Subj: Moody and irritable
Date: 6/9/2010
Hi, I have been on phentermine 37.5 since 6/04/10. My doctor prescribed it because I weighed 314 lbs. The first 2 days, I was sick. I was nauseated and very tired. Since then I feel pretty good. I don’t have much of an appetite and I feel the weight melting off. However I am moody and irritable. I also don’t have the energy everyone else talks about. I walk 30mins a day and I have 4 children under 10 and a husband. Are any of these reactions normal?
Tora
AskDocWeb: A few people have reported mood swings with Phentermine. Changes in mood should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Utterly delighted
Date: 6/9/2010
I have taken Phentermine for about 2 months, and I lost 24 pounds. I felt great for the first time in a long time. I had so much energy! I did get the dry mouth and some bad headaches, but that passed after the first week. The only major side effect I noticed was a rise in excitability, which also passed after a week or so. I also noticed a decrease in cravings for sweets. In fact, I drank so much water, that even soda lost it’s appeal to me. I went from drinking anywhere from 6 to 10 sodas a day to drinking maybe 1 soda every other week. I’ve noticed that I no longer have constant heartburn or acid reflux (due to cutting down on sodas). So far, I have been utterly delighted with my experience with Phentermine. I have had no truly bad experiences to completely sway me from taking it.

Subj: UTI or bacteria infections?
Date: 6/10/2010

Summer
AskDocWeb: Difficulty urinating is listed as a possible side effect of Phentermine that should be reported to your doctor but UTIs or bacterial infections have not been associated with this drug.
Subj: Constipation
Date: 6/10/2010
I have been taking phentermine for about 7 weeks lately I have severe constipation, sometimes as long as two days without a bowel movement. I took a couple of ex-lax but it took another day for a bowel movement, is this a side effect of phentermine, if so, should I stop taking it. It has been very effective for me, I’ve lost about 24 lbs.

Subj: Injured my lower back
Date: 6/10/2010
I have had a few ailments recently and I wondered if they were related. I have lost about 130 lbs over a 18 month period, by diet and exercise. Recently while doing dance areobics I injured my lower back, this happened about 6 weeks ago. It is still painful, especially in the morning. I have also recently had stomach ailments such as constipation, I have also had blurry vision recently. I have done some research on this and it appears they could be related. I do not have any other symptoms and I am otherwise in very good health. Any ideas? Thanks.
Bruce
AskDocWeb: Wow, that is a lot of weight to lose, congratulations Bruce. After making such a drastic change it would seem to be a good idea to get a complete medical exam. That way you could find out for sure rather than guessing.
Subj: Dizziness, dry mouth and constipation
Date: 6/10/2010
I starting taking Phentermine on 5/17/10; As of today 6/10/10 I am down 20 pounds. I find it hard to make myself eat the 1,200 calorie doctor recommended diet. On most days I can only eat 800-900. My doctor is also giving me two lipoplex shots per month. I have lost 5 inches in my waist, 3 in my hips, 2 in my bust, 1/2 on my thighs and 1/2 on my bicep. I am wearing clothes that I haven’t worn in a few years and have gone down two sizes. My doc will only allow me to take for 4 months, then you have to take a month off. I hope to lose at least 40 more by the end of the four months. The only side effects I have experienced are occasional dizzyness, dry mouth and constipation.

Subj: Sudden halt in weight loss
Date: 6/11/2010
I’ve been taking Phentermine 37.5mg for about 7 months now and total I’ve lost around 25 pounds. Im still about 20 pounds away from my goal weight but over the past few months, I feel the medication has not been working at all. I have stopped taking it for about a month now but my question is, if I start taking them again will I begin to see weight loss or not? I still have 2 more months left on my perscription but want to know if it’s really pointless for me to continue them if I will not see anymore results. Although I have a sudden hault in weight loss, I must say that it is a very good medication to help anyone who is at an unhealthy weight. At the time my mother past away, I weighed 192 and today im at 168.

AskDocWeb: As with most diet pills, the body has a tendency to build up a tolerance for the drug and when that happens, it stops working. Sometimes taking a break for a few weeks will work but the body is likely rebuild that tolerance even faster the second time. When it stops working then that is the time to check back with your doctor for possible alternatives.
Subj: Vaginal itching
Date: 6/13/2010
have there been any reports of vaginal itching? I have been on phentermine for 1 week and i have horrible itching..nothing seems to sooth it and dr. says test results came back normal.
Ek
AskDocWeb: There has only been one report (to this forum) of vaginal itching but that turned out to be caused by a yeast infection (itching and chalky discharge).
Subj: Never again!

I took my first phentermine tablet yesterday and I WILL NEVER touch the stuff again!!! My partner takes it for weight loss and I decided to try one (30mg) as I was feeling quite tired and just out of curiosity really. Anyway, took the pill at around 1pm yesterday. It is now 24 hours later… I have not slept at all and have eaten 2 weetabix in 24 hours, wide awake, jittery, heart beating extremely fast, nervous, depressed and feel like I am on the “come down” from hell. Phentermine has the same effects as amphetamine (speed, sulphur etc) I know this from experience as I tried a few “choice substances” in my teens… Not a good way to feel and definately not a good way to lose weight as it messes with the balance of your brain and as soon as you come off it you will gain your original weight and probably more. I am 32, never dieted in my life, have a 9 year old child and weigh 110 pounds. I think this is because I have never dieted, eat quite healthily and in moderation. I also try to walk whenever I can. Do yourself a favour and adopt a healthier lifestyle rather than rely on these drugs that will end up seriously messing up your mind and body.

AskDocWeb: Oh Debbie, please remember that taking someone else’s prescription drug is not only illegal, it is dangerous.
Subj: Increased libido and energy
Date: 6/18/2010
Phentermine is great! It not only helped me lose 30lbs over the course of 8 months, which is slow compared to most, but it also increased my libido, helped my marriage and gives me the energy to run my household and maintain my job. Before taking Phentermine, I could not put my head on the pillow for ten seconds and I would be sleeping! It did not matter how hard I tried. My husband took it personally. Since beginning taking Phentermine, I am able to stay up as long as I need or want! I lost weight, I can stay awake at the wheel (which is always good). I have motivation and drive to clean and be intimate with my husband as much as he wants! I feel great and move better. Even pain I had been experiencing has gone away. Inflammation in my fingers, and other joints! I love it!

Subj: Sleepy and exhausted
Date: 6/18/2010
I took phentermine for 2 days, felt so sleepy and exhausted, basically could not function?!
Ruta
AskDocWeb: You may want to check with your doctor because that is not the typical response to Phentermine.
Subj: Hair loss
Date: 6/19/2010
Years ago I saw a bariatric physician & he Rx’d phentermine & the medafast diet(I was insulin resistent). I had great results, except I lost weight too quickly which I knew increased the statistics for gaining it right back!(I lost 60lbs in 2 1/2 months!) I began loosing my hair, & was weak & the smell of food made me ill (I was no longer on the phentermine). Through making myself eat protein powder & vitamins I slowly pulled out of it & my hair rethickend. The good news I kept my weight off for over 7 yrs.!
Well after another pregnancy, age, degenerative disc disease, my exercise level had dropped & I gained the 60 lbs. back. I now have type II diabetes, need a r/ knee replacement,(@ 46 yrs. old!), have had a neck fusion…& need 3 more! So I went back on the medifast diet, & phentermine & began walking before my next scheduled surgery. I lost about 10 lbs before I went in for my next neck surgery & took my medifast w/me to the hospital- I was in soooo much pain I could hardly eat & lost 30 lbs in 2 weeks, though it brought my blood sugar, high blood pressure, & made my joints feel better, I began to loose hair like crazy! Not in patches, but the hair follicle or shaft is on the end so it’s not breaking- root & all is coming out! I wasn’t too concerned at first as I’ve got thick hair, but now it’s hitting 6 almost 7 months & over 50% is gone!
I went to my primary doc & he is sending me to a derm that specializes in alopecia. I’ve already been under more stress than ever, & this is freaking me out! I noticed The American Hair Assoc. states that “amphetamines” cause hair loss? Where I’d assume it’s the surgery which was very traumatic (in hospital for 5 days as pain could not be managed), & than the quick weight loss & stress? What do you think? All’s I want is for it to grow back & I will never complain about my hair being too thick again! Any help or thought on the subject will be most appreciated-my appt. w/ the alopecia derm isn’t for 3 more wks, she’s the only specialist in our entire State of Oregon! Thanks for your help!

AskDocWeb: About six years ago we put together a list of drugs that cause hair loss. And yes, amphetamines may cause hair loss in two ways: 1) By decreasing blood flow to scalp, 2) By increasing serum testosterone levels, which in turn raises levels of DHT. Read more feedback from users.
