Subj: 2-4 hours late taking the pill
Date: 7/29/2006
I have a question, I’m just about to finish my first month of ortho tri cyclen and am still not sure what happens if you do not take the pill at the exact same time everyday. I’ve never forgotten to take a pill but I have been 2-4 hours late a few times. Do I need to use a secondary protection when this happens. Thanks so much!
Ashlee
AskDocWeb: No you don’t if you’re only 2-4 hours late, that’s ok. If you don’t take it in the same time period, the 98% effectiveness drops lower. That’s why you need to be sure to take it at the same time every day. You do not need to use other methods if you’re only 2-4 hours late, but avoid making it a habit.
Subj: How long to get pregnant?
Date: 7/30/2006
Me and my boyfriend are thinking about getting pregnant and I was wondering how long it will take once I’m off of the pill to get pregnant.
Brittany
AskDocWeb: There is no way to tell ahead of time. You could become pregnant a month after discontinuing the pill, 6 months after, or it might take a year.
Subj: How long to start working?
Date: 7/30/2006
I’m planing to use the pill. I have two kids and I’m in a relationship now, but he’s scare that if I use the pill I may get pregnant. How long does it take for the pills to start working? Maybe 2-3 days? Thanks,
Chacha
AskDocWeb: Sorry, you won’t be protected in just 2 or 3 days. To be safe, it’s more like 3 weeks. You are more likely to get pregnant if you don’t use a birth control pill.
Subj: Forgetting to take pills
Date: 7/31/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for almost a year now. With my busy hectic schedule I often forget to take a pill, the next day I have to take two. My periods are for the most part regular. I did however this past month clot an awful lot. This hasn’t happened since before I started taking the pill because of heavy flows and other problems like strong cramping. I am not sure if I miscarried or if the pill is just not as strong as it was when I started taking it. What should I do?
Stacy
AskDocWeb: You should consider the fact that every time you miss a pill your protection drops several percentage points and your chances of getting pregnant increase. As an alternative, you may want to talk to your doctor about getting an IUD instead of taking pills for birth control.
Subj: Diarrhea
Date: 7/31/2006
I have been on Trinessa for 5 1/2 months now and have symptoms that I have never had before. Since late May I have been getting diarrhea about once to twice a week, a burning sensation in my belly, and just recently stomach aches. My doctor thinks I have IBS. I’m suppose to see a GI doctor on August 21st. Could this be from my birth control or a digestive disorder?
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: This sounds more like to digestive disorder than your birth control. IBS stands for irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is one form of digestive order.
Subj: Bacteria and pregnancy
Date: 8/2/2006
Does bacteria affect pregnancy?
Dorathy
AskDocWeb: Yes, many bacterial infections will affect a pregnancy. If you are concerned that you might have one and are not being treated, make an appointment with your doctor.
Subj: Overreacting and crying a lot
Date: 8/3/2006
I took Orthotricyclen for a couple of years with no problems. I switched to ortho tricylen lo within the last year and recently I have been really moody, bitchy, overreacting and crying a lot over something silly. Sometimes it feels like I can’t stop crying. I guess I have been this way for a while, I just never noticed it until now. I thought I was going crazy but now I think it’s the pill.

Subj: SlimQuick
Date: 8/4/2006
I have been on ortho tri-cyclen for 5 months. Recently I started taking SlimQuick to loose weight. My question is can it interfere with the hormones? Can I become pregnant although am taking the pill every day?
shasna
AskDocWeb: No, it won’t affect the effectiveness of your birth control pill.
Subj: Question about ortho
Date: 8/6/2006
Can taking ortho also help you have a baby and does it make you fertile?
Kia
AskDocWeb: No, it’s purpose is to prevent you from becoming pregnant. It does not make you more fertile.
Subj: Am I paranoid?
Date: 8/7/2006
I have been taking orthotricyclen lo for several months and came off of it in May….I had protected sex using a condom at the end of June, right before I was expecting my period to arrive…my period arrived the very next day…it is now August and my period is five days late….I decided to take a home pregnancy test because I was paranoid and it came out negative…should I still be worried that I am pregnant or is this missed period because of coming off the pill? Please get back to me.
Shayla
AskDocWeb: This may occur just from coming off of the pill, but it pays to be careful. If you are continuing to have sex then some form of birth control is required in order to avoid getting pregnant. Using a foam contraceptive along with the condom is a good idea to be safe. Some people use two condoms in case one would break, or one might have a hole in it. Although using two condoms is not generally recommended because it is supposed to make breakage more likely. However, we have yet to see any research to back that up.
Subj: Just switched to Ortho Tri Cyclin lo
Date: 8/7/2006
I just switched to Ortho Tri Cyclin lo from Trivora… the day before my last actual pill (not the sugar pill) I started getting brown discharge and really bad cramps. I am scared that this is something wrong with me!
Erin
AskDocWeb: No, it’s okay. Your body is just becoming used to the new pill. Next month your period should be more regular. Just remember to take the pill everyday at the same time.
Subj: Too many side effects
Date: 8/8/2006
I have been on the tricyclen lo for about 3 months now and I basically want to stab my own eyes out. I had been on the tricyclen for 10yrs and started to spot between periods, I was switched to minorval to help stop the bleeding but hated the side effects…..no on the lo, I have migraines all the time, my skin is a mess, I had a period for 4 weeks, I have muscle pain and I have been really depressed which sucks as I am already on antidepressants. I’m getting married in 3weeks and I’m sure with my moods, the groom is having second thoughts. I will be going off them at the end of this cycle. I hate them.

Subj: Severe moodiness
Date: 8/8/2006
Hey I just wanted to let people know that Ortho-Trycyclin works really well. I’d recommend it to anybody considering BC. Although I’ve personally experienced some severe moodiness while being on the pill. I was wondering if that was normal and if maybe switching to Ortho Lo would help decrease me mood swings?
Erica
AskDocWeb: It may or may not. Each birth control pill affects each woman differently. You shouldn’t have to suffer with severe mood swings just because of a birth control. If the mood swings are severe then talk with your doctor about changing to another pill.
Subj: Pills get stuck
Date: 8/8/2006
Sometimes when I take my pill, it gets stuck in my throat for long periods of time, even after I eat food, is that bad, and could I be pregnant?
Jenna
AskDocWeb: Have you tried drinking a glass of water with your pill? Since it feels like it is stuck even after a meal then you should probably talk to your doctor about this. Not because you may be or get pregnant but because there may be another problem that needs medical attention.
Subj: Weight gain with Ortho Tri and abnormal smell
Date: 8/9/2006
I started on Ortho Tri Lo and after a month switched to Ortho Tri. I immediately put on weight. In the past 3 months I have gained roughly 10 lbs. I’ve always had a consistent weight and I ballooned right away. My mood swings are fine but what I have noticed is alot more discharge. Normal color but not the pleasantest of smells. I’ve never had this problem. I didn’t have it on the shot or ortho lo it started right after I started ortho tri. Anyone have this problem? I know it’s not bad hygiene but very embarrassing. What causes this? Is there any way to control it besides stopping ortho?
Not pleased
AskDocWeb: The odor may indicate that something new is happening. Please talk with your doctor about this.
Subj: Concerned about mood
Date: 8/9/2006
I had very bad acne and I was over 30! My gyno gave me Ortho Tricyclen and it really helped to clear it up. At one point I switched to Ortho-Lo and that was a huge mistake for me. I was so moody and irritable and just felt awful – so I switched back to regular Ortho. Now – my prescription plan switched me to the Generic – Tri-Sprintec and I’m really nervous because I’m afraid I’m going to get extremely cranky and moody again. If anybody has any experience with Tri-Sprintec (I think it’s new) – please write and let me know how it’s working for you. When I’m NOT on the pill – I have very bad PMS – so my BC pill controls that for me.

Subj: Still bleeding
Date: 8/10/2006
I was on depo for 7 years and never had a period. I have been off for 3 years now. I just started taking ortho to get my cycle back regular. I have been on the pills going on three weeks and I am still bleeding. What can be causing this problem. I had to periods in one month which was March and now my doctor put me on ortho to regulate my periods but I can’t stop bleeding.
Lo
AskDocWeb: Go back to your doctor if your mensis consists of clotting and/or severe abdominal pains. If your mensis doesn’t regulate itself within 3 packs you might want to talk with your doctor about changing your birth control pills. Read more feedback
