This birth control has been a life saver for me. I use to have severe stomach cramps and leg pain that keep me bed ridden. I use to pass out because my flow was so heavy but now I have a light period for three days. I gained alot of weight but it helped me. Thank you! God bless,
Leslie
Subj: Stopping the pills
Date: 1/11/2007
I’m 8 days away from the end of my pack, if I stop the pills early, will I get me period?
Clare
AskDocWeb: Yes you will and it may be irregular for awhile.
Subj: Irregular period
Date: 1/11/2007
I’ve been taking Ortho-tri-cylin lo for four months and have been perfectly regular. This month I started my period on Friday the fifth, and am still today (Wednesday, the tenth) on my period, but I’m not set to start taking my placebo pills until this coming Sunday (the 14th). I’ve been taking the pills as usual throughout this time. I did have a cold last week, could that be why? Should I continue to finish my pack, and restart another, and should I expect to start my period again when I start taking the placebo pills?
Anne
AskDocWeb: Yes, your cold could have thrown off your period. If you continue to finish your pack, you will get another period when you go on the placebo.

Lisa
AskDocWeb: The patient insert says to use a back-up method until you check with your health care professional.
Subj: Under weight and low estrogen contraception
Date: 1/13/2007
I’ve been on tri-cyclen low for about 5 1/2 months now and I’ve been reading about birth control side effects . My skin was never really bad anyway but I have more colour than normal, but my breasts did get bigger! I read somewhere that girls under the weight of 155 won’t be very protected from low estrogen contraception, is this true? Also, when I forget a pill and remember the next day, do I double up? Thanks!
Drea
AskDocWeb: Girls under the weight of 155 are, if anything, more protected because their serum levels are higher. The manufacturer says to double up the next day after forgetting one, but if you miss another day in the same pack to use a backup form of birth control until after your period.
Subj: Vaginal bleeding during sex
Date: 1/14/2007
Hi I’ve been on tri-nessa for about 3 weeks, since I’ve been on this birth control I have vaginal bleeding during sex is this normal? I’ve been on other birth controls and never had this problem…I’m very scared if anyone has any information please write back… Thank you,
Angela
AskDocWeb: No this isn’t normal, please consult with your physician about changing.
Subj: Tricyclen lo
Date: 1/15/2007
I have been on Tricyclen lo for 6 months now. Love the effects of light periods but my acne is very bad…also, is it normal that one of my breasts is very sore underneath versus the other one not as much? When does the pill take effect as a birth control method?
TG
AskDocWeb: The patient information says to use a backup method of birth control for the first seven days. Some breast tenderness is common but if it is very sore then you need to let your doctor know about it.
Subj: Trinessa
Date: 1/16/2007
I was on Ortho Tri Cylcen back in the 90’s and it was great! My skin never looked better and I never had break through bleeding or anything. This year after dealing with the Depo shot (bled for 3 months) and the Karriva pill (bled for 9 days each month and spotted during sex) I asked to be put back on Ortho Tri Cylen. But they gave me Trinessa. I have been on it for 2 1/2 months. The first month I had my period for 7 days and a bit of break through bleeding. This month has been great. But I’m on my 3rd green pill and still haven’t started my period. Is this normal? I didn’t skip any pills. Is it possible that periods on Trinessa are just shorter? Also, I have been getting a few pimples.
Nikki
AskDocWeb: Your first period lasted longer because your body was adjusting to the new birth control pills. There are many things that can throw off your period besides changing pills; antibiotics, illness or just stress. Several women have reported that the generic Trinessa does not help with acne as well as the name brand. If you have break through bleeding then consult with your physician.
Subj: Polyps
Date: 1/16/2007
I am 21 and have been on Ortho-lo for a year, I have had two polyps in the last year. Polyps are very painful and just a pain in the neck. My mother has had polyps, and it now seems that I am doomed to it as well, but my mother (being the crazy retired-nurse that she is) believes that the pill has everything to do with these polyps. I am dying to get to the bottom of this…any advice…or anything anyone could possible recommend! I will try anything, they are very painful! I have heard that Vitamin A and Alpha-Carotene may help with this problem. I also know that polyps are often times the abnormal response to increased estrogen levels…so with that said what’s next? I need a pill with even lower estrogen levels than this pill. I just need some help!
Ashley
AskDocWeb: Most small polyps don’t cause symptoms and are not dangerous. Often, people don’t know they have one until the doctor finds it during a regular checkup or while testing them for something else. The good news is that most are benign, which means they are not cancerous. But over time, some types of polyps can turn into cancer. Usually the polyps that are smaller than a pea aren’t harmful but larger polyps could someday become cancer or may already be cancer. To be safe, doctors remove all polyps and test them. Doctors don’t know of any one sure way to prevent polyps but you might be able to lower your risk of getting them if you
- Eat more fruits and vegetables and less fatty food
- Don’t smoke
- Avoid alcohol
- Exercise every day
- Lose weight if you’re overweight
- Eat more food that contains calcium (milk, cheese, and broccoli)
- Eat more food that contains folate (chickpeas, kidney beans, and spinach).
- Some doctors think that aspirin might help prevent polyps. Studies are under way.
Once you’ve had polyps, the doctor may want you to get tested regularly in the future. Symptoms may include constipation or diarrhea for more than a week or blood on your underwear, on toilet paper, or in your stool.
Subj: Ortho Tri Cyclen lo
Date: 1/16/2007
Recently I have been of the Ortho Tri Cyclen lo for about 3 months, I just started taking it again last Sunday. How quickly will it go into effect without causing any pregnancy?
Michelle
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says 7 days but to be as safe as possible use another method of birth control for the first three weeks.
Subj: Considering stopping because of side effects
Date: 1/17/2007
hello, I’ve been on the BC empresse for about 2 years now and I have been having severe depression and for the past 4 weeks been feeling really sick, my periods have been irregular. I feel dizzy all the time, vomiting, having blurred vision, swelling, migraines, severe joint pain and embarrassing facial hair. I’ve been considering stopping. I’m not sexually active, I’m just taking them to regulate my monthly cycle. Should I finish the pack or stop now? A reply would be great, cause I’m having a hard time making up my mind, thank you 🙂
FS
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you have plenty of reasons to stop now. Please consider seeing your primary physician and putting a stop to all these horrors, and don’t wait to get off these pills.
Subj: No generic for Lo
Date: 1/17/2007
Regarding a question asked here in November 2006 about a generic for Ortho Tricylen Lo (the answer was Trinessa), I called my pharmacist today (1/17/07) and she said there is NO generic for Lo. Trinessa is just for regular Ortho Tricyclen. Supposedly the patent for Lo is not running out for a few years. If you have different info, I would love it because my insurance isn’t covering the cost and I’m now paying $50 a month for the pills! I’ve been looking into online pharmacies that sell it at a cheaper rate, but my husband thinks they are shading. Sorry if any of this is a repeat – I am new to the site. Thanks.
Nika
AskDocWeb: That’s right there isn’t a generic for the ‘Lo’. We agree with your husband about buying from online pharmacies but not just because they may be shady. Several states have made the online purchase of any prescription drugs illegal. Please check with the Attorney general in your state to be sure. Read more feedback
