Subj: Nauseated, dizzy, break out in a sweat
Date: 5/24/2007
Hello! I just started ortho tri-cyclen yesterday and I noticed within about 30 minutes of taking it I started feeling nauseated, dizzy, and break out in a sweat. Is this normal would the Depo shot be a better alternative?
Adria
AskDocWeb: No the Depo shot isn’t always a better alternative. Patients are often told to wait until they’re through the entire pack to see if the side effects resolve. If the side effects don’t go away then consult with your physician about changing.
Subj: Symptoms of menopause
Date: 5/30/2007
I have been experiencing the symptoms of menopause for the past 17 years accompanied by chronic insomnia for about the same period of time. Last June my doctor prescribed Effexor 37.5 mg. (to treat hot flashes/sweats) and Ambien CR 12.5 mg. (to treat chronic insomnia). Effexor had to be discontinued after 4 mos. because of bruising and severe joint pain. I have continued using the Ambien CR, which gives me about 4-5 hours sleep/night. I still bruise easily and experience joint pain, mainly in my hands and fingers, which has decreased but is still present. Since the end of March I have been experiencing a burning sensation from head to toe and numbness in my feet and legs. My doctor prescribed Lyrica (150 mg./day) for treatment of neuropathy which helps somewhat. Blood tests are normal and have ruled out diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. I have lately read that some forms of neuropathy, though not exactly common, can derive from usage of both Effexor and Ambien CR. I seem to have been experiencing a steady rise in discomfort since discontinuing Effexor but only lately has it become debilitating. Can my condition be affected by my continued use of Ambien CR?
J. M.
AskDocWeb: To answer that we would need to know the cause of your condition. We suggest you see a neurologist for a complete work up.
Subj: Irregular period
Date: 5/30/2007
My period is not regular. I’ve been on Orth-tri for about 2 months now. I took them about a year before but got off when my BF and I broke up. Now I’ve started taking them again. My period is late and I’ve taken a preg test twice. My BF has never ejaculated inside of me. Both times test was negative. I have heard of some pills causing the body to be irregular. I’ve never experienced irregularity but then again I did just recently restart on them. Is it normal to be late when on this pill.
Tierra
AskDocWeb: It can take up to three months to becomes regular with this new birth control pill in your system.
Subj: Tri-Sprintec
Date: 5/30/2007
I’ve been on Tri-Sprintec for about 5 months now and I love it. The first week was a little rough…it was my first time taking any kind of BC and I experienced some nausea and headaches. But that’s all! Since then things have been fine, and I can say for sure that it works. It didn’t change my acne, though. Oh well. No weight change, either, which is nice. No moods changes either. It hasn’t really changed my periods though. No spotting, and it still comes for 7 days every 28 days, as usual. It didn’t shorten it or make it lighter. But that’s okay, too. I’m much more concerned with having a pill that will make me not get pregnant – and that’s what this pill does. If you’re looking for an acne-cure or a period-shortener, maybe look elsewhere, though.

Subj: Paranoid?
Date: 5/30/2007
I’ve been one Tri-Cyclen since I was 18 (I’m now 24) my boyfriend and I have been together for 6 months and we’ve had sex a number of times without a condom, now just recently he’s became paranoid about sex and how well my b/c pills are effective. I’ve been on it now for 6 years, does he need to be paranoid?
~A~
AskDocWeb: Not with Tri-cyclen he doesn’t. If he’s so paranoid tell him to wear two condoms. Some people do that because they think one might break.
Subj: Breaking out or weight gain?
Date: 5/31/2007
I have recently started taking ortho-lo. Reading these comments, it seems many are unhappy with the lo version of tricyclen. Also, many women who take lo, say they are breaking out. This however, is not listed as a side effect(unless I missed it). My doctor informed me upon prescribing the pill to me, that I would not have to worry about breaking out, or gaining weight with this pill. I am now starting to become skeptical about that. Should I?
Kaylee
AskDocWeb: It’s not that women are breaking out because of Ortho-Lo, the complaint is that the acne they did have when starting the pill did not improve. The question of weight gain is still out there.
Subj: Asenlix
Date: 6/2/2007
I’ve been taking asenlix for about 2 months now and I just realize that I am about 3 months pregnant? Is my baby in danger? Please respond, I am very scared.
Liz
AskDocWeb: You need to consult with your OB doctor, because this drug is no longer on the market here in the USA.
Subj: Is this normal?
Date: 6/2/2007
I recently got off of Tri-Sprintec 2 weeks ago after being on it for approx. 9 years. I have been experiencing abdominal pressure and was wondering if this is normal. It is not painful but the feeling that I need to go to the bathroom more than normal. Is this a normal symptom after going off of the pill? Any ideas of what this might be?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: You might want to get a urine sample tested to see if you have a urinary tract infection, that’s what it sounds like.
Subj: Continual brown discharge
Date: 6/4/2007
Just started using Ortho Tri-Cyclen for the summer (after a five month hiatus). Been having weird continual brown discharge 🙁 Like the last day or so of a period. Never had this side affect before. But it’s enough to make sex totally impossible now. Went to the Gyno. six months ago and all my labs came out clean, so I don’t think it could be something more sinister. Anyway, I was thinking about skipping the placebo pills and going straight to the white “active” pills again. I’m also debating just going back to condoms 🙁 Anyone else have this side affect?

Subj: Horrible symptoms on ortho lo
Date: 6/5/2007
I was on ortho lo about 3 years ago with horrible symptoms the whole year I took it so I stopped and I just started again 3 days ago to see if things had changed, and they have definitely not. I have horrible headaches that make me feel dizzy as well, blurred vision, extreme nausea. I also don’t feel like myself. It’s weird. I am contemplating stopping the pill and maybe trying Nuva ring.

Subj: Spotting
Date: 6/5/2007
I have been taking my birth control for about 5 years. I have been on the some one the whole time and about 3 years ago I started taking it like the seasonel. I recently went to the doc for my yearly check up (about a month ago) and I have been spotting, like a regular cycle, about 2-1/2 weeks out of the four. I am not sure of what to do or what is going on. What do I do, call the doc and get them to switch my meds or just continue on the one that I am on and just stick it out.
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you’re having break through bleeding. You might talk with your doctor about changing birth control pills because you don’t have to put up with it, there are other pills available.
Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 6/5/2007
Hello, I had a few questions; I started taking ortho tri cyclin lo on Sunday May 27, 2007 and the next Sunday I had unprotected sex once before I took my seventh pill. Is there a chance I could be pregnant? Also during the week I took my pill at 1030 p.m. but one night I took it at 11:30 or 11:45 PM does it matter if I take it am hour or so late? Last night I didn’t take it until 12:15 AM because I didn’t get home till then? Is this ok or could I be pregnant?
Dana
AskDocWeb: Yes, there is a chance you could be pregnant. Do two home pregnancy tests two weeks apart to make sure you are or are not pregnant. Remembering to take your pill is easier if you take it at the same time every day but taking it a few hours before or after your regular time doesn’t matter.
Subj: Stressed out
Date: 6/7/2007
I took the pill for years, then I stopped for a little while. I’ve been back on the pill for six months now. Question: I missed the one day of the white pill. Then a couple of days later, I forgot to take my pill on time. So I took it two hours later. The next day, the same thing, I took it two hours later. I’ve been so stressed out about me getting pregnant. I’ve been now taking them at the same time. But my breasts are so sour. They hurt when I put my bra on. So can I be pregnant? Are the pills still ok to take? I have two weeks to see if I get my period, but I’m so impatient! I need to know if there was that big possibility of getting pregnant! I need to know!
Mediele
AskDocWeb: By your symptoms, it sounds like you could but I haven’t heard of anyone who became pregnant because they were only two hours late taking their pill. When in doubt, do a home pregnancy test and then do another one a week later to make sure.
Subj: Absolutely hate it!
Date: 6/8/2007
I’ve only been taking Ortho TriCyclen Lo for about 2 1/2 weeks and I absolutely hate it! I’m moody, feeling depressed, on edge, and my sex drive has gone WAY down which is not like me at all. I hate not feeling like myself and just the thought of something altering my moods and hormone levels tells me this is not the right birth control for me. NOT recommended!

Subj: Paranoid or is something wrong?
Date: 6/9/2007
I’m 18 years old and a student athlete. For the past 2 months I have not been able to work out due to an injury. 2 days ago I started ortho tri-cyclen and I don’t know if it’s because I’m paranoid or something is really wrong but my left calf just doesn’t feel right. There’s a pain right in the middle of it and I’m nervous it could be a blood clot. I might be just freaking myself out due to all these horror stories. I eat really healthy and don’t smoke or drink. Is this just my mind playing tricks on me?
Erin
AskDocWeb: See your physician, you can have a test done to check for DVT (Deep Vein thrombosis). Read more feedback
