Subj: Phentermine side effects
Date: 7/29/2005
I’ve taken phentermine 37.5 for over 3 years now…I wouldn’t suggest it. It’s very habit forming and can ultimately be damaging. Palpitations, depression, insomnia, all results of use of this drug…It became increasingly difficult to even fathom being without. Not only that, after a period of time, the effectiveness lessens. Before being yanked off of them cold turkey, I was being prescribed 3 daily. I normally would take up to 5 or 6. Withdrawal has been no fun at all…I suppose if you’re careful and truly just use it short term, it’s not horrible. It became a habit for me. I guess I should be thankful that I’m not able to access them anymore. It’s going to be a process though.

Subj: Serotonin levels?
Date: 8/1/2005
If Phentermine works by increasing the serotonin to your brain, is it not similar to Prozac that works the same way?
Mary
AskDocWeb: You seem to be looking at only one aspect of these two products as if that were the only thing they do and that is not the case. Both drugs do other things in addition to affecting the serotonin levels. Phentermine is a stimulant and Prozac an antidepressant. Those are related but they are not the same thing.
Subj: Phentermine constipation
Date: 8/1/2005
I have been taking phentermine for 5 months. I have chronic constipation, it takes 5 days to have a BM. I was wondering if this could be causing this. I have lost 27 pounds but now I haven’t lost any more weight in 5 weeks. what should I do? I don’t want the weight to come back. Thank-you,
Gerry
AskDocWeb: Constipation is a listed side effect, however, this is one side effect that you need to let your doctor know about.
Subj: Self prescribed Phentermine
Date: 8/3/2005
In past years I have taken lower dosages of Phentermine, with the supervision of a doctor. Two months ago I ordered a bottle of 37.5 mg over the internet and have taken them for approx. 30 days. I was wondering if a possible side effect could be memory loss. I know confusion has been listed, but lately I find myself needing to really concentrate to recall recent activities or conversations. Thank you,
Wanda
AskDocWeb: Yes, your memory problems could be caused by too high a dosage. If that is the only negative side effect you experience, count yourself lucky.
Subj: On Phentermine but still hungry
Date: 8/5/2005
I have been on phentermine for about 1 week now. I am still very hungry. I feel like I need to eat more than I did when I wasn’t on the pill. Do you have any suggestions.
Tammy
AskDocWeb: We have put together a set of tips to help you conquer cravings. Please let us know if you find them helpful.
subj: Feel sick on Phentermine
date: 8/9/2005
I have been taking phentermine for 2 weeks, not feeling too good. I am tired all the time and feel sick. I think you should read about side effects, they are bad. I don’t think its good for you if its going to affect your health.

Subj: Trying to get off Phentermine
Date: 8/9/2005
Please help, I have been taking phentermine off and on for five years about 12mg a day. I also take Paxil for anxiety and xanax at times. I am trying to go off of phentermine, how do I do it and does it cause more anxiety? I wonder if this is making my anxiety worse? Thank you,
Ann
AskDocWeb: As you know, Phentermine stimulates your central nervous system. That can increase any anxiety already present. Since you are on Paxil and an occasional Xanax, you should discuss this with your doctor.
Subj: Phentermine and Dry mouth
Date: 8/12/2005
I started taking Phentermine in January of this year. I started at 5’6″ and 188 pounds. I was pushing a size 16. I have lost 45 pounds to date (am now a size 6 or 8, depending on the clothes) – slowly, an average of 5 pounds a month, with most of my weight loss occurring since March. I ran out of my prescription (30mg 1x day) and neglected to have it refilled for about two weeks. I just refilled it this week and my doctor upped my dosage to 37.5 mg. I experienced an increase in energy and less emotional eating. I also began doing yoga and Pilates. I do experience some irritability (but that could just be because I’m a single mom of three!). :0) I also have dizziness at times and lots of insomnia, but I’ve had that for years. Dry mouth is the other side effect I’ve experienced. Overall, the benefits have outweighed the side effects for me.
Suz
AskDocWeb: Dry mouth is one of the side effects of phentermine. You need to drink plenty of water when on this med.
Subj: Armour Thyroid and Phentermine
Date: 8/12/2005
I take 90 mg Armour Thyroid, am 51 years old and weigh 210. I need to loose the weight and it is just getting harder and harder. Also I think I am going into menopause since I have not had a period in 8 months. I have very low BP and pulse. I want to go to the weight loss center here (they have an MD and said lots of women with thyroid take it.) Just want a second opinion. I don’t want a stroke or worse. THANKS!
Tina
AskDocWeb: It sounds like phentermine would work for you but, read the directions and precautions that comes with the medication.
Subj: Diet pills not working
Date: 8/13/2005
When I first started taking diet pills I started with Phentermine one pill a day I lost 18lbs. But couldn’t afford to keep buying them so I stopped when I ran out. Months go by and I buy them again, this time I buy Adipex. Lost the same amount of weight and stop taking because of the same reason couldn’t afford them. Months go buy again and I just bought them for the 3rd time(Adipex) one pill a day and they are not doing nothing I mean absolutely nothing for me. I don’t want to work out. I make myself eat healthy but I’m not loosing any weight. I think I’ve lost only 4lbs in two weeks when I know you can loose 4lbs in one week. I don’t understand what is wrong. Can you tell me?
Keyke
AskDocWeb: You may not want to hear it but it probably has something to do with not working out. It is designed to work with an exercise program. Leaving out the exercise is like making a chocolate cake and leaving out the chocolate – you are not going to get the results you want.
Subj: When to take phentermine diet pill
Date: 8/16/2005
I have a question, I was wanting to know if I could take phentermine at night? I work from 11p.m to 7a.m. Please let me know something.
Crystal
AskDocWeb: Your day starts at what for most people would be night but since these are your waking hours, and the hours you eat, yes. Your doctor should have explained that the stimulation provided by this pill would cause problems if you take it too close to the time you retire to sleep.
Subj: Phentermine

My sister and I just started taking Phentermine. We are both healthy but are worried if Phentermine can be dangerous to our health – very concerned write back.
Sherry
AskDocWeb: The side effects should be looked into before you start taking it. It’s meant for short-term use only. It has abuse potential because it can be addicting. It is dangerous because it can cause hypertension, valvular heart disease, blood pressure problems, and overstimulation of your central nervous systemc.
Subj: Phentermine

I’ve been on phentermine for 3 days now and the only side effects I’ve experienced so far are dry mouth and feeling tired. Will this go away eventually? Also, instead of taking the whole pill, I take half of it, will it still work just as good?
Casey
AskDocWeb: The side effect of dry mouth is pretty common with Phentermine. You need to drink a lot of water while on this diet pill. Taking half the amount will produce less effect. Best to follow your doctor’s recommendations.
Subj: Phentermine hair loss?
8/26/2005
I’ve been on phentermine for 7 months and have lost 40 lbs, very happy. I’m wondering if hair loss is a possible side effect?
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: No.
Subj: Phentermine side effects
9/1/2005
I’m 17 and my doctor put me on phentermine to help lose weight and I’ve never really researched it until today. I’ve taken it for about 3 months on a daily basis. It also helped with my concentration level but I can tell my body has become used to it and it doesn’t have the same effect it had when I first started. I’ve noticed blood in my stools lately but I never really thought anything of it until today. Have there been any tests for some kind of colon damage with this drug or anything like that? Should I get any tests done to see if there is something wrong?
H2O
AskDocWeb: Sounds like you have an irritated colon from the Phentermine. Talk to your doctor about this and he will likely tell you to discontinue use.
Subj: Phentermine weight loss

I am a mother of four children which includes 15 month old twins, a 3 year old, and a 5 year old. needless to say I was huge!! 198 pounds huge, plus I’m a skimpy little 5’2″! After taking phentermine for a little over 3 weeks I am now down to 163 pounds and it’s still melting away!! I feel so much better physically and emotionally. I would say though the side affects can be a tad bit uncomfortable it’s well worth the short time they last. YES!!! They do go away!!!

I took Phentermine 37.5 for about 25 days. I decided to take a break because it was making my heart race and I only had a few more pounds to lose. I was fine the first 2 days off of it, but on day 3 I hit rock bottom. I had horrible anxiety, depression, dizzy spells. I felt empty and just plain awful. Its been a week and a half and I still don’t feel right. It also messed up my menstrual cycle. I have always been 28 days like clock work. While on phen I started having a 24 day cycle and seemed like I was not ovulating…When will things get back to normal, mentally and physically? thanks,
Dana
AskDocWeb: It may take some time so be patient. Discuss this with your physician and see what he can do to alleviate your symptoms.
Subj: Phentermine and flair ups
Date: 9/13/2005
I have been using Phentermine off and on for about 90 days, with good results. I have lost 30 lbs. However I have Phorisis and it seems to flair up at times when I am using Phentermine. Is this a side effect or just coincidence.
Connie
