Subj: Half of pill?
Date: 4/29/2007
It says to take my phentermine on a empty stomach, so how long after taking it in the morning, do I eat a bowl of cherrios, or something light? Can I take a half of pill in morning then another half at noon, and it work as well?

Tammy

AskDocWeb: You can identify which pills are meant to be broken in half by a score line (groove) across them, not Phentermine. Even if you take it right before breakfast, that is still taking it on an empty stomach.

Subj: Gas
Date: 5/1/2007
Lots of gas at night from both ends.

Subj: Phentermine not helping
Date: 5/2/2007
I have used phentermine for about 3 months. I quit taking it because it seemed to give me energy somewhat but wasn’t helping me not to eat. Like someone else said, I just craved sweets! Anyway, my blood pressure is high right now and I am wondering if it will go back down after a couple of weeks or so of not taking it?
Ann

AskDocWeb: Your blood pressure should to normal within a week. Note for readers, if anyone notices an increase in their blood pressure, immediately see your physician.

Subj: Kidney infection?
Date: 5/2/2007
Hi, I have been taking Phentermine for 3 months now. I had a terrible kidney infection and had to go to the ER. The pain was so severe that I received morphine for pain. I took antibiotics and stayed off of my phentermine for 14 days. I started taking it again and have been on it for less than 3 weeks and I am already having the same pain in my right side where I had the pain before. Could this medicine be causing this extreme pain? Or could it be effecting my adrenal gland in anyway thus having an effect on my kidneys?

Lee Ann

AskDocWeb: No affect on the kidneys is noted in our references but you could be developing an unrelated problem, please see a urologist.

Subj: Changes in sense of taste/smell?
Date: 5/2/2007
I am taking Phentermine and Bontril and am wondering if a problem I am having could be related to these medications. Any strong smell or taste (perfume, food etc) give me the SAME offensive taste/smell. It has been going on for a while and I think it was even before I started the meds, but I cannot remember for certain. Heard of this? Any suggestions about cause?.

Deborah

AskDocWeb: Yes, we put together a couple of pages about it, one for taste and one for smell.

Subj: Over 100 pounds overweight
Date: 5/3/2007
This is a very informative board. I have been researching phentermine when I happened upon your info about not taking it with anti depressants. I have been on Celexa and now Lexapro for the past 8 years for depression. I am over 100 pounds overweight and would probably benefit greatly by taking phentermine. I have tried weaning myself off my anti depressants before but have not been successful. Do you have any suggestions for weight loss or an alternate to the Lexapro that I could use while temporarily taking Phentermine? Thanks in advance,

Val

AskDocWeb: We suggest you contact your doctor for help that is specific to your situation. The purpose of this website is to share information about side effects.

Subj: Concerned about bowel movement
Date: 5/5/2007
Hi! I have been taking phentermine for 5 weeks and have lost 17lbs! I have a concern though. I realize I’m not eating as much as I used to but I only have a bowel movement if I take a stimulant! I don’t feel discomfort from constipation but it worries me to only go once a week maximum. I drink 90 ounces of water daily so I don’t know what the problem is. Please help me! Thanx.

Elaine

AskDocWeb: You need to visit your doctor to find out what is going on. The reason why doctors recommend limiting use of laxatives to once or twice a month is that constipation can indicate a serious problem such as prostate enlargement, uterine fibroids, or uterine or colorectal cancer.

You should know that most people think they are constipated when they are really not. According to the FDA’s Advisory Review Panel, anything in the range of three bowel movements a day to three a week is normal. If you have less than three bowel movements a week it is typically caused by a combination of too little exercise, too little fiber and not enough fruit in your diet.

Subj: Lower sex drive?
Date: 5/9/2007
Is there a lack of intimacy or a lower sex drive if phentermine is taken?

Roy

AskDocWeb: Changes in libido (sexual drive) have been reported from those who take Phentermine but the manufacturer does not say what percentage of people have that side effect.

Subj: Illness and withdrawal
Date: 5/15/2007
Hi, I am on Phentermine, and recently had finals in college. I think from the stress, I was susceptible to getting ill and I got the flu. I was feeling so bad, I forgot to fill my prescription of Phentermine and my illness lasted a couple of weeks…I had the flue, diarrhea, pink-eye and extreme fatigue, depression and fogginess. I drove to the store and almost crashed my car. It didn’t even occur to me that maybe I was experiencing withdrawals on top of being sick. I felt so fuzzy-minded…I finally feel relief realizing why my personality had changed. Can being sick increase the reaction to a drup like that??

Robyn

AskDocWeb: Yes, and it can certainly confuse things. There is no way to know which (withdrawal or illness) is causing what affects. The fatigue was likely due to having diarrhea. Your depression and fogginess was probably a combination of being off the Phentermine and illness. The Pink eye is a separate issue all together not caused by being off of the Phentermine.

Subj: Second time on Phentermine
Date: 5/16/2007
Hello! I used phentermine last year for 3 months lost 50 pounds…I never gained the weight back but now I am on it again to lose some more weight and I was wondering if it has the same effect if you take it a year later? Some people say it doesn’t some say it does. I’m so confused.

Kelly

AskDocWeb: That’s understandable because some people build up a tolerance for the drug and some people don’t. You will just have to find out for yourself how your body responds to this medication.

Subj: Glaucoma
Date: 5/16/2007
I have been taking Phentermine for about 1.5 weeks now. I know you are not supposed to take it if you have glaucoma. I do not, but my maternal grandmother did and lost one of her eyes b/c of it. Since starting the medicine I have had a lot of pressure around my eyes and feel like I just want to close my eyes b/c it is so much pressure. I even felt like a had a filmy substance over my eye the other day that I could not get rid of. Any advice?

Connie

AskDocWeb: Yes, since you have a family history of glaucoma, get your eyes checked ASAP.

Subj: Loss of menstrual period and vaginal discharge
Date: 5/18/2007
Does Phentermine cause lost of menstrual period and a vaginal discharge???

Monica

AskDocWeb: Phentermine can change your mensis but we suggest you have your doctor check to see if you have a yeast infection.

Subj: Should I trust my doctor?
Date: 5/22/2007
I asked my doctor to put me on Phentermine to jump start my weight loss and I have now been on it for 6 weeks now. I have lost about 15lbs. He wants to stay with the medication and it really scares me because of what it might do to me. I like that I don’t want to eat but I am just freaked out about the damage that it could cause my liver. Should I trust my doctor?

Shelly

AskDocWeb: Trust what you think is best for you, in the long run you will be happier. You may want to get a second opinion.

Subj: Can’t function
Date: 5/22/2007
I started taking phentermine last January and it did a miracle first two months and then it stopped working for me. My doctor suggested it was time to stop and I did. But I didn’t know I was hooked on the med. Without the phentermine, I am so depressed and sleepy all the time. I can’t function. So last 2 weeks I am trying to get off the med but so far no success because I am a single mom with demanding full time job. I can’t afford to be sleepy or non function. It’s really severe that last Sunday I was almost going to fall a sleep behind the wheels. I am so scared and don’t know how to deal with withdrawal symptoms. My doctor suggested taking B complex vitamins but they don’t work either. I eat and drink so much coffee to stay awake at work. Please help!

Wild

AskDocWeb: It sounds like it will take some time to adjust to being without the phentermine. The vitamins are a good idea. You might also want to have some bloodwork done at your physicians office to make sure there isn’t something else happening.

Subj: Happy with results
Date: 5/23/2007
I have been using Phentermine for about 3 months and I have lost over 25 lbs., I am very happy with the results, I am not hungry and have great amounts of energy, unlike most other diets I have tried. I have noticed my weight decrease has slowed, so I want to take a break, what amount of time is recommended before starting back up? Thanxxxx,

Field

AskDocWeb: There really isn’t a recommended amount of time to wait before starting again. Once you start developing a tolerance it’s time to seek out alternatives.

Subj: Swelling in lower legs, ankles and feet
Date: 5/26/2007
I have been taking Phentermine 37.5 mg for 7 weeks. I have lost 8 1/4 pounds. I am feeling more energetic. A friend and I have started walking a mile 5 days per week. The walking has been great for us. Three weeks ago I noticed my ankles were swollen. A few days later – I could tell that my feet and lower legs were swelling. Over the past weekend – my lower legs, ankles and feet really puffed up to about half again their normal size. Called my Dr. on Monday to ask if my edema problem could be due to a side effect of the phentermine – was edema a side effect? His nurse consulted with Dr. then returned to phone and advised me that, ‘no, edema was not a side effect of Phentermine.’ I have an appointment in a few days. My lower legs/ankles/feet are so swollen – so tight – that it is uncomfortable doing our daily walks. I am still taking the Phentermine. I am also taking Avandia for diabetes. I do not have any heart problems/ elevated blood pressure/ shortness of breath, etc. Except for this major edema problem – I feel fine. Recently, I have found several web sites which mention edema as a possible side effect of Phentermine. What are your thoughts on the subject, edema in conjunction with Phentermine?

Lonny

AskDocWeb: The information we have (PDR) says that Phentermine should be discontinued in patients who develop lower extremity edema because of the possibility of developing Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH). And it is extremely important that you report this to your doctor. Read more feedback from users.
