Subj: drug induced Lupus?
Date: 5/13/2009
I am looking at this discussion, and I know it is very old but wanted to respond to the person who wrote back in May of 2005 re: the rash. I too have been taking Phentermine 37.5 for about 10 years and before this Ephedrine for about 10 years. I am now 38 and the phentermine no longer works. Although I still take it so I can stay awake. However, about 3 months ago I too had a rash start on my arms, upper legs and two on my butt. It won’t go away, does spread, and is ugly. My doctor thinks it might be drug induced Lupus…I will let you know.

Subj: Huge stomach pains
Date: 5/15/2009
Been on Phentermine for 1 1/2weeks 37.5, just began to having huge stomach pains, they last for hours. Do they ever go away?

Dee

AskDocWeb: That depends on the cause of the pain so please discuss this with your health care provider.

Subj: Is Phentermine safe?
Date: 5/15/2009
Is Phentermine safe? Does it causes heart failure?

Denise

AskDocWeb: When it comes to prescription drugs, safe is a relative term. There are some risks and dangers with all prescription drugs. That is why you can only get them with a doctor’s prescription. Although it is rare, an irregular heartbeat is one of the possible side effects of Phentermine and if that occurs seek emergency medical attention.

Subj: Having breast augmentation
Date: 5/17/2009
I’m having breast augmentation in 11 days and have been taking phentermines for the last 2 weeks I don’t see it on the list of things not to take but I don’t know if there’s other names for it or if it will show up in my blood work that I’m having drawn in 3 days? Thanks!

Jenna

AskDocWeb: If they are looking for it, it will show up because Phentermine can take up to a month to completely leave your system. It is good standard practice to always tell your doctor before any surgery about all prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbs that you are taking. There have been several news articles lately about how some vitamins and herbs counteract certain drug treatments. This seems to be a major problem for those in treatment for cancer when patients take vitamin E. The cancer drugs are neutralized by the vitamin E making the treatment ineffective.

Subj: Xenical with phentermine?
Date: 5/18/2009
Hi, I’m just wondering, can I take xenical with phentermine?

Emma

AskDocWeb: While it may sound good to take Phentermine suppress your appetite and xenical to inhibit the absorption of fat that doesn’t mean it is a good idea. You still have to check with your doctor because there are several health issues to consider for each one. It is possible to some nasty side effects of both, including the need for lots of extra underwear.

Subj: Natural alternative to phentermine
Date: 5/19/2009
I would like to know a natural alternative to phentermine.

Lynnae

AskDocWeb: Sorry Lynnae, there is no herbal product that does the same thing as this powerful prescription drug. However, if you do go the herbal route, be sure to check the ingredient list as some herbs interact with medication.

Subj: Does Phentermine improve metabolism?
Date: 5/20/2009
I was originally prescribed Phentermine by a doctor 10 years ago – I lost 30 pounds (down to a really thin 5’7″ 120 pounds) and kept it off for years. When I stopped taking it a couple of years ago (mostly because of the expense) I maintained the same diet and exercise and gained 20 pounds over 2 years!! Does it actually improve metabolism? Or am I just forgetting the energy it gave me to move around more, clean out closets, etc.? I have ordered more Phentermine because my blood pressure is very low as it is. I was just wondering if anyone has had the same experience. I am a vegetarian and I swear, I think I ate more when I was on it than I do now…I am 45 and thought it was age contributing to the weight gain, but now I am not sure. Thank you for feedback!!

Paula

AskDocWeb: Phentermine works by stimulating the hypothalamus and affects certain neurotransmitters that decrease appetite. It also stimulates the nervous system like the amphetamines which increases blood pressure, heart rate, and your metabolism. Remember that there is also a tendency to put on pounds as we age.

Subj: Take a break
Date: 5/20/2009
I have took Phentermine 30mg for about 2 and a half months, and yes I have seen some major results. I was in a size 9/10 and some 11’s and now I’m in a size 3-5. So yes it really works. But a web site I was on said that you should only take it for 4 weeks and take a break from it. And then do it for another 4 weeks.. I would recommend it… But you really need to take it for 4 weeks and take a break like it said to on the web site…Good Luck To You All!

Subj: Nausea
Date: 5/23/2009
I just started taking phen. It is making me very nausea and sick to my stomach. Is there anything I can do to stop feeling this way?

Kristy

AskDocWeb: Nausea is one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Sleep all day
Date: 5/24/2009
I’ve been taking phentermine for the first time perscribed by my Dr. the recommended adult dose 35.5 mg and when I take it I will sleep all day and night without feeling any boost of energy. What is that could the pharmacy have fake stuff?

Angela

AskDocWeb: You local pharmacy is not likely to sell fake stuff. Drowsiness is one of the possible side effects of Phentermine and should be discussed with your health care provider.

Subj: If you stop
Date: 5/26/2009
I’ve being taking penthermine for 3 months. I was 205 pounds before, now I’m around 185. I think it’s working but most people say “if you stop taking penthermine you will get double weight than before.” How true is this?

Yami

AskDocWeb: If you have not altered your lifestyle by changing your eating habits and exercising then it is almost certainly true. Eating right and exercising IS required in order to keep your weight under control.

Subj: I’ve lost 51 pounds!
Date: 5/27/2009
I started taking Phentermine Feb 6th 09 weighing in at 287lbs. That day I also gave up drinking pretty much everything except water, milk and v8 fusion light (which was hard for a 2 sodas a day kinda girl) For the first couple of months I kept a food/exercise log on my_calorie_counter.com. It’s amazing to see what you really put in your body even when you “think” you’re eating healthy. For example.. I thought I was doing a good thing by eating a salad at a common restaurant chain.. Turns out.. that 1 salad was 1700 calories (That should be an entire days worth) 4400 Mg of Sodium (that’s TWICE the recommended daily intake) and 89 carbs.. So… I said good bye to my MOST favorite salad… and starting making my own at home. Cheaper…and healthier.
About a month into my lifestyle change I bought “My Fitness Coach” for the Wii. It is the bomb, seriously… it’s like having a personal trainer in your house and SOOO worth the investment. Anyway… Here we are May 26th and I’ve lost 51 pounds! The Dr. said that the average is about 1/2 a pound to a pound a week so try not to get discouraged. The less you have to lose the longer it takes. Try changing up your routine and eating different foods if you are not seeing results. Make sure you are drinking water all day long… and remember, if you are working out you might not see as much weight loss on the scale. Muscle weighs more than fat. Happy Health Thoughts! If I can do it…so can you!

Subj: When to take Phentermine
Date: 5/31/2009
Hi. I’ve been taking Phentermine for 2 weeks now & I’m not sure if I should take the medication an hour after breakfast or 30-60 min before breakfast? Good news is I lost 4 lbs in 2 days & my appetite has drastically decreased!

Chartavia

AskDocWeb: According to the instructions, you should be taking Phentermine before breakfast.

Subj: Can’t seem to lose anything
Date: 6/2/2009
I have been taking phentermine for the past month and cant seem to lose anything, I also take xenical and together the two make me jittery, I do go to the gym and have only lost about 5 pounds! I do not have a gallbladder, does this have something to do with this??? And the only side affects I feel are like a jittery feeling at times and being sleepy. I take such a small dose, do I need to change it?

TC

AskDocWeb: Since you have been on it for a month, it is time to check in with your doctor. You may want to talk over your dosage, diet, and exercise program to find out what adjustments may be appropriate.

Subj: My body is use to them
Date: 6/3/2009
I have been taking phentermine 37.5mg for about two an a half month an at first I lose 10 lb a month now it seem like my body is use to them. Should I get a higher dose or doe this happen?

Sherry

AskDocWeb: Yes, this happens, it’s called building up a tolerance and it happens with most weight loss drugs. If you are following an appropriate diet and exercising like you should, your doctor may adjust your dosage or prescribe something else.

Subj: Phentermine HCL 37.7 and tinnitus
Date: 6/4/2009
I started Phentermine HCL 37.7 in November 2008 under prescription medication under a doctors supervision. Initially in a few weeks losing weight I felt I was in a cloud and started getting depressed and feeling lost. I came off it for a month to start feeling better and reported my findings to my doctors who insisted that I was imagining as there is no linkage to Phentermine HCL to depression.
In January 2009 I went back on Phentermine HCL 37.7 only to wake up on 02/12/2009 with tinnitus in my right ear. The tinnitus has not gone till now! I did not stop taking Phentermine till the end of February as I started getting depressed. The tinnitus became less noticeable and once feeling good, went back on Phentermine HCL 37.7 in 05/2009 only to get off it today as my tinnitus is back and noticeable. I conclude that any medication that plays with you nero-system, or causes blood pressure changes or other physical changes is bound to cause some long term problems. I am hoping that now that I have decided to be off Phentermine for good, my tinnitus fades away but who knows if I have to live with it for the rest of my life. Online forums on tinnitus are not too encouraging and my doctor is also lost as they claim there is no link to mood changes or tinnitus, but I was doing perfectly fine with an aim to lose just 25lbs. I am only 37 and it is scary how a small pill changed my life.

Subj: Losing hair
Date: 6/7/2009
Wow I have been a big woman for a long time…I was 300 pounds and now I weigh 230.I started this drug in December because I was diagnosed with diabeties…My diabeties is gone and I don’t need to take any medication for it. This drug is amazing! But I do have one concern? I am losing hair and not sure if this is a side effect…I’ve been searching and cant find any info on this…

Theresa

AskDocWeb: Hair loss is not listed as an official side effect of this drug. However, hair thinning has been reported by others when they have used phentermine. The problem here is that the stress of dieting can also cause hair loss so how do you tell if it was the Phentermine or the stress of dieting?

Subj: Altered taste
Date: 6/7/2009
What can you do to decrease the bad taste in your mouth. Everything has an altered taste but the good this is I quit smoking and I didn’t have a taste for a cigarette. I am taking Phenertimine. Thanks,

Janis

AskDocWeb: The altered sense of taste may be something that you just have to put up with for a few days as your body becomes adjusted to the drug. Read more feedback from users.
