Subj: I am pregnant
Date: 6/9/2004
I have been using phentermine 37.5 for four months now. I have lost 31 pounds. I just found out yesterday that I am pregnant. I was only 2 days late for my period so I am only about 4 weeks along gestationally. I immediately stopped taking the phentermine. Are there any risks to the baby and if so what are the risks and what are the statistics (chances) of these risks occurring? I am very worried! Thank you!
Lynn
AskDocWeb: Although there is little information on Phentermine exposures during early pregnancy, what information we have shows no increase in the rate of birth defects.
For your peace of mind, a sonogram or ultrasound examination can be used to determine if the baby has physical birth defects. An ultrasound allows a health care provider to see many things, including the baby’s head and spine. Because an ultrasound may not pick up all birth defects, you may want to ask your health care provider about the MSAFP test (maternalserum alpha fetoprotein test). It can detect many neural tube defects.
Subj: Up side effect
Date: 6/13/2004
I took Phentermine for three months. The third month I didn’t lose any weight despite running, cycling, and dieting. However, I had been previous diagnosed with a sleep disorder ( I have difficulty staying awake) With the phentermine I am able to be awake 12 to 13 hours a day like a normal person. I love this up side effect. How long can I continue to take this medicine if I am not interested in losing more weight? I have taken other medications in order to stay awake but phentermine has had the least side effects. (Even though this is not what it is prescribed for)
Kim
AskDocWeb: Long term use of Phentermine has not been studied, possibly because Phentermine is habit forming, both physically and psychologically. If you use it continuously for several weeks, you may experience withdrawal effects if you stop taking it suddenly. Talk to your doctor about how you should go about stopping this medication.
Subj: Missouri
Date: 6/13/2004
I need an online pharmacy that will ship phentermine to Missouri. Can you help me?
Larry
AskDocWeb: Sorry Larry, you seem to live in one of those states where drugstores don’t tolerate competition. They made it illegal to ship to Missouri. You might want to ask yourself, did you vote for the people who passed that law?
Subj: Losing effect
Date: 6/17/2004
I have been on phentermine for 7 weeks now and I have so far lost 18 pounds. When I first started taking them I had to force myself to eat and I had no desire for anything sweet at all, I have noticed within the last 2 1/2 weeks, that I don’t have the same effects, now it seems like I am wanting sweets and I eat, but when I do eat I get full really quickly, I am taking 30 mg. Is there a reason for this and is there anything I can do to get the first effects back.
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: This is something you need to talk with your doctor about because when your body builds up a tolerance, it loses it’s effectiveness. Phentermine is habit forming and you should not stop taking it without first talking to your doctor.
Subj: Psychologically dependent
Date: 6/17/2004
I have taken phentermine on and off for about 4 years. The first time I went on it I lost about 35 pounds and kept it off for about a year. I haven’t been able to do it sense. I lose a few pounds and then gain it back. I have decided (tonight) that I am going to lose weight the healthy way. I can’t stay on this stuff the rest of my life! I told my husband to HIDE it from me because I know I am psychologically dependent on it. I hope I can do it on my own!

Subj: Really bad side effects
Date: 6/19/2004
I was taking phentermine for about two weeks, when I started to get really bad side effects from it. I was driving to my routine physical when suddenly while driving, I had chest pains, difficulty breathing (asthmatic anyway), felt VERY hot, rapid heart rate, numbness on my left arm, nervousness and literally felt like I was going to black out! It was really frightening but I blasted the air conditioner to cool myself down, took slow deep breaths and just tried to force myself to relax. I sensed it was related to my phentermine use because I have read on the potential side effects. I was so anxious about feeling the chest pains that it could have easily triggered a slight “panic attack.” I’m not sure what panic attacks feel like, but every symptom I felt while I was driving freaked me out.
I managed to make it to the physical and told the nurse what I just experience on my way over there. She checked my blood pressure and it surprisingly was normal. I informed her that I was on phentermine and she said that usually it will raise your blood pressure but not cause chest pain. I made it through the physical and decided to drive myself to the emergency room. I knew I should have contacted someone to take me, but I just risked driving on my own. Surprisingly, made it there and immediately they gave me an EKG and took my blood pressure. It was slightly elevated since the physical exam and my EKG results indicated some arrhythmia, but nothing serious. I indicated to the doctor that I had been on phentermine for 2 weeks and he did not believe that my phentermine use was related to my physical symptoms (weird!), since I believed it to be the phentermine.
Chest x-rays were taken and blood tests were done and all checked out to be normal. The doctor gave me toradol through my IV, then Valium to make me more comfortable. The Valium truly helped. There was one blood test done called a d-dymers test that came out positive and the doctor believed that I may have a blood clot in my lungs. A cat scan was done and no clot was seen. I had a follow up with a doctor the following day and he too did not believe that my symptoms were related to the phentermine (weird).
Anyways, I am no longer taking the phentermine after taking it for 13 days straight. I am still experiencing some chest pain and numbness on my left arm, even after stopping the phentermine. I imagine the phentermine may still be in my system and hoping it’ll go away in time. I am feeling very tired, restless, and all those other horrible side effects from ceasing the phentermine so abruptly. The doctor from my follow-up appointment suggested I stop the phentermine even though he did not believe it was related to my chest pains. I am wondering if my physical symptoms were related to my phentermine use? I will never take appetite suppressants again, but need to know if these symptoms will eventually disappear since I stopped use for a few days now. Thanks for your help in this matter.
Malia
AskDocWeb: It may seem weird but it does not sound like your symptoms were caused by the Phentermine. Whether or not the symptoms disappear depends on their cause so check with your doctor.
Subj: Just one week!
Date: 6/21/2004
I have been on phentermine for about a week and have gone from 45 inches in my waist to 43 inches.

Subj: Long term usage?
Date: 6/23/2004
I have been taking 30mg of Phentermine for about a year now and I am concerned about the damage the pills could do to my body. Is there any known side effects from being on this drug for a long period of time? Thank you for any information.
Brandi
AskDocWeb: Phentermine is for short-term use. It is habit forming, both physically and psychologically. Anyone using it continuously for more than a year may experience withdrawal effects if you stop taking it suddenly. Talk to your doctor about alternatives and how you should go about stopping this medication.
Subj: Lost 20 pounds, but
Date: 6/27/2004
I am a 20 year old female and my weight was about 155 and I was 5 foot 4 or so. Well, I got an online prescription for phentermine 30mg. I took it for 6 weeks and lost about 20 pounds! I got off the pills about a week ago and am going through terrible withdrawal symptoms such as extreme extreme tiredness, depression, need for more pills, extreme hunger pains, hair has started falling out while taking medication, shaking and sleeping 12 – 13 hours a night! I would like to take more pills but I do feel that they are very addictive. Plus I didnt need to lose much weight anyways. So if you are not very overweight go a different route for sure.

Subj: Blood in stool
Date: 6/28/2004
I have been taking phentermine for 8 weeks. I have lost 23 lbs. but I have been noticing blood in my stool…not just a little, but more than enough. Is this a side effect? I have looked on many websites but haven’t seen that it has been a problem.
Robyn
AskDocWeb: Blood in the stool is not listed among the side effects for Phentermine. Sounds like you should visit your doctor to find out what is going on.
Subj: Discolored stool
Date: 7/2/2004
Has anyone had a bloody or discolored stool while taking Phentermine?
Kevin
AskDocWeb: A bloody stool is something you should immediately report to your doctor. You may want to have a colonoscopy to see what is causing the bleeding.
Subj: Leg pain
Date: 7/4/2004
I have been taking this phentermine for about 10 days. I started getting extreme leg pains almost unbearable & unable to sleep because of the pain. They are not swollen they just ache. Have you ever heard of this? Thanks,
Susan
AskDocWeb: We have not heard of leg pain resulting from Phentermine. We suggest you talk to your doctor about what other medications you may be taking, and other possible causes for this.
Subj: Upset over 40lbs
Date: 7/10/2004
I recently stopped taking Lexapro with the permission of my psychopharmachologist. I told him I simply was too upset over the 40lbs that I had gained while being on the medication. I am currently taking Topomax (200mg) at bedtime as it has as a side effect a weight loss component. I was taking this in combination with the lexapro. I also take 1mg of Klonopin at bedtime as well. In the morning, I take 150mg of Wellbutrin SR and 1mg of Propecia. Can I take 15mg of Phetermine to assist me in the beginning stages of shedding this weight. My BMI is in the health rish range. Also, can I take creatine before my workout (without the loading phase) as I am combining cardio with weight training and have had very positive results with creatine in the past before anti-depressants robbed me of the energy to workout. Thanks!
Brian
AskDocWeb: Sounds like you have a lot going on right now. Our best suggestion would be for you to find a doctor that specializes in sports medicine to help you out.
Subj: Problem with bad breath
Date: 7/20/2004
I have been on Phentermine for about a month. I have gone from 185 to 163. I have noticed a problem with bad breath. I have never had this problem before is it because of the medication? If so, what can I do to stop it? Thanks A Lot!
January
AskDocWeb: Although many drugs cause bad breath, it was not listed in the side effects we found for Phentermine. You may find an answer in the Bad Breath Bible. It’s free.
Subj: Asenlix
Date: 7/26/2004
I am currently taking Phentermine. I don’t feel it is working as good as it did when I started it. Does asenlix work the same way? Is it dangerous? Are there any people out there that can tell me their experiences with it (Asenlix)?
Jennifer
Subj: Lost only 5 pounds
Date: 8/10/2004
I have been taking Phentermine for nearly a month now and have only lost 5 pounds. I am beginning to wonder if my pills are legit. I looked up Phentermine A 258 online, but nothing comes up. Is this capsule a true phentermine type?
Jamie
AskDocWeb: Look on the container for the strength of your pills. The usual adult dose is 37.5mg but it also comes in 15mg and 30mg strengths. You may have one of the weaker versions or it could be a counterfeit depending on where it was purchased. Remember that Phentermine works best if you are eating a healthy diet and maintaining a good exercise program.
Subj: Withdrawal symptom of Phentermine
Date: 8/12/2004
I’ve been on a small dose (15mg) of Phentermine off and on since Nov of last year. This last round of taking the med consistently has been approx. 2 months. Today I didn’t take my pill and I’m awfully dizzy. Is that a withdrawal symptom and would I get that side effect from not taking it only 1 day?
Lara
AskDocWeb: Yes, Phentermine can make you dizzy. This is something that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Phentermine and heart problems
Date: 9/14/2004
Hi, I just started taking phentermine 2 days ago. I remember a couple of years ago they banned fen-phen…does phentermine by itself produce the same heart problems as the combination drugs did? I have mitral valve prolapse (slight case I do not have to take medication) and curious about any side effects of this drug (my doctor said it was safe) just wondering if it is???
Cheri
AskDocWeb: Phentermine causes elevation of blood pressure, faster heart rate and stimulates the nervous system like the amphetamines. Please read the warnings on our about Phentermine page. Read more feedback from users.
