Subj: Sugar pills?
Date: 6/28/2006
I am taking Ortho-trycyclen and I was just wondering… am I still protected from pregnancy while I am on the sugar pills?

Danielle

AskDocWeb: As you know you go through a cycle each month. Part of that cycle has to do with fertility. You cycle back and forth between being fertile and infertile. The sugar pills are taken during the time when you are not fertile. That is the period of time when you can’t get pregnant, even with no protection. The sugar pills help you remember to take a pill every day.

Subj: Allergic to Ortho Tricyclen lo?
Date: 6/29/2006
Hi, I have bin using ortho tricyclen lo. I had no side affects at all. I was fine for the first two months trying it out, and near the end of the third month, I woke up one morning with a serious rash all over my body. I didn’t think it would be the pill. It got worse the next day I was till taking it. So I tried going off it. It went away after it got out of my system. Can I actually be allergic to this pill? Would there be some other pill I can take and not have this reaction again?

Amanda

AskDocWeb: Unless you started another med of some sort then yes, you could be allergic to these pills. There are other pills you can take, but you will have to consult with your physician. He knows which one will work best for you.

Subj: Just starting
Date: 6/29/2006
I just started tri-cyclen 2 days ago on the first day of my period. My wedding is in a few days and I was wondering how long will it take for my period to go away?

Andy

AskDocWeb: Oh boy, you will not be protected against pregnancy by the time of your wedding day, and for the first three months your period will likely be irregular. You will also have to use another form of birth control for a few weeks to make sure you do not become pregnant.

Subj: Ortho-tri-cyclen
Date: 6/29/2006
I am very happy with Orthotricyclen. I must say that it doesn’t make my skin as clear as it used to, I’ve been on it for about 2 years. I have gained about 13-15 pounds since I’ve been on it, and my breasts have increased in size. Occasionally I get nauseous when I start up a new pack, but other than that I have no complaints.

Subj: Instructions for taking pills
Date: 6/29/2006
Hi, I am presently taking Ortho Tri-Cyclean Lo … today is my 20th day of my pill … can you tell me when I get my periods … is it after starting the second pack of my pills … do we need to take the second pack after completing the first pack of pills(after the dark green pills) … Waiting for your reply…..

Madhu

AskDocWeb: The instructions say to continue taking the next pack immediately upon finishing up the first pack of pills without a break in-between. That way you take a pill every day continuously to maintain the habit of taking them. It makes remembering to take them easier.

Subj: DAW
Date: 6/29/2006
What is the difference b/w othro tri and tri sprintec? My stupid doctor didn’t put “DAW” in the box and my prescription was filled generically. I am unsure about using it. It is a lo dose?

Lita

AskDocWeb: Your doctor doesn’t need to put DAW on the script, it’s what your insurance will cover. Tri-Sprintec is a generic form of Ortho Tri-cyclen.

Subj: Severe brown discharge
Date: 6/29/2006
Hi, I have currently been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for about a month. My skin has already cleared up dramatically, which was my reasoning for resorting to the pill in the first place. BUT I am having a severe brown discharge. I am worried and don’t know if maybe this is part of my body’s adjustment to the pill or if this could maybe be a severe problem. I have made an appt with my gyno, but it isn’t until next week. I’d like some help/advice if possible. Thank you!

Jessica

AskDocWeb: You’re okay. This brown discharge is usually not a severe problem and it will stop given time. It’s just your uterus lining sloughing off. The first 90 days you will see different things happening, like irregular periods or spotting.

Subj: Acne is worse
Date: 7/1/2006
I have been on ortho-tri cyclen lo for a year and recently started yasmin and have seen worse acne than before. Should this proceed or should I try something else? Is it because of the change in bc methods?

Jacque

AskDocWeb: Yes, it could easily be the change in birth control methods.

Subj: What pills?
Date: 7/1/2006
What pills can you take (sequence) of pills to prevent unwanted pregnancy from unprotected sex while on pill…

Jmplmt

AskDocWeb: You can take the morning after pill, but there isn’t a sequence of birth control pills that will work.

Subj: Terrible mood swings on Lo
Date: 7/1/2006
I have been taking Lo for about a month now and have had terrible mood swings, and I am very short tempered. I thought maybe I was the only one who felt this way, but I can’t take it anymore. I feel sorry for the people who have to be with me everyday. I am very irritable and the weirdest things make me mad. I am definitely going to consult my doctor about Lo.

Sarah

Subj: Am I being paranoid?
Date: 7/2/2006
I was just recently switched to OTCL, because I have been having trouble with spotting (I was on Mircette for 2.5 years and all of a sudden was getting spotting every other month). I just finished my first month of OTCL and had spotting the last week, which I pretty much expected. My period was very, very light though, and that kind of concerns me. I really felt like I only had my period for about a day and a half. Is that normal? I almost couldn’t tell the difference between my period and the spotting. Kind of makes me nervous and brings up thoughts of possibly being pregnant. Am I just being paranoid?

Melissa

AskDocWeb: As long as you used a backup form of birth control condoms for the first two to four weeks you should be fine. It’s always a good idea to use a backup form of birth control when you change birth control pills.

Subj: Ortho-lo pill
Date: 7/2/2006
I just started my very first Ortho-lo pill tonight. Silly me I did not see this website until about an hour after I took the Pill. I am so scared now of what could happen. I was wondering if it is safe for me to just stop all together after only taking the one pill.

Melissa

AskDocWeb: There is no need to be concerned about taking one pill. Nothing will happen with just one pill. Talk with your doctor about what upsets you about this and get your questions answered.

Subj: Horrible Mood swings with Ortho Lo
Date: 7/3/2006
I started taking Ortho Lo in May. I did not experience any nausea. The first month I spotted for 1 1/2 weeks and had a long painful period. I didn’t mind the swollen boobs. BUT I feel as if it’s hard to concentrate on tasks, I’m unmotivated to do anything, as well as exercising, which I used to love. I’ve gained about 3 pounds. I notice that on the 2 1/2-3 weeks of the pill which is halfway from the light blue through the dark blue. I’ve gotten these horrible mood swings. I would get angry over the littlest thing, extreme road rage, cry about anything. My boyfriend thought I was going nuts. I was always easy going and I hate fighting. We were always arguing during this time period. On one occasion I went thru an anxiety attack, I was crying nonstop and I didn’t know what was wrong with me. it was as if I was watching myself turn into this monster.

After my 1st month period, I was extremely happy until now. I’m on my dark blue pills once again. I’m extremely tired and MOODY!!! Just last night my boyfriend and I had an argument and I started hitting him and crying. I also have no sex drive, which is very weird. My friend that is also taking ortho lo said the same thing. I’ve been feeling sad about my life and the way I’ve been acting. I don’t feel like it’s worth it to turn into such a monster in front of friends and family. I am considering switching immediately.

Jessica

AskDocWeb: Yes, it sounds like that would be a good idea.

Subj: Any weight gain?
Date: 7/3/2006
I have been off birth control for about 1 year now due to an increase of acne. The only birth control that has helped in the past, which was about 6 years ago was ortho-triCyclen, it worked great for me. It cleared up my acne and I saw less facial hair growth, and no weight gain. But it gave me horrible headaches, and I loss alot of weight I went from 108 too 100. I got off it and tried others, but my problem was increased acne. I have recently went on the generic brand of Ortho, Tri-sprintec. My question is, since I have tried at least 4 other birth controls in the 4 years and never gained weight do you think I will gain weight with this one. I don’t know too much about this particular one?

Erickalea

AskDocWeb: Yes, you may gain weight. Drug companies have increased the amount of expected weight gain from birth control pills. It used to be from 10 to 15 pounds, now they are saying you can expect to gain 20 pounds when you take their birth control pills.

Subj: Need instructions for starting birth control
Date: 7/3/2006
I took the pill for a week and then forgot to take it for four days. I then stop the pill, but did start bleeding after. Do I need to count the next cycle from that date or lmp?

Krista

AskDocWeb: The instructions say to wait until your period starts and then start a new pack. If you mess up, call your doctor to get instructions.

Subj: Birth control for hair growth?
Date: 7/4/2006
I just started Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo two days ago and I was prescribed it in order to possibly help me with my hair loss. I am 19 and I have been gradually been losing hair over the past year and a half, with the past couple months being the worst and since I have tried pretty much everything in order to stop this, I thought I would try birth control and have hormones counterbalance my hair loss. I am not even taking the pill for birth control, my main concern in life right now is my hair. Is birth control in general a bad idea? I have read horror stories about what happens when you stop. Is Yasmin a better pill for my situation? Lost & confused. Please help!

Kayla

AskDocWeb: No, generally speaking birth control pills are not a solution for hair growth, most of them cause hair loss. You are more likely to have success with Rogaine for Women.

Subj: On Ortho Tri-cyclen at 15
Date: 7/4/2006
I just started Ortho Tri-cyclen 2 weeks ago I had some bad mood swings but things already seem to be calming down. I’m 15 and not sexually active. I don’t even want to be on birth control but I had no choice, I had too because my hormones were so messed up and I couldn’t handle all the irregular periods and horrible mood swings. I’ve heard so much controversy on this pill though some people say it works great and some people say it is horrible. But being I’m only 15 and this is the first type of birth control I’ve ever used could it be different with me. I have mild acne so far I haven’t noticed a difference but does it just take awhile? I really just want my normal life back.

Becca

AskDocWeb: It will take up to three months for your body to get used to the drug so be patient. Ortho Tri-cyclen is one of the best birth control pills on the market and it does help with acne although it may take a few weeks. If you notice mood swings or any changes in your behavior report this to your doctor. Some women wait too long to report changes and there is no need for that, report them right away.
