Subj: I’m so addicted
Date: 1/4/2010
Yeah it is amazing… I have been on adipex/phentermine for over 2 years. At one time taking two a day, but have steadily been taking around 1/2 to one a day for the past year. I haven’t built up too much of a tolerance bc when I start to feel crappy, I take one and feel better. happy, talkative, alive. I’m so addicted. I wont take one for a day or two and abruptly, I cant function. dont want to talk, am depressed, and basically feel the exact oppoisite of how good phentermine makes me feel. if it was healthy, id take it all the time, hell I’d eat it for breakfast. but hey, that’s not a good sign. I am going to the doctors this wk and hopefully can figure out a plan but I’m def. dependant on it and dont really know what to do. God!

Subj: Banding procedure
Date: 1/6/2010
started using this medication years ago when it first hit the market. In the beginning, the weight loss was substantial but as soon as I stopped taking it, I gained back what I lost and then some. I feel it just contributed to yoyo weight control. also, prolonged use results in a tolerance to the medication which requires increasing the dosage….still, I continued to take this drug sporadically for more than 20 years. I have been diagnosed with hypertension and have occasional bouts of accellerated heart rate. finally, I opted for gastric banding. this has resulted in weight loss that I never experienced with appetite suppressants. It is pretty impossible (uncomfortable) to overeat (excess food comes back up!) I sometimes have the urge to keep eating even when I am full because the food tastes so good but I know if I don’t stop when I reach my stomach capacity, I will be sorry.
It is a trade off no matter what weight loss solution you choose…there is no magic bullet and there is no medication or surgical intervention that is going to allow you to eat any and everything. If a person can’t exercise some self control, no medical weight loss intervention will ever produce lasting results. That is the bottom line. Surgical intervention does not fail the patient…rather, the patient fails the surgery (in other words, sabotages the intervention) in all case where the weight is gained back.
I recently went to a holiday dinner where a person who had the same banding procedure as I had, made one trip after another to the buffet table. I couldn’t figure out how this was possible when I can only tolerate a few bites…at intervals. Then I observed, she would eat and when the excess came back up, she would spit it into a plastic cup! Gross! This person lost 100 lbs and still weighs close to 300 lbs. I was at 190 and am now 130. people such as this who are addicted to eating are not good candidates for anything in my opinion because clearly, they are not going to change their bad habits or their attitude about eating.
I opted to do something about my weight so that I didn’t become 300 + pounds. I am tempted by delacacies all of the time the same as anyone else but I like my size 6 jeans and the fact that at age 60, I can cross my legs, jog and am often told, I don’t look a day over 45. I also believe, I opted for a means to permanent weight loss for less superficial reasons such as truly improving my overall health. I still battle hypertension…probably from years of taking drugs to control my appetite, but I am 3 years out from the banding procedure and do not have to struggle to control my weight. Anyone who is more than 20 pounds overweight…very unlikely you will have long term results when you rely on medication to lose weight and you could be causing future health problems as a result of appetite suppressants.

Subj: Confusion and memory loss
Date: 1/10/2010
I have been using phentermine on and off for about two years. The weight loss is amazing but you have to be very carefull when you stop taking it. The weight will come right back. I have lost 30 pounds in a month before on this medication. Total weight loss is 65 pounds. My only real issue is severe confusion and memory loss. I find it very hard to do my job. Do I get skinny but stupid, or gain my weight back and perform better at my job. I am afraid the memory loss is permanent because even when I am off the medicine for two months, my memory issues do not change.

Subj: Blood pressure and heart rate
Date: 1/13/2010
I used phentermine for two months. I stopped using it because my blood pressure and pulse rate was up. Been off of it for almost two months now. I still have blood pressure that is low to high and heart rate always up. I am under a lot of stress already from a separation/divorce. I have become very worried and anxious about everything. Is this due to taking the phentermine? I was already separated when I started taking it. But the stress of it seems to be worse now. Thanks!
Beth
AskDocWeb: Anxiety is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: No prescription needed
Date: 1/15/2010
I’m having a hard time to lose weight, I’ve consulted a doctor about this and asked me to buy phentermine. I bought this on (website deleted), this site is so awesome, it doesnt need any prescriptions.

AskDocWeb: While it is true that drug dealers do not require a prescription, that does NOT mean that it is legal.
Subj: Pneumonia and asthma
Date: 1/18/2010
I started taking phentermine about two months ago. In the meantime I had pneumonia and now have developed asthma. Is the because of the phentermine? I have shortness of breath and tightness in my chest. Feels like 500lbs sitting on me. They have diagnosed me with asthma during this time. I am also having my throat stretched and have still been taking the phentermine. Will this effect being put to sleep?
Bob
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of Phentermine causing pneumonia or asthma but about 24% of patients have some kind of chest pain. According to the National Library of Medicine, Phentermine should be discontinued one week prior to an operation.
Subj: Difficulty urinating
Date: 1/20/2010
I am a 31 year old male that is about 50 pounds overweight. My doctor prescribed Phentermine as a way to “kick start” my weight loss since I have a strong family history of heart disease because of weight. I have been on Phentermine for two days now. I have had friends who have been on it, so I knew a little of what to expect (the crazy drug feeling the first day and all). However, I have noticed that it takes a little longer to urinate. I don’t actually have trouble urinating, but it seems that it just takes a little bit longer to “come out” if that makes any sense. It is kind of like the muscle that lets me “push” is out is weak. I have seen where this is a mild to moderate side effect. I am wondering if it will subside or if it is something I should worry too much about since it is a listed side effect. Any help on this would be great. Thanks.
Bryan
AskDocWeb: When you were reading about the side effects, it appears you didn’t read far enough. Yes it is one of the possible side effects but difficulty urinating is also a symptom that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: More harm than good?
Date: 1/22/2010
hey I have taken the phentermine for 5 days now felt good, little bit dissy but apart from that really good. My aunty n I went on them together coz a friend of ours lost 9 stone on them. We have been reading up on them n the long term affects aint good but if we was only to take them for 2months would we suffer from heart problems in the future? I’m really concerend about this coz he is my life. I went to my doctor n she said they do more harm than good even when I told her they were for short term only, also I got them of a private doctor my actual doctor said they aint even aloud to prescribe them. will I have any major side effects frm these pills if I still take them. if u recomend I dont how long do they take to leave your system n could I get heart problems from only takin them 5 day xx please rite back thanks
Sarah
AskDocWeb: If your actual doctor said that this drug will do you more harm than good, all we can do is remind you that since your doctor knows your health history and current condition, she also knows what would be harmful to you. If you are taking them after your doctor said no then you are going against the advice of your doctor. That can result in major health problems.
Subj: Almost like having narcolepsy
Date: 1/22/2010
I have been taking Phentermine 37.5 mg for about 18 months now. To be honest the pill is not working and I have actually gained weight while on it. I have tried to stop taking the med but I am running into a serious problem. I get so tired that it is almost like having narcolepsy. There is absolutely nothing I can do to stay awake if I dont take this pill… I am mother to 4 small children and I have to be able to function. How can I safely stop taking this medication without the horrible side effects?
Destiny
AskDocWeb: The longer the drug is taken, the more likely withdrawal effect are to occur if stopped suddenly. Please talk to your doctor about how you should go about stopping this medication.
Subj: My experience with Phentermine
Date: 1/23/2010
I started taking Phentermine several years ago to lose 20 lbs. Initially, I took one pill each day for two weeks. The first day I took a pill, I felt a great sense of euphoria and a surge of energy but that night I did not sleep well. These symptoms disappeared after the first day and I lost ten lbs. However, during those two weeks, I began to feel that I had a toothache in every tooth; I found myself constantly chewing the inside of my mouth; the tip of my tongue became sensitive and several small ulcers developed on the sides. I immediately stopped taking the drug fearing an alergic reaction although I had not read of any effects of Phentermine on teeth/tongue sensitivity.
Several months later, after I began to gain back the weight I had lost, I deceided to begin taking Phentermine again but this time only two days a week – Saturday and Sunday, because those are the two days when my 3 children are home 24/7 and my stress levels rise causing me to binge out on “comfort food”. I have been doing this now for two years. Although I am no longer losing weight, I am no longer gaining weight either, because, with the aid of Phentermine, I am able to lower my calorie consumption on my “stress filled” weekends and that seems to balance out any excess calories I take in during the week. I still experience euphoria (in the form of an extreme sense of optimism and happiness)and I still lose one night’s sleep on Saturdays, but the teeth/mouth symptoms are no longer an issue. Also, I do not seem to have any problems with addiction – I was able to go off of the pills recently for 5 weeks for a minor surgical procedure without any negative effects.
My doctor has given me the go-ahead to continue taking the drug on this “week-end only” plan and, since I already undergo kidney screening because I am also on a cholesterol lowering drug, my kidney functions are being monitored. Based on my experience therefore, I would suggest that those who are having problems with taking Phentermine for extended periods of time, may want to try using it on a limited basis on those days when stress is likely to cause them to overeat, whether this may be during a holiday period or, as in my own case, certain days each week.
