Subj: Am I at risk?
Date: 6/22/2007
I’m 16 and my boyfriend and I had sex our first time…it was on my period…like the very beg. I didn’t realize it was time. MY time is very off and right after my time I started taking ortho tri-cyclen lo. Am I at risk at all of carrying a baby?

Sam

AskDocWeb: Yes, you are at risk. In order for the pills to be effective, you have to take them every day for seven consecutive days BEFORE having sex.

Subj: Camila
Date: 6/24/2007
I’m taking Camila, and I wanted to know how am I going to have my period if there are no placebo pills?

Liz

AskDocWeb: With Camila there no “reminder” tablets. Camila is not as effective as estrogen/progestin birth control because it does not consistently prevent ovulation. If you vomit within 4 hours after taking this medication or have diarrhea, use a back-up method of birth control (condoms or spermicide) every time you have sex for the next 2 days. Unlike estrogen/progestin birth control pills, if you miss taking a Camila pill or take it more than 3 hours later than usual, the directions say to use a backup method of birth control (e.g., condom, spermicide) every time you have sex for the next 2 days.

Subj: Best birth control
Date: 6/28/2007
What is the best brith control? I am 34. I need something that is easy to remember to take.

Sheila.

AskDocWeb: That is different from one person to the next. For some it’s the Nuva ring, for others a patch or a pill. You’ll have to decide for yourself.

Subj: Question
Date: 6/29/2007
I was suppose to start my new pack tricylen lo on the Sunday after my period, but I didn’t. I needed to start them ASAP due to the fact that my Boyfriend that I hadn’t seen in months was coming home from Kuwait. So as soon as I went to go get the pack I started them 2 weeks into my menstrual cycle. What does this mean? Does it mean that I will still get my period the same day I was suppose to or will this delay my period for the two weeks I forgot to take them?

Jess

AskDocWeb: I hope you realize that when first start them you are suppose to use a backup form of birth control for the first seven days (minimum). Starting them two weeks into your menstrual cycle will likely maximize the disruption of the timing of your period, possibly for the next 2-3 months. Please discuss this with your doctor to make sure you understand the directions.

Subj: Switched from ortho tri-cyclen to ortho-lo
Date: 6/30/2007
I’m a 33 year old woman who first started the pill about a year and a half ago. My doc put me on ortho tri-cyclen. A few months after I met my soon to be husband and occasionally after sex I would experience some bleeding and pains such as contractions immediately after sex. It was typically on my second week of pills. The pain I experienced was extremely bad where I was balled up on the bed for a good 10 minutes or better until it finally subsided. I talked to my doc twice and finally he came to his conclusion it was his hormones mixing with mine. At the same time I was gaining weight in which I always maintained my weight and experiencing a sickness in my stomach thru out the month. Finally my doc has switched me to ortho lo 3 months ago saying he felt that I was getting too much estrogen from ortho tri-cyclen. This is my third month on and will be staring my forth pack tomorrow. My periods used to be like clockwork on ortho-tri. My first month on lo was fine. Last month my period came 4 days early. This month I was 3 days late and I was freaking out. My children are soon to be 17 and 14 and I don’t want to start over with a baby now. I started this Wednesday and here it is Saturday my period is gone. It lasted about 2 1/2 days. Is this normal with ortho-lo? Also by me switching to ortho-lo from ortho-tri do ya think I will lose some of this 25 pounds I gained in last year and half?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Yes, this does happen but it will also take regular workouts.

Subj: Second pack of Tri-Sprintec
Date: 7/4/2007
I just finished my second pack of Tri-Sprintec on Saturday. My first month taking it I got my period on the Tuesday of my placebo week, but now it’s Wednesday and I still haven’t gotten it. Last month it was pretty long and heavy. However, yesterday I noticed a little bit of reddish-brown staining in my underwear, and I thought it was my period starting but I haven’t noticed any more blood. Could this count as my period for this month? I have taken the pills regularly and have not missed any.

Crystal

AskDocWeb: It’s hard to say because there can be a lot of variation when you first start, both in the quality and quantity of your period.

Subj: Gained 15 pounds with Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Subj: It’s ruining everything!
Date: 7/4/2007
Hi. My life hasn’t been the same in a bit…not to add that since taking tricylen birth control pill (in 3rd month now) I’ve felt completely out of character!!! Help please, its ruining everything!!! Is there any other BC pills u can recommend talking to about with my doc? Reason why I’m on it is due to an ovarian cyst(non-harmful) and to eliminate the heavy monthly bleeding… I cry uncontrollably, am upset constantly, feel tired always…feel undesirable, no sex drive…etc etc it’s ruining my personal life. I went from having sex at least 3 times a week…to now…just don’t feel like it at all!!! Help please…oh yeah…it’s given me the worst case of acne as well as scarring (never experienced b4) and I’m 31! Help please,

Nicky

AskDocWeb: Wow, I wish you had consulted with your physician about this right away so you wouldn’t have to put up with this mess. There are so many birth control pills out there, only your physician who knows your health history knows which one is best for you.

Subj: Just started taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 7/5/2007
I just started taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for almost a month now. I’m on the fourth inactive green pill and haven’t gotten my period yet. My periods before this were always every 28 days (give or take a day). My boyfriend and I had sex on day 7 but he didn’t come inside me. I’ve read the other comments on here that mentioned waiting it out. How long should I wait before I should worry and test with a pregnancy test? And what happens if I still don’t get my period by the time I start my next pack?

Jen

AskDocWeb: Your periods can be off for up to three months.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 7/6/2007
Started taking generic for OTC 2 weeks ago. Had lost 5 lbs. in the 2 previous weeks with a regular exercise program including moderate strength training, cardio (swimming, cycling, & jogging) and improvements in my nutrition. My contacts constantly bother me now, but I am most concerned with the “puffy & bloated” weight gain of 7 lbs. in the last 2 weeks of taking this. I am a newlywed, in a very healthy and happy relationship, we waited to become sexually active thru our relationship, (we are 32 and 34) and I want to stay at a healthy weight for him. I have been athletic all my life and find this VERY frustrating. SURELY, with all the medical research out there, something can be recommended to combat the weight gain aspect of this medication. My NP said the only reason for weight gain is overeating. I am looking to switch docs. Dear AskDocWeb, any suggestions about the weight gain?

Laurie

AskDocWeb: You will probably gain with almost all BC pills and it’s not from eating too much. When research produces a birth control pill that doesn’t cause weight gain, that will be big news.

Subj: My review of tri-cylcin
Date: 7/6/2007
I have been on and off of it for 4 years now, with the longest period of me taking it was 8 months. As far as skin goes, its great and improves it alot (although I don’t have problems in the first place). As far as depression goes – I haven’t noticed a change, not like alesse where I was crying ALL the time. As far as weight gain goes – it all depends on if you are conscious of it. I work out now 5 times a week so I have yet to gain any weight, but the last time I was on tri-cyclin I wasn’t exercising and I was eating everything I wanted on a whim. In eight months I gained about 20 pounds and as soon as I stopped taking the pill, I lost 10 in the first month alone (with diet and exercise) Overall, tricyclin is MUCH better than alesse as long as you maintain healthy habits!

Subj: Bad moods
Date: 7/6/2007
I have been on these birth control pills for 6 months and tri cyclen has made me the biggest bitch in the world. My boyfriend can’t stand me sometimes I get in such bad moods, I couldn’t even be happy for graduation or prom because I was having such bad mood swings and always mad. I threw those pill out and now I’m back on alesse…thank God.

Subj: Less vaginal lubricant
Date: 7/6/2007
I have been on Ortho-Tricyclen Lo for about 4 months now. I noticed that I have less vaginal lubricant during foreplay than when I wasn’t on birth control. Is this due to the pill’s alteration of your natural hormones? Also, I always use the bathroom after sex. I often notice a light pink tinge to the mucus/semen that I wipe away. I never have any spotting other than this, nor any unusual pain. Could it be from bursting capillaries during intercourse? Should I consult a doctor?

E

AskDocWeb: Yes and yes, try using a lubricant and do consult with your doctor.

Subj: Start trying to have a baby
Date: 7/6/2007
I have been on birth control for 10 years and my husband and I have made the very exciting decision to start trying to have a baby. Can I go off the pill in the middle of a cycle? Will it take me longer to get pregnant since I was on the pill for so long? Thanks,

Sarah
AskDocWeb: No it won’t take longer just because you’ve been on the pill for ten years. You can stop in the middle of the pack, it’s okay to do that if you want to get pregnant.

Subj: Muscle aches on ortho lo
Date: 7/7/2007
Since I started on ortho lo, I have had muscle aches. Really weird. My left leg, along the top of the bone, and my right arm. They checked for blood clots and found nothing. Is it normal to get muscle aches from this birth control?

Bethany

AskDocWeb: No, it isn’t normal, although it is reason enough to consult with your physician about changing pills. Read more feedback
