Subj: No complaints
Date: 2/28/2007
I’ve been taking ortho-tri cyclen lo for about a year now. I have no complaints right now, only the usual mood swings and edginess at the beginning but now all is well. My skin is fine. Didn’t really notice a difference or anything. My pharmacist said it’s the best because of its low levels of hormones, so it won’t mess with your body too much. I would advise not to take this drug if you smoke and be careful with antibiotics. they adverse the pill. All in all, I love it

Subj: Missed a pill
Date: 2/28/2007
I have been taking Ortho tri-cycin ever since I was 17 (21 now). I missed a pill over a year ago, and had a miscarriage. I had to stop taking it for 6 weeks and then started up again. After being on it for a month or two I wound up getting pregnant again. I have had my child, and started Ortho again thinking the chances of it happening again were slim. After taking Ortho regularly for 9 months, I found out I was pregnant again, possibly due to missing a pill again. I had to abort due to medical reasons (tubal), and the doctor’s switched me to ortho lo. I have been taking it for 3 months now, and I noticed abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, but more regular periods. The one piece of advice I have is, Do Not Miss a Pill! It is very important to stay on it. I take my pills religiously now, and everyone should definitely do the same. Thanks for sharing.

Subj: Breakthrough bleeding
Date: 2/28/2007
I just started taking Ortho Tri-cyclen lo, and am halfway through my third week of active pills. I have been having breakthrough bleeding for the past week (7 days) and it shows no signs of decreasing or stopping. Should I be concerned?

Natalie

AskDocWeb: Usually this isn’t a concern but do report it to your doctor.

Subj: Period and wedding
Date: 3/2/2007
I just started a new package of Tri-Nessa (my last white pill will be Saturday) and I just realized that I’m scheduled to start my period 2 days before my wedding! Is there anything I can do to stop my period for the week of my wedding?

Nica

AskDocWeb: Oh wow, what a mess. You could forget taking the placebo pills and go into your next pack but that could cause cramping and possibly spotting, it’s really not recommended.

Subj: Missed a pill
Date: 3/3/2007
I have been taking Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo for about 9 months and a couple weeks ago I missed a pill and took it the next day with the other one and now I’ve started spotting, its almost like I’m starting my period and I have 1 pill left in the pack to take. Can I start my period with pills still left in the pack?

Megan

AskDocWeb: Yes, since you forgot a pill your body is just a little confused.

Subj: L-carnitine
Date: 3/4/2007
Does L-carnitine lessen the effect of Ortho-Lo? Thanks!

Jess

AskDocWeb: Although 3 grams of L-carnitine a day for 4 months can increase sperm motility, we found no evidence to show that it reduced the effectiveness of Ortho TriCyclen Lo.

L-carnitine (levocarnitine) is produced by our bodies from the amino acids lysine and methionine in the liver and kidneys. It helps in the consumption and disposal of fat in the body turning it into energy. It’s often referred to as a fat burner.

Reproductive studies of L-carnitine have been performed in rats and rabbits at doses up to 3.8 times the human doses and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus. There are, however, no adequate studies in pregnant women. Supplemental L-carnitine should be used by pregnant women only when under medical supervision. It is not known whether L-carnitine is excreted in human milk and the supplement is not advised for nursing mothers.

Subj: PCOS
Date: 3/5/2007
Hi. I was recently put on Ortho Tri Cyclen because I haven’t had a regular period. They come like once a year, or at least use to, for the past two years-nothing. They said it seems I have PCOS. I was wondering, since birth control pills make you ovulate, if I stop after the first pack, is it possible that I could get pregnant? Since I don’t know if I ovulate or not. But they told me the pills would make me? Also if I stop taking the pill after my periods regulate from being on them, would it go back to once a year? Thanks

Raven

AskDocWeb: Yes you could become pregnant after stopping the pills and it is possible that if you stop taking them your periods may return to only once a year as before.

Subj: Birth control for Acne?
Date: 3/5/2007
I have been taking Yax or Zax bcp for 2 months to help with my acne. It has not improved and I feel bloated and crave sweets. I have gained a few pounds and spoke with my doctor and she switched me to ortho-novum 777 today. Will this help with acne or should I just stop taking the pill. I do not need to be on the pill for any other reason than the acne.

Stacey

AskDocWeb: The Ortho Novum has been helping many with acne, but you will gain weight. Since you don’t need to be on the pill in the first place, using birth control pills to deal with acne seems a bit excessive. Please take a look at Retin-A.

Subj: Spotting
Date: 3/6/2007
Hello, I’m 18 years old and have been taking ortho try-cyclen for about a year and a half, and regularly begin my period on the third or fourth day of taking my green placebo pills. However, I began spotting a dark-brownish red color 3 days ago (on my last day of light blues last week) and it has continued to get redder and heavier and look more and more like an menstruation even though I am only three days into my last week of blue active hormone pills. At this rate, I may be bleeding for over two weeks. I just wanted to ask, is a early/prolonged period like this natural? Should I talk to my gyno about changing my prescription?

Jamie

AskDocWeb: Since you have been on this pill for so long, your body shouldn’t be having a discharge like that. If you haven’t missed any pills (which can cause spotting), consult with your physician for a pelvic exam.

Subj: Second hand smoke?
Date: 3/6/2007
Hello, I went to the doctor’s office yesterday to ask for a birth control. This will be my first time ever on birth control. He prescribed Ortho-lo and after reading all the comments, I’m a little discouraged. I am using birth control for irregular periods, minor acne and maybe an extra cup size? I am anxious to get started, but also a little nervous. I do have friends who smoke in their houses. Can this be a serious risk for me?

J.M

AskDocWeb: That depends on who you ask. The USA seems to be going through an anti-smoking hysteria much like the prohibition on alcohol in the 1920’s. That aside, your body needs small amounts of toxins in order to build up a resistance to the affect of those toxins. If you are not exposed to small amounts of toxins then you may find yourself developing allergies to many things.

Subj: Two week period
Date: 3/6/2007
I have been using the Tri-Nessa for over four years. I’ve tried other methods and I’m an emotional wreck on the other ones so Tri-Nessa has worked very well for my body chemistry. I’ve been on the pill whether I am sexually active or not, I consistently take my pill. Last month however I lost my pack and didn’t take my pill for about six days. When I did find it, I decided not to double up and just get my next month’s prescription. Now my period has been going on for almost two weeks, it’s not heavy, it is light but I’m not seeing any sign of it stopping. I don’t feel pain and I’m getting other symptoms that I get when I get my period like break outs on the cheek or forehead and the discharge that I always get right before my period starts. So it seems like a normal period just extended. WTF? What did I do by not taking those last six pills and jumping into the next month’s supply?

Leia

AskDocWeb: You upset the timing of your cycle. It will take awhile to get adjusted but it should stop very soon. If you continue to have a problem, please see your OB/GYN.

Subj: How long for protection?
Date: 3/7/2007
How long do you have to take ortho tri-cylen before it is effective? I have been on it for 3 days and just had unprotected sex….

Jasmine

AskDocWeb: Oh, Oh, you could already be pregnant. We suggest you do a pregnancy test in one week.

Subj: Mood swings have been crazy
Date: 3/8/2007
I have been on ortho-lo for almost 4 months and I have had tender breasts for 3 weeks out of the 4, every month. My mood swings have been crazy and that is not like me at all. I didn’t want to believe my boyfriend when he said that it was this pill, but after reading this he was so right!

Kerri

Subj: What’s going on with my body?
Date: 3/9/2007
I’ve been off Ortho tri-cyclen lo for about month. I was suppose to get my period and it’s been five days passes that. My belly always feels and looks bloated. I’ve had cramps a few times almost every day. I feel more constipated. This all started on the day I was suppose to get my period. I took a home pregnancy test, but that came out negative. What’s going on with my body?

Deanna

AskDocWeb: Your body is adjusting to the change in hormone levels and your period could be off for awhile but it should balance itself soon (about 3 months or less). You may want to repeat another pregnancy test in one week to be sure. Read more feedback
