Subj: Discontinuing Phentermine
Date: 11/15/2005
I have been taking phentermine for 5 months now and have lost 57 lbs. I am wanting to stop taking this medication but not sure if I should just stop or wean off it. If anyone has any suggestions or answers, it would be a great help. Thanks,
Cori
AskDocWeb: The most comfortable way to wean off of anything is to gradually reduce the amount you are taking over time.

What is the long term effects of taking phentramin on and off for a long time? I stop for a few weeks in between but I am worried.
Emily
AskDocWeb: So far we haven’t discovered any long-term effects. If you find any, please share your experience.

Hi, I am 18 and I have tried just about every diet out there. In the past I have even resorted to self starvation and bulimia. I was happy to get over these addictive illnesses but still not happy with my self-image. I ordered phentermine a couple weeks ago and have been taking them now for 10 days. I am very happy that with taking them, exercising and eating healthy that I have already lost 10 lbs. but at the same time I am starting to feel concerned about my health. Since I started taking them I have been blacking out numerous times a day, once to the point that I fell to the floor for a couple minutes. Also I consistently feel a burning sensation in my upper stomach kind of the feeling of an ulcer could this be? One last thing, I find that I have moments where I just lose all my strength, and when I feel this way its like I don’t have enough energy to even take a breath and when I do it hurts like there is something heavy in my chest. Sorry that this was so long but if you have any info or advice please let me know.
Jessica
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you should be checked out by your physician immediately. You may need a brain CATscan. It is scary that you would even consider continuing phentermine with those kinds of symptoms. There may be a serious problem here so please get examined immediately.
Subj: Hope this works
Date: 11/21/2005
I recently started taking this. It is a little weird. I hope it works. I must stay positive, it must be I am 250 pounds and I know the health risk so I still take it. I hope nothing goes wrong. I have ate 2 times in two days but now I must eat healthy, we’ll see. I’ll be back in 12 weeks wish me luck.
Tae
AskDocWeb: Yes, good luck to you Tae.
Subj: Asenlix
Date: 11/23/2005
What can you tell me about the diet pill Asenlix? Thank you,
Martha
AskDocWeb: Asenlix was banned in the USA and the EU because of the negative side effects it has on the central nervous system (CNS), but it is still manufactured in Mexico.
Subj: Phentermine 37mg
Date: 11/26/2005
Hi, I took Phentermine 37mg for 3 months, and lost very minimal pounds. Towards the end of the medication, I had a seizure, and now am going in to get my heart checked. I am very, very weight conscious and do not like how heavy I am. However, something that each person needs to ask themselves prior to taking the medication is, do the side effect outweigh the benefits?

I have been on and off of phentermine for about 1 year now. Are there any documentation of people being on phentermine longer than that time with any problems? Has there been any documentation of symptoms that more than a few people state they have that triggers them to know that something may be wrong? Other than the liver what other concerns should one have when taking this med for long periods of time?
Gigi
AskDocWeb: Long term stimulation of the nervous system could leave you with permanent tremors. The long term increase in heart rate is also a concern, because of the strain on the heart. There is a chance that your body could build up a tolerance and it will stop working for you. The biggest concern is that you may develop a dependency on Phentermine.
Subj: Yellow eyes
Date: 11/28/2005
My boss is taking Phentermine for 5 weeks. I just noticed he now has yellow eyes. What can be the cause?
Lakisha
AskDocWeb: Possible liver damage, he had better have his blood drawn for a liver function test at his physicians office.
Subj: Doxepin and red bull
Date: 12/2/2005
I take doxepin and I drink red bull to counter the sleepiness. What are the risks?
Alma
AskDocWeb: That combination may produce heart palpitations, rapid pulse, and/or high blood pressure. If you notice any changes talk to your doctor, he may want you to discontinue the Red Bull.
Subj: MVP
Date: 12/6/2005
I have MVP. Is it okay to take phentermine? I have taken the drug in the past but have recently been diagnosed with MVP. I would like to start taking the phentermine again but I am a little concerned about whether or not it is safe now being diagnosed with MVP.
Thanks,
Jenny
AskDocWeb: That is something your doctor needs to decide for you.

I am not obese but I feel I am overweight. Will I get sick using Phentermine? Has anyone ever died using Phentermine? How is Phentermine different than Hydricut or metabolife??
Tanya
AskDocWeb: Feelings alone are not an adequate test of reality. Just because you “feel” you are overweight doesn’t mean that you are. You can take our BMI test and find out. Phentermine has not caused anyone to die. The main difference between Phentermine and the products you mentioned is that they are supplements and Phentermine is a prescription drug. Metabolife has over 13,000 complaints against it.

About a week and a half ago I took two Phentermine 37.5mg tablets on two consecutive days, and yesterday I took half of one and today I took a whole one. I was also just diagnosed with clinical depression and have been prescribed Lexapro for the depression and Ambien for the restless sleeping. I was wondering about the possible interactions since I had only taken a small amount of phentermine. Help?
Stacy
AskDocWeb: If you take phentermine too late in the day it will cause insomnia. Phentermine can also cause depression. It appears that you were prescribed two new medications just so you can keep taking phentermine. Hopefully those drugs will not have side effects that require additional drugs to counteract.
Subj: Phentermine and meridia
Date: 12/10/2005
Can I alternate taking phentermine on weekends and meridia during the week. I have both prescribed to me but have not taken together. Thanks,
Rhyan
AskDocWeb: No, that sounds like a bad idea. Talk to your doctor about which one you should be taking and then follow instructions.
Subj: Phentermine 37.5mg
Date: 12/11/2005
I just start taking the phentermine 37.5mg 12/10/05
Precious
AskDocWeb: Good luck Precious, and let us know how it works.
Subj: Pain and numbness
Date: 12/12/2005
I have been taking phentermine on and off for a year now and am no longer within the BMI range for a prescription. However, I still have some. I have taken some (30mg) consistently the last 2 weeks and have noticed that my left upper arm, the under side hurts and my pinky and ring finger is numb, yet my blood pressure is normal. I have searched the internet to see if this is a symptom of phentermine, but have not found any information. Can you please advise? Thank you.
Dana
Askdocwesb: We haven’t found these symptoms to be caused by phentermine in any of our information sources.
Subj: Phentermine and menstrual period
Date: 12/14/2005
Could phentermine cause changes in menstrual period?
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: Several women have reported that it caused changes in their menstrual period.
Subj: No weight loss

I have been married for almost 7 years and just had my 2nd (and final) child 5 months ago. I am about 135 pounds and 5’3″, which is about 15 pounds heavier than when I married. I told my doctor that I was feeling down, about weaning the baby and my weight (I have been working out 5 hours a week for the past 2 months with no weight loss at all). He gave me a prescription for 30 days of Phentermine 37.5mg. He said to come back when I’m out and he will give me a new Rx if it is working for me. My question is, because I am not obese, just a little heavy: Was it wrong for my doc to prescribe Phentermine for me?
Angelique
AskDocWeb: It wasn’t wrong for your doctor to prescribe it but read the side effects and make your own decision whether you want to start them or not. You just had your baby 5 months ago and it can take up to a year to lose the pregnancy weight. We suggest increasing your physical activity with things you enjoy doing, walking with friends/family, dancing, etc..
Subj: Agitated and angry
Date: 1/3/2006
Are there any cases of people taking phentermine and stop for a few days and become increasingly agitated and almost violent? I have been taking phentermine on a regular basis and so has my husband. A few days ago I stopped as prescribed and now I feel very angry at everything and I have insane mood swings at the drop of a hat, has anyone else reported this? I told my Husband that I thought it was the meds. but he laughs and says that it may be “female hormone issues” what can I do??
Cathy
AskDocWeb: Don’t listen to your husbands laughter, listen to what your body is telling you. If these symptoms persist more than a week, talk to your doctor.
Subj: Serious side effects?
Date: 1/5/2006
Is burning tongue and dry mouth a serious side effect of taking phentermine? Can it be an allergic reaction?
Barbara
AskDocWeb: It is not a listed side effect, but that is not saying it couldn’t cause what you are experiencing. Check these side effects out with your physician before they become worse.
Subj: Nervous breakdown
Date: 1/11/2006
I took Phentermine for 4 months until Summer 2006. I came off it gradually – had bad withdrawal effects – then developed bad depression and anxiety – finally had a nervous breakdown in February this year – would not recommend Phentermine to anyone – it is a dangerous drug. It is a quick fix to weight problems that causes long term irreparable damage. Stay away!
JC
Subj: Phentermine and menstruation
Date: 1/12/2006
Does the use of phentermine cause heavy menstruation?
Debbie
AskDocWeb: The changes in your body from the phentermine can cause your menstruation to change. If you are losing a lot and feel exhausted, seek help from your physician. You may have to take something else to lose weight. Read more feedback from users.
