Date: 4/22/2005
Hi, I’ve got a question, on the 1st of April 2005 I had my normal period but 15 days later I’ve having lots of bleeding, I’ve been bleeding for 3 days. I don’t know what it could be. Its never happed to me b4, in the time when my period stopped and came back again. I’ve had unprotected sex, he withdrawed b4 he came, what could it be?? It feels like a period but I shouldn’t be having 2 periods in one month. Please help me.

Vanessa

AskDocWeb Having two periods per month is fairly common. This is frequently seen in women starting menopause although it can happen at any age. Causes range from illness to antibiotics to stress. It also can happen if this is your first month on birth control. If you haven’t missed any pills you should be okay.

Subj: Losing sex drive
Date: 4/22/2005
Is there a possibility of losing your sex drive while on ortho tri-cyclen?

Megan

AskDocWeb Yes, read the feedback here and you will find several women reported losing their sex drive while on Ortho Tri-cyclen.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 4/23/2005
I am eighteen years old and I have been taking Ortho-tricyclen low for a year and half now. I’ve never experienced any side effects, until recently. I have gained almost 15 pounds in 4 months. I am very active and definitely have not been eating more. In fact, I have lost my appetite recently and been eating less in the past few months and having an average of about 1000 calories a day. Could I be having a reaction to the pill after taking it for a year and a half? or could it be severe water weight gain? I don’t know what to do.

Brittanny

AskDocWeb It could be a reaction to the pill, but there could be another problem. Discuss this with your doctor and ask about having your thyroid checked.

Subj: Yasmin as alternative to Lo
Date: 4/25/2005
I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen lo, and it made me so sick. I felt nauseous, very sleepy, bad abdominal pain. I decided not to take it any more and now I feel fine, so I know it was b/c of the pill. I think I am going to try Yasmin this time.

Christina

AskDocWeb Let us know how Yasmin works for you. We are sure that others are looking for alternatives to Ortho-Lo.

Subj: Forgot to reorder
Date: 4/25/2005
I have been taken Orthro Tri-cycle for almost a year now and have never missed any, however; last month I forgot to reorder them. I didn’t take them after my last cycle. Now it is over a month later and I have yet to get my period? Is it possible that I may be pregnant even if I stopped taking the pill a month ago?

Ashley

AskDocWeb It may take awhile for your periods to become regular again but yes, you could be pregnant a month after you discontinue the pills.

Subj: Big mistake
Date: 4/25/2005
My doctor switched me from Ortho Novum 7/7/7 to Ortho Tricyclen – what a big mistake. Right away my appetite was insatiable – I quickly gained weight. Previous to this, I have always held very steady weight. Even more troubling was the depression – I stuck with the Ortho Tricyclen for 2 months but felt so depressed I could not continue. Switching back to the Ortho Novum quickly cleared everything up. I don’t ever want to switch again!

Subj: Switched to Lo and regretting it
Date: 4/26/2005
I was on Ortho Tri-cyclen (regular) for 4 years and I seemed to adjust well to that regimen. I got my period every 24th day (Green Tuesday) like clockwork. I went off the pill in college and just resumed last year. Things were fine with the regular pill. Two months ago I switched to the Lo and am regretting it. Last month my period was 2 days late and only lasted 2 days. Now only 2 weeks later (one week earlier than expected) I am spotting again. This pill is nerve wracking.

Subj: Missing pills – pregnancy question
Date: 4/27/2005
I have been taking ortho Tri Cyclin Lo for two months and was wondering if I could get pregnant without protection. Or by missing a pill or two?.

AskDocWeb: If you miss a pill more than once a month, yes, you can become pregnant. Be careful.

Subj: Good for skin?
Date: 4/27/2005
Hi. Is Orthro Tri-cyclen really good for your skin? I been hearing good things about it so far. Every woman is different inside and out. Hopefully this pill really helps cure menstrual cycle breakouts.

AskDocWeb: Yes, Ortho Tri-cyclen is the approved by the FDA for the improvement of acne to clear up your skin.

Subj: Heart palpitations
Date: 4/27/2005
I’ve been on the Ortho for the past month and a half and I have heart palpitations. It’s scary. Is that related to the pill?!

Andia

AskDocWeb: This is something you need to have checked out by your physician. Your life may depend on the results. Heart palpitations were not listed as one of the side effects but any heart condition should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Weight gain and hair loss
Date: 4/28/2005
Hi, I am 33 years old and have just started taking Ortho Tricyclen Lo. I am very concerned about two things…scalp hair loss and the weight gain. I have been over weight for along time. I started dieting 2 years ago and have lost over 150 pounds. Now I’m worried about putting the weight back on because of using the pill. I have worked very hard to get this weight off and do not want to put it back on because of the pill. Another thing is I’ve heard alot of people have had hair loss due to this pill. I do know it is listed as one of the side effects. How common it that to happen? And is the weight gain just fluid or it is because it changes your eating habits or what?

Rina

AskDocWeb: Some weight gain will happen with any birth control pill but the weight gain is mostly water. Women who have not changed their diets at all have gained up to 15 lbs. We were unable to find a source for statistics on the percentage of women who experience hair loss from birth control.

Subj: Want to be regular
Date: 4/28/2005
I first started my periods and I was as regular as clockwork, but within 6 months it started to never come most months and then if it did for like a day or 2. Later like 8 months I have gained weight and still no periods. My OBGYN wants me to either let it flow or try ortho tri-cyclen lo. Summer is coming and I really want to be regular, but am afraid of side effects should I try the meds? (I also have slight acne on my shoulders and face, but take retinae micro for that, could the ortho tri cyclen lo mess with that too) Are the common side effects worth the results that should occur? And does it really clear up acne, or just dry out skin (my skin is usually a little oily), make you gain weight, and increase breast size? Please help me! Thank You SO MUCH!

Veronica

AskDocWeb: If your main concern is to be regular then take the birth control pills as directed. Feedback from users suggest that Ortho Tri-cyclen is good, and Ortho lo is not good for improving acne and you can have weight gain with either one. As far as breast enhancement, some have this but you are more likely to get the unpleasant breast tenderness every month.

Subj: Breakthrough bleeding and cramping
Date: 4/28/2005
I suppressed my period last month by skipping the inactive pills and going directly to a new pack of pills. I am now on the second week of pills (light blue) and am experiencing breakthrough bleeding and cramping. Can I skip the last week of active pills (dark blue) and take the inactive pills instead? Would this bring about menstruation? If so, after the week on the inactive pills, can I continue normally and begin a new pack on the Sunday following menstruation? How long should I use a backup method of birth control?

Allison

AskDocWeb: There are reasons for not skipping the inactive pills, breakthrough bleeding and cramping two of them. If you want to take the pills in any way other than as directed, talk to your doctor about it first.

Subj: Hair loss
Date: 4/29/2005
I’ve been off and on Ortho Tri-cyclen for years now, and have noticed some gradual hair loss. I now have lost a lot of density and am worried that I might lose it all! My doctor has suggested that I try another birth control thinking it could be the Ortho Tri-cyclen…has anyone else experienced hair loss while taking this?? I’m only 32yrs old and single, so I’m kinda freaking out here!

Rachel

AskDocWeb: At the age of 32 most women start to experience some hair thinning, it’s just the way things work.

Subj: Early period
Date: 4/29/2005
I have been on ortho try cyclen lo for 8 months now. Every few months (2nd time so far), I will get my period early. I had spotting during the first three months on the pill. Is this cause for alarm or just one of the side effects. Also, should I continue and finish out my pill pack taking the placebo, or start a new pack the following week?

K

AskDocWeb: No cause for alarm, finish taking the placebos.

Subj: Hair loss and weight
Date: 4/29/2005
Hello, I’m a 25 year old woman and started noticing my hair thin about 2 1/2 years ago and it’s gotten quite bad (I’ll be getting a physical very soon to get more advice). About 3 years ago I weighed almost 190 lbs (and I’m only 5’3) and I think this might have caused my hair to thin out in addition to an increase in bodily hair. I still had normal cycles, but is it possible my testosterone levels increased causing these changes in me?

I still am overweight (and I’m so worried about my hair that I’m diligently trying to drop it) and my question is it possible for my hair to grow back if I’m at a normal weight and use products like Rogaine considering my mother and father have abundant hair?

Sandra

AskDocWeb:Sounds like you have a good plan. Your health as far as eating habits should improve your condition. Have your thyroid checked if you haven’t done this already, and take good multi-vitamin daily. Read more feedback
