Subj: Trying to get pregnant
Date: 7/5/2006
I was on Ortho Tri-cyclen for 4 years. I stopped about 7 or 8 months ago. The first month I had a regular period, then it skipped a month, then they were regular again for 3 months, then it skipped a month and now I assume that it is regular again. I am trying to get pregnant and I’m so tired of seeing negative. How long will it actually take? I just want to rule out the fact that there could be something wrong with me…I’m 22, with no health problems, I don’t smoke or drink, and I have a 5 year old already…

Kristy

AskDocWeb: Your doctor can help you rule out any possible problems. Keep in mind that the more relaxed you are during sex the more likely you are to be successful. That’s why some women have to give up on getting pregnant before it happens.

Subj: Brown spotting
Date: 7/5/2006
I’ve been on ortho tri cyclen low for a year and a half and never really have had any troubles, although after I have sex, I experience a light amount of brown spotting that won’t stop until my period is over. Is this breakthrough bleeding normal?

E.O.

AskDocWeb: Yes this is normal at the end of your period. If this happens every time you have sex and not during your period, go to your doctor and have a pelvic exam to see what is going on.

Subj: Appetite change
Date: 7/5/2006
I was on ortho tri-cyclen for about 2 1/2 years and then was switched to the generic brand trinessa. If you tend to get a lot of yeast infections I would not recommend it. I also had a lot of UTI’s (urinary tract infections) and they stopped after I stopped taking the pill. Is it normal for your appetite to change any after you discontinue the pill? I feel hungry all the time. Thank you,

Em

AskDocWeb: Yes, this is normal for some people and it will subside. You just need to watch yourself for awhile that you do not over indulge.

Subj: Weight gain?
Date: 7/5/2006
I was on Ortho Tri-cyclen for about a year or 2, I got off because of the weight gain. However, other than that I had no problems while on the pill. Will Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo make me gain weight and does this cause hair loss? Should I just stick to what I know? Reading some of this stuff has me scared.

Brandy

AskDocWeb: You might want to stick to what you know. Now they are saying that instead of the 10-15 lb. weight gain with Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo, women can expect a 20 lb. weight gain. And yes, it may cause hair loss too.

Subj: How long before I’m protected?
Date: 7/5/2006
I am taking Tri-Sprintec substituted for Ortho Tri-cyclen 28. I was not on any other birth control prior to this. When my pill was prescribed to me, I was only advised to take one daily but was not instructed WHEN to start. I began taking my prescription that same day even though my period had ended about 2.5 weeks prior. My question is how long before I’m protected without the use of a condom or other contraceptive?

Tina

AskDocWeb: To be safe wait until your period starts and read the directions that came with the birth control pills as to when you start. It’s usually the Sunday after your period starts. Manufacturers recommend using a backup form of birth control for at least 2 weeks, up to a maximum of 4 weeks to be sure.

Subj: Ortho Trocyclin Lo sucks
Date: 7/6/2006
I’ve been on Ortho Trocyclin Lo for 3 months now, I am beginning my 4th on Tuesday, but I’m considering switching to a different method pending a doctor’s visit. The side effects I’m having totally suck. This month, starting 2 weeks ago (at the end of the light blue) I though I might be pregnant, but I had been practicing safe sex, and had been on the pill on schedule and all that so I kept taking it. last month, my period started with 3 dark blues left to take, and this month, I’m 3 days into the green (placebo) before it started. my stomach has been cramping really bad, and I’ve felt like vomiting a lot. I’ve also been very fatigued, and still feeling tired after 9 hours of sleep.
When I first started taking the pills, I was very moody, and I lashed out on people who didn’t deserve it. the moodiness subsided with a little work at consideration for others, but I still feel moody.

But mainly, the abdominal pain and the fact that my cycle is still irregular, totally sucks. I shouldn’t feel like I’m pregnant… that’s the whole reason that I’m on BC anyway.

Subj: Planning a pregnancy
Date: 7/7/2006
I am 26 years old I currently taking orthro-tricylen lo. I have been on the pill for 6 years. Will it take me a long time to get pregnant? I would like to know is it best to see a doctor for a physical or ob-gyn before I start planning for a family.

Altheria

AskDocWeb: No, it shouldn’t take you long to become pregnant, but everyone is different. Some may take up to a year and others only a month or two. You might have a pap smear done by your OB-GYN to make sure everything is normal, but that’s about it.

Subj: Got pregnant while using trisprintec
Date: 7/7/2006
I was using trisprintec for about a year, but went to FL and had my pills transferred. Where I went gave me trinessa and told me that it was just as good. I took it for 2 months. First month I was fine. I was using condoms as back up. I came home at the end of May and started having violent stomach pains and never got my period at the end of May’s cycle. I called my doctor and she told me to take a pregnancy test, and now I am 9 weeks pregnant with our 5th child. We were planning on not having anymore children. Not once did the pharmacy tell me about trinessa being recalled. I guess for now it is back on the shelves, but I have found a lot of woman in the same situation as me, so I think it is still not reliable at all.

Subj: What’s going on?
Date: 7/8/2006
I am 21 years old and sexually active. I have been on ortho tricyclen lo for about a year and a half now. I had normal breakthrough bleeding when I started the prescription, and also when I did use it to delay a period (about 3 months ago). However…I am spotting again and am not sure why. I am into the final active pills of my pack and started spotting 2 days into them…what could be going on??

Jenn

AskDocWeb: Do a home pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant. If you have been ill or have had more stress in your life than usual, that can also change your periods. If these are negative make an appointment with your doctor for a consultation.

Subj: Acne help?
Date: 7/9/2006
I have been using the generic form of Ortho Tri Cyclen. I’ve been on it for months now and my skin hasn’t gotten even the slightest bit better. I never miss a pill either. I was just wondering if the positive skin effects that are constantly attributed to Ortho Tri Cyclen go for the generic as well. Is there a difference between the two in terms of skin improvement?

Amy

AskDocWeb: The generic form of Ortho tricyclen has not been reported to help with acne.

Subj: Gained weight
Date: 7/9/2006
Hi, I have been on ortho tricyclin lo for a couple of weeks now and I am broke out and also feel like I have gained weight, is this normal and will it go away?

Belinda

AskDocWeb: Up to a 20 lb. weight gain is to be expected as long as you are on this pill. Many others have also reported their acne becoming a problem while on Lo.

Subj: OTC for acne
Date: 7/10/2006
My 14yo daughter was prescribed OTC for acne. She is on her 2nd month week 3, and her acne just seems to be getting worse. Is this normal? How long should we give it?

Molly

AskDocWeb: We suggest you have her see a dermatologist for his recommendation.

Subj: Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo acne
Date: 7/10/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for 3 cycles. I have 2 children and have never been on birth control pills except as a teen 17 years ago and with no regularity. I am finding that I am moody, irritable, extremely tired even after 9 to 10 hours of sleep and my face and neck looks like an acne plagued teenager. Has anyone else experienced these same symptoms? I called my doctor’s office and the nurse said that my hormones were probably still regulating themselves. But after 3 months? The worst part is my complexion. I have never had acne problems so I know this is directly related to this pill. How long should it take to regulate my hormones and for my skin to clear up. This is probably why I’ve been so moody because I look like S*#t. Help!

Amanda

AskDocWeb: You might want to consult with your doctor about changing your birth control. There have been complaints that Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo has not helped with acne problems and sometimes seems to cause more acne.

Subj: Trinessa off the market?
Date: 7/11/2006
I was just recently prescribed Trinessa by my doctor. I wanted to do some research about Trinessa, and I have heard that is was taken off the shelves due to bad FDA approval. I just wanted to know should I stop using it or continue to use it?

Dnia

AskDocWeb: That was a temporary thing due to a bad batch that wasn’t strong enough to prevent pregnancy. And yes, there were some pregnancies because of it. We listed the lot numbers of the bad pills at the bottom of this page. If you have any doubts you can check to make sure you avoid the bad ones.

Subj: Horrible mood swings
Date: 7/11/2006
I started on Orthocept (not triphasil) at age 20 with horrible mood swings. Switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen and was on for approx. 7 years with no side effects. Had my daughter and tried to stay off birth control completely. (My periods are very irregular long duration and painful when I am not on BC). Went back on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and decided to try generic (Tri-Nessa) 1 year ago for $$ savings. I had migraine strength headaches which would start the day of the white pills every cycle and last the full 7 days, as well as mood swings, loss of sex drive. Went back on Ortho Tri-Cyclen – back to normal. My insurance company now says they will not cover Ortho Tri-Cyclen but will cover Tri-Nessa or Tri-Sprintec. I do not want to go back on Tri-Nessa for fear of headaches and other and wanted to know if anyone had an experience with Tri-Sprintec. Thanks!

Subj: Took 8 pills at once
Date: 7/11/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-cylen for years and love it but here is my problem…please help…I don’t – won’t to ask my Doctor. I think he will yell at me…I have tried finding the answer on the computer but can’t find it…I am 28 and planning to go off the pill (just to be more natural for my body) so on June 18, 2006 when my new pack would have started I didn’t start…well then one week went by and my husband and I got into a little fight and I got upset and mad and grabbed my pack and took 8 pills all that one day…June 18th-June 25th. Then I took one pill everyday until the pack was gone. I did feel a little nausea but that was my only symptom. So my question is has anyone ever had something like this happen? Did I totally screw up my body or by now do you think the first 8 pills of my pack that I took all in one day are out of my system?

Abby

AskDocWeb: Your period is likely to be abnormal and you may have some breakthrough bleeding but don’t worry, you haven’t injured yourself. Just start your new pack as usual. Read more feedback
