Subj: Slight spotting
Date: 9/8/2007
I am on ortho lo and I’m about to start my 3rd month. I had sex without a condom but pulled out, and now 3-4 days before my period should start I have been slightly spotting. is this bad? I’m concerned and scarred?

Curious

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t missed any pills you shouldn’t be pregnant.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 9/10/2007
Is there some way that I can maintain the same weight without gaining any from taking ortho tri-cylen? Should I ask to be put on another pill that will have less of a weight gain affect?

Lizz

AskDocWeb: Yes, talk to your doctor about what might work best for you.

Subj: It’s ruining my relationships
Date: 9/12/2007
I’ve been taking Ortho Tri for almost a year and at first I thought the horrible mood swings and sadness was just the adjustment period. But I have gotten so bad with anxiety and depression that I’m not myself and it’s ruining my relationships. I recently stopped using the pill and am going to let my body relax for a while. For those of you who are feeling what I’m feeling, this obviously doesn’t work for us so either get off it or get another doctor if they don’t want to listen to what you have to say and how you feel.

Subj: Expiration date
Date: 9/12/2007
hi, I have been taking the pill for about 6 months and I have been getting it from my health center for adolescents for free. My last visit I requested about 6 or 7 refill packs because I was going away to college and I needed them to last me about 7 months. She gave me the 7 refill packs and I just looked at the pack and the expiration date says “Sept 8” but there’s no year attached to it. The doctor gave me these packs in July. Are doctors permitted to give expired refill packs or, do you think the date is “Sept 8 2008”?

Jocelyn

AskDocWeb: Most likely the expiration date is September 8, 2008, or 2009. We’ve never heard of anyone distributing expired meds.

Subj: Could I possible be pregnant?
Date: 9/12/2007
I have been taking Ortho tri-cyclen for about 7 years. I haven’t had any problems other than it causing me to be allergic to nickel. I have stopped taking it now and am feeling some breast tenderness. Are there symptoms from being off the pill, or could I possible be pregnant?

Stephanie

AskDocWeb: Yes, you could be pregnant, do a home pregnancy test. They are the same ones used at a physician’s office.

Subj: Side effects of Yasmin and JAZ
Date: 9/13/2007
I would like to find out what side effects that the birth control pill Yasmin causes from any women that have taken these products. And also the birth control pill JAZ.

Subj: Significant increase in my appetite
Date: 9/14/2007
I have been on Ortho tri- lo for 2 months now and have experienced a significant increase in my appetite…to the point where I have gained close to 15 pounds in less than 2 months, and I am ALWAYS HUNGRY! Nothing satisfies me! In addition, I work out for an hour everyday and consider myself very active and the foods I eat are healthy! What do you suggest I do? Should I go off the pill? How long will it take for me to lose the weight and readjust? Also, I was diagnosed with vulvar vestibulitis and it seems to be directly correlated with the pill…I have tried yaz, estrostep fe, ortho lo, cyclessa, loestrin…any suggestions as to some other alternatives to try? I love the freedom of being on the pill and how reliable my periods are, but I cannot stand the weight gain! Sadly though, the VV has been alright since being on ortho lo, so I am torn on what to do. Please help me!!!

Brigit

AskDocWeb: It would be wonderful to have an alternative but right now there is no other pill we can recommend. With birth control pills most women do gain weight, that’s just the way it is. Going off the pill or not may be a difficult decision but it’s up to you to make it.

Subj: When to stop taking it
Date: 9/14/2007
When is it ok to stop taking it? As in should I wait until the end of my next period or can I just stop taking the pills half way through a pack?? I’ve been on for 7 years if that makes a difference.

Christine

AskDocWeb: If you finish the pack, it will minimize the adjustment period. If you quit earlier your period will start off-cycle.

Subj: Stopping altogether
Date: 9/15/2007
I am on my first pack of ortho lo. I was haven’t been on birth control in years. It seems that people would only have a reason to check this site and put in a comment/concern if they are having problems with the birth control. But, I was wondering if there are any positive reviewers out there. It seems ridiculous to me to stay on this stuff when the feedback is so consistently poor. I struggle with anxiety/depression in general and don’t want to exacerbate it and I really don’t want to gain weight or have skin problems. Also, I have been cramping a lot and having low back pain since taking the pill. Is it bad to stop after a month or less? Would it be recommended that I finish out the first back before stopping altogether or would it not matter? Cost is also an issue as I just lost my insurance b/c I decided to take a break from school. Thanks for any input.

Anna

AskDocWeb: If you don’t mind if your period starting earlier you can quit anytime.

Subj: What’s in the pill?
Date: 9/15/2007
I have been taking Ortho Tri-cyl Lo for two months now and it seems that my hair grows faster now. I had to buy bigger bras too. Last year I was on the depo shot and after I stopped getting it my acne got very bad. Then I got 3 periods in a matter of 4 weeks. They were extremely heavy. I was miserable. So that’s when I was put on the pill. I don’t recommend anyone to get the Depo shot. My question is what is in the pill? It seems to be good for you, well for me anyway.

Cherelynn

AskDocWeb: The active ingredients in Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo tablets are a combination of the progestational compound norgestimate and the estrogenic compound ethinyl estradiol. The inactive ingredients are lactose, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol, carnauba wax, purified water and microcrystalline cellulose. (Do we really need more cellulose?)

Subj: Switching pills
Date: 9/16/2007
Hi, I am currently on ortho tri cy. lo, and I started my first pack last month which I started on a Sunday start. Can I switch to a day-1 start next month with no complications? If I am on Sunday start, but my period ends on Friday and I have to wait till Sunday to take my first pill, should I use back up contraception for those couple days?

Kimmy

AskDocWeb: Switching pills is something you should do only after consulting with your doctor but using a back up contraception is good insurance anytime you have doubts.

Subj: First late then early
Date: 9/16/2007
I have been taking Trinessa for about 9 months now and last month my period was 3 days late and this month it is 3-4 days early. Do I need to be worried? Do you think I need to switch to a different birth control pill that may be a bit stronger?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: That’s within the normal range of variations.

Subj: Ortho tri-cyclen
Date: 9/17/2007
I have a question I planned on taking my pill at 3:30 PM and one time I didn’t take it till 4 o’clock will that mess anything up? I would love to know… Thanks,

Kayla

AskDocWeb: No, it won’t mess things up.

Subj: Getting more cramps on the Pill
Date: 9/18/2007
I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for about 6 months now. I also have turned into “Satan!” I am experiencing depression on a regular basis and I am CRAZY the last week of the pack and during the sugar pill week. I finally realized that me sticking with this pill was not worth compromising my relationship, so I am switching to Yaz next month. I also experienced weird cramps the 3rd week of the pack. Has anyone else had this problem? I’ve actually been getting more cramps on the Pill than before I started.

Elizabeth

Subj: Switched to Yasmin
Date: 9/18/2007
I tried Ortho Tricyclen as well as Ortho Tricyclen Lo and experienced moodiness with both. I switched to Yasmin and have been very happy with the change!!!

Monica

Subj: I don’t like this
Date: 9/19/2007
I’m 17 years old and I’ve been taking ortho for 7 months now, and when I started taking ortho I weighed 90 lbs. and I now weigh 115lbs. I don’t like this birthcontrol at all, it’s making my boobs bigger as well. And I’m very moody. My periods are always on time and regular and as of this day my period is 3 days late which has never happened and I’m getting worried. I don’t know what to do!

Brittany

AskDocWeb: How about starting with a home pregnancy test and then repeat in one week.

Subj: Missed pills
Date: 9/20/2007
I have been taking OrthoTricyclin-lo for several years. Recently I missed 2 pills in a row and I started menstruating. The 2 pills I missed were day 6 and 7. I didn’t follow the directions correctly for missing the 2 pills. I took them as soon as I could on day 8 and then took the day 8 pill later the same day. Instead, I should have taken day 8 and 9 together later that day. I’m guessing because of this I menstruated steadily for over a week starting on day 9. I kept taking the pill that week and then stopped on day 17. Shortly after menstruation stopped as well. The plan was to stop the pill and then wait for my next period to start a new pack since I messed up my cycle with this pack. It didn’t seem like menstruation was ever going to stop until I stopped the pill. Anyway, my question is should I expect my next period to be very irregular since it’s already seems late according to the irregular one I had before? Since my last one came so early perhaps my next one will come late? Thanks

Lucia

AskDocWeb: Yes your periods may be off the next month or so.

Subj: I am really worried.
Date: 9/20/2007
I have been taking Orth Tri-Cyclen lo for about eight months now. For the past few months, I have started every Thursday during the earlier parts of the day. Is it possible I am pregnant? I take the pill every day, although sometimes not always at the same time. I am really worried. Should I be?

Angelica

AskDocWeb: The chance of you being pregnant are very small but if you’re concerned, do a home pregnancy test so you can stop worrying. Read more feedback
