Subj: Gained all weight back
Date: 2/28/2006
I have took Phentermine now for 10 years, I have gained all of my weight back and have severe aches and stay tired. I stopped taking the drug 1 week ago and I feel very “weird and foggy” in my head if that makes sense. Almost like I am going to have a panic attack. How long do these after effects last after stopping the drug? Thanks,

Cyndie

AskDocWeb: As far as the severe aches and feeling exhausted, these symptoms should be checked out by your physician because this could be something else. The feeling of “foggy” should decrease soon but because everyone is different we can’t give you an exact time frame.

Subj: Phentermine is quick!
Date: 3/5/2006
I started taking Phenterine on Dec 14, 2005. I had climbed up to 179 pounds at only 5’3″. I have gone from a size 14/16 to 8/10. I have lost 24 pounds and can’t believe that it happened so quick. I plan on taking Phentermine for one more month and then tapering off the last two weeks. It really works, but I would recommend to anyone to also change your eating habits to eating foods that are health and not fast foods. If you don’t you will be right back to where you started. Also please drink water, water, water. This will help you flush your body of the toxins that are there. Also increase your metabolic system by at least walking every day or every other day. I look better at 52 than I did at 42.

Judy

AskDocWeb: Congratulations on all your hard work, and thank you for your story.

Subj: Phentermine and Cushing’s Disease
Date: 3/8/2006
I was wondering if there is any connection with Phentermine and Cushing’s Disease? I was on Phentermine, prescribed by a doctor, for 8 weeks and 6 months later I was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease with an adrenal tumor. Just wondering if there is any studies connecting the two.

Aleisha

AskDocWeb: None that we know about.

Subj: Phentermine hair loss
Date: 3/10/2006
I have been taking Phentermine for a month and a half now. I have noticed my hair has been thinning (especially at the top) pretty rapidly. I have read that other women have experienced this. I’m pretty convinced it is the diet pill that is causing this…considering my hair has only acted this way once before (with a bad experience of drug use) which was about 3 years ago. It had grown back from the first experience with hair loss (not back to it’s full potential, but close enough). I am pretty stressed about losing my hair, for I have taken my hair for granted. I am wondering if I should stop taking phentermine (37.5mg once daily) or maybe reduce the dosage to half. And of course…IS MY HAIR GOING TO GROW BACK????!!!! Please have some advice for me. Thank you, Lisa.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: To date we have not heard of a single case where hair loss caused by a drug was permanent. When the drug was discontinued the hair grew back. So eat healthy, get plenty of exercise, and you should be okay.

Subj: Aspartame false hunger?
Date: 3/12/2006
Does Aspartame that is found in many diet drinks actually cause the feeling of hunger?

Terry

AskDocWeb: That does seem to be the case as reported by those who have taken the 60-Day No Aspartame Test. It seems to create a “false hunger” that can become almost constant and turn into heartburn. When they quit drinking diet drinks with Aspartame their stomach improved almost immediately. If you take the “60-Day No Aspartame Test” let us know your results.

Subj: Bad experience
Date: 3/16/2006
I started taking phentermine 37.5 mg a day along with 20 mg a day of prozac on 3/6/06. I decided on this combination based on the website/advice of Dr. Anchors, who started the Phen-pro diet. Initially, I had the regular symptoms (dry mouth, racing heart, tremors, etc), and lost almost 9 pounds the first week. I still ate a small salad, fruit, cottage cheese, etc., as I didn’t want to make myself sick.

After one week, I woke up in the middle of the night with the worst stiff and sore neck I had ever had. I was up all night from there tossing and turning, almost in a delirious state. Around 7:30, when I got out of bed, my vision was all messed up. There was a bright white, sort of “halo”, on all things below my chest — and my eyes felt like they were bulging out of my head. After a couple of hours, these symptoms went away a little (but my eyes still bothered me, except no bright light halo). I went to work, and by 2 in the afternoon, my neck felt odd. I had a sore throat, and it seemed like a vein in my neck was bulging whenever I bent over…it hurt a little. I went into the bathroom to look at my neck and noticed that on both sides of my collar bone, there were bulges of flesh — swelling or edema of some sort. I was completely freaked out. I ended up in the emergency room with a heart rate of 142 and BP of 180/100. They thought I had heart failure or a blood clot because of the bulges/edema. After hours and hours, and a hundred tests, they sent me home telling me they didn’t know what it was, and that it didn’t even show up on a CT scan, even though they could see and feel it.

Needless to say, I feel like a wreck. It has been 4 days since I quit the meds, and I STILL have crazy BP, and the edema/swelling is still there…before this my BP was always LOW! I don’t know what the deal is, but I’m wondering if maybe I am one of those people who is sensitive to these kinds of drugs. Perhaps I should have started out on a much lower dose? Anyway, you all be careful, and start slow…I just hope what happened to me isn’t permanent….)o:

Subj: Different pills?
Date: 3/16/2006
Is there a difference between the phentermine solid white 37.5mg tablet and the white with blue specs 37.5mg tablet? In the past I had taken the white with blue specs and this time I have the solid white. The one with the blue specs worked MUCH better at controlling my appetite. Do you have an explanation for this? Thanks,

Tina

AskDocWeb: Pharmaceutical companies change the look of their pills all the time. They are both phentermine and both the same dosage, unless one had an extra ingredient that they decided not to put into the white ones. So unless you read the ingredients completely (patient information or package insert) on both there’s no answer.

Subj: Wean off Phentermine?
Date: 3/18/2006
If one becomes “addicted” to phentermine, how does one wean themselves off of it? Would dropping to a lower dosage (like going from 37.5 to 30, then to 15mg) help?

Raven

AskDocWeb: Yes it would help, but talk with a doctor about your plan and they will help you get on a healthy diet plan of limited calorie intake.

Subj: Feeling tired
Date: 3/19/2006
I just started taking phentermine (37.5 mg) and although I believe my appetite has decreased somewhat, instead of feeling more energized, I feel very tired. Is this normal? Will the medication still work? The only success I’ve ever had with diet pills was several years ago when I took Zenadrine, which made me feel very energized.

Amanda

AskDocWeb: You feel tired now, but with regular exercise your energy should pick up soon. And good luck with the weight loss.

Subj: Bloody mucus
Date: 3/23/2006
I have been taking phentermine off and on for about five years. Each time I take it, I develop extremely thick, sticky and bloody mucus in the back of my throat. I also run a low grade fever and have a very sore throat. I like taking phentermine because it has helped me lose weight when nothing else has, but I can’t stand this side effect I’m having. Have you ever heard of this with anyone else and is there anything I can do or take that would counteract this reaction?

Sandy

AskDocWeb: Sorry, we haven’t heard of anyone else having this type of problem. Sounds like you need to discuss this with your doctor, and do it soon. The blood is coming from somewhere and you need to find out where.

Subj: After breast augmentation surgery
Date: 3/23/2006
I just got Phentermine 30mg from an online pharmacy, but I also had a breast augmentation surgery 17 days ago, can I start taking it or should I wait longer?

Alyssa

AskDocWeb: Your doctor would likely tell you to wait until you are completely healed to make sure no infection sets in from the surgery. After that your doctor will know if it is safe to start taking the phentermine or not.

Subj: Doubling the dosage?
Date: 3/23/2006
I have been using Phetermine constantly since 10-05. In January I will double the dose to get the same effect. I work out regular and have lost 37 pounds in 5 months. An average of 1lbs and a half a week. I went from 36% body fat to 22.8 I feel fine and my blood pressure is always very good. Could I possibly be injuring my liver, or other major internal damage, 37.5 is the dosage?

Don

AskDocWeb: Yes, you are at the point where you really need to talk to your doctor. One reason Phentermine is only for short-term use is that you can become addicted. If you have developed a tolerance then continuing this drug may lead to serious problems.

Subj: Increased heartbeat
Date: 3/24/2006
You mentioned in one of your responses that a person’s heartbeat increases while taking phentermine. Should I notice the fast beating heart?

Carla

AskDocWeb: You may or may not, some people can feel it in the chest, even without touching it.

Subj: I am addicted
Date: 3/26/2006
I have been taking phentermine for several years and have increased the dose as my body became immune. I am very concerned because I know I am addicted but do not know how to come off of them and afraid to tell my doctor. I’m also worried of long term medical problems. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Staci

AskDocWeb: Your doctor is there to help you not to punish you. This is what doctors are meant for, to help when we are in need of help and it sounds like you could use some.

Subj: Itching with rashes
Date: 3/27/2006
I’m itching and have rashes. Is it because of phentermine?

Maria

AskDocWeb: It could be, if that is the only new thing you have taken then it would seem likely. Time to talk to your doctor.

Subj: Lost 50 pounds
Date: 3/28/2006
I took phentermine for about 4 months and lost 50lbs with a proper diet and exercise. I would stop the drug for one week a month to avoid withdrawal symptoms. I love it. I have maintained my weight of 150lbs for 3 years now!

Dlow

AskDocWeb: Great job, congratulations!
