Subj: Side effects are horrible
Date: 4/23/2010
I’ve been taking phentermine for three weeks – I’ve lost fifteen pounds. It seems miraculous to have a virtual complete cessation of appetite, but the side effects are horrible. Awful dry mouth, sleeplessness, exacerbation of depression, irritability, cough, and my hair has just started to fall out. It seems like the drug has to completely poison your system to get you to stop eating. I am wondering if it is really worth it.

Subj: Manufacturer of phentermine
Date: 4/24/2010
I started taking 1/2 blue phentermine about 2 weeks ago, and lost nearly 5 pounds the first week. It was great – I felt good, and tripled my daily walk – am very motivated right now. Unfortunately, I developed ‘mosquito-bite’ hives on my arms, lower belly, and thigh. Since this is the second time I have developed a drug rash while taking a script, I suspect it is actually a reaction to something in the formulation, rather than the pill itself. My doc has told me to flush my system for a minimum of 5 days (10 being better – I have the red-headed physiology and don’t tolerate anth-histamines well). At that point, I intend to try a different formulation. Is there any particular manufacturer of phentermine which has fewer or more reported reactions? Since I have 60 pounds to lose, and have been unsuccessful before now, I feel the appetite suppressant is my only option. Any ideas what else I might try?!
Valerie
AskDocWeb: We have not seen data about reactions that would allow anyone to compare drug manufacturers based on that criteria. Your doctor should know about the best possible alternatives for you.
There are several types of phentermine sold under various brand names by many manufacturers. Here is a partial list of manufacturers that produce phentermine: Abana, Allscripts, Amide, Apotheca, Camal, Duramed, Elge, Eon, Forest Pharma, Gate, Geneva, HJ Harkins Co, JMI Canton, Jones, King, Lannett, Lemmon, Marlop, Medeva, Nat Pharmpak Serv, PDRX, Vortech, Phisicians Total Care, Physicians Total Care, Qualitest, Quality Care, Quantum, Richwood, Rosemont, Rugby, SKB, Teva, and United Res.
Subj: Moody and numbness
Date: 4/24/2010
I have been taking phentermine for about 3 weeks now, I am 5″2 and I weigh 151. Since I’ve taken it I do feel a little moody, and I’ve also noticed some numbness in my upper right arm to my elbo and also on my pinky, also I’m not sure if maybe the stiffness in my neck is from this. Could all this be from the pill? I have one more week to go should I stop, or am I just paranoid? Please help!
Laura
AskDocWeb: A few people have reported mood swings while taking Phentermine. Numbness is not listed as a side effect but it should be reported to your doctor. When the numbness is on the right side of the body, that can be an indication of a stroke so best not take any chances.
Subj: Allergic reaction?
Date: 4/26/2010
I have been taking Phentermine for a month now and have noticed a rash in the inner bend of my elbow. I have also that my body temperature has been elevated and in turn I frequently wake up sweating. I believe that the rash in my elbow is a heat rash but noticed this morning that I also had a large patch on my forearm. This is only on my left arm. Would this qualify as an allergic reaction and should I stop taking the Phentermine.
Christina
AskDocWeb: A basic safety rule is, when in doubt, check it out so have your doctor evaluate the rash.
Subj: Phentermine is working
Date: 5/2/2010
I have lost 19 pounds in 4 and a 1/2 weeks. The first week I lost almost 10 pds and then it went to about 2 or 3 pds a week. I love it. The only thing different is not feeling hungry. I’m also more focused on work and just feel happier. 22 pds to go…

AskDocWeb: Keep up the good work. It is worth the effort to get control of your weight.
Subj: Stomach cramps
Date: 5/3/2010
I have been on phentermine for almost two months now. The first month everything was wonderful I experienced no side effects and I lost 11.5pds. The second month has been horrible. I am having the worst stomach cramps that I have ever experienced. I have had my gall bladder, urine and pancreas tested, none of these are a problem. I did feel some relief from my period and I’ve also changed my birth control just this month. The Dr.’s are no help, they just keep telling me its indegistion. Do you believe the phentermine could be causing this?
melanie
AskDocWeb: Indigestion or stomach upset is listed as a possible side effect of Phentermine but actual stomach cramps are not.
Subj: Feeling tired
Date: 5/4/2010
I have been on phentermine for a week and I noticed after a couple of days that I am feeling tired after a few hours of taking it. It feels like its really mellows me out, not the side effect I was hoping for.

Subj: Phentermine long-term?
Date: 5/6/2010
I am 275 pounds and a type II diabetic. I asked my doctor for medication as I have not had any luck at weight loss. I do not walk due to my left knee. I am curious…. is taking drugs like Phentermine LONG-TERM more dangerous than gastric by-pass surgery. I am referring to a gastric by-pass in which one fully recovers from the surgery.
Cindy
AskDocWeb: Up until 1997 the FDA had required that most diet drugs like Phentermine be limited to a maximum of three months. At that time, sibutramine (Meridia) and orlistat (Xenical) were approved for use up to one year, but physicians, at their discretion, could prescribe them for longer. Drugs have not proven to be a long-term solution to weight control.

Subj: Refuse to buy clothes
Date: 5/12/2010
I have an appt this Thursday with the weight lost center dr. I’m a pit nervous as I have never taken medication for weight loss. I have tried every diet in the books and TV, nothing has worked. I am 5’0, and 156lbs and down to my last pair of biggest pants in the closet. I refuse to go out and buy me bigger clothes when I have all this smaller clothes in the closet. I will keep you all posted. Wish me Luck!
Ann
AskDocWeb: We do wish you the best of luck Ann. And you can increase that luck by following your doctor’s instructions, make the changes to your eating habits, and increase your physical activity to burn off that extra weight.
Subj: Hip joint pain
Date: 5/14/2010
I started taking Phentermine about a month ago. After a couple of days I started having severe pain in my R-hip & knee. I didn’t associate it with the Phentermine. I stopped taking it & my joint pain went away (although still didn’t associate the two). I started taking it again two days ago & already my hip is starting to hurt again. I’m pretty sure since this is the only drug change I’ve made that it’s the Phentermine that’s causing my pain.

Subj: Questions about Phentermine
Date: 5/15/2010
I had used this drug before when my Doc. was alive. Since then he has passed. I took a pill I found the other night to help me saw awake for finals in school. (26 yrs. old) and I am currently going to pain mtg. also. I seen where it takes 2 weeks to leave your system. I have only taken one pill, that was over 2-3 years old (same effect as before too) and I am in good physical shape and exercise regularly. I am 146.6 lbs. but allot of muscles. Will it be out of my system in 2 weeks like you said before, or since I sweat and work out on the reg. could it be out sooner. Also is this drug the same as METH in a drug screen?? I do not do that backyard make killer of a drug, but I did some research and wonder is it in the same family as phentermine? This is so important to me, and I know I made a mistake as soon as I took the med. that was old. Will not and destroyed the other 2 I had left also. I also wondered, is this something that doctors do not like to prescribe anymore, and is legal to buy without a prescription in the US. I seen so many places to buy it, but I do not want to and get in trouble! Thanks for the info. I know there are lots of Q’s here, but I really am curious.

AskDocWeb: Phentermine stimulates the nervous system like the amphetamines. It works by stimulating the hypothalamus and affects certain neurotransmitters that decrease appetite. Phentermine has been reported to sometimes show up as a false positive for Amphetamines on urine drug tests (References 3, 4, and 11). Most of it is out of your system in a couple of weeks but some Phentermine can stay in the body for up to a month after stopping. If it does show up on your drug test you may have to get a GC/MS confirmation test to correctly identify it. In order to buy this drug legally in the USA you must have a prescription from your doctor.
Subj: Phentermine with Tenuate?
Date: 5/15/2010
I am currently taking 15mg of Phenteramine daily (morning) for weight loss. Would it be safe to add a 25mg tenuate in the late afternoon to help control my hunger. Would there be any drug interactions between the two?
Robin
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any drug interactions listed for Phentermine and Tenuate but you would have to check with your doctor to find out if it would be safe for your particular situation. Please discuss this with your doctor.
Subj: Nursing?
Date: 5/15/2010
My doctor prescribed Phentermine to me, I took it for three days, but continued to nurse, Is my son going to be ok? My doctor did not tell me to stop nursing, but now I am going to stop with the pills until I stop nursing, but should I be concerned about the times I did nurse while taking the pill? thank you,
Nicki
AskDocWeb: It is not known how much Phentermine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Because Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system it may cause tremors, agitation, decreased feeding, or any other side effect listed for this drug. Read more feedback from users.
