Subj: Mood swings and depression with LO
Date: 7/7/2005
I thought I was crazy, too. I was on ortho tricyclen (regular) for almost a year when I was 20. I then went off it for 3 years. I’m back on birth control again, and this time I decided to try ortho-tricyclen LO. I have been having mood swings, and have been depressed off and on since I started taking it. I thought it was just the pressures of a serious relationship, but I’m starting to think it is the pill. Any advice? What other pill would not cause this? Please help.
Eva
AskDocWeb: We have heard these same symptoms from other people too. Are you able to go back to ortho tri-cyclen?
Subj: Problems with generic Ortho
Date: 7/7/2005
Last year I was Ortho Tri-Cyclen and in December I was changed to a generic brand of Ortho for cost purposes. In May I spotted heavy a week before my period as well as my boobs hurting really, really bad (unusual for me) and then had a normal period. In June my period was three days late (very unusual for me I have always started on time), and this month, July, I am having the heavy spotting the week before my period and the hurting boob thing again, not to mention that they seem to be bigger. Along with my messed up periods I have been very moody, depressed, dizzy, and I cry very easily. I have gained probably close to 10 pounds or more over these three months even though I have been exercising and watching what I ate. Could these problems be related to my birth control pills or do you think it is something more than that?
Kay
AskDocWeb: It could be the generic Ortho but, you should not be having these problems after 7 months on the new birth control. Sounds like you had better have a pelvic exam to see if there are any other problems.
Subj: Getting a period every two weeks?
Date: 7/7/2005
I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for three months and since I started it, I have had a “normal” period every two weeks. Is this a side effect of the pill?
Rebecca
AskDocWeb: It sounds like it is the pill. Since you have been on them for three months, it is time to discuss this with your doctor.
Subj: Problems with tricyclen-lo
Date: 7/7/2005
I have been taking tricyclen-lo for a month and a half now. Lately, I have been feeling very depressed even suicidal at times, hopelessness, irritable, moody, and edgy. I have trouble falling asleep. It’s effecting my marriage and work. These symptoms have started to happen very frequently almost every day now and at a certain time of the day especially at night. It finally occurred to me that maybe it is due to this pill since I have never experienced any of these symptoms to this severity and so frequently. I came to this page in search of any comments on depression, edginess, moodiness. Please help!

AskDocWeb: Sounds like you need to consult with your physician on changing your birth control as soon as possible. These side effects have been reported by hundreds of women on Ortho-Lo.
Subj: Does anyone know?
Date: 7/8/2005
Hello,I have been recommended by my gyn doctor to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen. It’s been around 5 months that I am on this pill. I am taking this pill for my hirsotisum problem (Growing hair on my neck and both side of my face). I have not seen any changes yet. The pill started to regulate my period but it does not last more that 4 days with very little bleeding. I have also begun to gain wait in the past 4 months and my breast has change sizes as well. Has any one experienced this symptom (very little bleeding)? Dose any one know whether this is a good start for unwanted grown hair treatment?
Leyla
AskDocWeb: Yes, there have been the same reports from others, but as far as unwanted hair growth, nothing on that has been reported.
Subj: Sporadic periods
Date: 7/8/2005
I have been on the pill for almost 4 years. My periods have become sporadic-they used to be on schedule for years – the same start and stop time. Is this normal?
Kelly
AskDocWeb: Abnormal start times for your period may be due to antibiotics, illness or stress. If none of these apply to you then call your physician, especially if you are having more than one period a month.
Subj: Questions about starting birth control with Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo
Date: 7/8/2005
I am going to begin to take ortho try cyclen lo on Sunday, but I was wondering if you could answer questions that I have. What color pills make you get your period? How long will it take to get it? And how long will my period last for? I understand it probably varies for everybody, but just an estimate. I currently menstruate for 8 days, so I’m wondering what to expect. Thank you,
Amanda
AskDocWeb: Your period should start while you are on the placebo pills. Colors can vary but you can tell which are placebo pills because there are less of them than the other pills. Your period should last between 4 to 5 days.
Subj: Switched to lo and hate it
Date: 7/8/2005
I was using ortho tri cyclen for two years, and I loved it! Recently, my obgyn decided to switch me to ortho tri lo and I hate it! My face is breaking out and for some weird reason, I have had a couple of diagnosed yeast infections. I’ve thrown the entire pack away and am switching back to ortho tri.

Subj: Switched to Nuva ring and back to normal
Date: 7/9/2005
I changed to Ortho Tri-cyclen because of the recommendation of my new doctor who said it is good for skin. Yes it was good but not for the price I paid. I had severe mood effects and became suicidal during my period. I thought it was due to change of environment, stress from a new job and moving in with my boyfriend but these things had never affected me before. I would go on arguing and fighting with my boy friends till morning, crying, throwing things around and… After 2 years a friend visiting me and saw me using the pill and told me how this pill has affected her mood and drove her crazy and if it wasn’t because of another friend she would never notice it. I stopped using it and switched to Nuva Rings and after about 4 or 5 months I was back to normal. Please, please be careful using this pill.
Ladan
AskDocWeb: The Nuva ring has been praised by many women.
Subj: Just switched to Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo
Date: 7/9/2005
I have just switched from taking ortho cyclen to ortho tri-cyclen lo (I had ovarian problems with ortho tri-cyclen), because I liked the idea of a pill which adds a lower amount of hormones to my system. At first, I did not find any research to show that a lower hormone level would create a greater risk of pregnancy, but I have recently met a few people who have become pregnant while on “lo” pills. I’m sure this could be due to taking the pills incorrectly, and other human errors, but I was wondering what the specific risk of pregnancy is between ortho tri-cyclen lo, vs. ortho cyclen? Thanks,
Ann
AskDocWeb: The risk does seem to be higher but we haven’t seen any research to confirm that. We will keep looking. Another reader wrote that she too became pregnant while on Ortho-lo. Never forgot a pill and always take it at the same time.

Does Ortho Tri-Cyclen has in it antihistamines and prednisone. If it dose I have to stop taking the pill for a few days to be tested for allergies?
Cammy
AskDocWeb: No, you don’t have to discontinue Ortho to do allergy testing.
Subj: Glad to find this
Date: 7/11/2005
I’m so glad to have found this site. I was going on vacation and wanted to regulate my period so I wouldn’t be on it at the beach. Instead, I ended up bloated (put on 10 lbs in 6 weeks…weights never been a problem) and have NO sex drive AT ALL, plus, I have pimples all over around my mouth. I would have rather been on my period on vacation than in a bathing suit looking bloated and having a moonface along with pimples!!!

Subj: Got pregnant on ortho tricyclen?
Date: 7/11/2005
My friend and 6 other people that I know were on ortho tricyclen and got pregnant, when my friend went to the doctor she wasn’t the only one in the room that was also on ortho tricyclen that had gotten pregnant. I’m on it right now and of course having sex with my fiance, should I be worried about getting pregnant on this pill?
Ciarah
AskDocWeb: We have heard other women say they have become pregnant with Ortho-tri Lo but not ortho tricyclen.
Subj: Freaked out about side effects of lo
Date: 7/11/2005
I just got the ortho-tri cyclen lo today but haven’t taken it yet, and I am so freaked out about the serious side effects it has. Heart attack, blood clots, etc. has anyone had these before? I am really freaked out.
Cindy
AskDocWeb: Nothing as serious as blood clots, but if you keep reading here there are plenty of women who share your concerns. Most of what we hear has to do with emotional problems like mood swings, loss of temper and depression. Read more feedback
