Subj: Possibility of getting pregnant
Date: 2/20/2006
Have been taking ortho tri cyclen for 12 years and I wasn’t able to make my appt. To see the dr. so I don’t have my pills this time! Do you think I could get pregnant if I were to not take any pills for 1 month?? Please help! Thank you,

Alisaa

AskDocWeb: Yes, you could get pregnant.

Subj: When to start the pill
Date: 2/21/2006
Can I start taking Ortho Tricyclen at any time during my cycle? If so, after how many days of taking the pills does it become effective? Thanks!

Jessica

AskDocWeb: If you follow directions, the first tablet should be taken on the first Sunday after menstruation begins. If your period begins on a Sunday, the first tablet should be taken that day. Another method of contraception should be used with the pills during the first 7 consecutive days.

Subj: Changing to ortho regular
Date: 2/21/2006
I was taking ortho lo for about 8-9 months or so and my skin cleared up some. After doing some research…I decided to go to my Dr and see if ortho regular will clear me up more. Apparently there is more success with the regular. I also am inclined to think it will help me more cause I have PCOS and the hormonal thing is a big part of my acne. So I started my first pack a week ago. Is there a chance I am going to have crazy side effects…like more acne…just going to a higher dosage?

Amy

AskDocWeb: It is unlikely that you would have more acne but there will be some adjustment.

Subj: Risk of pregnancy?
Date: 2/21/2006
My girlfriend has been on ortho tri-cyclen for 2 years. She takes her pills properly at the same time every day but is scared to let me ejaculate inside of her. Is there a risk of pregnancy at any point of the month?

Joe

AskDocWeb: No there isn’t any risk as long as she continues to be on the pill and she should know this. Sounds like there may be another reason.

Subj: Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo side effects
Date: 2/21/2006
I was on Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo for 3 months after not being on any birth control pill for many years. I know it was responsible for the side effects I experienced, which began immediately, and ceased immediately after I switched to Alesse. These effects were quite severe: 1. I went from having maybe 4 migraines a year to having a migraine headache almost every other day. 2. Terrible spells of lethargy which affected my work. I was tired ALL the time. 3. Depression. So bad I thought I was going crazy. I had no idea this pill could cause this – I am so greatful my Gyno had me then switch to Alesse (or Lutera, the generic). All these problems went away, and I have had no other side effects at all. If you start to have any of these issues, especially the mood swings, please have your doctor switch your pill, as they are all different, and there should be one that works for you. Please don’t put yourself through the horrible trauma that I experienced.

Subj: Adverse reaction
Date: 2/22/2006
Have you heard of anyone having a drug reaction to Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo. After about 2 weeks on the pill I broke out in rashes that itch all over my torso. They disappear in about a day or two, but pop up somewhere else. This is my 2nd month on Ortho Tri-Cyclen. My doctor put me on them to regulate my cycle as I have fibroids. My breast have gotten bigger. Will they get smaller if I go off the pills? Thanks

Arlene

AskDocWeb: Yes, your breasts will get smaller once you discontinue taking the pills. The rash may be an allergic reaction to these pills, and may get worse as time goes on. Please tell your physician about this.

Subj: How long to take effect?
Date: 2/22/2006
How long after I start my first pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo does it take to be effective enough to have sex without a condom?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: Depending on the source, some say 7 days to 2 weeks, others say to wait until your period comes. All sources agree that after you have your first period on the pills that you’re safe.

Subj: Ortho Cylin
Date: 2/22/2006
Hello, I have been taking Ortho Cylin for a year or 2 now and haven’t had any problems other then weight gain(is that normal?). However, this month I had my period twice. Once earlier last week(kept taking my pills like normal, and it went away) then it picked back up this week when I went on my green. What can this be? I’m hesitant to call it breakthrough bleeding only because I’ve been on it for so long. This weekend was my wedding and I had a house guest over for that week, could it simply have been stress?

Kassandra

AskDocWeb: Weight gain is absolutely normal. And yes, you could have a change in your mensis cycle due to stress or illness.

Subj: So Glad
Date: 2/23/2006
I am so glad that I have found this site -thank you! I am contacting my doctor as soon as I finish typing this. I have been on Ortho Tricyclen Lo for almost three months. My skin has broken out much more than usual, I feel bloated, I am depressed, and so amazingly irritable. I kept thinking that it must be due to something else because my friend has used Ortho Tricyclen Lo for a while and loves it. I guess people respond very differently. I was worried I was going crazy!

Subj: Back up birth control
Date: 2/25/2006
I am about to start orthotricyclen low on a Sunday start. Their website says that one should use a back up method such as condoms etc, for the first week yet my doctor said to wait 2 weeks. What would you suggest?

Amanda

AskDocWeb: We want to be on the safe side so we agree that two weeks is a good idea.

Subj: Funny feeling in chest
Date: 2/25/2006
I started on Ortho Trycyclen Lo five days ago. Thankfully I didn’t experience any of the nausea, however my nipples have been rather sore these past few days and also I have this funny feeling in my chest, as if my hearth was beating at a faster rate then it’d be normal when for example I am just sitting at my desk or walking at a normal pace (let alone going up a flight of stairs). I have not experienced this problem before, what’s more I am usually on the low blood pressure/heart rate side of the spectrum. Could this be a side effect of Ortho Trycyclen Lo and if so, will it go away once my body gets used to the pill? Thanks,

Julia

AskDocWeb: It may go away, but to be safe tell your doctor. You may need to change birth control pills.

Subj: Birth control for weight loss?
Date: 2/27/2006
Hello, I took Ortho-Tri Lo for about 9 months and did not notice any major problems. Then the health department I got pills from changed and only carried regular Ortho Tricyclen and I hated it so I stopped. My husband thought about starting to try and have a baby and then decided to wait so I am getting back on a pill. I am considering Yasmin. But read some horror stories about it on a forum. That is caused some to be severely emotional. I had thought Yasmin was also supposed to help you lose weight. Is this true? Is a there a pill that can aid in weight loss?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: No, there isn’t a birth control pill that will help with weight loss (too bad).

Subj: Became pregnant on pill
Date: 2/27/2006
I know that the pill is supposed to be 98-99% effective but I had been using ortho tri-cyclen for 12 years and I became pregnant, perhaps did my body become immune to the pill or am I just that 1% that are unlucky?

Dawn

AskDocWeb: Sometimes doctors will change birth control pills every few years (or 5) so that you avoid building up a tolerance, but some don’t.

Subj: Getting pregnant

I was taking ortho tri-cyclen for three years and I stopped on Valentines Day today is 2/27/06 and can I get pregnant in between me stopping the pill and today? I spotted for 5 days …4 days after stopping

Amanda

AskDocWeb: Yes, you can become pregnant anytime after stopping the pill.

Subj: Ortho-lo side effects
Date: 2/27/2006
I started taking Ortho-Tricyclne lo 2 months ago, because my Doctor felt that Yasmin was potentially the cause of my Stomach and thyroid problem – these problems started within 4 months of switching from Ortho Nova to Yasmin 3 years ago. Since taking the Ortho-lo, my acid reflux has appeared to go away, but I have been having a problem with constipation. Am thinking that I will discontinue taking my Nexium and see if things improve. I am also 44 years old. Should I really consider getting off the pill all together.

Cathy

AskDocWeb: Nexium may cause constipation, so the answer is yes, but consider your acid reflux problem too. We suggest you talk to your doctor about when you can safely discontinue birth control.

Subj: Side effects with new pill
Date: 2/27/2006
I am 21 and have been taking OTC-lo for about a year. I now have clear skin, although I might just be growing out of acne phases. Negative side-effects, however, including hot flashes, dizziness, and light headedness started occurring after I was under a great deal of stress- a year after starting OTC. The stress has been gone for a month, but I still get hot flashes and I’m often dizzy and light headed. I’ve been to the doctor to talk about this, and she switched me to a new pill, which I will start in two weeks. I’ve also been experiencing mood swings, but only after a year of taking this prescription. Is it normal to have these symptoms while on birth control?

Rachel

AskDocWeb: Because there is such a wide range of tolerances, what may be normal for one person may be unacceptable for another. You can have a change of symptoms at anytime after starting a new birth control pill, even years later. Read more feedback
