Subj: Unpredictable timing
Date: 7/8/2007
Hello, I have been taking ortho tricyclen lo for quite a while now, but every once in awhile I start my period when I am not on the green pills and sometimes I don’t have my period at all for the green pills. Some months my period is during an unpredictable time (blue pills) and some times they’re normal (green pill). What does this mean?

Maddy

AskDocWeb: It may mean that it’s time to change your birth control pill. You could keep a record of when your period starts for three months and then present this to your physician asking him to change your birth control pill. Not knowing whether or when your period will start is not something you have to put up with.

Subj: Quick question
Date: 7/8/2007
If I were to take two packs of tri-cyclen lo consecutively, would I be able to pull that off successfully? Or would I experience breakthrough bleeding? Other than that, I find tri-cyclen to be an excellent pill.

Rose

AskDocWeb: If you are talking about avoiding a period by doing this you could experience breakthrough bleeding and severe cramping, not recommended.

Subj: Severe anxiety and insomnia
Date: 7/8/2007
I also have had severe anxiety and insomnia after taking Ortho tri cyclen for about 4-5 months now. It was ok at first and I did not equate my nervousness and panic attacks with the pill but now it has worsened and I am going to stop taking it. It has been a week of sleepless nights

Subj: Missed 2 days
Date: 7/8/2007
I missed 2 days and just took 3 pills. The instructions say that when you forget 2 pills that you should take 2 when you remember and 2 the next day. I took 3 at once – is that ok?

curious

AskDocWeb: No, making up your own dosing schedule is not recommended. Please follow the directions, it will keep you out of trouble.

Subj: Ortho tri-cyclen lo pregnancy
Date: 7/9/2007
I have been on ortho tri-cyclen lo for 8 months now. I recently started taking Wellbutrin for severe depression (not caused by the pill), it has made me very active sexually. I went on vacation recently and was drinking alcohol and such. I started spotting very light pink and brown blood on the #12 active pill. It lasted 8 days. I didn’t take the last 3 active pills because I had a very faint positive pregnancy test, I almost don’t think it really was positive, but I didn’t want to take any chances, and I also wanted to see if I would have a withdrawal bleed. It’s been 4 days with no pills, and the spotting has stopped, with no withdrawal bleed! I’m really confused. I had really bad lower back pain when I was spotting, and that has stopped also. Is this pregnancy symptoms, or what’s going on? I have never had this happen before. I have always been really regular with these pills. I started the Wellbutrin 2 months ago and my cycle with that was normal as well. What else could be going on and why would my pills have failed? I didn’t miss ANY!

D

AskDocWeb: The “why” is not yet known but there have been pregnancies reported by some with Ortho-Lo, and they didn’t miss a pill either.

Subj: Should I be Worried?
Date: 7/9/2007
My girlfriend has been on ortho tri-cyclen lo for about 5 months and is very consistent with taking her pills, however for the last 2 weeks she was in Mexico and she began taking her pills at a different time because of the time change. Her period that month only lasted for a day or 2, yesterday I ejaculated inside of her for the first time, it was the first day of her new pack, should I be Worried?

Jon

AskDocWeb: Variations like that happen from time to time and are no cause for concern.

Subj: A lot of problems with ortho
Date: 7/9/2007
I am having alot of problems with ortho. I was on desogen and my new doctor put me on ortho, since then I have no sex drive, vaginal dryness and irritation, mood swings, and two yeast infections after one month. Now I am starting my second pack of pills and the symptoms are still the same. My doctor doesn’t want to switch my pills and says that it could take another 60 days to get used to it. I can’t take the tiredness, vaginal irritation and dryness, mood swings and yeast infections any more. I am two days off my period and have a yeast infection again. Not only am I frustrated but so is my boyfriend. Should I stop taking their pill because there is way to many side effects and it’s causing me alot of trouble?

Missy

AskDocWeb: Some women do that but it’s up to you. At least consider waiting until you’re through one more cycle to see if the symptoms go away.

Subj: Changed from althea to mercilon
Date: 7/10/2007
Hi, I had an intercourse with my husband without any protection on the first and third day of taking mercilon. I just changed my pill from althea to mercilon. Thanks!

Subj: 5 years of OTCLO
Date: 7/10/2007
I was on OTCLO for 5 years. I recently got of it for three months. As soon as I got of them I started breaking out on my jaw line bad with cyst like pimples they took about a month to disappear. One good thing is that my sex drive came back and I did loose weight but I don’t know it had to do with the pill or the colonix and toxinout cleansing I was on. I recently got back on the pill so I will stop breaking out. Should I have stayed of the pill?

Lorraine

AskDocWeb: That is a decision you need to make with your doctor’s help.

Subj: Can I skip?
Date: 7/10/2007
If I want to skip my period this month and I am already 3 days in the green pills can I still skip it by starting the new pack tomorrow?

Jessica

AskDocWeb: That isn’t recommended because of breakthrough bleeding and the severe cramping that would ruin just about anyone’s vacation.

Subj: They were out
Date: 7/11/2007
So, I am taking ortho tricyclen-lo, and last month, I called in to have it refilled, and they were out. So I had to wait until my next period, to start my new pack…how late will my next period be? And should I be nervous? How fertile are you when you’re off the pill?

Andi

AskDocWeb: Very fertile and yes, we would be concerned if you were having sex without protection. They could have called another pharmacy so that you could pick them up and start on time. And next time, if they don’t call on your behalf then you can make that call on your own – or change your pharmacy. Your period can be off for up to three months before it is back on a regular schedule again.

Subj: I don’t trust this lo-
Date: 7/11/2007
I have been on lo for 2 months, I missed one pill and doubled up the next day, well two days after that I started my period (which I just got off of the previous week) and I have been on it since, it has been a month. I’m over this my boyfriend thinks I’m lying to him to get out of sex (until I showed him, now he is freaking out, I’m heading to the doctor, I don’t trust this lo-

Subj: Diane 35 (also known as Dianette)
Date: 7/11/2007
I have been on Diane 35 for 8 years now and just recently missed about a week’s worth because I couldn’t afford a new pack. I now have a pack of Diane 35 but am unsure as to when I should start taking them again. I got my period at the regular time and plan on starting to take them again the Sunday after my period started (this Sunday). Is this right? Because I’ve been on them so long, does being off them for a week severely interrupt my regular cycle? Thanks!

Jennifer

AskDocWeb: Diane 35 is not available in the U.S. and we don’t have the product insert for it. We do know that in some countries, it is still being prescribe as an oral contraceptive and is easily available over the counter but not here. There is always a small risk of blood clots with birth control pills but with Diane-35 it’s much higher. A new study shows that the risk of blood clots is up to four times greater than with other birth control pills. This has caused it to be removed from the market as a birth control pill. A consumer alert from Canada placed the following restriction on Diane-35: “This product is not approved by Health Canada for the indication of oral contraception”. When it was first sold in Europe, Diane-35 was advertised as both a treatment for acne and as birth control pill. But after reports of health problems, the drug was restricted to be used only by women with severe acne.

Diane-35® is 0.035mg of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and 2mg of cyproterone acetate (CPA).

Subj: First Time Spotting After Five Years?
Date: 7/11/2007
I began taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen in August of 2002. I have never had any side effects. I switched to Tri-Sprintec in the summer of 2005 because the graduate school pharmacy only carried the generic. I then switched to TriNessa in the summer of 2006 because my new pharmacy carried this version of the generic. I have NEVER had ANY side effects. I am a Sunday starter, and I regularly get my period on Wednesday or Thursday and bleed normally until Sunday morning when I start my new pack. However, for no apparent reason, after five straight years on Ortho Tri-Cyclen or its generic versions, I began spotting a light brownish blood yesterday afternoon, on the day of my tenth pill of my pack. I have been sexually active regularly (sometimes as often as three times a day) for the past two and a half years. Could this be “implantation” bleeding? Could I be pregnant? I have also broken out with a few pimples and am feeling bloated and as though I’ve gained weight. My skin is usually clear, and I have not changed my diet or exercise. My stress level is no higher than normal, and I have not been ill.

Sara

AskDocWeb: You could be pregnant, it does happen in a small number of cases. You might want to do a home pregnancy test twice, one week apart to find out. Otherwise it may be time for an exam.

Subj: Severe mood swings on the patch
Date: 7/11/2007
I love try ciclen, I’m just so worried at the moment I had to move to Mexico and I can’t find them here! I used the patch but took it off within a week of usage too much hormones for me, severe mood swings only ONE WEEK! I don’t know what to do to get the pills shipped to Mexico any one has a suggestion? Thank you.

Lorena

AskDocWeb: Mexico may not allow those pills to be imported. We caution you to be very careful about importing any drug until you know for sure that it is legal in your area. Read more feedback
