

Sabrina

AskDocWeb: Sounds good.

Subj: Heavy periods and horrible cramps
Date: 3/29/2005
I’ve been taking ortho-lo for 2.5 months now(after taking depo for 4 years, then nothing for 2 years). I never bleed when I am supposed to. It always happens on the third cycle, and I am experiencing heavy periods and horrible cramps. I also don’t have the energy I used to have. It has helped my face a little though. Any suggestions? Should I switch?

Carissa

AskDocWeb: It does sound like you would benefit from switching to another birth control.

I have been taking ortho tricyclen for 5 years up until about 8 months ago I started to have breakthrough bleeding. I would start my period a week early. SO I got off the pill for a month but I broke out with acne so I started taking it again. But this month and last month I have had severe headaches, bloating, irritability, depression and anxiety. There will also be times I get extremely paranoid and I have chest pain and shortness of breath. I just finished my period and I am to the point that I can not handle these pills anymore. I have always been a happy girl so I think it is the pill.

Subj: Having pregnancy symptoms
Date: 3/30/2005
I started taking ortho tri lo about a month and a half ago. For the first month I felt pretty normal and thought “woohoo, a pill with no side effects”. However, for the last few days I’ve been having pregnancy like symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, and sleepiness. I’ve also noticed that I am just not happy and just want to cry all the time. I’m not me! My boyfriend and I had sex the night before I started the “inactive” pills from my first pack. He did “go” in me cause he thought we were safe since I had been on the pill for 3 weeks. Now I’m starting to wonder if I’m pregnant w/ these symptoms I’m having. I’m about a week and a half away from starting the “inactive” pills on my second pack. Any suggestions on if my symptoms are related to the pill or should I go buy a home test?

Jill

AskDocWeb: These same side effects have been reported by others. To be on the safe side, use a home pregnancy test. They’re the same ones used in a clinic but cost less.

Subj: Early period
Date: 3/30/2005
I have been on orth-tricyclen lo for about 3 to 4 months, before that I was on Yasmin. I’m currently on my row of pills that comes directly before the week I get my period. I got my period today, a week early? I had sex with my BF 3 weeks ago but used a condom. Is getting my period a week early just a side effect? It has never happened to me before. Please write back soon.

Jess

AskDocWeb: It could be but, there are other reasons for your period to start early, stress for example.

Subj: Ortho Lo is a disaster
Date: 3/30/2005
I was on Ortho Lo for about a year. What a disaster. No wonder women do not get pregnant on it, you simply don’t have the drive to do so. PLUS my cholesterol went from normal to very high. I didn’t gain wait but I was nauseous and emotional and I felt undesired and sluggish all the time. I just stopped it a week ago. Haven’t regained my old self yet but I am soooo looking forward to it.. SAY NO TO ORTHO LO

Subj: Will this ever go away?
Date: 3/31/2005
This is my second month on ortho tri cyclen. The first month, I had problems with breakthrough bleeding but that went away. I started my second pack on Sunday and have had severe nausea the last 3 days. I’ve been taking it with food. It is interfering with my work and I’m contemplating stopping the pill. Will this ever go away?

Cherri

AskDocWeb: It is often recommended that you wait until the end of the third month. If your symptoms do not go away by then, discuss changing your birth control with your doctor.

Subj: Hair loss with ortho
Date: 4/2/2005
I was on regular Ortho tri cyclyn caused my hair to fall out in clumps. Then switched to ortho tri lo same thing happened. The only good thing about ortho is that it cleared my acne The Hair thing, forget about it. My doctor told me that’s not the cause sorry to say but bull sh*t. They don’t know. Same thing happened with my friends.

Subj: Skipped 2 days
Date: 4/2/2005

I have been on the pill for 6 months however, I started my renewal pack on Tuesday instead of Sunday. I took 2 pills on Tuesday and 2 pills on Wednesday and continue taking the pills one day at a time. But I had sex on that Tuesday and Friday. On both those days I used Vaginal Contraceptive Foam (VCF Brand). They were the only one that had the most spermicide 12.5% and non-x-9.

I didn’t use a condom with it only the foam. I inserted it 5 minutes before intercourse. Saturday I noticed that a clear discharge that looks like snot (mucus). From my understanding that is a form of Ovulation, right. So now I am worried. But on the direction on the pill it says to use a Condom OR Spermicide. But when I look online I see a lot of web pages that says spermicide works better with a condom. Since I have the Pills in my system from previous months does that help at all?

Sweets

AskDocWeb: The discharge may have been the spermicide that you used. Since you took two pills two days in a row, you have disrupted your cycle. You shouldn’t worry about getting pregnant with the precautions you have wisely taken. And your final question, the pills you have in your system from previous months have nothing to do with right now so don’t depend on them being still in your system.

Subj: Go for it
Date: 4/3/2005
well, I started Orthro tri-cyclen lo about 2 months ago. For the first 2 weeks or so I definitely was a little snappy with people. I also had spotting for about a week my third week. Other then those two things I am more then happy with the product. I was very nervous about weight gain but I have actually lost some weight since being on the pill. If anyone is thinking about going on this pill I would definitely go for it.

Happy

AskDocWeb: From what we’ve been reading, not everyone shares your enjoyment of this.

Subj: Acne with birth control
Date: 4/3/2005
I never took bcp before, but I started taking ortho lo for the first time. I stopped after just one week because my skin broke out really bad and I’ve never had acne. After just three days of being off of the pill my face cleared up so I knew it was the pill. My prescriber switched me to ortho novum 7/7/7. I’ve been taking them for a week, and my face is breaking out again. Maybe I should try regular ortho tricylen.

Subj: Weight loss
Date: 4/3/2005
I have been on ortho cyclen for 7 years and have gained about 10 pounds gradually. If I work extra hard I can lose the weight but always gain it back when I ease up on the diet. I recently stopped taking BC pills and have noticed a big improvement in my attitute even though I didn’t think I had a problem in the past. The question I have is how long does it usually take for to notice weight loss after stopping the pill? Why exactly do people lose it?

Sara

AskDocWeb Some women never lose the weight. The ones that do, eat a balanced diet and get regular exercise.

Subj: Anyone else?
Date: 4/3/2005
I was taking Tri-cyclen prior to deciding to have my second child. It took me much longer to conceive the second time, over a year. I then miscarried before finally having my daughter. She is now three. I had to discontinue breast feeding because my breasts increased from 34C to 38DD. No kidding. I workout regularly and they still remain quite large. I have already discussed breast reduction with my doctor, but she would like me to wait til we are done having children. I am a mental health professional therefore was quick to notice the fluctuations in my mood, decreased sex drive, fatigue, weight gain, appetite changes, and depression. Not great for a relationship. I just thought it was the hormonal change since having my second child, but it has been 3 years. I just stopped the pill to see if I notice a difference. Can anyone tell me after stopping the pill, how long did it take to feel normal again? We are planning on having another child, not quite yet, so another protection will need to be used, very reluctant to try any other pill though.

Jennifer

AskDocWeb If anyone else has these problems, please share.

Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 4/4/2005
I been on the pill since Feb. 26, 2005 and starting March 29 I have had severe chest, stomach, side and back pain. Help! Could I be pregnant? I had sex on Feb 11, 2005 and the condom bust.

Tasha

AskDocWeb Since you were faithfully taking your pill everyday the chances of you being pregnant are slim.

Subj: Face and body acne
Date: 4/5/2005
I have been on Trinessa (generic for Ortho Tri-Cyl) for the past year. I was taking Ortho Evra before that for 4 years. About the 3 year or so on Ortho Evra I started getting body acne and face acne. My body acne appears by the outside of my armpits, breast, stomach. The acne is large and usually it takes a long time to heal and leaves scares. I usually get about 4 to 6 on my body a week before my period. My face breaks out as well but more moderately. I switched to Ortho Tri-cyl because I heard it helps out with acne. I still am having the same problems. I have not noticed any other symptoms. I am so tired of my body acne. Can anyone help me?

Monica

AskDocWeb This sounds like it is more of a problem than the usual acne. Please see a dermatologist and tell them about every med, vitamin, herb and mineral supplement you are taking. Read more feedback
