Subj: Shortness of breath and hoarseness
Date: 6/8/2009
I have been using Dr. prescribed Phentermine for about 5 weeks now. I have experienced mouth dryness, mild shortness of breath and slight hoarseness. Are the latter 2 symptoms also common side effects of Phentermine? Thank you.

A

AskDocWeb: Horseness is not listed as a side effect of Phentermine but breathing difficulties are listed as a possible side effect that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Leg pain and tingling
Date: 6/11/2009
I have Used Phentermine as well for 3 months then was off for 2 back on for 1 off for 1 back on now for my second month…..trying to get rid of that last pesky 10 pounds. I too have experience leg pain on my left side and some tingling in foot as well. I too had a blood clot in my twenties due to Birth Control. I am 48 it has been going on for 2 day now and have wondered if it was a side effect from it! I don’t want to stop taking it!! Only other side effects were the dry mouth and bad taste but plenty of water eliminated that.

Michele

AskDocWeb: Please check with your doctor about the leg pain and tingling because these are not listed as side effects of Phentermine.

Subj: Sugar Free energy drink?
Date: 6/12/2009
I started taking phentermine June 8, 2009. I am on a 1200 calorie diet and I started working out about 2 to 3 hours a day. It has not even been a full week yet and I have lost 9 pounds. I love that it has given me so much energy to help me get through the longer workouts. (Before I would only workout for about an hour.) My only complaint so far is the dry mouth, which seems to be controlled if I drink lots of water. The other is that my heart races now and then. (This usually happens within the first few hours of taking it.) I knew of these side effects before taking it so I guess I can get used to it. My question is… can I have a Sugar Free energy drink about half way through the day? I notice that I am starting to get really tired towards the middle of the day and I think an energy drink could help me get through the rest of the day a little easier. ( I have two young children and a 10 week old.) My days are very long starting at 6:00am and ending around midnight.

Laura

AskDocWeb: Without knowing the ingredients in your energy drink we would avoid using them while taking Phentermine. There have been reports of people passing out from the combination. The directions do say to avoid “stimulant” drugs that may increase your heart rate or blood pressure such as caffeine and decongestants.

Subj: I feel hungry
Date: 6/12/2009
I have been on phentermine for 3 days, The first day I took half a pill then the second day I took the whole pill and since I have been taking the whole pill. The first two days I felt a little dizzy and energized the third day I felt the dry mouth sympton but I feel hungry all the time even after I eat I feel hungry but in the mornings I don’t. It just happens around 1:30 when I feel the hunger. Is this normal or what? Please inform.

Tashika

AskDocWeb: Phentermine is an appetite suppressant, which means that it reduces your appetite but it doesn’t eliminate it completely. It is normal to experience some hunger but it is also possible that your dosage may need to be adjusted so talk to your health care provider.

Subj: Hysterectomy
Date: 6/13/2009
I have been prescribed phentermin by my general doctor for a few months now. I’ve lost 35 lbs. My question is I am getting ready to go in for a hysterectomy (by a different doctor) in 4 days. How long does it take to flush out of your system? If I stop taking it, is 3 days long enough to be completely out of my body? I am very concerned about this and can’t seem to find a straight answer on how long it takes. Is there anything I can do to help flush it out of my system faster?

Lynn

AskDocWeb: Phentermine can stay in the body for up to a month after discontinuing but that doesn’t mean it would affect the surgery for that long. Make sure that the doctor who will perform the hysterectomy knows about your use of Phentermine.

Subj: Can I take half?
Date: 6/15/2009
My family doctor has prescribed Phentermine for me. I have been taking it off and on for a few months. By controlling food intake and w/exercise I have had positive results. I do have one side effect I did not see in this article. I get up early for work and take my medication (37.5 mg) at 5 am. I exerciser immediately after work 60-90 minutes. Then I eat dinner. We always try to eat no later than 7 PM. I have a hard time falling asleep or I wake up during the night and can’t go back to sleep some times. I read that the medication should not be crushed. I was wondering if I can take a half and it will still work correctly. Please advise.

Mikey

AskDocWeb: Phentermine comes in several dosage strengths, both capsules and pills. Some pills have a score line or groove across the middle indicating that they can be broken in half but you may want to talk to your doctor about adjusting dosage.

Subj: Blood sugar levels?
Date: 6/15/2009
The side effects listed on the paper that comes with the Phentermine prescription says that it may affect blood sugar levels. How? Does it lower it or raise it? I wouldn’t mind if it lowered it, because before starting this prescription my blood sugar level was flagged high. I’ve been searching online and all I can find is that it affects blood sugar levels, but can you clarify if it raises it or lowers it please? Thank you!

Karla

AskDocWeb: The information we have says that diabetes is one of the conditions you should tell your doctor about before taking Phentermine but it doesn’t say how the blood sugar levels are affected.

Subj: Chest pain
Date: 6/15/2009
I have been taking Phentermine 37.5 for about 7 weeks. I have lost 17lbs about two weeks ago when exercising I had a hard time breathing. I have had a pain on the left side of my chest going threw my chest bone. I was wondering with it still hurting is it the phentermine or did I pull something? It hurts really bad when I take a deep breath or pick something up with my left arm.

Kayera

AskDocWeb: Chest pain is the number one sign of a heart attack so you need to check with your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: What would happen?
Date: 6/16/2009
My wedding is this week and I’m trying to lose as much weight as possible I have lost 8 pounds in the last two weeks and thought if I took phentermine maybe I could speed it up even more. What would happen if I took more than one pill a day?

Brittany

AskDocWeb: If you take more then the prescribed amount you could experience anxiety, chest pain, difficulty breathing, constipation or diarrhea, difficulty urinating, dizziness, headache, mood changes, nervousness, irregular heartbeat, tremors, swelling, impotence, aggressiveness, confusion, vomiting, panic attack, hallucinations, and/or seizures.

Subj: Blurred vision and confusion
Date: 6/16/2009
I have been taking phentermine for 2 weeks. I have woken up with blurred vision and seeing blobs of bright colors. I constantly hear things that aren’t really happening. I get confused easily and can’t hardly concentrate. I stopped taking the pills and I am not going to take them any more. I did the regular dosage of 1 pill a day and never exceeded that amount. I ate 2300 calories a day like they told me and still had these effects. In my opinion its really scared me because of the effects. I have had days of depression and then days of feeling very happy. I don’t like the effects it puts on me and definitely do not reccomend it. The fastest way to lose weight is eat 6 small meals a day and drink water only! I reccomend taking a multivitamin every day as well. 3 days a week just go walking for 20-30 minutes. Trust me it works just as well as the phentermine pill and its healthier. Nothing is worth risking your life!

Subj: Dizzy feeling
Date: 6/18/2009
I just started taking phentermine 6 days ago and it makes me feel a little dizzy but I do not feel hungry I have to force myself to eat. Is this normal and will this dizzy feeling go away.

Jay

AskDocWeb: Dizziness is one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor. Other side effects that should be reported are anxiety, chest pain, breathing difficulties, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty urinating, headaches, mood changes, nervousness, restlessness or tremor, pounding heart, swelling, and impotence or changes in your sex drive.

Subj: Reached a stand still
Date: 6/23/2009
I have taken Phentermine on and off for several years. Recently I started back up about a month and half ago but now I am at a stand still. I was wondering if this is normal. Should I try something else? I am at the highest dose 1 time a day.

HEIDI

AskDocWeb: It is normal for your body to build up a tolerance over time for any diet pill. You can talk to your doctor about an alternative but also ask about what lifestyle changes might be appropriate for your diet and activity level.

Subj: Non stop migraine
Date: 6/24/2009
I have been taking phen for about two weeks and have lost about six pounds, not alot comparatively and I really love how it help my hunger craves. However, I think it may be causing my migraines, is that possible? I am on topomax to prevent migraine and both time that have taken phen I have had non stop migraine for days on end.

Telicia

AskDocWeb: Yes, migraines are possible and should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Hair loss
Date: 6/24/2009
I am on my secong Phentermine script now and have had it for about 4-5 months now bc I don’t really take it. I took the first prescription like every other day to work out because it gave me a burst of energy. After I lost the weight I wanted to lose which was like about 20 pounds, I stopped taking it. But every now and them since I have a few left will take one to go and work out which I said I was gonna stop doing because it makes me feel really drained later in the day.
I also had an IUD inplanted about three weeks ago and just got it removed yesterday because I thought it may be causing my hair to fall out. because I hadn’t been taking anything else and like I said, I’ve only had like two phentermine scripts in almost a year and a half. Could it be the phentermine, the IUD or a combination of both. Hopefully it was the IUD hormones cause I hate the thought of having wasted a decent BC method that I cant’ afford to pay cash for. The reason I think It may have been the IUD is because after I had my little girl, months later, my hormones made my hair fall out pretty bad but Doc said it would probably stop with the IUD but I don’t want to take the chance of going completely bald before it stopped. SORRY SO LONG BUT WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?

ET

AskDocWeb: Was the IUD called Mirena? There seems to be a growing number of complaints about hair loss with that IUD. Hair has been reported to come out in clumps or patches sometimes the size of a quarter or larger. If you search the Internet for “IUD and Hair Loss” you will find over 60,000 pages that complain about this. Read more feedback from users.
