Subj: For desperation weight loss
Date: 9/17/2004
I started taking Phentermine 7 weeks ago. I think I am an extreme case, but I’ve experienced insomnia, feeling really “out of it” mood swings, and severe anxiety. I just recovered from a spout of 72 hours constipation, and it’s been the most uncomfortable time I’ve had in a long time. I have lost weight, and it’s helped with forming a better eating style in my life, so I am continue the medication for a couple more weeks. It really makes you get your body together to loose weight. if you can handle side effects then it’s not a bad drug for desperation in weight loss… Your truly…

Subj: Chest pains with phentermine
Date: 9/20/2004
I have been taking phentermine for 2 weeks now and I have lost approximately 9 pounds already. I am very satisfied with the results, however, just today I began experiencing chest pains and stomach cramps. I am a little worried that something may be wrong, so I am going to my doctor first thing in the morning. I am not sure if the chest pains and stomach cramping is a normal side effect, but it has placed some doubt in my mind. I do not want to stop the pills until I reach my target weight, but is it worth my health?? I know most people will say that your health is most important, and I agree, but I am considering that maybe the chest pains will just go away and I can continue with my pills.

Jess

AskDocWeb: Glad to hear you are going to the doctor about those chest pains. Some people who ignore their chest pains and hope that they will “just go away” get what they hope for, but not the way they want. Even mild chest pains can be life threatening.

Subj: How long to take a break?
Date: 9/21/2004
I have been taking Phentermine for 30 days now and have lost 15 pounds already. How long should I take a break for before I start it up again. I would like to lose another 15 pounds.

Toni

AskDocWeb: We haven’t found any set time for this purpose. Others have reported taking a break anywhere from a few days to three months.

Subj: Long term effects
Date: 9/24/2004
Hello, I’m a 21 year old female. I began taking phentermine in early 2002. I was never overweight but bought it off the internet to lose some vanity pounds. I took it until early 2004 when it became illegal to buy in the state I reside in. I never took more than one 37.5 mg tab a day. The effects were great at first, no appetite and lots of energy excluding the irritability I experienced for the 1st week. I lost the weight I wanted to lose but continued to take the drug to ‘maintain’ my desired weight. The good effects of the drug wore off after a month or so of using it.

From my own personal long-term experience with this drug I feel it has ruined my life. It has taken a piece of me I feel I can never get back again. I do not have drug seeking behavior, but I am addicted to this drug. I crave it on a daily basis. Since I stopped taking phentermine my short term memory is very bad now and it is hard to concentrate. My metabolism I also believe has been ruined by this drug. I diet, eat right and exercise but I keep gaining weight. I am severely depressed and it is extremely hard to get motivated to do anything anymore. In short, I would not recommend this drug to anyone unless you absolutely need it and it is prescribed to you by your doctor, not an online form. It is an expensive habit and it is not worth it for a few vanity pounds, the long term effects are devastating in the end.

Subj: Back where I started
Date: 10/4/2004
I have over the years taken phentermine and have always lost my weight. The problem is every time I go off after a few months I’m back where I started from, like now. I not sure if taking pills is the answer it really is only masking the real issues. Help!

Pam

AskDocWeb: You are correct. Just taking a pill is not the answer to weight control. You have to make changes to your diet and increase your physical activity at the same time.

Subj: Stopping phentermine
Date: 10/14/2004
I’ve been taking 37.5 phentermine for about 4 weeks now. I have lost about 20 pounds, however, feel it is unhealthy and I wish to get off. The symptoms I am feeling are light headedness, dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, nausea, and tightness in my chest. I have cut back to 1/2 a pill over the last week and will stop altogether tomorrow. I am hoping I will be fine as my doctor can’t see me until next Saturday. I don’t think I will take this ever again.

Subj: Phentermine side effects?
Date: 10/22/2004
I am bothered by a swelling in the inside of my mouth and the back of my throat is scratchy and it is hard to swallow. I also have peeling of the inside of the mucus membrane of my mouth. Is this a side effect? Also a metal taste in my mouth.

Debbie

AskDocWeb: The swelling and difficulty in swallowing are signs of problems that may need immediate medical attention. Your dosage may need to be reduced or you may be having serious complications. See your doctor ASAP.

Subj: PPHD and Phentermine
Date: 10/24/2004
Hi. I was wondering if you have any information on PPHD…the hypertension of the lungs….and if it has any association with taking phentermine. My PCP told me the risk of getting PPHD from phentermine is less than 1%. Have you seen or found any relation? Thanks,

Trisha

AskDocWeb: No, we haven’t. Maybe one of our readers can comment on this.

Subj: Phentermine and hives
Date: 11/18/2004
Hi, I took Phentermine for 4 days and then got hives all over my body. I stopped taking the medicine, and I still had the hives for about a week. Do you think I was allergic to the medicine or something else? I don’t know if I should try taking it again or not.

Buffy

AskDocWeb: Probably not, and it is unwise to make this decision on your own. Phentermine is a prescription drug and you should be in the care of a medical professional when taking this drug. Please talk to your doctor about this.

Subj: Back pain with Phentermine?
Date: 11/30/2004
I have been taking phentermine for about a week now, already lost 5 lbs and feeling great with loads of energy (my home has never been so clean and organized). However, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced back pain as a side effect? I know it wasn’t listed, and I did read one other person’s feed back stating yes, but they also had tummy pain, which I don’t. Thanks,

Sarah

Subj: Need help getting off Phentermine
Date: 12/2/2004
I have taken phentermine for 10yrs steady my body has built a high tolerance to it. I can take up to 15 pills a day. I did loose my weight, but please take it for a few weeks only then get off for a few weeks. Not only is it unhealthy but it is extremely expensive. My husband has no clue that I have this problem and that I have charge cards that he doesn’t know about, maxed out. I’m to the point that I have to do something. I cannot afford $250.00 a week anymore. Can someone tell me how to get off them so we don’t loose our beautiful home, I’m also not sure if I can quit (mentally) nor am I sure I can just quit physically.

Sandy

Subj: unbelievable results
Date: 12/4/2004
Well I have been on adipex for 16 days now the first 2 weeks were unbelievable I hardly eat anything! I mean I went from 5 slices of pizza to 5 bites and now I’m full. I don’t have any being tired issues, but I did experience the dry mouth and side effects of extreme diarrhea. I also mixed with alcohol and it made me vomit a few times. I’m starting to feel hungry again for some reason so I think it may be time to stop taking them and start over. I can say I have lost at least 10 lbs in 2 weeks these really are a miracle.

Subj: Grand mall seizures and Phentermine
Date: 12/16/2004
I was diagnosed as an child with seizures (grandmal) it went away ten yrs ago at the age of 30, I’ve gained 4o kgs and I’m 9o kgs, I was 30 when it went away, brain scan was clear. Can I take Phentermine, I’m now 40 yrs of age. Thank you,

from Jessica

AskDocWeb: Although it has gone away for now, you still have a history of a seizure disorder. That means you should check with your doctor first.

Subj: Phentermine withdrawal
Date: 12/20/2004
Hi- I have been taking phentermine for about three months with good success, however, after some discussion regarding personal health issues, my doctor and I decided it was best for me to stop. I stopped about 2-3 days ago and last night I woke up with the worst headache of my life. While I don’t have any tremors, nausea/ vomiting or depression, is it possible that this is from suddenly stopping the phentermine? Thanks for your advice.

Susan

AskDocWeb: Yes, the headache is likely a withdrawal symptom, but the headaches will stop.

Subj: Long-term use of Phentermine?
Date: 12/21/2004
I’ve taken phentermine (30 mg) almost daily for a couple of years. Is it safe to take this medication on an on-going basis? It really reduces my appetite and gives me lots of energy. I plan on taking it for quite awhile longer.. is this okay?

Cindy

AskDocWeb: No, it is not okay. Any long-term use of a diet pill is actually a bad idea. It is only meant for short-term use. The idea is to help you get your weight under control, not to develop a dependency on this drug.

Subj: Phentermine, Red Bull and sore breasts
Date: 12/22/2004
I have been drinking 2 – 3 sugar free red bulls a day along with my phentermine tablet, I have noticed my breasts have been very sore and seem larger than before could this be a side affect from taking the two together.

Tammy

AskDocWeb: We have not heard of these products enlarging your breast size but, drinking Red Bulls while taking phentermine tablets can increase your heart rate and could cause chest pains.

Subj: Phentermine and blood pressure
Date: 1/5/2005
I am currently taking a water pill and I know I will not get this right but HCZTC for blood pressure. My blood pressure since I started exercising and eating a 1000 calorie diet has been outstanding so I know its the weight. It’s been 108/78. I get it taken twice a week at the weight loss center. My doctor prescribed me Phentermine. Is it safe to take with my blood pressure being under control? Thanks,

GB

AskDocWeb: Phentermine can cause hypertension which could present a problem for your blood pressure. It’s a good idea to keep a close watch on it.

Subj: Phentermine and drug testing
Date: 1/5/2005
Can phentermine show up in urinalysis drug testing? I’m in the military and need to know before I start taking the appetite suppressant.

Courtney

AskDocWeb: Phentermine has been reported to show up as a false positive for Amphetamines and Ecstasy on urine tests.

Subj: Feeling hungry more often
Date: 1/8/2005
I have been taking phentermine for 7 weeks and have lost 30lbs! I have noticed that I don’t have as much energy and am feeling hungry more often. I know with time there is less effect with this drug, is an increased dosage from 37.5 something that can be done by the advice of a doctor and is it safe?

Dana

AskDocWeb: Phentermine doesn’t come any stronger than 37.5mg. If that is no longer working then you need to find an alternative.

Subj: Very bad headaches
Date: 1/10/2005
I have been taking phentermine for about 3 weeks, and I am still hungry. I am taking the highest dose and I am wondering what I can do to decrease my appitite. I have also noticed 3 days ago that I am having very bad headaches, is this a side effect?

Claudia

AskDocWeb: Yes, Phentermine can cause moderate to severe hypertension, which in itself may be the cause of your headaches. Read more feedback from users.
