Subj: Happier
Date: 2/28/2006
I was on Ortho Tri and then Ortho Tri low. If you have a family history of brown spots (Melasma) stay away. I was on another pill for six years with no problems and developed Melasma after switching. After reading Melasma messageboards, this seems to be a problem. I started Demulen two days ago and already feel happier and less paranoid.

Subj: Going back on OTC
Date: 2/28/2006
I was originally put on ortho tri cyclen when I was 13 years old to stop my severe cramps and uncontrollable acne…within the first pill pack, I was happier than could be and never had one side effect over the course of almost 2 years. I am now 17 and had been off BC for 2 years, with no problems except for those cramps and the acne, so I decided to go back on OTC

Subj: Missed two days
Date: 2/28/2006
I’ve been taking Ortho tri cyclen lo for 1 1/2 years and I just recently missed two days of the pill, but I took the three on the third day. I was wondering if the pill is still working, or do I have to switch to a different one?

Megan

AskDocWeb: In order to make sure you do not become pregnant, you will have to use a back-up method of birth control until your period starts. Missing pills two days in a row may also cause breakthrough bleeding for the next month.

Subj: Bloating and excessive moistness
Date: 2/28/2006
I have been on the pill for 2 weeks I am in great shape but I am so bloated, will this go away after a few months? I also feel very moist like uncontrollable moist is this normal?

Antonetta

AskDocWeb: Yes the bloating is likely to go away, but the excessive moistness may be a concern, better have an exam by your physician.

Subj: Spotting
Date: 3/1/2006
I was taking Orthro tri cyclen for 3 1/2 years with no cycle. I stopped taking them cold turkey in November. When I stopped I had one very, very heavy cycle. They are running about 32 days apart now with occasional spotting. My question is that in addition to the occasional spotting, if I have sex in the days leading up to or days after my cycle I will bleed. Is this an effect of coming off the pill and not having a cycle for 3 1/2 years?

TT

AskDocWeb: You would have to be examined by a gynecologist to find out. Sex should not cause you to have breakthrough bleeding or breakthrough bleeding at all given the length of time you have been off these pills. You may need a pap smear to make sure everything is okay.

Subj: Concerned about being pregnant
Date: 3/1/2006
I have just recently started Ortho Tri-Cyclen, like a month ago. I am now on my green pills and it is Wednesday. I know that it takes a while for your period to regulate, but mine was never abnormal. Not once in my life has it been. And now I still haven’t started. Is it possible that you can get pregnant within the first month of taking the pill? Should I be concerned about being pregnant?

Kori

AskDocWeb: To be safe some say that you should use a backup birth control method until after your first period of that month. Others say it takes two weeks to be safe. It does take 3 months for your body to regulate itself after beginning a birth control pill, so your periods may be irregular for awhile.

Subj: Cause for alarm?
Date: 3/1/2006
I was on tri-nessa a generic of ortho tri cyclen. I changed to the brand name last month. I have not started my period and I have 3 more inactive pills. Is there any cause to be alarmed? I have not been sick or overly stressed, just really busy. My last period was light. I have been feeling some cramping and my breast are tender, but not the same as my usual times.

Erin

AskDocWeb: Not as long as there wasn’t a break between taking the new ones and the old ones, you should be okay. Your body is just becoming used to the new pills. Since you do have tender breasts and your last mensis was very light, do a home pregnancy test to be positive. Some women have reported breast tenderness with certain birth control pills.

Subj: Might be pregnant
Date: 3/1/2006
I’m 17 years old going on 18 in just a month here and I’m scared I might be pregnant. I was on the pill for only 5 days before I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend. He came inside me and I’m so scared. I take my last pill with hormones and then tomorrow I start the sugar pills. Is there a huge risk that I am pregnant. I have some of the symptoms.

Hayley

AskDocWeb: Yes, there is a high risk that you could be pregnant. Hopefully the doctor explained to you how long you must be on the pill before having unprotected sex.

Subj: Missed a pill
Date: 3/2/2006
I have been on ortho try cyclen lo for 7 months. I’ve missed pills here and there. But I missed a pill recently and didn’t realize it for two days. Then I took it when I remembered and continued with the pack. But like, 2 days after I took the missing pill, I had my period. At first I thought it was spot bleeding but it wasn’t. I had my period for 4 days. It stopped a day, then I started on the last week of pills and had my period again, which is when I usually have it. Is there a reason that I had my period twice and not just spot bleeding?

Trish

AskDocWeb: Yes, this can happen because you missed taking pills. It will regulate itself again.

Subj: Do not take Depo!
Date: 3/2/2006
I am on Depo, have been on it for about a year and am switching on Monday to Ortho Lo even though my shot has not worn out yet. Depo is VERY convenient, but for me it has produced about every side effect possible–vaginal dryness, decreased sex drive, breakthrough bleeding, blurred vision, DAILY headaches, severe moodiness, depression, anxiety, insecurity, and sore neck and back muscles. I feel bad for my boyfriend because we started going out and then like 2 weeks later I went on Depo…and I have been such a basket case since then! I joke that I know he’s The One because he puts up with all my mood swings! I am so scared though that everything is going to affect me this way…but I am hopeful that since Ortho Lo has such a low hormone dosage that it will not be nearly as bad. I know that everyone is different and reacts differently to everything. That said, I MUST say to all women considering Depo–DO NOT TAKE IT. It is NOT worth the risk of getting these symptoms or anything even close to them. The convenience is not worth it…I would rather have to remember to take a pill every day, and know I can switch if it doesn’t work well with my body. With Depo you have to wait

Aimee

AskDocWeb: Very true! Thank you for your story.

Subj: Going back to ortho-tri cyclen
Date: 3/3/2006
I was on ortho-tri cyclen for a few years and went off of it a couple years ago just to give my body a break. I never had any problems with it. The only thing that happened when I went off of it was that I lost like 5 pounds. I have recently been put on Yasmin and it has been making me very nauseous and has also been disturbing my sleep. I think I will go back to ortho-tri cyclen.

Colleen

Subj: Break through bleeding
Date: 3/3/2006
I am currently on Trinessa the substitute for ortho-Tri-Cyclen. Everything is fine I’ve been on it for almost a year and never missed a day, but recently I have become sexually active. At first there was no problem but now I am experiencing I guess break through bleeding, its not quite as heavy as a period though. I was wondering if I should switch and if this could cause me to get pregnant, because maybe the pill is no longer working properly.

Stacy

AskDocWeb: Break through bleeding is abnormal and it shouldn’t happen just because you are sexually active. To be on the safe side, get a check up and discuss this with your doctor.

Subj: Ortho-Trycylen lo
Date: 3/4/2006
I took ortho Tri-cyclen for 2 years and when I stopped for 3 years I found out that the mood swings had stopped I felt better but I started them again because my acne was getting bad and the ortho helped me alot to keep my skin clear. I have been taking the ortho for six days now and last night I had so much anxiety and felt like I could not breath I was so scared so I called my gyno and he switched me to ortho lo. I’m scared to take this pill, will it happen again or will the ortho-Trycylen lo be better? Or should I stop completely.

Susan

AskDocWeb: Ortho Lo should provide birth control with a lower amount of hormones. The idea is, the smaller the amount of the hormone equals fewer side effects and that should be better for you.

Subj: Painful itch and burning
Date: 3/4/2006
For three months now just before my period, I have painful itch and burning in and on the outside of the vagina. There is not a thick discharge, but it is a flaky almost white skin looking shedding that occurs. When my period comes, the symptoms go away until just before the next period. My husband and I are both monogamous, what could this be?

Sheri

AskDocWeb: Painful itching, burning and discharge should be checked out by your GYN. Do not ignore these symptoms, not that they’re serious or anything, but you shouldn’t have to go through this every month.

Subj: No guarantee?
Date: 3/5/2006
I was just prescribed ortho try-cyclen lo. I’m in my first relationship, taking my first birth control pills. Honestly, I understand why it’s important to have a place to ask questions about birth control … but it’s not like any “feedback” about this pill will be beneficial. After all, this isn’t a book review we’re talking about here. Our bodies are so individual that one person may react horribly to this pill, while another will love it. Personally, I have not noticed any problems as of yet … but then, I’m still early on into my first pack. At any rate … I just don’t think reading about how it affects another woman’s body is all that helpful. There is no guarantee that this is how it will affect us.

Kate

AskDocWeb: Many problems have solutions that are common to most people and we provide a forum to share those solutions. The same is true of questions and answers. Sometimes it helps to know that you are not alone in dealing with a problem. Several women have told us that they thought they were going crazy until they found out that other women were going through the same experience.
