Subj: Side affects if I stop taking it?
Date: 4/14/2009
Taking phentermine 37.5 for 10 days. Will I have side affects if I stop taking it?

Mabankie

AskDocWeb: It is unlikely that anyone would have side effects from discontinuing after such a short period of time. Withdrawal effects are only a possibility if you use it continuously for several weeks.

Subj: Will it show up on a drug test?
Date: 4/15/2009
Well I just ordered it and I wanted to know I’m a school bus driver will I be able to take it and do my job and also will it show up on a drug test?

Lentine

AskDocWeb: It may show up on a drug test but as long as you have a prescription for the Phentermine then you are covered.

Subj: Menstrual cycle
Date: 4/18/2009
I have been taking precription phentermine and still awaiting my menstrual cycle. Is this normal?

Pasha

AskDocWeb: There are several posts by women who have noticed changes in menstruation while taking Phentermine including spotting and a missed period. If your period doesn’t start the following month, talk with your doctor.

Subj: Color of capsules?
Date: 4/19/2009
My question is I was taking phentermine bought over the counter from a weight loss doctor, they were yellow. Due to drug testing issues, I had to get a actual prescription and once filled they were blue and clear capsules. I have not got the same effect on the prescription ones as I did from the Dr.’s office does it matter who the manufacturer is? I liked the yellow ones better.

Hope

AskDocWeb: The different dosages come in different colors and forms, capsules and pill form. It seems likely that the sample you got from your doctor may have been a different dosage. When pills are made by more than one manufacturer they may come in different colors. Sometimes generics are exactly the same and sometimes they are “brand equivalent”, which allows some difference in bioavailability. Some doctors have complained that this difference can be up to plus or minus 20%.

Subj: Blurry vision
Date: 4/24/2009
Hi I have been on phentermine 11 days now… if I don’t take it on time I get pressure in my head… I have also noticed that my vision gets blurry now and at night its harder to focus on signs… I want to stop and hope that my vision is restored…

Alexandra

AskDocWeb: Blurred vision is one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Nausea and back stomach ache
Date: 4/26/2009
I’ve been on phentrimine since Thursday and Friday night I had the vomiting feel and back stomach ache. What can I do to help me get threw the first few days of this? My Dr put me on a high protein 1000-1200 calorie diet and no sugar more than 10 grams a day. I feel like it’s morning sickness. I just need some advice to get threw work tomorrow. I’ll take any advice thanks,

Brandi

AskDocWeb: Using any kind of stimulants such as coffee, cola, or tea may add to your stomach upset. An over-the-counter aid like Pepto Bismol may provide some relief.

Beth

AskDocWeb: There have been a couple of reports of gums and teeth aching but dental problems are not listed among the possible side effects.

Subj: My advice
Date: 5/3/2009
I’ve used phentermine for about 4 years, off & on. When prescribed by my Dr., I was told to take it 3-days-on and then skip a day (but maintain strict eating and exercise habits for that “off” day). Great med. Reputable Drs won’t prescribe indefinitely, so I turned to internet. Very expensive, and you’re never really sure of what you’re getting. I’ve received obvious placebos and I’ve also received the real thing – but I did have a bout with severe headaches for about 6 weeks with one internet supplier. My advice (which I’m following now) is stick with your personal Dr., use the 3-days-on & 1-day-off method – and make up your mind to use it as a SHORT-TERM TOOL to change your habits.

Subj: Depressed and sad all time
Date: 5/3/2009
I have been taking phentermine for about 3 months now, at age 7 I was diagnosed with ADHD. Its been about 2 full years since I have taken any medication for it. I can remember as a child feeling depressed when I took my medication and when I didn’t take it I was very happy. Ever since I have been taking phentermine I have felt very depressed and sad all time…crying more than usual. Is this normal?

Kim

AskDocWeb: A few people have reported depression while using Phentermine but it is not normal so talk to your doctor.

Subj: The downside
Date: 5/1/2009
I’ve just started back taking phentermine recently. I’ve been on it a couple of times before. I lost 40 pounds in four months on it the last time I took it. I like the energy it gives me, but unfortunately I get immune to it pretty quick. The downside are the side effects. I have short term memory loss and it makes my head just feel kind of “cloudy”. and it has been making me feel extremely irritable lately. I’m up one minute and down the next. I had surgery recently so I had to stop phentermine 2 weeks beforehand and when I had my lab work done before the surgery, the doctor said my potassium was low, and that it is probably from the diet pills. He said it will do that in some people and that could lead to heart trouble later on. Why would phentermine make my potassium low?

Nikki

AskDocWeb: It seems that many diet pills affect the potassium level but this is easily compensated by the use of a potassium supplement. The symptoms of low potassium or hypokalemia are muscle weakness and cramps that are not associated with exercise. Several rare kidney and adrenal gland disorders may also cause low potassium levels.

Subj: Haven’t had a period in months
Date: 5/4/2009
I’ve been taking this for a few months. Does this have any side effects with growth hormone and I haven’t had a period in months, but all test are neg, is that from the growth or phentermine?

Sara

AskDocWeb: There are many reports of Phentermine causing menstrual changes including spotting and missed periods. If you miss more than one period you should talk with your doctor.

Subj: Dry mouth, skin irritated, dry, and peeling
Date: 5/6/2009
I have been taking phentermine for over four weeks, what I have noticed is that my mouth get very dry and my skin is getting irritated dry, and now peeling. I have never have this problem before taking this medication. Can you tell me if this is a possible side effect and if I should stop taking this medication. I am happy with my current weight loss of twelve pounds in one month.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: Dry mouth seems to be a common side effect of Phentermine. Although skin conditions such as rash, irritation, or peeling are not listed as side effects several people have reported them.

Subj: Immobilizing muscle cramps
Date: 5/9/2009
I’ve read through a few of the pages and haven’t yet seen a comment on my particular reaction/symptom. I’d like to ask if it is a result of taking this medication. I’ve been experiencing toe cramps…I know that sounds a little humorous but it’s absolutely not. I will get them at work so severely that I have to take off my shoe wherever I am when it happens and physically pull my toes in the opposite direction of the direction the cramp is pulling/cramping. It’s becoming overwhelmingly more avid in occurrence and painful…and now, even after holding my foot in a position to keep my toes from curling under and cramping…it will continue to happen immediately after I let go. It’s immobilizing. I’ve read this can also be a result of not getting enough calcium but I’ve ruled that out, as I’ve increased my intake consistently over the passed 2 months. So….Can Phentermine cause immobilizing muscle cramp/spasm/constriction…and if so, why would it only be in my feet? Additionally, because this drug is ‘stimulating’, if you will, it keeps me from falling asleep easily, therefore, I also take xanax before bed. Could the combination of these two drugs, in addition to an oral birth control be the reason my toes are cramping? Thanks-

Cara

AskDocWeb: It is not the combination of the two drugs. Cramps of any kind are not listed as a side effect of Phentermine but Xanax causes muscle cramps in 2.4% of the people using it.

Subj: Trouble sleeping
Date: 5/9/2009
I have been taking Phentermine for two days now and last night I had trouble sleeping will this go away????

Shanna

AskDocWeb: Typically this goes away as your body adjusts to the Phentermine. The patient insert says not to take it late in the day. Taken too late in the day can cause insomnia.

Subj: Constipation
Date: 5/9/2009
I’m 73 and the only way I can lose weight is with a pill/tablet that keeps me from being hungry because I have several chronic ailments that prevent me from being physically able to do exercises or hard work that would take the weight off. Phentermine has been a blessing to me. I not only lost the weight (over 20 lbs.) the weight loss helped my blood pressure and Cholesterol plus it gave me some much needed energy. I had one side effect; CONSTIPATION!!! But, I learned to take 1/2 measuring cap of milk of magnesia in the morning and drink a glass of water with fiber mixed in it. At night I took a powder laxative called MiraLAX also mixed with water and I drank plenty of water. I think Phentermine is a blessing to people in my position.

Subj: Almost at my goal weight
Date: 5/10/2009
Hi, When I started taking Phentermine, my BMI was 30. It has been 6 months, and now my BMI is a 24. I am almost at my goal weight. Is it okay for me to take it for a couple of more months? My doctor will prescribe it, but I just want to be sure it is safe. Thanks!

Carrie

AskDocWeb: If it wasn’t safe then your doctor would not prescribe it.

Subj: Itching and sleep problems
Date: 5/12/2009
I am on Phentermine one week and I have lost 10 pounds without major exercise. I don’t like the feeling like my brain is being squeezed. I am starting to itch as well. I too like others have problems with sleep. Even Ambien doesn’t work. I finally took a .50 Zanax and two benedryl and slept ok. I am on a two day capsule regiment. One 37 mg and one 15 in the afternoon. I am afraid to stop the afternoon dose as I read it peaks within 5 hours, and I am afraid I will eat too much. Please reply. Thank you.

Charlotte

AskDocWeb: The itching and sleep problems should be reported to your health care provider. Sometimes side effects are an indication that a dosage adjustment may be necessary. Read more feedback from users.
