Subj: Going off Phentermine
Date: 8/23/2010
How long will phentermine stay in your system as far as a drug test goes? Will going off it cause nausea and depression? I have no interest in anything anymore.
Anne
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Phentermine ranges from 16 to 31 hours, which means that it could take up to 7 days for the drug to completely clear your system. Physical and psychological dependence may occur with long-term use of Phentermine. There is a possibility of a withdrawal reaction, which could include excessive drowsiness, fatigue, tremors, and depression. Please talk with your doctor before stopping.
Subj: Anger issues
Date: 8/24/2010
Question: I’ve been taking Phen off and on for 10 months and I’ve noticed I have anger issues, is this a side effect? Also, I am taking the 37.5 version, can I just break them in half to wean off of them?
Beatrice
AskDocWeb: Irritability, agitation, and mood changes are listed as possible side effects of Phentermine. There are many reports of people breaking them in half with no ill effects although your doctor is able to prescribe smaller dosages to help wean off of them.
Subj: Headaches from not drinking enough water
Date: 8/25/2010
I took phentermine 30mg to loose those last stubborn 10lbs, and the only side effect I noticed was headaches if I did not drink enough water. What I noticed most about this drug was that I still had an appetite(although not as strong) but I had the will power to say no to snacking and goodies. Phentermine made it much easier to make good food decisions. Good luck to all who take it.

Subj: What needs to be monitored?
Date: 8/27/2010
My daughter and I went on a diet plan that my doctor prescribed. Phentermine was one of the medications he prescribed along with some other. I decided not to do the diet because the other drugs were making me sick. I am however taking the Phentermine. What lab work do I need to have monitored while on this medication?
Cheryl
AskDocWeb: That varies from one person to the next depending on your physical condition. Those with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, history of drug abuse, hyperthyroidism or thyroid problems may require special monitoring.
Subj: Hair loss
Date: 8/29/2010
I’ve been on this drug for about 4 months now and am starting to notice that I’m losing hair in the shower and when I brush. At the same time, I have switched to a generic form of Effexor (less than 1% suffer hair loss, acc. to my pharmacist). Is hair loss a side effect of this deug? Yikes! I feel great and have tons of energy, have slimmed down and really don’t want to give it up—-but I want hair too!
Kalei
AskDocWeb: Hair loss is not listed as an officially recognized side effect of Phentermine. However, others using Phentermine have reported hair thinning. It is also known that just the stress of dieting can also causes hair loss.
Subj: Atrial Fibrillation?
Date: 8/30/2010
I took phentermine for a month and a half with good results. However, while taking the medicine I developed Atrial fib. Could the pentermine cause it or was it just there when it happened.
Franklin
AskDocWeb: Yes, rapid and irregular heartbeats are listed as possible side effects of Phentermine. It may also aggravate an existing heart condition. That is one of the reasons why prescribing physicians check for heart conditions prior to writing a prescription.
Subj: Restart your body
Date: 8/31/2010
I was on phenteramine for 6months I lost 60lbs and have been off for about 6 wks they said you shouldnt take it no longer than 6 months at a time. I have gained 8lbs back but still have 40 more to lose is it safe to start back on it for 6 more months. It stopped working the last month I was on it I heard that you need to restart your body on it, is this true, I do not want to start back if it wont work or is dangerous.
Chrissy
AskDocWeb: While the body does lose some of the tolerance that it builds up over time, once the drug is discontinued, that tolerance has been observed to return even faster the second time the drug is used. Your doctor probably has better alternatives.
Subj: Out of body experiences?
Date: 9/2/2010
I started phentermine about a month and a half ago but for only 4 days… Within those 4 days i would get jittery, dry mouth, and have out of body experiences. I decided to take a break from the med and just started it again today. I am having several out of body experiences. Is this normal? Should I quit the med? Should I be worried? Do out of body experiences hurt you?
Danielle
AskDocWeb: Out of body experiences may or may not be hallucinations (how do you tell?), but they should be reported to your doctor because it could indicate a serious problem.
Subj: Side effects of Phentermine appetite suppressant
Date: 9/3/2010
After 1 week of being on Phentermine (1/2 before breakfast 1/2 before lunch), I noticed the jitters and my heart beating a little faster than normal both of which I expected. What I wasn’t expecting was the mucus that was getting stuck in my throat. I first thought it was “throat awareness” until one night I just kept trying to cough it up and eventually I did little by little.
My theory is that normally this time of year I’d be suffering from allergies and since Phentermine dries your mouth, it must dry your sinuses; however, it does not block the histamines so I’m still suffering with allergies, I’m just not expelling like I would have normally.
FYI: My doctor ran blood work to check everything out before putting me on Phentermine and all was well (cholesterol, thyroid, liver, kidneys) but my white cell count showed my allergy issues and I’m insulin resistant. I hope these annoying side effects go away soon so I can truly enjoy my experience because so far from Aug 1 – Sep 3 I’ve lost 20 pounds. I have at least 50 more to go. I’m also doing low-carb like a mild version of Atkins … mild because I don’t have the desire to eat as much as he suggested. I’m keeping a journal to show my doctor at my 6 week check up.

Subj: Heavy bleeding
Date: 9/4/2010
I have uterine fibroids and weigh 267 LBS. I tried phentermine (37.5) for just 7 days and started having an episode of heavy bleeding from my uterus. I was losing lbs really well — lost 11 lbs in just 7 days, but I’m afraid to take the phentermine without knowing what it is doing to me inside. Should I continue taking it? I noticed that you did say it can affect your menstral periods… but I don’t have periods anymore unless I take aspirin or drugs that are in the family of blood thinners. Is this a property of Phentermine?
Randi
AskDocWeb: Since you are having heavy bleeding you should check with your doctor and let him or her decide about continuing. Phentermine does not have the same blood thinning property as aspirin.
Subj: High blood pressure?
Date: 9/4/2010
i was wondering if phentermine caused me to have high blood pressure. I have been using it to lose weight for on and off for about a year. My blood pressure used to be normal and one day I checked it and it was 140/90 I immediately stopped taking the medicine and my pressure is still high but fluctuates from 130/85 and up to 138/88. is this a long term effect from using phentermine?
Natalia
AskDocWeb: Phentermine is known to cause an elevation of blood pressure but that is not just a long-term effect. It can happen right from the first use. And please note; Phentermine is not recommended for long-term use.
Subj: Multivitamins and coq10 pills?
Date: 9/8/2010
Is it safe to take phentermine with multivitamins or coq10 pills?
Carla
AskDocWeb: There are no adverse interactions listed between Phentermine, multivitamins, and coq10 but as always, make sure your doctor knows about all over-the-counter supplements you are taking.
Subj: Trying to have a baby
Date: 9/12/2010
Hello, If I am trying to have a baby is it ok for me to take these pills until i find out I’m pregnant?
Nikita
AskDocWeb: Pregnancy is one of the things that should be discussed with your doctor before taking Phentermine.
Subj: Long-term effect?
Date: 9/12/2010
I started taking phetermine 37.5 two months ago and it has stopped working. I have lost 21lbs, but now my weight has been the same for two weeks and I am hungry all the time. In the beginning the phetermine helped curve my appetite and I ate small portions, but now i am eating more like before. Should I stop taking the pills for a week and try again or try something else? Also with the phetermine I sleep well, but am fatigued all day and i get stressed easily. I guess you can even say its anxiety or panic, but my question is, do you think I will have a long term effect? I had the problem before, but now it’s very bad.
Leslie
AskDocWeb: If used as directed, a long-term effect is unlikely. The body has a tendency to build up a tolerance for diet drugs, which is why they are used only short-term. At that point it is time to talk to your doctor about alternatives.
Subj: Couldn’t think clear and insomnia
Date: 9/14/2010
I have been taking phentermine for 4 weeks and I have lost 16lbs. It does take some getting use to. My first week I couldn’t think clear or really hold a conversation I felt buzzed out. After that I could function fine other than the trouble sleeping. I can go to sleep but only for a couple of hours then I’m up ready to go. I am starting to feel very sleepy through out the day. And it’s effecting my mood. My doc says to try taking omega 3 and something to help me sleep as well to take in plenty of fiber to help with the side effects.
