Subj: Stopping the pill
Date: 8/27/2006
I have been taking Ortho Tricyclen since March and I still have spotting and breakthrough bleeding. I want to stop taking the pill for that reason. Can I just stop taking it at any time?

Candice

AskDocWeb: Yes, you can stop at any time, but we suggest to stop at the end of the pack to hold off getting your period earlier. It will take a few months for your period to become regular again.

Subj: Trinessa
Date: 8/28/2006
I use to take Ortho-TriCylen. When I went to the Pharmacist. My doctor gave me a prescription for Ortho but because of my insurance I could only get the generic brand called “Trinessa” is this birth control any good this is my second day taking it?

Cassandra

AskDocWeb: If you are looking for help with acne, it won’t. Some of the complaints we’ve received about Trinessa include a daily discharge, manic moodiness, sore breasts, weight gain, lethargy, problems with contacts due to irritation and puffy eyes, increased bust size, and viginal itching and dryness.

Subj: Sex on the first day of the pill?
Date: 8/28/2006
This is my second day on the pill and I just had sex…am I not safe? Should I take the day after pill? I thought that the pill worked the first day you took it, but I don’t want to take ANY chances, please let me know asap!

Lisa

AskDocWeb: You are NOT safe, take the day after pill if you want. To be absolutely safe from becoming pregnant most sources say to use a backup form of birth control for one month before you have sex or at least for 2 weeks.

Subj: Stopped tri-nessa
Date: 8/28/2006
I just stopped taking tri-nessa, since last week. I’m trying to have another baby. What would you recommend to do? Will my period be longer now that I stopped?

Tiffany

AskDocWeb: Your period will probably be irregular for a few months but there’s nothing you can do about that, sorry.

Subj: Acne after discontinuing the pill
Date: 8/28/2006
I discontinued use of ortho tri-cyclen about 6 months ago. I have never really had much of an acne problem until I stopped taking it. Had I known the side effects I never would have tried it. I also have noticed aging lines seems accelerated. Anyone else have the same problems after discontinuing? I have noticed scarring and it takes forever to heal. Is there any over-counter acne meds to help or do I need see a dermatologist? I am really frustrated. I am 33 years old acne should have hit me during puberty, not from a pill.

Stacey

AskDocWeb: Since your acne wasn’t a problem until after you stopped taking ortho tri-cyclen, it seems likely that the pill was preventing the problem. If you go to a dermatologist, get on a good regimen of skin care. Retin-A may be prescribed if the acne is really bad.

Subj:

I have been getting normal teenage acne for about 3 years now, and I was wondering if Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo would help clear it up. Does this pill help normalize hormones like androgen?

Kay

AskDocWeb: Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo will not help with acne. On the contrary, there have been many reports of it making acne worse. It’s the original Ortho Tri-cyclen that is documented to help with acne.

Subj: Acne every month now
Date: 8/29/2006
I have been on ortho tri cyclen for 6 years. It totally cleared my skin for the first 5 years but this past year I have been breaking out DURING WEEK 2 ONLY— like clockwork every month. Could my body have changed and needs a different pill? Have you ever heard of this and is there a better pill for me?

LBK

AskDocWeb: You might check the pills to find out if they changed you to one of the generics without your noticing. The new ones do not help with acne like the original.

Subj: Forgetting to take pill
Date: 8/31/2006
I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for awhile now, consecutively for about the past 5 months. A few times this month I have forgotten to take a pill and would just take it the next day with that day’s pill. Today I took the 2nd green pill and still have no period. I had symptoms of a normal period just no bleeding and I have also been under alot of stress. I have also had sex a couple times this month where he did not ejaculate inside of me at all. Is it possible I am pregnant?

Sara

AskDocWeb: Yes, since you missed taking your pill “a few times” it is possible. We suggest you use a home pregnancy test and then do another one in two weeks to make sure.

Subj: Ortho trycyclen, Ultram and Wellbutrin
Date: 9/1/2006
I have taken ortho trycyclen for YEARS, I stopped about 2 years ago…and my menstrual cycles have been awful! I want to go back on the pill, BUT about two years ago I had a seizure, first one, age 34. I was taking ortho and ultram and STARTED wellbutrin (I had only taken 2 wellburtin). I have been taking ultram for the past six months and have had no problems! I want to start ortho again…do you think I would be safe? Is there any link between the two causing an interaction? PLEASE HELP! I want to start ortho ASAP! Thank you for your response!

Anne

AskDocWeb: There isn’t a link between birth control and ultram or Wellbutrin. But speak with your physician about using the ultram with Wellbutrin. And read some of the feedback on Ultram, it’s scary.

Subj: Trinessa
Date: 9/1/2006
I have been taking trinessa for 1 1/2 yrs now. In May I have been experiencing panic attacks at the end of the month and only once a month. I believe that it is the Trinessa. Can I stop taking Trinessa in the middle of a pack? Will I get severe side effects?

Susan

AskDocWeb: There are no severe side effects no matter when you quit but, your period will probably start and it will be irregular for a few months as your body adjusts. Also there is a chance that you may have spotting.

Subj: Ortho Lo roller coaster
Date: 9/1/2006
I just recently started taking Ortho – Lo (7 days ago). For the last three days, I have had a headache, been exhausted and out of it, and unable to concentrate at work. Normally I run 4 miles a day and yesterday I could barely make it half a mile. I am generally a happy and energetic person, but the last two days I’ve been angry, aggressive and snapping at everyone. I have also been urinating constantly and have had a thick discharge and some spotting. I do not really want to go on a roller coaster of trying different birth control pills. Is it okay for me to just stop taking them before I finish the pack? I can’t function like this.

Gwyne

AskDocWeb: You can stop taking them at any time.

Subj: Dizziness and trouble concentrating
Date: 9/1/2006
I am on my second month of taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. I was taking the Lo but upped to regular because I was bleeding through. One week after starting Ortho Tri-Cyclen I starting getting this muscle jerking and contracting, dizziness and trouble concentrating. I have been to my regular MD and a neurologist. After several blood and other tests, they cannot find anything wrong with me. I would like to know if anyone else taking your product has had any side effects like this. I would appreciate a response. Thank you for your time.

Andrea

AskDocWeb: Sorry Andrea, we don’t have any products here. This is a consumer review website where people report on the side effects of these products. A few women have complained about dizziness while taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen but we haven’t heard anything about muscles jerking. If readers here share those symptoms maybe they will comment.

Subj: Headaches, dry skin, breaking out, and moodiness with lo
Date: 9/2/2006
I am 31 and have been off the pill for 7 years. I was on Loestrin for 3 years beforehand. I just started Ortho Tri-cyclen lo 2 weeks ago, and have been experiencing headaches, dry skin, breaking out on my chest and face, and moodiness. Will these side effects subside? Are there suggestions/comments for women over 30 who have just begun taking this pill?

J

AskDocWeb: You should tell your doctor about these side effects. He will probably tell you to wait three months to give your body time to get used to the pills. In the mean time read the posts about Ortho Tri-cyclen lo, you may not want to wait before asking for a change in birth control.

Subj: Ortho tri cyclen for acne
Date: 9/3/2006
I’ve just started taking ortho tri cyclen for my mild acne and I was wondering, how long will it take until I see improvements in my skin?

Kat

AskDocWeb: Everyone is different of course but you should start to see a change within a couple of months.

Subj: Mixed up schedule
Date: 9/5/2006
I have been on the generic version of Ortho tricyclen for over 2 years with no major problems. After starting a new pack, I thought I had missed a day of my first row of blue active pills. So, I just doubled up the next day. On week 2, I realized that I accidently took a week two pill, instead of week 1, therefore believing I had skipped one. It is now only week 3, and I have started my period, so it’s a week early. This seems awfully strange, but could it be because I took a week 2 pill during week 1, even though I doubled up on week 1? Please let me know!

Bianca

AskDocWeb: Yes, it seems liklely that it happened because you doubled up.

Subj: Weight gain and loss
Date: 9/6/2006
I have been on ortho tri-cyclen for about 3 months now and I haven’t noticed any weight gain yet but I have heard from other woman that it’s hard to loose weight even if your working out 5 times a week, so my question is do you think that I will be able to loose weight if I am consistent at working out even while on the pill?

AskDocWeb: Because there is such a wide range of responses to birth control drugs, it’s hard to say. Some women work their butts off and just can’t lose the pounds, others find a way that works for them.

Subj: Skin is horrible
Date: 9/7/2006
I have been on ortho tri cyclin low and compared to yasmin I’m not as moody. But my skin is looking horrible and I am wondering if it’s because of ortho lo. Its really disturbing and my skin looks horrible which is use to be really clear.

Dubbz

AskDocWeb: Yes, it may be due to the Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo, several women have reported an increase in acne after starting that birth control drug.

Subj: Depression and mood swings
Date: 9/7/2006
I have been taking ortho tri cyclin lo for about 3 years now…Only now have a started to wonder where my depression and mood swings are coming from. At first I thought maybe it ran in the family until a talk with my sister made me realize she was experiencing the same things. She is on regular ortho tri cyclin. I was always a happy person but lately more than ever I have been experiencing severe depression, irritability and mood swings. I usually remember to take my pill every day but it is usually at different times of the night (I try to take them at 8pm). Could taking the pill at different times each day be causing this?

Sara

AskDocWeb: No, taking the pill at a different time each day will not cause depression or mood swings. Read more feedback
