Subj: Questions
Date: 1/20/2006
Hello, I have some questions. I missed three of my ortho-lo pills, then started taking them again. I had break thru bleeding for 1 week starting 12/27-1/3, now I feel nauseated constipated and tired all the time, sensitive tender nipples, plus I get headaches like every morning and cramping going on now for three weeks. I am trying to get pregnant and been having sex at least every other day but I took a test this morning and it said it was negative. My normal period was supposed to come this week 1/16/06 but didn’t if the break thru bleeding was my period than I should have another period next week 1/23/06. What should I do if my period does not come? I want to get pregnant and I do not know if what I am experiencing is normal and if I will get my period at all of when I will be ovulating. Please help.

Anna

AskDocWeb: This sounds a little confusing because those who want to get pregnant should not be taking birth control pills. By missing three birth control pills, you have thrown off your cycle. Be patient and your mensis should begin, if it doesn’t do another pregnancy test. By missing those pills you could be pregnant.

Subj: Does it matter?
Date: 1/23/2006
I have been on Ortho Tryclen Lo for 6 years…Me and my boyfriend had sex 3 days after my period which was a Saturday…But I didn’t start my white pills till Sunday…does it matter?

Jenn

AskDocWeb: No, it doesn’t matter at all. You can have intercourse on any day of the pill pack. Hopefully no one told you that you can only have sex while on the white pills!

Subj: Birth control depression
Date: 1/24/2006
I have been taking ortho Tri-cyclen for two months now. Although my face has cleared up, and my menstrual pain has weakened, I have been experiencing depression. I cry all the time and constantly am angry, this is not my usual character. I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?

Courtney

AskDocWeb: Yes, see your physician about this matter. It is possible that he will change your birth control pill to another brand.

Subj: Clearing up acne
Date: 1/25/2006
I started taking ortho tricyclen almost 3 months ago. I was looking forward to it clearing up my acne but so far it hasn’t been working. Does it take a certain amount of time to take effect or could I be doing something wrong?

Amanda

AskDocWeb: If you’re doing your basic good facial cleansing and eating proper foods, you are doing nothing wrong. You should give it a good 6 months.

Subj: Missing pill
Date: 1/26/2006
I dropped my pill down the sink, that was 2 hours ago, should I miss a day or just take Fridays pill?

AskDocWeb: We am going to assume here that it was a birth control pill. Either way you look at it you are missing a pill either now or later. Sounds like you will have to adjust your whole schedule by one day. And in the future don’t take pills next to a sink.

Subj: I’m scared!
Date: 1/28/2006
I am currently on ortho trycyclin lo and I don’t know if I like it or not. I’ve been on it for about 3-4 months and it did regulate my periods for the most part but I have terrible headaches and side cramps. I often worry I am pregnant.. I don’t know if I should switch or what. I’m scared!

Kelli

AskDocWeb: Any time you are scared about taking something you should have an open discussion with your physician.

Subj: TriCyclen lo side effects
Date: 2/1/2006
I have been on TriCyclen lo for about 4 months now and have noticed symptoms similar to the other readers…I have gone from 145lbs to 165 in four months!!! Moody, nervous/anxious, depressed are in there too, going back to my doctor to suggest something different. Any suggestions as to brands that do not cause such problems?? Thanks

Patty

AskDocWeb: Ask your doctor about the Nuva Ring. It is relatively new but it would be nice to have some feedback on it from users.

Subj: Breakthrough bleeding
Date: 2/2/2006
I was on the patch (ortho evra) for maybe 4 or five months and began to have some of the abnormal and dangerous side effects like tingling. My doctor then switched me to Ortho T Cylen Lo this past month. I started the 3rd week (blue pills) and have been experiencing light bleeding. Is this normal? Should I worry?

CKC

AskDocWeb: No worry, this is okay given you are starting a new drug for birth control. Your period may not be regular for three months, so be patient. If breakthrough bleeding continues after that tell your physician about it.

Subj: Strange flow
Date: 2/2/2006
I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo over a year and it has been wonderful, however in the last couple of periods, I have noticed a change in consistency. To explain more, it is like clear mucus tinged with blood. Now there is regular blood, mixed with this mucus-y blood stuff. I do not think that they are clots, but I am not sure. I have heard a story about a lady who took this pill and got pregant and never missed a period…can this be true? And is what I am experiencing something to be concerned about?

Casey

AskDocWeb: Since it has been a couple of months and you state now there is regular blood, it doesn’t sound like you are pregnant. If you were pregnant, in the second month there would have been no blood. It sounds like you are passing clots instead of a regular flow. You should tell your physician about this. When your period is through have a PAP smear done to make sure there is nothing wrong.

Subj: Just started Ortho-lo
Date: 2/4/2006
I just started taking ortho-lo recently. I took it for 4 months and then stopped for a month. At the end of the month my period never came. I’m about 15 days late and I have never been late. I never had problem with ortho-lo before and planned on going back on it but my period hasn’t come. Is this normal?

Rachel

AskDocWeb: Changes is your period are normal when you stop or start birth control. Now that you have stopped it will take three months for your periods to become normal again.

Subj: TriNessa side effects
Date: 2/4/2006
I have been on Ortho Tricyclen for about 8 years, with no problems other than the first month or two when I initially started them long ago (the usual symptoms most women have when fist put on BCPs the first time- nausea and a little bloating, but that all subsided by the second month and no issues for the next eight years). Well almost 3 months ago, my insurance switched coverage and to my surprise what I picked up at the pharmacy was TriNessa. I am a RN so I looked up the drug info and amount of hormones in TriNessa, and its manufacturer claims it contains the same milligrams of estrogen, progesterone, etc, as OrthoTriCyclen, so I decided to give it a try and save $20/month.

The first month I really didn’t have any problems, but the second month was a whole other issue. I started bleeding one week into my cycle (not just breakthru spotting- I mean HEAVY, and more cramps than I ever experienced since put on BCPs 8 years ago). The bleeding lasted until I was supposed to start my period according to the pack, and then finally subsided after 3 weeks total. I figured my MD would tell me to give it 3 months for my body to get used to anyway, so I am currently on my third pack. Three months will be my max on TriNessa if I have any issues this pack.

I don’t understand why so many women like me are having all these issues with TriNessa when the manufacturer is saying they are chemically the same? If they are the same chemical makeup, there shouldn’t be hundreds of women with major mood swings, weight gain, pregnancies, acne, and nausea when we all had no problems with OrthoTriCyclen. As much as I’d like to save $250/year using the generic, it wouldn’t be worth getting pregnant, unintentionally gaining weight, getting acne again after I finally have it under control, and driving my fiance crazy with my irritability and moodiness (I was NOT like that on Ortho TriCyclen!). The thought of pregnancy right now scares me enough to pay $27/month for good ol’ Ortho TriCyclen. When it ain’t broke, DONT TRY TO FIX IT!

Subj: Nuvaring
Date: 2/6/2006
I was on the ring for about 6 months and then stopped. I got pregnant right afterward but miscarried, I was put on ortho and it makes me a little crazy so I went back to the ring. I forgot to get my rx filled and was worried the ring had cause me to miscarry last time. I after 8 weeks of not having it in found myself pregnant for about a week, and miscarried again. It is possibly the ring?

Andrea

AskDocWeb: We haven’t seen any studies on miscarriage and the Nuvaring.

Subj: Pain and mood swings
Date: 2/6/2006
I’ve been on ortho-lo for one week now and my lower back both my thighs and my calfs hurt all day I’ve been having moods swings acting strange (aggitated)also I’ve been getting head aches with slight dizziness and alot of gas what should I do?

lakiesha

AskDocWeb: We suggest you talk to your doctor about a change your birth control to another. There is no need for you to be as uncomfortable as you are right now. Or you can wait the whole pack and see if the symptoms do go away.

Subj: Just started ortho lo
Date: 2/6/2006
I started taking ortho lo 3 weeks ago (I started the placebos yesterday). Shouldn’t I have started my period already? If not when should I expect it & will it be the same length as my periods were before I was on the pill?

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: The first three months will be different for you until your period begins to be normal again. Your body has to adjust to the new pills.

Subj: Ortho tri-cyclen lo hair problems
Date: 2/7/2006
I have been taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for 10 months now and I have notice that my hair has gotten thin and breaking badly. I use to be on ortho tri-cylen. It this because of this particular pill.

Charlotte

AskDocWeb: Probably, others have been reporting the same problem.

Subj: Going off the pill
Date: 2/7/2006
I’ve had a great experience for over 7 years on Orth regular. I did at one point switch to generic and had a cycle every other week for 6 months until I could get back to the name brand. My question is I’m now trying to get pregnant and have been off the pill since 1st of Dec. I’ve had 4 menstrual cycles in 2 1/2 months, horrible depression, anger, irrational thinking and cysts on my ovaries. How many months will this last until my body is regulated? Is there anything I can do in the mean time to feel balanced?

Ally

AskDocWeb: Have a talk with your doctor about this. Since you are trying to get pregnant you want to be sure that you don’t take anything that will hurt the fetus when you do become pregnant. Read more feedback
