Subj: How much water is enough?
Date: 2/13/2011
I have taken Phentermine for two days. The first day I took it, I took half a pill at 7 am and the other half at 12 pm. I fell asleep around 10 pm and woke up around 2 am and was unable to go back to sleep until 4 am. I assumed it was from splitting the pill. The second day I took the pill I decided to take the whole pill at 8 am hoping to avoid the interupted sleep. Well here I am at 1:40 am up since midnight. I know this is different from person to person, but how long can I expect to be on this cycle? And how much water is enough? Each day I must have consumed at least twenty 8 oz cups of water and still thirsty. I haven’t had anything else to drink.
Renee
AskDocWeb: The body needs water in order to lose weight. If the body does not receive enough water (1-2 quarts a day), it will start retaining water, which could cause a net gain in weight. This causes the liver to cease metabolizing fat at its normal rate. Without enough water the metabolism slows to a point where the body stores fat and water until it starts receiving the proper amount. If you are significantly overweight (50-100lbs), you may need to add more than just the minimum daily amount of water to your diet. Some experts agree that the intake should be another 6 to 8 ounces of water for every 10-20 pounds that you are overweight.
For most people the extra energy that interferes with sleep only last from a few days to a week.
Subj: Hives
Date: 2/13/2011
I started taking phentermine on Monday and the first two days I felt very energized. It is now Sunday and I dont feel energized anymore and loss of appetite is not a great as it was the first two days. Should I take more than one pill in the morning. Also I have a break out of hives on my body. I’m not sure if it is from the medication or tanning? If from medication should I still be taking it?
Missy
AskDocWeb: If you think you are breaking out with hives, seek immediate medical attention. This could be serious. Hives are one of the symptoms of an allergic reaction and that may be life threatening.
Subj: Vomiting
Date: 2/13/2011
I just started taking phen 37.5 yesterday, and so far I just throw up 45 min after taking the pill is that normal?
Shanea
AskDocWeb: No, vomiting is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Difference between phentermine capsules and tablets?
Date: 2/14/2011
Is there a difference between the phentermine 37.5 capsules and 37.5 tablets? I’m taking phentermine for the 2nd time. the first time i took the tablets and had great results with diet and exercise. i started the capsules last wednesday, and feel completely different. My appetite is not there, but I have only lost 1/2 a pound in 6 days.
Suzanne
AskDocWeb: Some people find the capsules easier to swallow but both have the same active ingredient, phentermine hydrochloride. Each 37.5 mg capsule of Phentermine contains the following:
- D&C Yellow #10 Aluminum Lake
- FD&C Blue #1 Aluminum Lake
- FD&C REd #40 Aluminum Lake
- Gelatin
- Lactose Monohydrate
- Magnesium Stearate
- Talc
- Titanium Dioxide
- FD&C #2 Aluminum Lake
- pharmaceutical glaze
- propylene glycol
- silicon dioxide
- sodium lauryl sulfate
- synthetic black iron oxide
- D&C Red #33
Each 37.5 mg tablet of Phentermine contains the following:
- FD&C Yellow #6 Aluminum Lake
- FD&C Blue #1
- Magnesium Stearate
- anhydrous lactose
- colloidal silicon dioxide
- corn starch
- microcrystalline cellulose
- pregelatinized starch
- stearic acid
- sucrose
The 37.5 mg tablets are scored to make splitting them easier, or a pill splitter can be used to break the tablets in half whereas the capsules are not designed to be split.
Subj: Irritable when on Phentermine
Date: 2/15/2011
I was taking phentermine 37.5 on and off for over a month, but I have stopped it. I have lost weight, but I am very irritable when I’m on it, and when I’m off of it I experience short-term memory loss.

Subj: Phentermine after surgery?
Date: 2/15/2011
I been taking Phentermine for almost 4 months and lost 35 pounds. My question is I have surgery in 2 days and I was told in pre op not to take this medication anymore until after surgery. The nurse asked the anesthesiogist if it was okay to be off Phentermine for ony 3 days. He said it was ok. I Now I’m concerned after researching this. Also I read it wasn’t good to take the pill after surgery is that true? Thank you.
Kristie
AskDocWeb: The concern with taking Phentermine during surgery has to do with it making the anesthesia less effective. Phentermine is NOT known to interfere with the healing process.
Subj: Bad experience
Date: 2/16/2011
I have been taking Phenterimine for almost two months now and lost 15 lbs. However, I recently developed hives all over my body. Not sure if its the medicince but I have quit taking it. Also noticed bad chest pains, pain in arms and legs, dizziness, horrible headaches. Do not recommend taking this pill. Best to lose weight the natural way.

Subj: Painful bumps on tongue
Date: 2/17/2011
I’ve been thankfully losing 2 pounds per week with phentermine 37.5mg. Been taken it about 2 months now. I’ve been chronically “sleepy” my entire life, even through childhood. My thyroid tested normal recently. My O.B. is trying to get me to lose weight to easy my stress incontinence issues with my weak bladder. I’ve actually stayed awake all day, everyday I take it. It’s been an answered prayer for me for energy, but also appetite/portion control! Sadly though the end of my tongue is covered with tiny painful “bumps” & the inside of my lower lip is dry & looks cobblestone like. I’ve oddly had numerous bladder infections recently also.
The doctor thought my mouth issue might be either viral or yeast/thrush (due to rocephin injections) to treat infected bladder. Thrush tablets sadly did not cure problem. I’ve never had a “viral” outbreak on my tongue tip or inner lip area. It dawned on me it might be the phentermine. I am sooo sad because I found something that I thought answered my prayers for stimulant & weight loss help. I quit taking it for 5 days because I didn’t want to mix it with some pain & muscle meds after a bad car crash. During those days the mouth issues subsided 50-75%. I took one the other day after I quit the temporary meds for pain & muscle soreness. The mouth problems sadly started up again & now my tongue & lip is raw & very painful! Is there another similar drug I might ask my doctor to try? I don’t see him for another month. My bladder, husband, family, & life will thank you for recommending something else. Thanks!
Crystal
AskDocWeb: The problem with taking a similar drug is that you may have a similar reaction. Have you talked to your doctor about Xenical?
Subj: Phentermine

AskDocWeb: Are you asking a question or making a statement?
Subj: Gallbladder removed
Date: 2/19/2011
Hi everyone i just have a question? can i take phentermine if i had my gallbladder removed? I have taken phentermine before, the first time i took it was after my first baby which i gained 60 pounds (no lie) i started at weight 220 pounds and lost 75 pounds..but now im back to 220 after my third baby. Please answer my question. Thanks.
Nancy
AskDocWeb: It is not known why some people have problems with their gallbladder and unfortunately there is no way to prevent it. The risk factors for developing gallbladder problems include pregnancy, high cholesterol, certain medical conditions (such as sickle cell anemia), and what is important here, obesity and rapid weight loss. Gallbladder problems are not listed among the contraindications for Phentermine but whether or not it is safe for you to take now is a question only your doctor can answer.
Subj: My tongue goes nuts
Date: 2/20/2011
I have taken Phentermine on and off over the years. The past 3 months, every time I start taking it my tongue goes nuts. It’s numb on the end and red. It feels like I have burned it. Now the burning numbness is spreading a little further up my tongue. I also clench my jaw. I stopped a month ago and it went away so I started back up a week later. It didn’t totally go away that time even after a week. So, 3 days ago I started again (I always start with a 1/2 for the first week) and my tongue is crazy with the numbness and burning. You can even see it’s a little redder and a little rougher on the end. I drink plenty, I don’t do anything to make it worse~ It’s obviously the Phentermine. I guess it’s just not for me because it’s bad enough to be a little scary. I didn’t take one today and I’m going to stop. UNLESS you know of a cure? I’ve tried the tabs and the capsules but both do it, Sad.
Cindy
AskDocWeb: Sorry to hear about your burnt tongue. Some people refer to that as Burning Mouth Syndrome. Unfortunately it is one of the possible side effects of Phentermine.
Subj: Ability to lose weight
Date: 2/21/2011
I stopped using Phentermine about 4 months ago. I joined Weight Watchers and began working out to help me continue losing weight. I have had extreme difficulty losing any additional weight since I stopped using Phentermine. Does the pill have any effect on someone’s metabolism or ability to lose weight once discontinuing use?
Rosemarie
AskDocWeb: Once you discontinue Phentermine your metabolism returns to normal, as does your ability to lose weight. If you haven’t talked to a nutritionist yet, that is something you might want to consider. They can be very helpful when it comes to finding good substitutes for unhealthy snacks and drinks. Those things can either sabotage your effort to control your weight or support it.
