Subj: Phentermine and leg veins
Date: 9/18/2005
I started taking Phentermine about 2 months ago to help me further the weight I was loosing that suddenly plateau’s from diet and exercising. The only side effects that have effected me negatively has been my leg veins have been very visible and bruising. I also have been having hard bowels that have caused rectal bleeding from tearing the tissue. Are these normal side effects? I am afraid to tell my doctor when I go to see him because I like how this is training me not to over-eat which I have had a life-long problem of doing.
Kristen
AskDocWeb: There are other ways to train your body to avoid over eating. And there are Nutrition Consultants available at your local hospital that could help. It sounds like you need to be more concerned with what your body is trying to tell you. The bruising is bleeding beneath the skin, and your hard stools could be damaging also. We encourage you to speak with your doctor about this. Be honest and open with him and remember, he is there to help you. He’s on your side.
Subj: Long term effects of Phentermine
Date: 9/20/2005
Can long term use of phentermine cause thyroid problems? Long term = over 8 years of almost daily dosage of 17mg (a 37.5 cut in half)
Marnie
AskDocWeb: We have not seen any reference to this however, there are plenty of other reasons for this medication to be limited to short-term use. Watch for things like abnormal behavior, aggressiveness, heart problems, panic attacks and seizures.

I have been taking phentermine for four months. I just was told by my doctor that I have hyperthyroidism. My count was .08. Could the phentermine have caused this problem. I have never had any thyroid issues. I am really pleased with the results. I am experiencing high levels of fatigue. Thanks,
Ginger
AskDocWeb: Well to begin with, a high level of fatigue is not good. You should have discussed the Phentermine use with your physician when you went in for your thyroid check, but it’s still not too late to do this.
Subj: Phentermine diet pill

I have been taking phentermine with a combination of phendimetrazine for 11 days and I have lost 4 lbs, and loving it! I have the dry mouth, but that is a small price to pay.
Marie
AskDocWeb: Remember that you are to drink tons of water while on this.
Subj: Asenlix

Subj: Phentermine addiction
Date: 10/9/2005
I took phentermine for over 3 years now (on and off) as soon as I was off, I gained a lot of weight. I go back on and I loose a little and feel fantastic… the best way to describe the feeling is “everything seems so clear” – kinda like a focus type thing… When the medication wears off .. I can feel it. I become moody and everyone in my family knows exactly when it’s taking over and when it’s leaving. I feel like I’m addicted to these pills. Some doctors won’t give them to me anymore. I weigh 140– I’m not completely overweight. Some doctors will still give them to me. On the medication bottles it clearly states “to treat obesity”. The reason why I took phentermine was to loose a few pounds.. Now I’m completely addicted to them and they don’t even help me loose weight anymore.
The reason I take them now is to stay awake for school. I feel so ridiculous telling someone I’m addicted to diet pills.. but my family has seen it and knows me well. They would tell anyone the same thing. PHENTERMINE IS ADDICTING! don’t take it! It makes you stupid too. I have become so unfocused and dumb at my job. I forget a lot. My mind is altered now. I think it did something to me and I will never be the same.. Sometimes I can’t remember certain events that were once important to me.
The only time I feel like myself is when I am taking them. Since I have been taking them so long, I became tolerant to it and it does not last that long. My “high” last now for only 3 hours VS before 24 hrs. I double up and I can sleep with the medication peacefully no problem- my boyfriend needs to literally shake me to wake me up though. I will sleep for 2 days if no one wakes me up. Not even my alarm can wake me up. My sleeping pattern has gotten so extreme that if I sit down without moving– watching TV, reading (or if I go to school without taking it) I will fall asleep within a few minutes. I don’t recommend this drug at all. It’s practically speed!

Subj: Regret taking Phentermine
Date: 10/18/2004
I have been taking Phentermine for about 5 years now. It helped me get down to 135 pounds from 155 pounds but that was within the first few months of taking it. It increased my energy level so I was able to exercise like a maniac which also helped me get into shape. Mind you, when I began taking it I was 43 and since then have gone through menopause. I am now 49 and this drug doesn’t work for me. I need to get off it but I can’t. I am totally addicted to it. When I don’t take it I become extremely depressed. I have no ambition at all. I’m even getting depressed when I take the drug. Maybe it’s menopause but in my opinion the only benefit from this drug is the initial weight loss. After that I just took it so I wouldn’t gain it back. Now it seems I need it or I don’t feel good without it. Since you lose weight with Phentermine within the first few months of taking it and the effect of the drug begins to wear out after that, I agree that this medication should be used in the short term. I only wish I had.

Subj: Sore throat and high blood pressure
Date: 10/18/2004
I’ve only been taking phentermine for five days and have already lost 7 pounds. But I’ve been having daily headaches, sore throat and a pretty significant raise in my blood pressure and pulse, which as I understand, are all side effects of this medicine. Should I discontinue use? I’m kind of torn because I’ve already seen results, but I don’t want to be doing more harm than good.
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: You should immediately report this to your physician. Make sure your doctor knows about these side effects. You can lose weight by methods other than taking phentermine.
Subj: Phentermine for a flight attendant?
Date: 11/2/2005
Would you recommend phentermine to a flight attendant, and allow them to continue their duties flying? I am very concerned of possible safety issues with taking the drug and flying.
Mike
AskDocWeb: No, we would not recommend Phentermine to any flight attendant.
Subj: Phentermine
Date: 11/2/2005
I just began taking phentermine 4 days ago. I can see how someone might abuse the drug b/c it takes my appetite away to the point that I have to remember to eat. I use that fact to my advantage by easily eating 6 small, nutritious meals/day. The appetite suppressant lasts all day until bedtime for me and I weight 217lbs. The added energy is great b/c that was my excuse for not exercising. I wake up a 1/2hr early and exercise with my husband for an hr daily. I only ordered a 30 day supply b/c of the habit forming warning. I intend on using these 4 weeks on the phentermine to my advantage. I will have gotten used to the new eating and workout routine by the time my prescription is done and use only the healthier eating and exercise to continue and maintain the weight loss.

Subj: Antibiotic with Phentermine?
Date: 11/3/2005
I am taking the phentermine and was wondering if taking erthromycin for acne will distrupt my other medication?
Juile
AskDocWeb: No, Erythromycin should not affect phentermine.
Subj: Headaches
Date: 11/4/2005
I am prone to headaches and have had a nagging headache since before I started phentermine. I have taken tylonol to no avail. Could I take a different type of pain reliever such as naproxen sodium? That usually works for me. Thanks
C
AskDocWeb: Your headaches could be caused by many things, have you tried 600 mgs of Motrin/or Ibuprofen?
Subj: Phentermine numbness
Date: 11/6/2005
I’ve been taking Phentermine on and off for about 8 years. I’ve used it to lose baby weight after each of my 3 children. The problem is that I just recently began having numbness in my right leg and foot after resuming phentermine again. This had never happened before and I didn’t associate it with phentermine at first. Still to be on the safe side, I stopped using it for about a month. Yesterday, I broke down and took 15 mg and by tonight I have numbness in my left side. I want to know will this eventually go away? The numbness on my right side stayed even after I stopped the phentermine. I’d hate to think that this is permanent.
Denise
AskDocWeb: Sounds like you have developed a tolerance and will no longer be able to safely take this drug. Tell your physician about the numbness.
Subj: Hair loss with Phentermine
Date: 11/8/2005
Hi…can anyone tell me if they are suffering hair loss with use of phentermine…it seems to be happening to me and I am very, very worried.
Annalise
AskDocWeb: Hair loss is not listed as an official side effect of this drug. However, hair thinning has been reported by others when they have used phentermine. Stress also causes hair loss, lack of vitamins in your diet, etc.
Subj: Phentermine joint pain
Date: 11/10/2005
I started taking Phentermine on a Tuesday and by Friday my knees and other joints hurt very bad. At the advise of my doctor I stopped taking it for a week and then started again. After two days I noticed the pain in my knees again. Has anyone else heard/had any joint issues while taking this medication? I lost 3 pounds in the first 4 days I took it so I know it was working.
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: Joint pain is not one of the reported side effects of this medication but it sounds like something is causing you pain. You may want to talk to your doctor about an alternative, there are many. Read more feedback from users.
