Subj: Heart palpitations
Date: 11/5/2008
I developed heart palpitations while on diet phentermine shortly after I started to take the medication. I did consult doctor about it. He said that if palpitations didnt stop to discontinue the medication. It has been 7 days since I have taken medication, but know my heart rate is actually beating faster now than when on med’s. I have had 3 EKG’s done, all normal and an Echocardiogram, which was normal. Is the palpitations a common side effect or not. And how long will it take for drug to be out of system? I only took med for a month and lost 20 pounds. My palpitations would only happen at night once I went to bed, Never during the day. Thank-you for comment.
Regina
AskDocWeb: It may take three or four weeks for the Phentermine to completely leave your system after discontinuing.
Subj: Lexapro and Phentermine
Date: 11/7/2008
I have seen several comments where you state it is not safe to mix Lexapro and Phentermine but I have recently been prescribed 10 mg of Lexapro and had already been taking Phentermine. I asked my doctor if the mix was okay and she said yes.
Hawaii
AskDocWeb: If Phentermine is taken with an anti-depressant there is a potential for complications like serotonin syndrome, a potentially lethal condition that is caused by excessive serotonergic activity. In your case it sounds like your doctor has determined that the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Subj: Withdraw symptoms
Date: 11/7/2008
I have been taking phentermine for almost 3 years. I have tried to stop but the withdraw symptoms are so severe that I end up taking them again (oh 37.5 is the dosage of the pill but my doctor tells me to take 1 whole pill in the morning and 1/2 pill around lunch time)(I get up at 3:45AM to go to work…Long day) Anyway I have stopped the 1/2 pill but I do have lots of the side effects that are mentioned here. When I stop the phentermine the side effects also decrease. Some of the things I have experienced are:
1. Headaches
2. Dry Mouth and burning of the tongue…I drink 7-8 16oz Bottles of water per day!!
3. Bladder problems…seeing a urologist for this
4. Fingers going numb especially at night.
5. shoulder/knee pain
6. hands and toes cold all the time
7. Severly Dry Skin
8. Mood Swings
9. Sleeplessness/insomina
10. Racing heart/my heart gets out of rhytm and feels like it stops but its actually adding an extra beat.
I had a cariologist take a look done an EKG cause I thought I was having a heart attack. These are the things I experience while taking the pills. When I try to stop I feel like I have the flu. I can’t rest I feel sick to my stomach. My head hurts so bad that I cover my eyes because of light makes my head hurt even worse. So all you out there that think this is the GREAT EASY SOLUTION you’ve been searching for trust me….the only way I would do this again is if my life was in jeopardy due to the extra weight and then I would probaly elect gastric bypass…it has harmful outcomes sometimes but so does PHENTERMINE!! Oh one more thing I did not take 1 1/2 pills the whole 3 years only started doing that the last 6-8 weeks but now I only take one (37.5) pill a day…Good Luck to all. I hope this helps someone out there make the right decision and steer clear of this very addictive drug!!

Subj: Blood in stools?
Date: 11/9/2008
Is it possible that for those with blood in their stools…phentermine can cause constipation and the blood may be from hemorrhoids or small tear as the hardened stool struggles to come out of the rectum? This is happening to me as well, but I am absolutely certain it’s due to the more difficulty I am having in passing stools. I too have been experiencing slight tightening of the chest just recently after having been on phentermine for 10 days, with the first few days being a 1/2 dose (approved by my doctor to introduce my body to it.)
KY_girl
AskDocWeb: Yes, hardened stools may cause small tears in the wall of the rectum.
Subj: Hair loss
Date: 11/9/2008
I took phentermine (30 mg) for 4 days this last summer. I lost 10 lbs. I was forcing myself to eat. My big problem was hair loss. It has taken 3 months to get the hair loss problem under control. I am back on it under drs. advice now taking 15 mg. It is working alot better for me – so far know hair loss.

Subj: Breastfeed my baby?
Date: 11/11/2008
I have just started taking phen 37.5 but I break them in half cause I get headacks I have only done it 4 two days I want to stop and breastfeed my baby again how long should I wait to do that? Thanks,
Tammy
AskDocWeb: Phentermine can stay in the body for up to a month after discontinuing. Breast feeding while taking Phentermine should be discussed with your doctor.
Subj: Numbness
Date: 11/11/2008
Phentermine causes me to get numb on my check and lip after I take it. I know others have experienced this, but I want to know how long it takes until this side effects go away and if it is a sign of something dangerous? I need to lose 60 lbs and am 5’6. It has happened to me before but my doctor put me on the 30 instead of 37.5. The only problem is you can’t cut the 30 in half like the 37.5. I am afraid to start the new pill until I know if this numbness a temporary issue. I assume the manufactor has examined it since so many report this side effect on blogs and sites like this.
Kay
AskDocWeb: Any numbness that occurs after taking a drug should be reported to your doctor. Too little is known about this to tell if it will go away or not with continued use. The manufacturer may have examined this issue but we have yet to see a response to it.
Subj: Phentermine with naproxen?
Date: 11/10/2008
Can phentermine be taken with naproxen 500mg?
Jada
AskDocWeb: The PDR lists no drug interactions for using Phentermine with naproxen.
Subj: Itching and bloated
Date: 11/12/2008
I was just wondering…. I just started taking the Phentermine 37.5 and I am wondering if it could cause severe itching on your palms of your hand and the top of my feet? Also can it cause my body to feel like I am bloated? Thanks
Sadie
AskDocWeb: Itching may or may not be accompanied by a rash but it should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible as it is a common symptom of an allergic reaction.
Subj: Making progress with low dosage
Date: 11/12/2008
I’ve been taking phentermine for 3 months now. But, my doctor started me out on 7 mil. Starting on a low dosage seems to work better for me. But, everyone is different. I was 140 lbs., now I’m 125. I do take lexapro, but I take 1/4 of a 10 mil. tablet (use a pill splitter). Since they are not suppose to be cut in half, can cause heartburns, I put the split pill into an empty capsule, then take it. I feel great.

Subj: Fighting off an infection
Date: 11/12/2008
I’ve been on Phentermine 30mg for about 2 weeks now. My doc advised me to not eat anything except dinner. Is that normal? When I told him that I get hungry during the day (even with having a little something) he upped my dose, so now I take 30mg in the morning and 15 mg in the afternoon if I need it. I lost 7 lbs in the first 6 days, which was great, but I’m having a lot of side effects. Here’s my list of side effects: tiredness, loss of energy, dizziness, dry mouth, increased hair loss, irritability, overall blah feeling, zoning out. Are all of these normal? I had trouble sleeping the first couple of nights, but now I’m sleeping great. I feel tired all the time. If it’s all because of the Phentermine, then I don’t want to continue taking it, but I also just got over a sinus infection. I’m still on antibiotics. How can I tell if it’s the diet pill causing all these side effects or my body fighting off an infection?
Karen
AskDocWeb: When the symptoms are the same, there isn’t any way to tell. If the symptoms become a concern then check with your doctor.
Subj: Bladder problem
Date: 11/12/2008
I’ve been on Phentermine for 2 weeks now, and I have noticed that I don’t have to urinate as often even though I’m drinking lots of water. Ever since my son was born (2+ yrs ago) I’ve had the “gotta go” feeling all the time. Kegel’s didn’t help, and my ob-gyn said we’d probably have to fix the problem with surgery someday. Is it possible that the Phentermine is helping this bladder problem?
Karen
AskDocWeb: Yes, and that is the kind of help that one doesn’t need. Difficulty urinating is one of the possible side effects of taking Phentermine.
Subj: Capsules make a big difference
Date: 11/12/2008
I posted a little while ago, and just wanted to repeat something I wrote about earlier. If you break a caplet into, make sure you put it in a capsule (get them @ healthfood store) If you break them and take them that way, the contents empty into your stomach to fast, and you can get shakey, and a little aggitated. (Plus heartburns) I experienced this myself. I always put them in a capsule now. I enjoy staying awake, when at my computer at work. Used to have a very hard time staying awake. Also with driving, now I’m awake and alert. I’m more extroverted also. I feel really great. My doctor monitors everything. Blood tests, once a month and all that. Hope everyone does as good as I am doing on it. Remember, the capsules make a big difference.

Subj: Side effects
Date: 11/19/2008
I just started phentermine about 5 days ago and have all the listed side effects and a constant feeling of pressure in the eyes. Could this be the phentermine? And will it go away?
Christy
AskDocWeb: The side effects that may go away during use are dry mouth, unpleasant taste in your mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, stomach upset, and constipation. These sometimes occur as your body adjusts to the Phentermine. If you have all the listed side effects then you need to report them to your doctor.
Subj: Chest pain
Date: 12/3/2008
I Started taking phenteramine 2 weeks ago. Just 3 days ago I started feeling a pain or feeling in between my breasts in my chest. Do you think it will go away?
Elda
AskDocWeb: Chest pain is one of the side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Only lost 4lbs.
Date: 12/4/2008
I have read so many success stories on the weight loss from phentermine. I have been on it for 4 weeks and have only lost 4lbs. I can’t tell it is doing anything for me. I am 42 years old. What could I be doing wrong? Please help,
Penny
AskDocWeb: It may be the type of food, the quantity of food, or a lack of exercise. You’ll have to have a talk with your doctor in order to find out.
Subj: High blood pressure and heart rate
Date: 12/8/2008
I have been taking Phentermine for about 3 weeks and my heart rate is 110 and blood pressure running 130/100 or higher. I stopped taking it for 5 days now and my pressure and HR are still not normal. Did I cause damage to myself or what? How long will this last?
Asha
AskDocWeb: This is one of the side effects that should be reported to your doctor. It may take up to a month for the Phentermine to completely leave your system after discontinuing. Read more feedback from users.
