Subj: Not working at all
Date: 2/16/2009
I’ve been using phentermine for a few months, lost 26 lbs, but now its not working at all and I seem to be putting some weight back on. Should I stop taking it and re start it in a few weeks, have I got immune to it?
dawn
AskDocWeb: One of the reasons Phentermine is for short-term use is that the body builds up a tolerance for it and it stops working. Please talk to your doctor about an alternative.
Subj: Autoimmune hepatitis
Date: 2/18/2009
HI, I have very early autoimmune hepatitis. Would this med effect that? Thank you,
buff
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any obvious counterindications but you will need to check with your doctor to find out if it is safe for your condition. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a serious disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the liver.
Subj: I can’t sleep
Date: 2/19/2009
I am taking phentermine for energy, and now I am taking four to five a day. I can’t sleep sometimes, and I am afraid of the damage this can do. I should ad that I am 49.
Carol
AskDocWeb: Feeling more energetic will certainly keep you awake. We suggest you discuss what you want to accomplish with your doctor.
Subj: Phentermine HCL 37.7
Date: 2/19/2009
Phentermine HCL 37.7 is new to me and I wanna try it be I’m afraid.
Jess
AskDocWeb: There is a reason to be afraid, especially for those who should not be taking it. This is something you need to talk over with your doctor to find out if it is safe for you or not.
Subj: Taking a break
Date: 2/22/2009
I have been on for 5 days now and have lost 5 pounds. I take 1/2 in the am and half at like 2:00pm. It is starting not to last as long as it was the first day. Will taking a break for a few days help with that and how long of a break?
Brooke
AskDocWeb: There isn’t a recommended amount of time for taking a break but feedback from others suggest a couple of days up to a week.
Subj: Constipated
Date: 2/23/2009
I have used this drug for 3 weeks and have never been so constipated in my life. I have been really moody, racing thoughts, and can’t sleep at night. I really would not recommend this to anyone.

Subj: Miscarriage
Date: 2/23/2009
I took phetermine for one month, and lost 15 pounds. However, two weeks later I found out I was pregnant. I am currently recovering from a miscarriage, and I strongly believe that the pills had something to do with it. Further testing on that needs to be done.

Subj: Phentermine with Fluconazole?
Date: 2/24/2009
Can I take Phentermine 37.5mg once a day and Fluconazole 100mg once a day?
Amber
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any drug interactions in the database but you should always talk to your doctor first to see if it is safe for you.
Subj: Some side effects
Date: 2/26/2009
I started taking Phentermine 15mg once a day in the morning 1 week ago. I have lost 5 lbs so far. I love it. Some side effects that I have had is the 1st 2 days I was really talkative but that has gone away. It has really helped with my hunger. I have had a dry mouth & been constipated. I am on Seasonique for birth control & I have started spotting since about the 2nd day of taking this drug. I really hope this gets better. Other than spotting, I can so far live with the other side effects.

Subj: Phentermine 37.5
Date: 2/26/2009
I also get very sleepy when I take it. I just had a baby 5 months ago and he gave me phentermine 37.5, to help me lose my baby weight and give me some energy. I use to take it years ago to help loose little weight but I told my doc I need something for energy he gave me that. Well he thought I was crazy when I told him I can take it hrs before bed time [sometime at bed time] and it helps me not to be hungry but it makes me so tired and sleepy. Then a friend of mine said I might have ADAD cause it does the oppoisite. Now after I had my son and its been a over a year not taking it, it would seem I would get some energy from it but I dont. Do you think its ADAD or am I just weird? My husband thinks so cause he takes a half and it wirers him all up, me a whole pill puts me to sleep!!! What’s wrong???
**Tracie**
AskDocWeb: Of course you “could” have ADAD (although they may have meant something else), and you could also be weird, but probably not. It is more likely that your body has built up a tolerance for the drug, some people call it a resistance. That happens with many weight loss drugs and if that is the case then it will not have the intended affect. You will have to find an alternative.
Subj: Started today

I started today made me feel a little funny but I’m gonna give it a chance.

Subj: Pills look different
Date: 3/4/2009
Hello. I have just started taking phentermine 18.5mg today. but my pills look a lot different to the ones my friend has. Mine are white and have no markings on them at all and round (bit like a smartie) does this sound right to you? Also am I suppose to feel any differnt? My friend says they make her go a bit hyper, whereas I feel normal? Thanks for your help.
Emma
AskDocWeb: You can see what the pills should look like here. This is one of the reasons why we recommend getting your prescription filled at your local drugstore, that way you know you are getting the real thing.
Subj: Work better?
Date: 3/4/2009
I took phentermine for a month, how long do I have to wait to take it again, so it could work better?
breaney
AskDocWeb: It is unlikely that Phentermine will work better than it did the first time. One of the reasons why appetite suppressants are only used short-term is that the body builds up a tolerance for them and they stop working.
Subj: The long term effects are not worth the short term benefits
Date: 3/8/2009
I took phentermine after I had my second baby in 2001. I had unbelievable energy and my appetite was almost non-existant. My doc only prescribed for two months, therefore I was on my own after that. I was really fatigued for the following week and felt rather depressed, which may be a common side effect, I do not know. Over the period of 2001-2006, I took phentermine maybe 4 or 5 more times, for 2 month intervals and then go through the withdraw for about a week. When my 3rd baby was a year old, I took phentermine again, only this time had very different results. My mouth was so dry that my tongue literally had cracks in it and I had sores on my gums. I had the worst headaches, almost feeling like my head would explode. I also had extremely blurred vision. My fingers began going numb and I had chest pains. I now have hypertension because of the use of phentermine. The weight loss is quick, the energy is awesome, but the long term effects are not worth the short term benefits. I do not recommend taking this.

Subj: Having a reaction?
Date: 3/10/2009
I just realized I am having a reaction to my Phentermine – not from taking it, from not taking it. I usually take it after I get to work at around 9:30am. In the mornings I always wake up with blurred (double) vision. I have been to an opthalmologist and after hours of testing over two days, he could find no problems. I told him my vision starts out like this in the morning then seems to clear up after a few hours. Well, last week I was sick, so I didn’t take the Phentermine at all. The blurred vision was getting worse and worse until I could barely see while driving to work yesterday morning. I made another appt. with the opthalmologist. I took half a pill in the afternoon, and have just now realized that my vision is completely clear! I haven’t even had my usual morning blurriness. What is happening?
S.
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have something going on unrelated to the Phentermine but it might take a complete physical to find the cause.
Subj: Phentermine AND Meridia?
Date: 3/10/2009
I was very happy with Phentermine 37.5 -lost about 40 lbs. over 40 months. Went back to bad habits gained about 20 back. I am working hard in the gym again, have not taken Phentermine for about a month, and want to start again. My doctor prescribed Meridia and I want to know if Phentermine and Merida can be taken together. Thanks for any input you may have.
Shellie
AskDocWeb: A few people have tried that but they report having much better results with phentermine alone.
Subj: Lost over 65 pounds on Phentermine
Date: 3/11/2009
I lost over 65 pounds on Phentermine. I weigh 185 and used to weigh 250. I had kept the weight off for 2 years and have taken Phentermine again when some of the weight I gained back after not exercising so much and am back down to 185. I think it is effective if combined with exercise.

Subj: Candidate for Phentermine?
Date: 3/13/2009
I am 5’3″ and I weigh between 155 and 160. Am I a candidate for Phentermine?
MICHELLE
AskDocWeb: There are exceptions but generally your BMI has to be 30 or higher. At your current BMI, you have an increased risk for a variety of illnesses so should probably lose weight by changing your diet and exercising more.
Subj: Long term affects of phentermine
Date: 3/15/2009
What are the long term affects of taking 37.5mg of phentermine 3x’s daily. This individual has been on this dose for 14 months. Her Beginning BMI was 21 and she has only lost a total of 1.8lbs and has a current BMI of 20.8. She is also taking .0125mg of synthroid due to a TSH level of 6.275.
Diana
AskDocWeb: No long term affects of Phentermine are noted because this drug is only a short-term treatment. Potential affects you might watch for include abnormal behavior, aggressiveness, heart problems, panic attacks and seizures.
Subj: High blood pressure
Date: 3/16/2009
I have moderately high blood pressure. However, I have taken phentermine off and on for the past year. Can I take blood pressure medication and phentermine at the same time? Also, if I do take these together what would be the side effects?
Beth
AskDocWeb: You may or may not be able to safely take Phentermine when you have hypertension. The known benefits have to be weighed against the possible risks and only your doctor can do that for you.
Subj: I love it
Date: 3/20/2009
I have used it for the past year and lost almost 20 lbs. I usually take half a pill mid-day and that sustains my hunger which for me is more in the evening hours so it has really helped. I love it.

Subj: Early period?
Date: 3/24/2009
I’m just wondering if phentermine could cause me to start my period early. I am very regular…every 28 days. I know exactly when I’ll start my period. It’s been this way since I started my period 15 years ago; but this month I started 4 days early. I took phentermine a year ago for about 4 months and never had this problem. I started taking it again a week ago and now my period is early. Just curious if this could be a side effect.
