Subj: Ortho tri-cylcen lo
Date: 9/14/2006
I was on the first 3 months of ortho tri-cylcen lo, but when I had to go back for my follow up to get more, I had to go out of town for a month. I was out of pills in the middle of October and it is now the beginning of September and I still have not had a period. Instead of cramps right before I start my period, I get extremely nauseous. I’ve been this like I would be starting my period soon but still nothing. Could my nausea be due to pregnancy? I know condoms are not 100 percent effective but my boyfriend always wears one and pulls out.
Megan
AskDocWeb: Running out of pills will throw your period off but yes, you could be pregnant.
Subj: Ortho Tricyclen Lo causing broken capillaries
Date: 9/15/2006
I have been on Ortho Tricyclen Lo for over a year now. My first month taking it I spotted and then it went away. I also gained over 20 lbs, as well as having an increase in my cup size. Along with those other symptoms I also lost my sex drive almost completely as well as being dry during sex. The only good thing I think Ortho Tricyclen Lo does for me is to regulate my period, along with not getting pregnant. Because of this, I’m thinking about not taking Birth Control Pills anymore. I recently heard that Birth control Pills can cause broken capillaries and I noticed after taking Ortho Lo for a couple of months I started to get them. They appeared on my thighs, not like other women who get them on the face. Is my information right that Birth Control Pills can cause this? And is there any way to get rid of them?
Kelda
AskDocWeb: Your information is correct, there are many women who have the same problem. It depends on your condition of course but a Vein Center may be able to help.
Subj: Trinessa side effects
Date: 9/16/2006
I have just switched from Depo to Trinessa (the generic to Ortho) I have breast pain, bloating, abdominal pain, and an overall feeling of blah! I was on Depo for 5 years and just think my hormones are trying to get back into the kick of things. I have read horrible things about Trinessa, like depression, weight gain, etc. but I have not experienced this. I am having irregular bleeding though…and I am attributing this to “out of wack” hormones. In addition, my vaginal canal seems real sensitive to tampons. Great huh!

Subj: no complaints except…
Date: 9/16/2006
I’ve been taking orthotricyclen for five years I have no complaints except that I’ve been a total bitch to everyone around me especially my boyfriend is it the pill?
Christina
AskDocWeb: We call that irritability, others call it mood swings. Whatever you call it, it can be hard on those around you. And yes, it can be caused by this birth control pill.
Subj: Do prescription drugs void birth control?
Date: 9/19/2006
I have been on the pill for a while now and I just found out that prescription drugs void your birth control. First off, is that true? Second, if so, how long is it voided? Do you like need to not have sex for a complete month to know that you are safe? I am a little confused because I don’t know when it is safe. Another thing, can OTC drugs (Tylenol, Aleve, ETC.) also void your birth control. Please help
KRISTI
AskDocWeb: Some antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of your birth control for as long as you take the antibiotic, but not all antibiotics do that. This is why it is important to let your doctor know that you are taking birth control pills whenever the doctor prescribes a new medication. Over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol or Aleve do not affect your birth control.
Subj: Getting pregnant while on the pill?
Date: 9/19/2006
How effective is the pill? I have heard all kinds of horror stories about people getting pregnant while on the pill. What would cause that to happen.
Jamie
AskDocWeb: Missing a pill and being on an antibiotic are the main reasons. But yes, a small percentage of women have become pregnant while on birth control pills.
Subj: Can’t loose weight while taking ortho tri cyclin
Date: 9/19/2006
I am on ortho tri cylin to maintain my periods, cramps, and acne. I also have my tubes tied since 2001. My question is since taking the pill I can not seem to lose any more weight. I run 3-4 miles 5 days a week, lift weights for 2. Is it possible that because I have had a tubal that the pill is making matters worse for me? Are there other options?
Liz
AskDocWeb: Having your tubes tied is not the problem. Weight gains of 15-20 pounds are common with most birth control pills and typically it is difficult to lose that weight while on the birth control drugs. Many women can relate to your situation, maybe one of our readers has a suggestion to share.
Subj: Stomach hurts constantly
Date: 9/19/2006
I’ve been taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for about a month now and I’ve never taken’ any other birth control. I’ve never had bad head aches and now I do, my stomach CONSTANTLY hurts, the center of my stomach is tender, I’m nauseated all throughout the day, I don’t think this pill is for me, and I’m ALWAYS tired and my back has been sore lately…I dunno, maybe it’s just me. But it all didn’t start happening till I started taking it.
Joanna
AskDocWeb: It sounds like it may be caused by the ortho tri-cyclen lo. Your doctor would tell you to wait three months to find out if it goes away but with your symptoms you can ask him for a change now.
Subj: Pregnant on LO
Date: 9/20/2006
I started taking LO in Jan/06, I was advised and confirmed on the web page for Ortho Tri Cyclen LO to start the day after my period stopped. Everything seemed fine we waited to have unprotected sex 10 days as we were also advised. I had somewhat of a full period a few weeks later and found out on 3/9 that I was 7 weeks pregnant…So for starters I switched OB’s, I think I was given bad information and now I’m not sure if they have even calculated my due date correctly.

Subj: Pregnant on Ortho-Lo
Date: 9/20/2006
I have been on Ortho-Lo for a little over a year, other brands before that, and I found out a few weeks ago that I’m pregnant! Luckily, things are working out great for my husband and I even though this wasn’t a planned pregnancy. I liked Ortho-Lo very much until this happened, no negative side effects except of course the fact that I obviously still ovulated! On a side note, I did not miss any pills and had not taken any antibiotics when I got pregnant. I have since been on several pregnancy websites and have come across several others who got pregnant while on a low-dose pill.

Subj: Spotting
Date: 9/21/2006
I have been on Ortho Lo for six months and I have been noticing that every time 7th day when the pills change shades, I start spotting. Does this happen to anyone else? I am going to call my doc and ask him to change the script to another low dose pill. Any suggestions?

Subj: Hormonal acne
Date: 9/22/2006
I’m 31, been on oth tri cyclen for 6 years. Wonderful for my hormonal acne, excessive androgen, but started have all month break though bleeding. Switched to ortho cyclen, it fixed the bleeding but I believe I’m getting an increase in acne. Will keep trying it for a bit, but if it gets worse, what would be another brand to try for these two issues combined.
Angela
AskDocWeb: When you start with the best none of the alternatives are very attractive. You may have to use over-the-counter acne products but use them twice daily.
Subj: Breaking out
Date: 9/23/2006
I’ve been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for seven days now and I am breaking out tremendously. Is this just a coincidence or will this pill make you break out before it work?
Veronica
AskDocWeb: It will not make you break out, that’s just coincidence. It takes several weeks to have an affect on your acne.
Subj: Mood swings, breast pain and tired
Date: 9/23/2006
I’ve been on ortho tri lo for 6 months and I had mood swings breast pain and so tired I couldn’t get out of bed. I’m going to stop taking it now that I’ve been so constipated for a week its the last straw.

Subj: Trying to lose weight
Date: 9/24/2006
I have had no problems with Ortho Tri-cylen and I have been on it for 3 years now. My face cleared up and I can tell you the day and hour I will get my period. It did not make me put on weight but I’ve been struggling trying to lose weight. Does it make it harder to lose weight while on the pill?
Michelle
AskDocWeb: Yes, it does make weight loss harder.
Subj: Switched from ortho tri-cyclen low to yasmin
Date: 9/25/2006
My teenage daughter was on ortho tri-cyclen low for a year and a half, she had awful mood swings, cried for no reason, gained weight, and would start her period a week before it was time and stay on it another week also, her dr. has just put her on yasmin she has been taking it for two weeks, she is still a little moody, how long does it take to get out of your system and the other take its place.
Brenda
AskDocWeb: It will take a few weeks for the Yasmin to replace the Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo but the overall change will take about three months. That’s how long it takes for the body to become adjusted to the new drug.

Subj: Effectiveness of birth control pills
Date: 9/25/2006
Ok so here’s my question… all these doctors say that birth control pills are the most effective form of birth control or whatever, but how effective? I haven’t been able to find any kind of numbers on the stupid internet since I started this pill… also no complaints about ortho… please let me know how effective it is… like 98% or what?
NJ
AskDocWeb: We sympathize with your frustration about finding information on the effectiveness of birth control pills. It was difficult to find and for some birth control drugs, it does not appear to be available. To complicate this, many drug companies have their own unique way of publishing this information. That makes it difficult to compare their product to others. We did find enough information to put togeher the following table.
