Subj: Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo nausea
Date: 7/12/2006
I began taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo after having a miscarriage about 5 months ago. I just recently began feeling sick to my stomach in the evening … I am now thinking about going off the Pill completely or just trying to take it at night as opposed to in the morning, or switching to another brand … any suggestions? Thanks
Tamara
AskDocWeb: If you talk with your doctor about the nausea and he probably will change your birth control.
Subj: Heavy clotting and cramping
Date: 7/12/2006
I have been on ortho try-cyclen for just about 3 months and I’m almost halfway into my third pack and I started my period again. It’s heavier than normal with heavier clotting and cramping. Is this normal?
Kym
AskDocWeb: Yes, heavy clotting and cramping can be normal in the third month, after that it would be unusual.
Subj: Hair loss from birth control pills?
Date: 7/13/2006
I just had a few questions. I am 37 and have been losing hair since 1997. I used to have thick hair then I permed it and that’s when I started to notice I was getting bald at the top of my scalp then about the same time we switched from well water to city water! I am currently using Toppik hair fibers I am happy with the results it has boost my confidence alot! It’s a great quick fix to my problem but I was wondering if there has been any findings about birth control pills causing hairloss because I have been taking that for many years. Please e-mail me if you know anything about this? Thanks,
Dawn of Portland, Oregon
AskDocWeb: Yes, others have reported loosing hair from being on birth control pills.
Subj: Concern about heartbeat
Date: 7/14/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen before and it helped with my acne quite a bit. I am 32 and my skin is awful. I DO smoke and I drink socially and have been back on the pill again for the first time in three years. It has helped my skin clear up and for that I am grateful; however, my heartbeat is rapid every now and then—nothing alarming—just discernible, and I have cut down on smoking below half-a-pack a day, which is tremendous progress for someone like me. I would like to exercise, but I fear raising my heartbeat even more. I do not want to have a heart attack. I realize that is dramatic, but better safe than sorry. Is it safe to exercise? Nothing hardcore, just regular regimen…thanking you in advance. This is a wonderful forum for women, by the way.
Charlotte
AskDocWeb: If you have a concern you need to do something about it, like having an EKG done at your doctors office to make sure there is nothing wrong. Tell your doctor that you want to start exercising and about the rapid heartbeat. You can start slowly on exercising by walking a set distance each day and gradually increasing that over time. As you probably know, the directions for birth control say that you shouldn’t smoke at all, but we know how that goes.
Subj: Ortho LO
Date: 7/14/2006
Hi… I have been on ortho LO for just about two weeks. It’s the first and only kind of BC I’ve tried. I like it a lot, it doesn’t make me bloated or anything. It makes me feel fine, I don’t feel any different.
Christy
Subj: Bleeding for 3 weeks
Date: 7/15/2006
Hi, I stopped taking my ortho tri lo’s in my 3rd pack during my white pills. *about the 4th white pill* I quite because I was bleeding for about 3 weeks straight and I am sick of it, before this it was 2 months straight on the yasmine pills! I have been having feelings like I am pregnant, but I guess I am not suppose to get my period yet. Maybe around the 20th. What are the chances I am pregnant?
Shnooky
AskDocWeb: Since you had been bleeding for 3 weeks straight, your doctor should be notified about this and yes you could possibly be pregnant, so do a home pregnancy test to find out.
Subj: Migraines
Date: 7/15/2006
I am 44 and have migraines every month for the past 3 years. I am going to start birth control pills in the hopes it will even my hormonal imbalance, which do you suggest. Also my fear is that I will lose sexual drive. I am healthy otherwise, don’t smoke, not overweight and am very active.
Bobi
AskDocWeb: Some lose their sexual drive and some don’t, it tends to affect everyone in different ways. We suggest you try to find the cause of the migraines. It sounds like you’re assuming the migraines are caused by an imbalance in your hormones. Have you eliminated other causes such as MSG (monosodium glutamate), aspartame, etc.? If you are taking any other medication, check this list. Drugs that are prescribed for migraines include the following:
- Advil Migraine Liquigels
- Amerge Tablets
- Axert Tablets
- Hyland’s Migraine Headache Relief Tablets
- Imitrex Injection
- Imitrex Nasal Spray
- Imitrex Tablets
- Maxalt Tablets
- Maxalt-MLT Orally Disintegrating Tablets
- Relpax Tablets
- Zomig Nasal Spray
- Zomig Tablets
- Zomig-ZMT Tablets
Subj: From Depo to Ortho Lo
Date: 7/15/2006
Is your period right away going to be normal with ortho lo? I was on depo for 4 years and this is my second pack and no bleeding yet. I was just curious. Thanks,
Kelley
AskDocWeb: No, your first three months of mensis may not be normal, especially since you’ve been on the Depo injection.
Subj: ITP and Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 7/16/2006
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with acute ITP blood disorder. It went away in about a month. Now I noticed that a have 2 bruises on my arm, similar to the ones I had a year ago. Could the ITP be back due to taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo?
Niki
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need to get another appointment with your doctor and have this checked. ITP may be drug induced from taking heparin, quinidine, or sulfonamides but we have not heard of it being caused by Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.
ITP stands for immune thrombocytopenic purpura. This is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a low platelet count and bleeding in mucous membranes and skin. There are about 10 cases per 100,000 people per year, mostly in children 2 to 4 years old but also in young women (under 40 years old). In adults, ITP is usually chronic. Only about 5% of adults have spontaneous remission.
Subj: Ortho tricyclen lo side effects
Date: 7/16/2006
I have been on Ortho tricyclen lo for about 4 months and have had about 90% of the listed side effects. Nausea (all the time), Vomiting (in the middle of a concert in front of 3000 people), weight gain (about 3 pounds in my mid section), breast tenderness, breast enlargement (went from a full C to a D…and growing), headaches, bloating, acne, anxiety, dizziness, feeling of not being yourself, eating less (which you would think would result in weight loss), moody (not extreme, but being emotionally sensitive), even flatulence (which someone had mentioned that they experienced this too). I know it could be worse with breakthrough bleeding, but I am going to switch pills. **Please note that the side effects are not guaranteed to go away after 3 months. The only side effect that went away for me was the acne. I just wanted to let everyone know of the side effects that I have had so they know they are not going crazy!

Subj: Missed period
Date: 7/17/2006
I was on ortho tri-cyclen for a couple years…I finished the last pack and had no more refills left. My doc said I needed to wait for my next period to start a new pack. I have been having unprotected sex with my boyfriend and still no period…my last period was in April. I have not started a new pack because I am still waiting. I had a negative pregnancy test? Will I get my period? Could the pills have caused me to miss my period for this long?
Ashley
AskDocWeb: Yes, but do another pregnancy test a week apart to make sure you are not pregnant.
Subj: Left hand tingling
Date: 7/18/2006
I have been on Ortho Lo for a week now after switching from the Ring. My left hand has been tingling now for 3 days. Kind of like what happens after you have fell asleep on it. I know this is not a normal reaction, but could it be from the new medication?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: It’s not likely to be from the medication. Sounds like you should talk with your doctor.
Subj: Acne problem
Date: 7/18/2006
I took BCP’s in my early 20’s as contraception- now at 33 I started taking them to treat moderate acne. I first took Jasmin which was great for acne but I felt nauseated all the time. My doctor switched me to OTC (actually the generic trinessa 28) and the nausea persists- sometimes it is even hard to eat. What is different about these pills and other BCP’s. Are there any other brands that can help with acne that might not make me nauseated. I don’t want to go back on retin-A.
Marianne
AskDocWeb: The only one that has been reported to help with acne is the Ortho Tri-cyclen, which the insurance companies don’t seem to cover anymore.
Subj: Going off the pill
Date: 7/18/2006
I have been on Ortho tri-cyclen’s generic brand Trinessa for two and a half years, but will be getting off of it in two weeks to begin trying to start a family. It has been wonderful. Are there any side effects caused by getting off of it?
Jessica
AskDocWeb: Your periods will probably be abnormal for a few months, but other than that, nothing.
Subj: Awful mood swings
Date: 7/19/2006
I have been on Trinessa for just over 3 months now. I have had absolutely awful mood swings where I hate everyone and everything for no reason, I cry like a freaking baby too often for this to be normal. I was told to just wait and let my body get used to it but it’s to the point where I just don’t know if it’s worth it. I’ve been under quite a bit of stress lately, was diagnosed with IBS, but am now thinking it may just be this pill. Do you know of any connections between birth control and irritable bowel syndrome?
CAT
AskDocWeb: There is no connection with BC and IBS. Since you’ve been on it for three months and still have the mood swings maybe it’s time to talk with your doctor about changing.
