Subj: Not working
Date: 9/25/2006
I recently started back on Phentermine after a year off. This time I ordered off the internet. I am taking 37.5 in the morning and 15mg in the late afternoon. I have been on it now for 3 weeks and have only lost 5 pounds. I feel very sleepy this time around? I wonder if I am taking too much? It is like I have some energy to clean and work, but then I just want to lay down and sleep. Headaches have started, hair has started to fall out, and I am still hungry? I just started taking Biotin for the hair, and will try to get more fruits in the menu.

Debbie

AskDocWeb: You have to be very careful of what you buy on-line because there are so many fake pills out there. It sounds like the one you purchased isn’t working the way you want it to work.

Subj: Phentermine to keep weight off
Date: 10/2/2006
I have been taking Phentermine for about 4 years and I don’t take it to loose weight, but to keep the weight off. I want to know if this medicine has been known to effect the body badly in the long run. I was told that Phen,Fhen together has caused cardiac arrest in numerous people in the past. Phentermine by itself as far as I know hasn’t resluted in cardia arrest.

Hollie

AskDocWeb: There have been rare cases of valvular heart disease in patients who have taken phentermine. This drug is only meant for short-term use (a few weeks) by those who are obese. Phentermine loses its effectiveness over time.

Subj: Phentermine and liver problems?
Date: 10/3/2006
I have taken Phentermine 37.5 off and on for a few years, I recently had a baby in June of 2006 (I stopped breastfeeding) and in July I decided to take the pills to help loose the excess wait faster. I had been taken it for a month and a half however, I stopped after a month because I was experiencing severe pains in my side which turns out to be my enzymes in my liver are to high. My PCP is running further test to determine if I have liver disease or liver damage, and just for the record in March of 2006 my blood work was normal and now on September 25th my blood work came back to high. I am not one to blame the Phentermine however it may be the cause of problems with my liver and it may not, only further tests will tell.

Subj: Tapering off of Phentermine
Date: 10/7/2006
I have been taking phentermine for 1 year this month. What is the best way to get off this medication? I tried not taking it for 4 days and felt as if I had the flu. It has been great with weight loss but I know I have taken it too long. I have recently started prozac and I am nervous about taking them together. Any advice on tapering off would be greatly appreciated.

Tonya

AskDocWeb: Tapering off usually involves cutting down to one every other day for a week, then one every third day, etc.

Subj: Phentermine headaches
Date: 10/8/2006
I have been taking phentermine for 7 months. I lost 25 lbs. without starving myself or too much exercise. I am happy with the results and feel healthy except, lately I’ve been getting headaches. Could phentermine be the reason? What are possible long term effects of this drug? Please answer,

Narie

AskDocWeb: Phentermine is for short term use and should ONLY be used short term. Yes it can cause headaches, if Tylenol doesn’t help, have a talk with your doctor.

Subj: Phentermine Xanax
Date: 10/9/2006
I was wondering if while taking Phentermine on a daily dosage, and sometimes taking Xanax would cause a problem or counter act on each other?

Kim

AskDocWeb: Taking them together may not be a good idea, better talk with your doctor about going on a strict diet.

Subj: Wellbutrin, lexapro and phentermine?
Date: 10/15/2006
I am on wellbutrin and lexapro, is it safe to take phentermine?

Karoline

AskDocWeb: If Phentermine is taken with an anti-depressant there is a potential for complications like serotonin syndrome, a potentially lethal condition that is caused by the release of excessive amounts of serotonin.

Subj: Funny taste
Date: 10/16/2006
How long does your mouth should have that funny taste, and soreness to it. I know it say a few weeks but it has been about three weeks now so I just want to make sure should I keep taking phentermine. thank you,

Geneva

AskDocWeb: Have your physician examin your mouth and throat before you make a decision to stay on Phentermine.

Subj: Good experience with Phentermine
Date: 10/16/2006
Hi, I’m Sonia and I starting taking phentermine about six months ago. I truly stand behind this product. I used to have such a bad image of myself and was really unenergized and unhappy. I feel more productive and feel good about myself now that I can see a difference in my weight and stamina. I think as long as you take Phentermine in a balanced way and still make sure your eating and exercising and taking breaks like recommended then you should have a good experience.

Sonia 😉

Subj: Hair is falling out
Date: 10/20/2006
Hi, I’ve been taking this product for two months. The first two months I felt great, but now I feel sick. I wake up feeling fine. But by 11:00 I feel sick. I’m dizzy, shaking, and sick to my stomach. I also noticed my hair is falling out. What should I do? I don’t want to eat. Maybe that’s why my hair is falling out? I think I’m going to stop taking it for a couple of days and see how I feel.

Tina

Subj: Phentermine
Date: 11/2/2006
Hi, I have taken phentermine 37.5 mg off and on for about a year. I was wondering how long it takes to get it completely out of your system?

Sara

AskDocWeb: Most of it is out of the body in a couple of weeks but some Phentermine can stay in the body for up to a month after stopping.

Subj: Phentermine side effect?
Date: 11/6/2006
I used to take Adipex 37.5mg when I was 16 and it worked great. It gave me alot of energy (I walked 4 miles the first day) and it controlled my hunger. I lost 25 pounds in one month. Now I’m 23 and started taking Phentermine 37.5mg (white pill with blue dots) on 10/26/06. The doc told me to take half a tablet on the mornings and I didn’t feel nothing. I just felt more tired than before, so the 3rd day I took a whole pill and I still feel the same way. It has controlled my hunger but it makes me feel tired and with dry mouth. Is being tired a side effect?

Alana

AskDocWeb: Yes it can, fatigue is one of the signs of overdose. Please talk to your doctor about this.

Subj: Lost almost 30 pounds
Date: 11/12/2006
I have taken phentermine for 5 months now and have lost almost 30 pounds. I want to quit taking it, but I am afraid that I will gain all the weight back. If I eat right and exercise, will I gain it all back in the beginning?

Jenny

AskDocWeb: Not necessarily, it may fluctuate for a while but if you keep exercising, walk two miles every day and eat right you have a good chance of keeping your weight under control.

Subj: Lips turn blue
Date: 11/16/2006
Using phentermine and sometimes provigil…notice my lips turn blue ONLY on my left side! What’s going on?

Mary

AskDocWeb: You need to consult with your doctor to see what your next step is, which may include discontinuing the Phentermine.

Subj: Hair started to fall out
Date: 11/25/2006
I liked the phentermine but after 20 months my hair started to fall out. I stopped the use and hoping for my hair to grow back.

Lizzy

AskDocWeb: You could help that by using a shampoo to fight hair loss.

Subj: Military drug test
Date: 11/26/2006
I read the above comment about phentermine not being detected in urinalyses. Isn’t it a methamphetamine derivative? If so, how would it not show up if testing for MDMA? Please let me know as soon as possible. I too am in the military and need to be certain. Thanks, KG

KG

AskDocWeb: If you could find out the name of the drug test that the military uses then we could be sure. Phentermine can cause a false positive if they use the cheap EMIT test but if they use the more expensive (and more accurate) GC/MS test then there is no problem.

Subj: Drug test
Date: 11/27/2006
Phentermine hcl 37.5. is this med., amphetamines? will it cause a positive amphetamine urine drug test? Answer ASAP please!

Karon

AskDocWeb: Yes it is possible. Phentermine has been reported to cause a false positive for Amphetamines and Ecstasy on urine tests (Ref: 3, 4, 11)

Subj: Addiction
Date: 11/28/2006
I have been taking phentermine on and off for 5 years. I have currently been on phentermine for 6 months straight. Although mood swings, dry mouth, irritability, headaches are for me a known side effect, the past 3 months I am loosing a significant amount of hair. I have also developed what I think is OCD due to prolonged use including pulling out my eyelashes and eyebrows and excessively picking my face. I am now realizing I have an addiction and it feels good to tell someone.

Missy

Subj: Fen-phen
Date: 11/29/2006
I did not notice a response to the following question. I have the same question and would like the answer too. Can you give feedback doc? Becky Subj: Phentermine A few years ago, I took fen-phen for about 6 months. I was never tested to make sure that everything was okay. Now I am taking Phentermine. How safe is this drug considering I had been on the fen-phen in the past? Does is increase my chances of health problems? Has anyone ever reported any serious health conditions or possibly death?

Ryan

AskDocWeb: Yes, there are serious health considerations from having taken Fen-phen (the combination of Fenfluramine and Phentermine). Make sure that both your doctor and your dentist knows that you have taken Fen-phen.

CDC Recommendations Regarding Fen-Phen

1. All persons exposed to fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine, for any period of time, either alone or in combination with other agents, should undergo a medical history and cardiovascular examination by their physician to determine the presence or absence of cardiopulmonary signs or symptoms.

2. An echocardiographic evaluation should be performed on all persons who were exposed to fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine for any period of time, either alone or in combination with other agents, and who exhibit cardiopulmonary signs (including a new murmur) or symptoms suggestive of valvular disease (e.g., dyspnea).

3. Although the clinical importance of asymptomatic valvular regurgitation in exposed patients and the risk for developing bacterial endocarditis in these patients are unknown, practitioners should strongly consider performing echocardiography on all persons regardless of whether they have cardiopulmonary signs or symptoms who have been exposed to fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine for any period of time, either alone or in combination with other agents, BEFORE the patient undergoes any invasive procedure for which antimicrobial endocarditis prophylaxis is recommended by 1997 AHA (American Heart Association) guidelines.

Any echocardiographic findings that meet the AHA criteria for prophylaxis regardless of whether they are attributable to possible fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine use should be recognized as indications for antibiotic prophylaxis. The invasive procedures include certain medical or dental procedures where antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended as defined by the 1997 AHA guidelines. For emergency procedures for which cardiac evaluation cannot be performed, empiric antibiotic prophylaxis should be administered according to the 1997 AHA guidelines.

4. Because of the prevalence of minimal degrees of regurgitation in the general population, the current case definition of drug-associated valvulopathy should include exposed patients with echocardiographically demonstrated AR of mild or greater severity and/or MR of moderate or greater severity, based on published criteria.
