So I started taking this Medication in November of 2007. I started on a Friday and by Sunday I had lost 10 lbs, Monday came and it was 12lbs, but I had a huge rash all over my chest, neck and face. I have many different allergies and I am very sensitive to all meds. I called my doctor and he told me to stop taking it because it was an allergic reaction! What could I be allergic to in this med? Also December 2007 I found out I was pregnant, my son had many issues, such as increased nuchal fold of 7mm and he was born with severe Left sided CDH and died 29 days after birth. Cdh affects the lungs and diaphragm. Is it possible this med was still in my system when I conceived and could have caused his congenital defect? When I started taking this med I was 50lbs over weight, minimum, and I have auto immune hypothyroidism. Now I am 85 lbs over weight. I want to try taking this again…but again want to know if it is possible to be allergic to this. The weight is really affecting me, and it is from having children, I gain it but cannot lose it. I diet and exercise and only lose like 5 lbs.
AskDocWeb: Although rare, it is possible to have an allergic reaction to Phentermine. In the United States, about 3% of babies are born with birth defects. The cause of CDH or congenital diaphragmatic hernia is unknown. It is a developmental defect in which the diaphragm does not form properly so that some portion of the abdominal contents (stomach, spleen, liver, etc) protrudes into the chest cavity. This abnormality takes place early in pregnancy, about 8 weeks gestation. CDH is usually an isolated birth defect with no other problems present. Based on the literature, the risk of recurrence for having another child with an isolated CDH after one affected infant is about 2 per cent.
Subj: Cold hands and sluggish metabolism
I took phentermine for 3 months with diet and exercise and lost 40 lbs. I am always cold and tired and it made me feel good emotionally, more energetic and warmed my hands and feet. I felt lighter and younger. I stopped bc I grew worried I was on it too long. I maintained for about a month, but then started gaining. Now I have gained 23 lbs back and I am back to being cold and lethargic. I have 15 or so pills left and I just started taking 1/2 a pill every other day just to keep my energy up. I went to a cardiologist and endocrinologist and although I am overweight every test I have indicates that I am the picture of health. The endocrinologist said I had the best blood work she’s seen all year and that since grandparents, parent and siblings are obese/overweight I just have slow metabolism. I have picture perfect blood work, blood pressure, cholestorol, no thyroid prob, etc. I really thought I had hypothyroid because of my symptoms. But, seeing how phentermine actually alleviated my symptoms greatly it makes me wonder why there isn’t something safer that a dr. could prescribe or that I could do to feel “normal” without phentermine. I don’t want to be addicted to it or harm myself by taking it longer than recommended but I need to be able to get through life without cold hands and a sluggish metabolism, feeling lethargic all the time. I would love some advice- is taking phentermine long term ever safe and if not are there any other conditions that are improved by the taking of phentermine, something else I might have that is undiagnosed.
AskDocWeb: We do not foresee Phentermine ever being used long-term because of the possibility of addiction. Although it is possible to have slow metabolism, it is rare and typically not the cause of obesity. Talk with your doctor about what healthy changes you can make. If you really think that your metabolism is too slow, your doctor can check for such problems as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome.
Subj: Before surgery
I have been using Phentermine 37.5 mg for 3 months, I have lost 24 pounds so far. As far as side effects I can not seem to sleep well and when I do for short periods of time. I think my weight loss is attributed to diet along with the medication. My question is I am considering cosmestic surgery and would like to know what the safe time zone is to stop taking the medication so that I may have surgery.
AskDocWeb: Although Phentermine is not a blood thinner it has been reported to interfere with anesthesia. Several sources said to stop taking it two weeks before surgery and one source said three weeks. If you are going to have surgery, it is your responsibility to tell your doctor about all prescription drugs and any supplements that you are taking.
Subj: Zoloft with Phentermine?
I have been taking Phentermine now for 3wks. So far I have lost 10lbs. But prior to the Phentermine I was on Zoloft 100mgs and Xanax as needed for anxiety. I stopped the Zoloft cause I wasn’t sure if there were side effects with the two. Is there? I take the Xanax to help me sleep cause the Phentermine keeps me up or allows me to sleep only a few hrs a night. I’ve had several side effects including muscle and back aches and pain, dry mouth, dizziness, and worst of all horrible mood swings and meanness as well as feeling anxiuos, but like I said that’s when I take the Xanax. The Zoloft seemed to help with my moods before starting Phentermine. Can I take the two together?
AskDocWeb: There is a possible major drug interaction listed between Phentermine and Zoloft. Toxic reactions have been reported with patients experiencing jitteriness, racing thoughts, stomach cramps, dry eyes, heart palpitations, tremors, and restlessness. Please discuss this with your doctor.
Subj: Kind of scary
Hi, I am 22 and weigh 130 the highest I have EVER been. My normal weight is about 115-118. I would like to try phentramine but I am scared of what people are saying about it. Are the side effects as bad as some people are saying ( I know they are different for all people) just kind of scary people are talking about deppression and liver damage and bad mood swings….thanks.
AskDocWeb: There are legitimate concerns about possible side effects. That is why you have to have your doctor weight the known benefits against the possible risks before you can get a prescription.
Subj: Always constipated
I had lost 100 lbs while taking phentermine but I was always constipated, bad. So I quit taking it. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do?
Subj: Ways that Phentermine helps you lose weight
I’ve have a low thyroid, first of all, I have never had a weight problem, I got depressed and couldn’t eat, this lasted 3 yrs. for 3 yrs, I have been asking my doctor, how could I be gaining so much weight yet I’m not eating no more then 700 calories at the most. Finally I was put on Phentermine, the problem is, I don’t have a problem with appetite control, I don’t get hungry. Does this drug help drop pounds in other ways. I too have been experiencing slight headaches and dizzyness. I don’t have any energy, but this is due to other blood work that is low. So, my question was answered as far as headache, just need to know will it help me loose the excess weight in some other way other then appetite suppresant. My doctor is aware of my calorie intake. Thank you, looking forward to your answer.
AskDocWeb: Phentermine also stimulates the nervous system making the muscles use more energy, which of course burn more calories. That combined with your reduced calorie intake should increase the effectiveness of your exercise program to help you lose weight.
Subj: Tingling, some constipation and dry mouth
I have been using phentermine for the past 4 weeks. I must say that I have had pretty much no problem with it. I’m eating healthy, limiting carbs, sugar, fat. At first phentermine gave me a big boost of energy and I was really wired, but now that I am exercising more I would say that it keeps my energy stable throughout the day. The Side effects I experience were minor and Temporary. The First few days I had tingling in my head 30 min after taking it, then I had some constipation and dry mouth. Other than those I haven’t experienced any further side effects. In the first 3.5 weeks I lost 14 lbs, just 36 to go.
Subj: Mixing capsules
Can the yellow mutual 274 capsuals of phentermine 30 mg be mixed with the blue and clear k 28 capsuals. I took one yellow and one blue and clear one is that ok or should I just take the yellow ones together and the blue and clear together. Does it matter?
AskDocWeb: Yes, it does matter. For the average person, mixing medication is a bad idea because it can lead to serious problems. Please consult with your doctor.
Subj: Best for weight problem
phentermine is the best, if you have weight probleme please try phentermine.
Subj: Nervous break down
I was taking phenthrmine for about a month and was happy with the weight results, but the side affects were intense for me. I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiaty disorders in the past and wasnt currently on any phyc meds when I first started phentermine. I started to notice VERY intence mood swings, there were days I would feel soo depressed and just cry for hours for no reason, and there were times I would have like anxiety attacts, at work! I would try to hide it of course because I was at work…but my chest would be tight, hard to breathe, dizzy, and I would sweat, to the point where I’d almost faint..then just last week I had a nervous break down and almost took my life…I was in the hospital for 3 days…could this all be related to the phentermine?
AskDocWeb: Your post shows how important it is to take this drug only while under the care of a doctor. Depression is listed as a possible side effect of Phentermine, as are mood swings, agitation, and difficulty breathing, which should all be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Dry eyes
I’ve been taking Phentermine on and off for about a year. Sometimes my eyes feel tired and dry. What causes that? I use eye drops to help but it doesn’t cure the irritation. help?
AskDocWeb: There are several possible causes of dry eyes; Blepharitis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome and vitamin A deficiency. There are also environmental conditions such as dust in the air, too much sun, wind, high altitude, a dry climate, hot blowing air, and dry air. Some common medications, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) can cause dry eyes. These include:
- ACE inhibitors
- Birth control pills
- Certain antidepressants
- Diuretics, used to treat high blood pressure
- Isotretinoin-type drugs for treatment of acne
- Opiate-based pain relievers
- Sleeping pills
Tasks that require intense visual concentration such as working at a computer, driving or reading tend to decrease your blink rate, which also allows the eyes to dry out. Read more feedback from users.
