Subj: More bleeding after the 7th day
Date: 4/26/2006
I just started taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen, its been a week since I took my starter pill. I started it on the day I got my period, and my period usually lasts about 5-7 days. But after I started to use the pill I noticed more bleeding occurred after the 7th day. It’s been 3 day’s since my period and it seems as if I still have it. I have tried looking up information on Spotting and bleeding but nothing has helped. Is something wrong with me?

Kayla

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t sound like there is anything wrong with you. The directions say to start taking your pill the Sunday after your period starts, not when your period starts. Don’t be concerned, your body might take up to three months to become adjusted to your new birth control pills.

Subj: Lost a pill
Date: 4/26/2006
I am currently on ortho-tricyclen lo. On the last day of my light blue pills, I lost the last one, and instead took the first of my dark blue pills. Can I just take an extra dark blue pill instead of the light blue and be okay?

Bonnie

AskDocWeb: If you ask your doctor he will likely tell you to just continue with your pack.

Subj: Skipped a period
Date: 4/26/2006
I have been taking Tri-Sprintec for about 4 months now. At the end of the 3rd month, I skipped the white placebo pills to miss my period. It is now the 3rd week on the 4th pack and I am starting to see some bleeding… is that bad? Like is it just spotting or could it be a sign of pregnancy?

Megan

AskDocWeb: No, it doesn’t sound like you’re pregnant. This is what happens when you try to fool your period into not starting. Your period will be abnormal until it adjusts to the change caused by you not taking the placebo pills.

Subj: Concern about acne
Date: 4/27/2006
My doctor prescribed ortho lo for my acne and am a bit concern about taking them and getting more acne. I never had acne and now am 22. I really don’t know why but I guess it is mostly because of hormones since I usually break out more before my period. Also can I take the pill (my fist time) before my period starts? Am already a week late.

Evelyn

AskDocWeb: No, you cannot begin the pack before your period starts, it has to be started the Sunday after your period starts. If you notice no improvement with your acne, as many haven’t with Ortho lo, try Retin-A. One tiny dab for the entire face should help with the acne.

Subj: Stopped taking Ortho tric cylen
Date: 4/27/2006
I stopped taking Ortho tric cylen about 6 1/2 weeks ago. I had one day of a light, light period and then a day here or there of spotting. When should I expect a full period? Should I be concerned?

Sharon

AskDocWeb: Your period should regulate within the first 90 days. The only thing you need to be concerned about is unprotected sex anytime after stopping the birth control pill.

Subj: How long to wait before having sex?
Date: 4/28/2006
I received my ortho-tricyclin lo pills just yesterday, and haven’t begun yet (I’m still getting the info…my doctor didn’t tell me much about them) I was most depressed when the instructions never included how long to wait before having sexual intercourse…there was a previous reference to this just on one of the pages, and it said about 2 weeks? Is that actually right? I would have predicted about 2-3 months, can somebody help me out?
thanks, much appreciated…

Hailie

AskDocWeb: It is generally agreed that to be absolutely safe, unprotected sex should wait until after the next period starts.

Subj: Too embarrassed to ask
Date: 4/28/2006
Oh gosh, sorry if this has been posted already guys but I’m kind of freaking out. I’m too embarrassed to ask my mom or close friends but I’m a 16 year old girl and I was messing around with my boyfriend. I have gone through one pack of ortho-tri cyclen lo and am about 4 pills into my second pack. Well he was going down on me and fingering me kinda really hard and I started bleeding.

My poor guy didn’t say anything till the end and I felt so horrible cause I didn’t notice. This has happened before, though too, when I was on seasonelle and tried having sex, I bled all over the place without noticing. This doesn’t happen if no one goes into that territory but I’m scared about it happening again, and so is my guy I’m sure. Will this go away? And is this normal?

Erica

AskDocWeb: No, this is not normal. Tell him to stop being so rough on you.

Subj: Symptoms from the pill?
Date: 4/28/2006
I am 21 and have been taking ortho tri yclen for 2 1/2 yrs. I had the usual symptoms and eventually adjusted but last July I noticed some spotting and more frequent yeast infections. In Oct of this year I had a horrible UTI and have had one on a continuous basis sense then. Does anyone know if they could be symptoms from the pill? I have also had horrible cramping and bloating- and yes I went to the doc but they can’t find anything wrong with me. Also, 2 months ago I was given the generic brand -Trinessa at the pharmacy and told it was the same thing and not to worry. Should I stop taking the pill or switch?

Em

AskDocWeb: Typically there are fewer infections while on birth control pills. Talk to your doctor about switching, no one should have to put up with continuous yeast infections and UTI’s?

Subj: Anyone else have this?
Date: 4/29/2006
I have been taking Ortho Tri-cyclen for almost 3 month’s now, I’m noticing when I get to the last 2 row’s of Blue pill’s or the last row of blue, I’m getting really sick through the night, from about 2-4 I’m so sick, dry heave’s and chill’s…then it’s gone and I’m fine during the day~ Has anyone else had this happen in the beginning…Please let me know, thanks.

Subj: Painful cysts
Date: 4/30/2006
I started taking ortho tricyclen 1 month ago and I’m about 5 days into my second month. My face is breaking out with these painful cyst (just in my lower cheeks). Is this because my body is trying to regulate my hormones, or should I stop taking the “pill”. If this gets better with time, how long before the breakouts and moodiness goes away? I’m in a wedding in about 3 weeks, I really don’t want to be worrying about my skin. Somebody who experienced this please HELP ME!

Brooksie

AskDocWeb: That is not a good thing to have just weeks before a wedding but it will take months to get the benefits to your skin from Ortho Tri-cyclen. For more immediate help with the cysts, you should probably see a dermatologist.

Subj: Still get acne on lo
Date: 5/1/2006
I’ve been on Ortho tri-cylcen lo for 2 years now, and I’ve never had any problems with it.. but it is not all I expected. I still get acne pretty bad sometimes, my breasts haven’t grown (which I was hoping for 🙂 ) and I still get bad cramps. I was thinking of switching to regular ortho tri cylen, do you think this will help more?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: The ortho tri cyclen will likely help but your insurance will not cover it, so it will cost more. Several women have complained about Ortho-Lo not helping with acne.

Subj: Head aches and nausea
Date: 5/2/2006
I have been on Lo for about 5 months now. For the past two months I have been experiencing head aches and nausea the last week of my pills. I had a very odd period last month that was not normal for me at all. Is it lo or being pregnant?

Melissa

AskDocWeb: If your period was very light and you know you missed a pill or two, you could be pregnant. Do a home pregnancy test to make sure. You shouldn’t be experiencing headaches and nausea because of the placebo pills.

Subj: Getting worse
Date: 5/3/2006
I was on Kiriva (the generic version of Mircette) for a little over a year, and decided to switch b/c of some side effects (weight gain, moodiness). I finished up the pack I was on, had my period, and switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I took that for about a week, and then started with lite spotting (brown). As time has progressed, the bleeding just gets worse, and it’s like I’m constantly having a period. It’s been this way for about 2 weeks now. I’ve only been on Ortho for about 3 weeks…is this normal? None of this happened with my other pill.

Jess

AskDocWeb: Remember that if anything becomes a concern you should bring it to your doctor’s attention. Missing a dose can cause spotting or light bleeding. Breakthrough bleeding will usually diminish after 3-6 months on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. Weigh yourself at least twice a week and report any sudden weight gain or swelling to your doctor.

Subj: Impossible to lose weight
Date: 5/4/2006
Since starting tri-cyclen I’ve gained 20 lbs and find it impossible to lose weight. I’ve started walking & jogging for 5 months now and I ended up gaining 5 more lbs since. I hate tri-cyclen.

Amy

Subj: Hate Ortho Tricyclen Lo
Date: 5/7/2006
I have been on Ortho Tricyclen Lo for about 5 months. I hate it. I have experienced extreme mood swings, weight gain and loss of sexual drive. I am very tired much of the time. I maintain a low fat diet and jog 4 to 5 times a week and just cannot seem to shed a pound. I know these symptoms are not normal for me. My gynecologist swears these side effects are not caused by this pill. Can anyone confirm my suspicions? Thank you for your help!

Amy

AskDocWeb: Many others have written about their birth control pills causing the same thing.

Subj: Antihistamines and Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo
Date: 5/8/2006
Does taking antihistamines like Claritin alter the effectiveness of Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo?

Amand

AskDocWeb: No, it doesn’t effect your birth control.

Subj: Trying to skip period
Date: 5/8/2006
I have been on orthotryclin lo for 2 1/2 months. It is my first time on the pill at the age of 34. My 1st pack I tried to skip the last week & skip my period. That didn’t work. I had my period on the 8th pill. I bled for 2 weeks & then 2 weeks later had my period again. It has been another 2 1/2 weeks & it is here again. I’m in the middle of a pack. Do I continue where I am or keep starting new packs? Will it ever straighten itself out? Help!

Susan

AskDocWeb: If you continue on from where you are it will straighten itself out. That is, if you stop trying to skip your period. Read more feedback
