Subj: Eating 6 times a day
Date: 6/20/2010
Before taking these pills I use to eat 2 big meals a day. When I started these pills I started eating 6 times a day but it was little portions that equled one of my big meals. The first 10Days I lost 10 pounds. the next 10 days I lost 7, but I was on vacation and not being as healthy as I was the first 10 days. And eating just 2 meals when I got supper hungry right now I’m getting back on track.

Subj: Phen phen
Date: 6/22/2010
is phentermine and phen phen the same thing???
Amalitsa
AskDocWeb: No, Fhen-Phen was a combination of another drug, fenfluramine hydrochloride, along with phentermine hydrochloride. These two stimulants both promote weight loss by reducing appetite. That combination is no longer available due to its damaging of the heart’s valves. This is one of the reasons why it is important for a patient who has a history of using this medication to get a cardiac screening to check for risk of bacterial endocarditis.
Subj: Phentermine makes me tired
Date: 6/23/2010
I have been using phentermine 37.5 for a few mths to help with my weight loss. It makes me tired as soon as I take it no matter what I’m doing I want to sleep. My dr told me it was an adverse reaction. I never took any kind of diet pill be4 and I don’t like to have a speedy feeling so I’m kinda glad it makes me tired because it helps a lot. I think it speeds my metabolism up, I lose way more weight taking it then I do without it. I go to the gym 5 days a wk n eat right I have lost 40 plus so far. I never heard of anyone but me getting tired from this…am I normal? LOL
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: That sounds like a good tradeoff between side effects and benefits. A few people have reported fatigue so it is not all that unusual.
Subj: Phentermine and thyroid
Date: 6/25/2010
I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My numbers at DX were TSH 6.46. I am now on 50mg of Synthroid. Will Phentermine affect my thyroid, making the TSH change?
Debbie
AskDocWeb: Thyroid problems are listed as one of the things to tell your doctor about before taking this drug. You may or may not be able to use Phentermine but if you do you may need to keep a close watch on things.
Subj: Change in blood sugar
Date: 6/28/2010
I took phentermine for 1 month and I found that it was not for me. I lost 11pds but my blood sugar went to 277 my blood pressure went borderline. I had a irregular heartbeat, and I was always dizzy. Trust me its not for everyone. but it really keeps the appetite down.

Subj: Potassium levels
Date: 6/30/2010
I am a nurse and I have been taking Phentermine for two years off and on. I did land in the ER! My potassium levels had fallen! Phentermine lowers your potassium. POTASSIUM REGULATES MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS AND YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE! So yes you can die from taking Phentermine if you don’t watch your potassium. I got really weak. Pay attention to the muscle spasms or twitches. BUT DON’T TAKE TO MUCH POTASSIUM EITHER! I take a supplement that has 2mg in it once a day. The twitches went away. PLEASE BE CAREFUL I CANT SAY ENOUGH POTASSIUM CAN BE DANGEROUS IF YOU TAKE PHENTERMINE. TAKE A SUPPLEMENT ONCE A DAY REALLY 2MG IS ALL YOU NEED TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LOSS WHILE ON THE DRUG! YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO CHECK YOUR POTASSIUM LEVELS IT IS A QUICK BLOOD TEST.

Subj: Severe memory loss
Date: 7/2/2010
Memory loss with Phentermine: This is the second try with Phentermine. I’m taking 1/2 of the 37.5 mg small white pill daily. I hesitated to use it again because of a noticable change in memory, especially short term – long term. It is pretty severe with me, so I will again need to discontinue the medication. (I do not have memory difficulties when not on the medication.)

Subj: This terrified me
Date: 7/5/2010
I have been taking phentermine on and off for the past couple of weeks. I received the pill on Saturday and by the following Thursday I’d lost 10 pounds. This terrified me because I hadn’t started exercising and I could feel my breast deflating like balloons loosing air. So, I discontinued use and gained back about 3-5 pounds within a couple of days. Today I took a pill and ate 30 minutes to an hour later and felt pain in my throat and have also been experiencing chest pains. I am going to go to my doctor as soon as possible because I want to be sure that the medication is not the cause.

Subj: Dry, painful eyes and blurred vision
Date: 7/5/2010
I have been taking Phen for 2 weeks and it does take my appetite. However, the worst side effect for me is the dry, painful eyes and blurred vision. I had to stop taking it because it has gotten so bad I keep headaches due to the eye strain.

Subj: Headaches
Date: 7/16/2010
I have been taking phentermine for about 1.1/2 months. I started out with dry mouth which has subsided a little but over the past 1 1/2 weeks I have had a persistent headache in my forehead that has not gone away. I have tried everything, claritin, excedrin, ibuprofen trying to get rid of it but it won’t go away. Can the phentermine possibly be causing these headaches? They are driving me crazy. I am not prone to headaches at all so I don’t know what is going on. Any suggestions?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Headaches are listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Hives
Date: 7/18/2010
I’ve been on phentermine now 8 weeks, have lost 25lbs so far still have 20 to go I’m now down to 179. Please tell me what I can do, broke out with a hive like rash that started on week 7 as just a few spots on my chest, thought it was ring worm. It’s not. It is now on my stomach, back, neck. I’ve started taking claritin 12hour and using a topical sarna it’s helped the itch, but still looks horrible. bought on line don’t want to stop taking the drug because its helping me get the weight off. Is there something stronger I can take to ease the hive symptoms until I’ve reached my goal, I figure only another 6weeks should do it. no other side effects. PLEASE HELP
Shelly
AskDocWeb: The patient information for Phentermine says that if hives are caused by this drug, it may require emergency medical attention. Please check with your doctor.

Date: 7/21/2010
I have been taking phentermine for about 6 months, and i am sorry to say with only a 10 lb wt loss. It decreased my appetite so much that i didn’t eat like i should. Now I am out of the perscription, so I decided to just quit taking it. now I am having trouble staying awake, Is this withdrawls from stopping this medication.

Subj: Lost 105 gained back 20
Date: 7/27/2010
I took Phentermine as directed for a year and I lost 105 pounds. I have found that I develop a tolerance faster if I drink large amounts of caffeine. After a few months on Phentermine I was able to start taking it every other day as my Dr. prescribed.
Since I have been off of Phenetermine (about 3 years), I have gained back about 20 pounds but I know this is because I spend less time exercising, and I eat fruit pies at 10 pm at night. I never had problems on it, but I took it as directed. I had to exercise some self control, but it certainly did make things easier. Just tell yourself that you have to get up and walk everyday.once you get to the end of your driveway, it wont be as hard to keep going. Like anything else, I took the wight loss one day at a time. You can do it!!

Subj: Cough and sore throat
Date: 7/27/2010
I’ve been taking phentermine 37.5 for 7 months now and this is actually my last week (hopefully I loose the 5 lbs to reach my goal) usually I take half the pill in the morning and half in the evening. I’ve been coughing and I also have a sore throat so my chest hurts from breathing. I don’t know what to do should I continue to take the whole pill or just half? It’s too late for me to consult the doctor who prescribed the meds.
Vera
AskDocWeb: The patient information for Phentermine says to avoid “stimulant” drugs that may increase your heart rate or blood pressure such as caffeine and decongestants. Many common over-the-counter cough medicines contain decongestants.
Subj: High blood pressure and tachycardia
Date: 7/27/2010
I loved the phentermine when I took it. I lost 70 pounds in 6 months. I was extremely over weight. The phentermine amazed me when I – myself- could turn down food. Just had no desire for it. That was great! But then I ended up with high blood pressure and tachycardia. I thought it was the phentermine…am I right?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: It is possible, both tachycardia and elevation of blood pressure are listed under the side effects of Phentermine.
Subj: Don’t Be A Victim
Date: 7/29/2010
I’ve been taking Phentermine for about 4 weeks. I’ve never had so many problems. I’ve had my period for 3 weeks. I’m on birth control DEPO shot to prevent cyst on ovaries. It’s always controlled that. Now my cyst are back and so is my period which tells me that my birth control is no longer effective. I get dizzy spells, blurry vision, headaches, disoriented at times and when I’m sleeping I notice I periodically take a deep breath. I’m quitting this pill because this site confirms alot. Phentermine is not worth all these side effects and not worth long term side effects. In a few more years they will make this pill illegal cause of the harm it’s caused Don’t Be A Victim.
