Subj: Ortho Tri-cyclen lo
Date: 3/6/2006
I have been on orthotricyclene low for 3 months now. I have been extremely moody, tired, I have gained 10 pounds and have no sex drive. Lately I have been feeling a lot of anxiety and am feeling real depressed. I think it is time to stop the pill.

Subj: First period with new pills?
Date: 3/6/2006
I just started taking Ortho Tri Lo…I’m almost done with my first pack but I was wondering when am I supposed to have my period? Kinda worried,

AskDocWeb: No need to be concerned, it takes up to three months for your period to regulate itself. And shame on your doctor for not letting you know that.

Subj: Dragon-Lady
Date: 3/6/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for 3 years now and I am starting to notice severe mood swings and PMS. It definitely made my periods shorter and less heavy, however, I have just recently turned into Dragon-Lady this last year of taking it. Should I switch??

AskDocWeb: Yes, it sounds like you should discuss these dragon-lady affects with your physician.

Subj: Messed up
Date: 3/6/2006
I am taking trinessa. I accidentally took the sugar pills first in my pack. I realized it Saturday night so I took the Saturday active pill. Then, I realized that I didn’t really know what to do so I called my doc. I had unprotected sex while taking the sugar pills. Could I be pregnant? When should my period start?

AskDocWeb: Yes, you could be pregnant. And having taken the pills wrong your period will be off for awhile.

Subj: Depo screwed me up
Date: 3/7/2006
I am on ortho lo I love it I have never had any problems with it. I would recommend it to anyone. I started out on depo and it screwed me up pretty good. I became very mean and emotional. Nobody wanted to come around me, I finally had a break down and had to get help. My doctor discovered it was because of the shot so I stopped taking it.

Subj: Not worth it
Date: 3/7/2006
I was on ortho tri cyclen lo for about a year and a half and then discontinued use because of symptoms. My acne got worse and my boyfriend and I got back together so I started taking it again 5 months ago. I now fully remember why I stopped in the first place. My sex drive is almost nil apart from a couple times each month, I have sudden onset of strong nausea every once in a while, and I’m always moody and slightly depressed. My boyfriend and I have both noticed that there is one week out of the month when I’m happy and myself; the week when I’m taking the green pills. I’ve read through many of the comments and feel pretty much like most. Once I finish this month, I’ll probably discontinue taking this pill again. I know the acne will come back, but there are other things I can do for it, and there’s always midol for the cramps. I’m really sensitive to medications, so I’m not sure what other form of BC we could use other than condoms. If anyone has any advice, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Subj: Headaches and nausea
Date: 3/8/2006
I just started the pill a week ago and I get the worst headaches and nausea. No vomiting, I just feel like I need to. Is this normal when starting the pill, and will it effect the pill if I took over the counter headache medicines?

AskDocWeb: An over the counter headache tab will not affect your birth control pill. If the headaches and nausea continue, ask your doctor about changing your birth control pill.

Subj: Missed a pill
Date: 3/8/2006
I have been taking ortho tri-cyclen for a few years now. I missed a pill yesterday in my 3 week of pills. Normally I take the pill I had missed in the morning of the next day and then take the pill for that day around 5 pm like usual. This time I didn’t notice until I went to take today’s pill that I had missed yesterday’s. I took my pill like usual but when do I take the extra pill?

AskDocWeb: The directions say to take the missed pill as soon as you realize it has been missed. And yes, this could be with the next pill, taking two at one time.

Subj: How long
Date: 3/8/2006
I just started taking OTC-Lo. I’m still on my first week and it seems to be going ok right now, but I’ve been researching how long I have to take it for until I’m guarded from getting pregnant. The info that came with the pill said to wait until after your first week and I’ve seen info on the internet as well saying the same thing. Others have said 2 weeks and my doctor mentioned a month (said it was ok after the first pill pack was done). Which is correct? I don’t want to do anything without knowing for sure but I don’t really want to wait a month either.

AskDocWeb: Well, to be very safe, you are to wait until after your first mensis after starting the pill. Sure others have said two weeks, but why take the chance.

Subj: Effectiveness of birth control
Date: 3/9/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-cylen Low for 4 days (my period had pretty much ended by Sunday)and just had sex. What is the level of effectiveness of this OCP within the first week? Even if I continue taking it?

AskDocWeb: Continue to take it or not, that doesn’t change the effectiveness of the drug, which is none for the first week. That’s why they say to use a backup form of birth control.

Subj: Changing pills
Date: 3/9/2006
Hi, I have taken Alesse for 5 years and have had just a few annoying side effects. I take it at night and am always a little nauseous in the morning – I just have to eat breakfast slowly and it goes away within 30 min. My doctor said I could try ortho-tricyclin lo to see if I did better on that kind. I started taking it 2 weeks ago. I was fine the 1st week, during the 2nd week I started feeling a little more nauseous than normal, and I then I took my first 3rd week pill Tues. night. I woke up 2 hours later really nauseous and I’ve felt like that ever since. I left work early yesterday and didn’t go in today because I feel like I am going to throw up all the time. It’s my only symptoms so I don’t think I have the flu.

I didn’t take it last night and I am not going to finish the rest of the pack because I can’t live like this for the next week. Do I wait until after my next period to go back on Alesse? Do I start my next pack of Alesse right now? If I start it right now do I start at the beginning or on the 3rd week?

Also – I couldn’t possibly be pregnant could I? I just remembered that when you first start the pill you are supposed to use a back up method. I didn’t when I started this new kind this month because I have been taking the pill for 5 years. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

AskDocWeb: The safest course of action would be to use a backup method of birth control when changing pills until your period starts, otherwise yes, you could be pregnant. Please note: Trying to change pills without your doctor’s advice is likely to get you into trouble. Please talk to your doctor about this.

Subj: Break through bleeding
Date: 3/9/2006
I have been taking ortho tri lo for over a year, the 1st 4 months had a lot of break through bleeding, and right now am in the middle of a pack and started bleeding today? What would cause this and what should I do? Thank you for help!

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need a change in birth control pills. Discuss this with your physician.

Subj: After discontinuing the pill
Date: 3/11/2006
I am 18 years old, and have been taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for the past two years. Recently, I decided to stop using the pill beacuse of side effects, but have not regained my normal menstrual cycle. It has been one month and 8 days since I stopped using the pill. Is this normal? And when should I regain my normal menstrual cycle?

AskDocWeb: It can take a full three months for your menstrual cycle to return to normal after discontinuing the birth control pills.

Subj: Hair loss
Date: 3/11/2006
Does Ortho Lo commonly cause hair loss? And if so, why does the lo and not the regular? Is it because of the progestin/estrogen ratio?

AskDocWeb: It seems that all oral contraceptives cause hair loss in a small percentage of women. There is just enough difference in the way women’s bodies respond to these drugs that what may cause hair loss for someone else may not for you and vise versa.

Subj: My story
Date: 3/11/2006
Ok, so I wanted to post my story about what happened. I was put on tri sprintec by mistake. I am a 20 year old female, about 115, and 5’6, so I have a small build. I took the first pack (thinking it was the generic of othro tri cyclen lo) and found out it wasn’t, about 6 hours later I was puking for about 4 hours, and could not stop, I ended up calling my doctor, and they realized they had prescribed me the wrong thing, I switched the next night to the right pill, but still threw up. I stopped for the month and have just began a new cycle of it, and am doing fine, just some normal breast tenderness side effects. Please make sure you take the right pill for your body.

Subj: Tri-Sprintec
Date: 3/13/2006
What is the accuracy of Tri-Sprintec compared to Orthotrycyclene?

AskDocWeb: Tri-Sprintec is a generic version of the Ortho Tri-cyclen.

Subj: Spotting with lo
Date: 3/14/2006
Hi, I am 22 years old and I’ve been on Orthotricyclen lo for 3 months now and I’ve never missed a dose. I have been experiencing spotting the past two days (this month being the 4th month I’m on it). I had never had spotting during the previous 3 months I was on it. Should I be concerned since on their website, it states that spotting is only a side effect during the first 3 months. Also, I have severe acne which was not helped at all by the orthotricyclen lo and I’m going on Accutane next month. Is this birth control brand a good brand to take while on acccutane or is there another brand that’s preferred? Thank you.

AskDocWeb: Ortho tricyclen lo hasn’t helped very many women with their acne problem. A daily cleansing is recommended for acne. And as far as the spotting, this should be addressed by your GYN. Read more feedback
