Subj: Back on Ortho tri-cyclen lo
Date: 7/19/2005
Hi, I had been taking Ortho tri-cyclen lo for about 2 years and went off of it for about two months. When I got back on it again this month I got my period like normal but it started again after I had been off a week. Is this normal? It’s really starting to cause problems in my sex life, being on and then off. I have never been disappointed with this brand but its really starting to worry me. I have never encountered this problem and would appreciate some info on what’s going on. Thanks.
Elaine
AskDocWeb: Because you were off of it for two month and now back on it, the changes in your hormone levels are causing you problems. It may be another two months before your periods become normal.
Subj: Acne came back
Date: 7/19/2005
I’ve been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for about 8 years. I stopped taking Ortho about 3 months ago and now my skin is breaking out. I have acne on my chest, back, and face and it’s getting worse. The reason I went on Ortho was not to treat acne? Is this a normal side effect to getting off of Ortho? Is this a permanent thing and what’s the best method of treating the acne?
Courtney
AskDocWeb: If your acne is pretty bad you should seek advice from a dermatologist.
Subj: Acne break out on Depo
Date: 7/20/2005
I was on ortho tri cyclen for years before having children, mainly for acne. After the birth of my daughter, my Dr. put me on Depo. I began to break out terribly, and asked him to switch me back to ortho. He put me on the lo version, which I’ve been on for about 1 1/2 months. I’m reading that ortho is the only bcp approved for acne, and lo doesn’t have the same effect. Why is this? Does the 10 mcg of estrogen difference between the two make that much of a difference and how does that work?
Leeann
AskDocWeb: Ortho-lo is intended to provide birth control with a lower amount of hormone in the pill. And yes, it does make that much of a difference.
Subj: Brownish discharge
Date: 7/20/2005
I’ve been in ortho tri-cyclen lo for 8 months and I think is great. I felt no side effects at all until this month after I got my period (2 weeks ago). I’ve been having a brownish discharge, this has never happened before, anyway I’ve heard is normal, but I thought it was only when you started taking them for the first time. I just want to know if it’ll go away and if every month after getting my period will be the same.
Rachel
AskDocWeb: In most cases this is okay and it happens from time to time. It’s likely just material from your uterus sloughing off. There is no way to know how long it will last but your periods should return to normal.
Subj: Terrible moodiness
Date: 7/20/2005
I’ve been on ortho tri-cyclen lo for a little over a year because my periods will last to long. However, since I’ve been on it I get yeast infections regularly. I eat anything sweet and I start to feel itchy, do you recommend that I stop taking the pill? I get these way too often. Also, I suffer from terrible moodiness, feel mad for no reason and tired all the time, help!
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Yes, it sounds like you could benefit from changing birth control. We suggest you discuss this with your physician.
Subj: Just started ortho tricyclen low
Date: 7/21/2005
I have been taking ortho tricyclen low now for about 2 1/2 weeks and I have been spotting and I was wondering if that was normal. And also I would like to know the rest of the side effects; and if that is the best birth control pill out there?
Meghaan
AskDocWeb: Spotting is common within the first 3 months until your period becomes regular. Although it appears that drug company reps are encouraging doctors to promote this drug, we are hearing a lot of negative feedback about emotional problems such as depression, anger, and moodiness. Like most birth control pills, it is not to be used while nursing.
Subj: High moodiness
Date: 7/24/2005
I’ve been on Cyclen for 5 months now. Is it possible to have too much estrogen in your body. I’m experiencing high moodiness and my boyfriend can barely stand it. Is this a result of the pill?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is probably a result of the pill and many others have reported the same symptoms.
Subj: Extreme moodiness
Date: 7/24/2005
My boyfriend can’t handle how moody I’ve been on ortho try cyclen, can it cause you to be extremely moody?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: Yes, it can cause moodiness, anger, and depression.
Subj: I’m switching
Date: 7/25/2005
I’ve used both Ortho Tri-cyclen, and Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo. The regular version made me cry buckets. Tried Estrostep and I got a little bulky. I liked Yasmin the best, rarely any side effects. Ortho-Tricyclen Lo has been the worst. Gained weight, and have had ridiculous spotting – almost to the point where it’s a full period every two weeks. Can’t stand it, I’m switching.

Subj: Never had acne problems until starting Ortho Tricyclen Lo
Date: 7/26/2005
I’ve taken Ortho Tricyclen Lo for about 2 months. I did notice that I was getting acne on my face (starting with my cheeks) around the third week of taking this pill. From reading online and never ever having acne problems ever in my life, I knew almost immediately that the cause of the acne was probably the Ortho Tricyclen Lo. In the past, I would get maybe a pimple or two once in awhile, and I’d use Oxy wash facial cleanser and the pimple would disappear overnight. When I suddenly started to see a lot of acne at once caused by the pill, I went back to washing my face with Oxy wash and continued to do so daily. My face had gotten so oily that the acne didn’t seem to recede overnight. However, I did begin to see some results after sometime of continuous use. Eventually my acne almost completely disappeared. I also noticed that if I skip using the Oxy wash cleanser for one or two days, the acne starts back.
After talking to a pro active representative at the mall and researching online I think I have a general idea of what happens. The hormones being a little wacky makes the face oilier contributing to clogging of the pores. When I use oxy wash it dries up the oiliness in my face. I would recommend that anyone who never really had severe acne problems or anything of that nature in the past, but started seeing acne after using ortho tricyclen lo try this. I’m sure any facial cleanser that has generally worked for you would do the trick. I’ve always used oxy wash, so I stick by it. Good luck,
Jan
Subj: Moody, depressed, fatigued, and eating a lot on Orto-tri cyclen low
Date: 7/26/2005
I am 2 months into the Orto-tri cyclen low. I am very moody, depressed, fatigued, and eating a lot. The side effects didn’t show up until the second month. I am currently on the placebo section of the second pack. Are you supposed to have the period during the entire placebo dosage, or part? I am going into my third dose of the placebo and haven’t begun my period.
J
AskDocWeb: No, some women do not have their period during the entire placebo week.
Subj: Getting fat on the pill
Date: 7/26/2005
I have been on the Ortho Evera birth control patches for almost a year now. As time had passed I noticed that I had tender skin around my vagina, and constant yeast infection like symptoms. My Dr told me it was because of hormones and has now given me the Ortho Tri-Cyclen lo pills to start. I must say that the side effects sound really freaky, and I would rather not gain weight. Is the weight gain the same with regular tri cyclen and the Lo dose? Is there anyone out there that didn’t get fat off of this pill?
Crystal
Subj: Is it lo or pregnancy?
Date: 7/27/2005
I’ve been feeling really nauseated at night and sometimes it goes on from night to morning for the past week. I’m on ortho tri cyclen lo and I took a pregnancy test which came out negative. I still feel nauseated at night…could I be pregnant even though it’s negative?
Anne
AskDocWeb: These are likely just the side effects of the Ortho-Lo.
Subj: Painful nipples
Date: 7/27/2005
I have been taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for 4 days now and my breast and especially nipples hurt very badly. Is this normal? And is it true that it can cause your breast to grow? That would be great! To also make a note-no one EVER get on depo-provera shot. It should be banned! Thanks!
Heather
AskDocWeb: Breast tenderness has been reported by others on Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo. It seems to accompany an increase in breast size. Report the breast pain to your physician.
Subj: Regular or generic version
Date: 7/27/2005
My doctor prescribed me Ortho tri-cycle, not the low dose, to regulate my severe mood swings. I just realized that my insurance requires me to get TriNessa, the generic brand. It’s about day 10 and I’m breaking out on my forehead and cheek. Is this because I have the generic brand? I notice that some women experience side effects, others feel no change when starting BC. Is the generic version the reason why we have the side effects? If I pay for the Ortho Tri-cyclen, will the acne go away?
Jess
AskDocWeb: Yes, if you use the regular Ortho Tri-cyclen your acne will most likely go away. It seems that the generic brand is enough different that you lose the benefits to your skin that the regular version provided. Read more feedback
