Subj: Muscle pain
Date: 7/26/2009
I have been taking c-phentermine 30MG CAP – prescription for maybe a year, I have not lost weight but it gives me the energy I need as I work nights and try to keep a house up. The last few months my legs have been hurting (inside, like my ligaments, muscles not being lubricated enough) not joints. I have tried natural pain relievers like MSM, now I started taking Flexcin just 2 days ago. I stopped taking my phentermine just today to see if this could be the problem, do you have any suggestions? Thank you, this pain is driving me nuts and it is better when I get up and do stuff, of course my job is sitting in front of a computer for 8 to 10 hours a day.
Debbie
AskDocWeb: Others have reported leg pain while taking Phentermine but it is not listed as one of the side effects. Those reporting leg pain also report that it went away within 3 weeks of discontinuing the drug.
Subj: Taking Phentermine for over 10 years
Date: 7/26/2009
I have been taking Phentermine 37.5, for well over 10 years. I am 51. Recently, I have gotten some type of infection, which I thought was the flu, but lasted five days. My husband took me to the emergency room, where my white count was off the charts, and my sugar was over 400. I have never been on medication for diabetes, but I had gestational diabetes with my last child. Blood cultures were done, but they cannot find what type of infection I have. I am taking insulin, four times a day, to get my sugar in line. Both are under control now, but I have a red rash on my right leg, my neck is stiff, and I am retaining about 20 pounds of water, that I cannot get rid of. I am on lasics, but the water is not coming off. Can this be from the doctors taking me off the phentermine right away? What can I do. Please help me, I think I am going to die.
Kathy
AskDocWeb: Sorry Kathy, the long-term effects of Phentermine are unknown as are the results of discontinuing after long-term use. Most likely this is because Phentermine is typically prescribed as a short-term treatment.
Subj: Arrhythmia and personality change
Date: 7/27/2009
My problems with Phentermine are two-fold. I tried it and it almost killed me. Went to ER because heart race was out of control. Now seeing Cardiologist for the rest of my life for heart arythmias. My main concern is how it has affected my friend of 16 years. She has been on pnen. now for two or three years and she is no longer the same person. She has had a complete personality change and has become almost dangerous when she is angered. This is NOT the person I have known for 16 years. She refuses to give up the pills because she thinks she will get fat-she is not now-I don’t even know why she is taking them-she has a perfectly normal weight. She is absolutely nuts on them though. Friendship is over but I feel so bad for her family. She is a raving loon on those pills!! Please think twice before starting this drug!

Subj: Sinus pressure
Date: 7/29/2009
While on Phentermine what can be taken to relieve sinus pressure. I usually take Sudafed PE. What is safe to take with phentermine?
Mari
AskDocWeb: What may be safe for someone else may not be safe for you so check with your doctor.
Subj: Phentermine makes me tired
Date: 7/29/2009
I have taken phentermine for 4 days and stopped. It was making me extremly tired/fatigue. According to my doc, if I am not active while on the med, it will make me tired and fatigue. It didn’t make sense to me, but I’ve decided not to take it. Is my doc’s comment acceptable?
J
AskDocWeb: Phentermine is just one part of the three part plan to help you lose weight. The other two parts are changes in your diet and changes in your activity level. Imagine your diet plan as a triangle shaped three-legged table. Label one leg as Phentermine, one leg as changes in your eating habits, and the third leg as changes in your activity level. As long as all three legs are there, the table is well supported and you have a solid plan. Without one of the three legs, the plan falls down. In order for this drug to work as it is intended, an increase in activity level is required.
Subj: Short-term use?
Date: 8/4/2009
My first question is why is this medicine only recommended for short-term use? Also, is it safe to be taken with anesthesia? Thanks!
Jasmin
AskDocWeb: The body has a tendency to build up a tolerance for the drug over time. Once that happens it stops working and the appetite returns. There are no reports of Phentermine causing any problems with operations but if you are going to have surgery be sure to tell your doctor about all prescription drugs and any supplements that you may be taking.
Subj: Headaches, dizziness, and vomiting
Date: 8/6/2009
This is my second day of taking phentermine 37.5. I recently was taking high blood pressure medication and birth control. 3 weeks ago I stopped taking all of that and my blood pressure went back to normal. They believed it was my birth control that caused the high blood pressure. So they diecide to run a blood test and found out that I have high insulin levels so I crave sugars a lot. So since I am 17 and weigh 215 they put me on this pill since they think I’m obese. It is really helping me with not eation so much and cutting back but I’m losing 1 to 2 pounds a day. I recently came home from work with a headache and felt dizzie some I tried to lay down put then I started vomiting like crazy. And the thing is that it’s just fluids that I’m vomiting up. Is this a sign that I should stop taking the drug since I’m having more headache, feeling dizzy and vomiting? But the thing is I ready don’t want to stop taking it because my family is pressuring me to lose weigh and they are imbarsed to be seen with me. What do I do?
Christine
AskDocWeb: Headaches and dizziness are listed as side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Blood pressure
Date: 8/10/2009
I was taking phentermine. I feel over heated when I go to the restroom to do number 2. I feel like falling out. I have to get right in the bed. If I walk around the block I get over heated and has to get in the bedroom. Is this from taking the phentermine? My pressure with up 194/115, would this go away at anytime.
Sementa
AskDocWeb: Phentermine causes elevation of blood pressure and is listed as one of the things that may need to be monitored by your doctor.
Subj: Addicted
Date: 8/16/2009
I have been taking phetermine 37.5 for over 3 years now. I started taking them when I began nursing school. I ran out of meds and didnt have the time or money to make another appoinment. I worked during the day and attended class at night for several days in class I could not hold my head up. I questioned the class on night (pharm.) and the teacher turned and said “you’re withdrawing from your meds” I thought she was jokeing until the next night…I said really what’s going on with me? My teacher then said “Ok extra credit, look the drug up and write a paper on it”. I did, and I was an ADDICT going threw withdrawal! I hated that, and because I never lost anymore weight, so basically I was taking it to just “function”. I tried again to get off it and fell asleep at a stop light. While taking the med my mood is up and happy, while off the med I am very tired and need naps, my arms and legs feel as if they weigh a 100lb.s, I can’t even make it to work! The doctor that prescribed it knew I worked and was in school, he said “this will help” but he never told me about the effects of being addicted. Trust me I have tried coffee, energy drinks and otc med.s nothing helps.
Saying all of this to say…Be careful I can see a weak minded person on this drug and eventually going to something illegal and stronger because you will become immune to the drug and/or will not be able to sleep, therfoe you could end up addicted to a street amphentime and or xanax or something in its class to “come down”. I have addicts in my family and refuse (although have been tempted)For now I will make another appointment (with no insurence) for this med….P.S. I lost 80lbs without exercise when I first got on it, I have since gained back about 30 (and I am still on it) I think you must first find out why you are overweight is it a mental issue(?) because if so no appetite supp. will help. I think growing up with a drug addicted mother homeless, always scrounging for food was my issue. I wish I would have taken the time and money for psychiatric help instead…

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need to check back with your doctor for more instructions and report the problems with sleeping.
Subj: Back pain, teeth and gums
Date: 8/16/2009

Subj: Dropped 22 lbs.
Date: 8/19/2009
I have taken Phentermine for 1 month and along with exercise and diet change I have dropped 22 lbs. I eat all day. In the morning I have 1 egg, 1 bacon & a glass of juice. My lunch and snacks for the day are in a food container. This has 3 spots that allow me to fix a salad, store carrots with celery and store finger fruit. Pick the fruits and veggies through out the day. At night I have a protein meal of chicken, turkey meat or fish with steamed veggies! I exercise for 1 hour at night. Walk on a treadmill. This treadmill is in the living room to keep me occupied, as I watch my favorite shows. The only thing I am afraid of is if I go off the Phentermine will I lose my ambition to keep on schedule for my goal?

Subj: Energy from the pills?
Date: 8/23/2009
I am 32 years old and have been taking Phentermine for 3 1/2 months…I have lost about 50 pounds on the pills and I have also drastically changed my eating habits and I work out like crazy now. My question is I am about to start wiening (spelling) myself off of the pills and try to just do the eating right and exercising thing on my own….is there anything that I can take for the energy part because I really like the energy I get from the pills…it really helps me at work…is it safe to take something for that after getting off the pills?
