Subj: Dangerous drug
Date: 1/18/2009
I have taken phentermine on and off for about two years. I have a tremendous amount of short term memory loss that is noticeable by everyone in my immediate family and by co-workers. I stopped taking it for a while and symptoms seems to improve in about six months. When I took it again, I notice memory loss again with the addition of blurred vision in my right eye. It feels like there is a blanket that drops over my eye. This is a very dangerous drug. The only other drug I take is Levithyroxin for my thyroid. I seldom drink, do not smoke, and do not do any drugs.

AskDocWeb: Please consult with your doctor about what would be appropriate for your condition. The focus here is on side effects.
Subj: Loss of eye lashes
Date: 1/19/2009
I’ve been taking Phentermine for 2 months. My eye lashes are falling out! Also a blood test came back that ANA count is off. Do you think the eye lashes are from phentermine or antibodies disease? Will the eye lashes come back? Can I do something about it?
kim
AskDocWeb: The list of side effects does not include the loss of eye lashes. You might want to check with an eye doctor about the cause.
Subj: Change in period
Date: 1/21/2009
I have now been takin phentermine for 1 month, I lost 14 pounds, but I changed the way I eat, walk everyday, and stopped drinkin cokes. I drink lots of water, and to get my craving for sugar I drink a glass of sweet tea. BUT, one week after taking this pill, I began my period, and have been on it for 22 days now. I talked to my dr she said to stop my birth control pill a few days then start up again. I did, and it did not change. I stopped taking my diet pill for 2 days and it stopped. SO, my ? is should I get on a lower dose maybe(I’m on 37.5) or try a different birth control pill?
Acat
AskDocWeb: That is something you need to discuss with your doctor. We try to keep the focus here on side effects.

Date: 1/23/2009
I was on phentermine 37.5mg. I have loss of hair from the medician. Will my hair grow back if I stay off the drug?
Racquel
AskDocWeb: Most drug induced hair loss is reversible once the medication is discontinued. And so far, there have been no reports of permanent hair loss with Phentermine.

Subj: Felt great
Date: 1/29/2009
I took phentermine for three months and I lost 30 pds I felt great on it. My doctor told me I had to be off of it for awhile. How long should I be off before going back on? I have tried to keep my food intake down and keep exercising 4 days a week. I need to lose about 40 more pounds and I want to go back on. Can I get it from a website online? Thanks,
Lisa
AskDocWeb: The amount of time you need to take off from using the drug is a variable that only your doctor can determine. While Phentermine may be available online from some countries, we suggest you avoid those websites for these two reasons. First, if you did order online and the packages were clearly marked as drugs then Customs agents at the boarder may confiscate your order. And two, if the packages were not clearly marked with the contents then you could be accused of drug smuggling. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that it is safe or a good idea. Just follow your doctor’s instructions.
Subj: Nervous and shaking arms
Date: 1/29/2009
The dr gave me this medicine yesteday and he said that no problem that I’m taking sybtriod 100mg and hydroxycut to loose weight also. I’m feeling nervous, my arms are shaking and I need to know if I can discontinue the other medicines or this is normal the first days?? Please help me I’m scared.
Ana
AskDocWeb: Phentermineis known to stimulates the nervous system but with your shaking arms (tremors), you should report this to your health care provider and they will advise you if you should continue or not.
Subj: Do pills stop working?
Date: 2/2/2009
I have taken Phentermine 37.5 off and on for the past 2 years. I went from a size 12 to a size 8 & have been an 8 for at least a year. I am not able to get below a size 8 even with the pills. Is there any research that suggests the pills stop working?
Beth
AskDocWeb: Yes, with many anorectic drugs such as Phentermine, the weight loss tends to decrease after a few weeks or months as the body builds up a tolerance for the drug. When that happens there seems to be three possible choices; 1. Increase your activity level, 2. Learn more about nutrition to make better choices, or 3. Consult with your doctor about an alternative to the drug to which the body no longer responds. Of course you can do all three to increase your chances of success.
Subj: Cold feet
Date: 2/4/2009
Can taking phentermine have any side effects such as causing cold feet. It seems like blood flow is not very good getting to my feet.
Kevin
AskDocWeb: No, getting cold feet is not one of the side effects of Phentermine. If it becomes a concern then talk with your doctor about it as it may indicate a lack of circulation.
Subj: Dry mouth and back pain
Date: 2/5/2009
Hi, I have been taking phentermine for 2 days now. the only side affect I’m having is dry mouth. I’m also experiencing back pain with this…is this normal??????
Teresa
AskDocWeb: A few people have reported back pain when taking Phentermine but it is not listed among the “official” side effects. It may or may not be coincidence however, the dry mouth is common.

Subj: Phentermine and laughing gas?
Date: 2/10/2009
I have a dental appointment for a filling. My doctor gives laughing gas to make all visits a little easier to deal with. Should I inform him that I am taking phentermine? Could there be side effects?
Hope
AskDocWeb: It is a good general rule to keep your dentist informed about any prescription drugs you are taking. That way if there are any problems with drug interactions, your dentist will know about it.
Subj: My personality has changed
Date: 2/11/2009
I am another person that is experiencing the “memory loss” effect after taking Phentermine. I began taking it somewhere around the first of November, 2008–and have lost 42 pounds. At first, it was like a dream come true–but now I’m beginning to wonder if it has become my worst nightmare. For the past two weeks–at work, even simple tasks that I could breeze through have become unrealistically complex. It has become very unsettling. Those around me on a daily basis say my personality has changed tremendously–I use to be bubbly and outgoing, and now the least little thing can irritate me. I feel quite depressed most of the time, and can break out in tears at the drop of a hat. I truly want to continue to lose weight, but know that I have never experienced such side-effects until I started taking Phentermine. Is there a supplement one can take to counteract these side effects, or is my only choice to get off this medication ASAP? Thanks for any info you may be able to provide.
Brenda
AskDocWeb: Sorry Brenda, we know of no supplement that would counteract your side effects. Please talk this over with your doctor.
Subj: relief from 30 years of bulimia
Date: 2/11/2009
I also was on phentermine and it was the only relief I ever really got from 30 years of bulimia. I moved and can’t find a doctor who might prescribe it. It is expensive online and I’m afriad it will be a rip off. I’m under a lot of stress and the bulimia is getting out of hand. I know what will bring some relief but I don’t know where to get it.
Krissy
AskDocWeb: One of the signs that doctors watch for that indicates drug abuse is when a patient asks for a specific drug. Just making that request reduces your chances of getting it. Please consider which is more important, is it getting that drug or getting what your doctor thinks would be best for you?
Subj: Phentermine really does work
Date: 2/12/2009
It really does work, a little goes a long way. If I dont take it the next day; however, I am hungrier and overeat, it needs to be used consistently to work.

Subj: The hardest part
Date: 2/13/2009
I used Phentermine a few years ago and had amazing results. In the first month I lost 21lbs and overall lost 30lbs before stopping. I made a huge mistake when taking it last time though, I didn’t change my eating habits. I was just never hungry so I lost weight. In the end I gained all the weight back. I had a baby in the last year and decided to use Phentermine again to lose the extra weight. This time I have changed my eating habits, used Phentermine in cycles, I use it for a month then stop using it for a few weeks and then start again. It is working well for me, and hopefully I will keep the weight off this time because I am changing my eating habits. The drug is VERY addictive, I will say that. The hardest part of going off of Phentermine was not having all of the energy you become accustomed to. If I could find a way to have the same energy level without needing Phentermine that would be great! But other than that, it is a great diet tool.

Subj: More Phentermine side effects
Date: 2/15/2009
I see some common notes about Phentermine, namely dizziness, insomnia, and chest pain or stomach cramps. I don’t know if this is the cause, but I’ll add my information. I’ve been on the drug for 4 months and lost 20 pounds. I’ve also awaken at 1 to 2 o’clock in the morning dozens of times. I’m having trouble with blurred and warped vision. Picture frames look concave rather than square. A retina specialist says that I have liquid trapped between the tissue layers of my retina that is distorting my vision. He keeps asking me if I am taking steroids, or amphetamines or nasal decongestants. I’m not. I am also having extreme cramps at the top wall of my stomach. I wasn’t sure if it was a heart attack or stomach cramps until I pressed around the top side of my stomach. It’s stomach cramps.
