Subj: Green pills?
Date: 2/1/2007
I have been on ortho-tri cyclen for about 2 weeks and I have been ok no side affects I love it. But when my menstrual cycle starts I know to take the green pills but my periods usually last 3-4 days and there are 7 green or inactive pills when my period is over do I still finish the green pills or do I start a new pack?
Amanda
AskDocWeb: The extra pills are there to help you maintain the habit of taking a pill at the same time each day so yes, you are suppose to finish the pack.
Subj: Hate Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo
Date: 2/2/2007
I’m starting to hate Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo… I have been spotting for 3 weeks… 3 WEEKS! And I’m almost done with my 3rd pack. The first pack, I bled heavily and had horrible cramps for a week and the second month I spotted a for a little under a week… I’m supposed to go for a 3rd month check up soon but I’m still spotting and bleeding! I just don’t know what to do = I have noticed clearer skin for me and no weight gain and it has definitely helped prevent pregnancy, other than that the spotting and bleeding is really starting to get to me…
Cara
AskDocWeb: You should not be suffering with breakthrough bleeding. Please consult your physician now.
Subj: Suffering major migraines
Date: 2/4/2007
I’ve been on tri-cyclen for exactly one year now. Alot of damage has come from this, and now I don’t know what to do because I can’t just stop taking it knowing that I am in a serious relationship until I find something else that will protect me. I am suffering from major migraines, and I never knew why. Then I have been given anti-depression pills for the headaches, and now because of those pills I am actually suffering from depression and anxiety. I can’t stand this anymore, and besides all this that I am going through my mood shifts are unbelievable. I am fine one minute the next I go insane, and I’m afraid my BF will breakup with me in the end thinking this is how I am…but I’m not, its not me. It all started from this pill and I can’t control it. It’s tearing up my life and the one thing I love the most. Definitely don’t recommend unless you are ready to put up with so many tears and everything else I have described.

Subj: Sore nipples with Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 2/5/2007
Hi~ I have a question. I used Orthro Tri-Cyclen for 10 years. Planned parenthood only have Tri-Cyclen Lo, so I’ve started that and I’m now two weeks in. However, my nipples are so sensitive and sore (it’s almost unbearable), is this normal? I never had problems with my nipples before. Should I be worried? Thanks~
DawnMarie
AskDocWeb: No, this isn’t normal, you need to go back and consult with them again.
Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 2/5/2007
I have been using Ortho Tiri-Lo for a year. My boyfriend and I have had sex using condoms since we started about 6 months ago. Just recently I took a pregnancy test and it came back indecisive. Could I be pregnant at all?
Kacey
AskDocWeb: There have been cases of pregnancy with Ortho-Lo, and condoms do break. Have a blood test done at your doctor’s office or repeat the test in one week at home.
Subj: Brownish discharge
Date: 2/5/2007
I have been on Ortho Low for about a year now and I’m experiencing brownish discharge still. I get it about a week before my period and it continues until I get my period which makes it feel like I’ve been on it for two weeks. Also, sometimes, I will bleed during intercourse even though my period’s not due for days sometimes a whole week. Is this normal or should I be switching to regular Ortho?
KR
AskDocWeb: A change in cervical secretion is a side affect of Ortho-Lo but you might ask your doctor about switching, and have a pelvic exam to make sure everything is okay.
Subj: Generic
Date: 2/5/2007
I will be starting the generic version of ortho-tri-cyclen (Tri-sprintec). Is this pill just as effective as the original?
Andrea
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is.
Subj: Depression and numbness
Date: 2/5/2007
I took Ortho Tri-Cyclen several years ago, but switched pills after about six months because of a series of side effects that my doctor told me were probably not connected to the pill. Namely, I was an emotional wreck and my arms went numb. I’d never experience arm numbness or depression before, and when I switched pills both symptoms ceased. Recently, my new doctor switched me to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, and I’m having similar problems. The numbness in my arms is a lot worse and I’ve been experiencing moderate anxiety, including pretty awful insomnia, for about a month now. I’ve been taking the pills for three months. Between these two stints on Ortho Tri-Cyclen, I was on Ortho Novum 7/7/7 for two years and LeveLite 28 for one, and I didn’t experience these particular side effects with either of those pills. What causes the numbness, and could the anxiety be related to the pills?
Kara
AskDocWeb: Others have reported mental depression with the use of Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo. Numbness in an arm or leg is a warning sign of a possible stroke. Please report this to your doctor.
Subj: When is period supposed to stop?
Date: 2/6/2007
A few weeks ago, I started taking Ortho Tri Lo… When is my period is supposed to stop? It’s light but still there. Uggh.
Cecile
AskDocWeb: Breakthrough bleeding is a side effect of Ortho-Lo, better consult with your physician. Though he may tell you to wait because your body is just getting accustomed to the new pill.
Subj: Problems with Ortho-tricyclin Lo
Date: 2/6/2007
I’m not sure if anyone else experiences this – but I have been using Ortho-tricyclin Lo for 4-6 months and I’ve had some issues with dark, almost clotting before my period and even with my period. I was on the regular Ortho Trycyclin (original formula) before this and never experienced these problems. I’ve also started getting yeast infections and discomfort, as well as weight gain (I thought it would help me lose the weight). Is this normal? Should I switch back to the original Ortho?
Melissa
AskDocWeb: Please consult with your physician, these symptoms should not be happening.
Subj: Green pills
Date: 2/7/2007
I am taking ortho tri cycln and I was wondering if I can still have intercourse while taking the green portion of the pills. Thank you,
Abi
AskDocWeb: Yes you can.
Subj: What am I taking?
Date: 2/8/2007
I am so confused. I am taking ortho tri-cyclen Trinessa. I keep seeing people talk about OTC and trinessa as two different things. What am I taking? And since I have been on the birth control, which has been about 10 months I cry so much. I feel so depressed about everything plus I get so angry so easy. Before I never use to PMS but I have mood swings like crazy. Should I switch?
Rachel
AskDocWeb: Unfortunetly many people casually refer to their birth control pill by shortening the name. For example, the term “Ortho” has been used to identify Orthocept, Ortho Cyclen, Ortho Tri-cyclen, Ortho TriCyclen Lo, and Ortho Novum. It’s a good idea to remember that people don’t always use exact language when posting.
Now about your side effects, when your mood swings between depression and anger that is not just hard on you, it is hard on everyone around you. Please consult with your physician about switching.
Subj: Boobs getting really big
Date: 2/10/2007
I have been taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for a month now and my boobs are getting really big. Is this normal? Do they stay this big? They’re not that tender and my acne has actually really cleared. Is this just my bodies first reaction or will it get used to it and my boobs shrink and my acne come back?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: If it helps with your acne it is likely to continue to do so. Your body does go through some changes getting used to the new pill and your new breast size is one of them. It may or may not go back or normal after awhile. It seems that side effect is inconsistent and not everyone has the same results.
Subj: No trace of a period
Date: 2/11/2007
I have been on T-lo for about 4 or 5 months now… last month I had some spotting in my third week and then had my period in my 4th week. This month I have had no spotting and today is the first day of my placebo pills and I have no trace of a period? Is it possible that I am pregnant and would a pregnancy test be accurate at this point?
No period
AskDocWeb: Yes, do a pregnancy test, that’s the first thing that should be ruled out.
Subj: Am I late?
Date: 2/12/2007
I have been on Ortho Tri-cyclen. I am usually very good about taking my pills on time. I missed 2 this month and took them the next morning. I am curios on how my menstrual cycle should work. I finished my last period on January 9th and now it is February 11th. Would you consider that late?
Jackie
AskDocWeb: Yes, if you have always been on time, that would be considered late.
Subj: Which pills are better?
Date: 2/13/2007
I need a new method of birth control because I was on my other one for some odd years now. My periods are now lengthier and more painful. I just do not know which pills are the better…so could you give me some leeway???
S.C
AskDocWeb: The original Ortho Tri-cyclen (not the generic) seems to produce the least amount of problems but you need to consult with your physician because he knows your health history and the level of estrogen that you need. Read more feedback
