Sick to my stomach
1/14/2013
I just started taking phentermine and I stopped over the weekend because I was sick to my stomach and my heart rate goes up sometimes and it feels like my heart is in my throat. Is it ok to start taking it again?
Tessa
AskDocWeb: It would be safer to talk to your doctor first and give him or her a more complete description of your symptoms.
Taking Phentermine with a BMI under 30
1/15/2013
Just wanted to report that my period is always right on time and after taking Phentermine for over a month now my period is 5 days early. (frown) What causes this to happen? And what are the dangers of taking Phentermine with a BMI under 30? I’m 5’7 at 182lbs. Thanks,
Laurie
AskDocWeb: Phentermine puts stress on the heart, liver and kidneys, which could potentially be quite dangerous. For those who have a BMI under 30 there are many diet programs that don’t involve prescription drugs.
Breast size?

Will phentermine affect my breast size?
Lee
AskDocWeb: Phentermine has no effect on breast size, either larger or smaller.
Phentermine review
2/1/2013
I have been taking phentermine for 9 months and have lost 55 pounds. I did experience minor side effects at the beginning (very dry mouth, extreme hot flash/sweating a couple hours after taking it). However, those symptoms stopped fairly early. My doctor said I would mostly notice that I have more energy, and “just don’t mind bending over to pick up that thing from the floor” rather than walking past it. He was absolutely right. Over time I have cleaned all of my kitchen cabinets, the pantry, and most of the closets in our house.
I have not experienced any problems sleeping. Well, except for the time I stayed up most of the night pulling my too-big clothes out of the closet and packing them up to take to the Goodwill store – but that doesn’t count. It was exciting! I am amazed when I happen to catch my reflection in a window – and I think “is that really me??” I take the stairs at work more often now, and I can still breath and talk when I get to the third floor. I have started exercising (and enjoy it). I have lost 3 to 4 clothing sizes (kind of depends on the store and the item what size I wear). I don’t have to always shop in the “big girl” stores, although am not totally in the not-big-girl sizes yet. Yet!
I find that with phentermine I am happy with less food. Even able to eat pretty much the same food as before, I just want less of it. And I consciously make wiser food choices and am satisfied with them. I take lots of styrofoam containers home with me from restaurants! And if I DO overeat, boy am I miserable, so I definitely think harder about it the next time. I assume the phentermine, which suppresses appetite, makes me feel even fuller when I eat too much?
Probably the most negative thing I have experienced is constipation. I asked my doctor about it, and he recommended a generic stool softener daily (not a laxative). And I try to drink more water and eat fruits/veggies every day. That has helped, but I have to admit that I get excited when I finally do have a good BM. Oh well. I plan to ask him about it again at my next appointment.
I have hit two “plateaus” along the way, the first one about 3-4 months in. Getting serious about exercise helped me that time get back on track. The second one has been since Christmas. Am trying to find what will bump me back – gotta admit the exercise schedule suffered over the holidays. But frankly, I am pleased that I didn’t gain over Christmas, so am trying to keep it in perspective and continue my good habits. I feel better than I have in years, have been able to make changes in medications for conditions such as diabetes.
Right now, with my doctor’s approval, have stopped taking diabetes meds and am monitoring blood sugar levels more closely. Last two A1C levels were below 6 – yay! Hopefully will see little or no change with the next one (although down would be a good change!). I am excited beyond belief, and every visit to the doctor is a celebration now. If you are wondering if it will work for you, talk to your doctor. Do what he/she says. Keep your appointments. And don’t give up if you slip up a little. This is a life-long change you have to make, not a quick fix. I don’t ever want to go back to the way I was before, and I will keep the “before” picture forever to remind me that seeing it motivated me to do something about my appearance and my health.
I am SO glad I asked my doctor about weight loss. And I am glad that he allowed me the time to come to this decision on my own. Nagging doesn’t do any good. But he was there to help when I finally got to the point where I was willing to do something about it (it was that awful picture). Don’t give up. The only thing I regret is waiting so long to take care of myself.
