Subj: Lost 52 pounds!
Date: 3/14/2011
Ive been taking Phentermine since Decemember. I’ve lost 52 lbs. Feels good, but after i take it my vision gets blury and sometimes headaches. Should i discontinue for a while and then return taking it after few months?

Marcia

AskDocWeb: You will need to check with your doctor because blurred vision is listed as one of the warning signs that should be reported. Losing 52 pounds is a major personal accomplishment, congratulations!

Subj: Pulmonary embolism
Date: 3/16/2011
If I have pulminary Embolisim can I still take Phentermine? I need to lose weight and my metabolism is very slow.

Judithann

AskDocWeb: That seems unlikely because Phentermine has been linked to blood clots in the lung. Your doctor will be able to tell you the safest way for you to lose weight.

Note: A pulmonary embolism is the blockage of a lung (pulmonary) artery by foreign matter, fat, air, tumor tissue, or by a blood clot.

Subj: My feet cramp up
Date: 3/16/2011
I started taking Phentermine when I went on the HCG diet. I take it on and off now and just started noticing some side effects recently. Not 100% sure if these side effects are caused by the Phentermine but I am not sure what else would cause them as I am not on any other medications other than birth control, which I have been on for 3 years. I have noticed that my feet cramp up a lot at the gym and at night. My foot will actually almost freeze and feel really painful. I will have to stand up and walk around. This could be caused from a potassium deficiency or dehydration I know, so I try to stay hydrated. I also have started to feel slightly depressed (major insomnia recently, disinterest in activities, sadness) and I am usually a very happy person.

Subj: Commit to a lifestyle change!
Date: 3/17/2011
I have taken the generic Phentermine on 4 separate occasions over a 10 year period. I will say to everyone currently taking it and thinking about taking it. Be sure you are ready to commit to a lifestyle change! If you don’t change your eating and exercising habits then you will gain all the weight and then some!
I recently had back surgery, and started exercising and eating healthier to pull weight off (it’s very bad to carry extra lbs. with my back problems). I just went back to the Dr. To help with my appetite, but I am totally committed to keeping this change in my lifestyle to have less back pain and to stay healthier for my daughter. I am 5’7″ and my weight after surgery was 235. I now weigh 223 and just began phentermine two days ago. Side effects for me are sleeplessness, slight moodiness, and dry mouth. Good luck to all… And myself 🙂

Subj: Phentermine overdose?
Date: 3/17/2011
Will it kill me if I continue to take a 37.5 mg pill and a half of another one at the same time in the same day? what specifically could be go wrong and what symptoms should I watch out for? I don’t want to stop. Also, I don’t eat during the day, and try to drink a lot of water, but it ends up to be mostly tea (just infused water, not anything else added). will that affect the medicine at all?

Betty

AskDocWeb: We encourage you to talk to your doctor about the effects of using an overdose of this drug. In some cases using that amount could be lethal. That means you can die from overdosing. The symptoms of an overdose include abnormal behavior, confusion, hallucinations, tremor, irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, panic, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures.

Subj: Intensity of side effects
Date: 3/17/2011
I have been on and off Phentermine since May of 2009. I just recently started up again after 3 months off. Right away, I had that feeling of needing a deep breath and not being able to get it. I flush and freeze alternately periodically during the day. I feel really anxious this time and I am having trouble sleeping. The side effects seem to have come on really strong compared to before. It definitely still curbs my appetite almost to the point to never being hungry but I’m not liking the intensity of the side effects. Can that happen over time? Will the side effects get worse after a few rounds?

Amy

AskDocWeb: Any difficulty breathing should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. Don’t wait to find out if it gets better or worse

Subj: My doctor won’t order phentermine for me
Date: 3/21/2011
I’m 30lbs overweight and my doctor won’t order phentermine for me. I have had to order it online. I had a good connection once and got down to a size 7. Now all I find are knock-off pills that don’t work. Where can I order online and be sure of the medication? The white pills with blue specks don’t work for me!

AskDocWeb: You left out the reason why your doctor will not prescribe this drug for you. Legitimate doctors will not prescribe Phentermine if the known risks outweigh the potential benefits. Taking this drug after your doctor said no to it may endanger your health.

Subj: Late period
Date: 3/22/2011
Am goin on two weeks useing phentermine and I lost 7lbs in one week. but am late with my period is this the phentermine doin this because I had my tubes tide n burn

chante

AskDocWeb: Several women have reported that Phentermine caused changes in their menstrual cycle and period. For some, their period came late, up to 10 days late, and others reported having two periods within four weeks. Being late with your period can be nerve wrecking but know that you are not the only one experiencing that side effect.

Subj: Lost 50 pounds!
Date: 3/23/2011
I have been on Phentermine on and off for 2 years, Over all i have lost 50lbs, i was off the first time for 6 months and then 4 more months until now because i am getting married this May. It does cause bad breath and blood in the stool both of these are side effects of not drinking enough water. The Dry mouth which is associated with the drug causes the bad breath and the blood is from dehydration (if it is bright red) as the stool is coming out it rips the inside of the anus resulting in the blood if its darker you need to see a doctor ASAP!

I had both of these problems the first time i was on the drug and consulted my doctor once i up’d my water intake they went away. i havent gained any weight back, it only works if you really change the way you eat so when you go off it your eating what your body needs. otherwise the weight will just come back.

Subj: Don’t want to end up hooked on Phentermine
Date: 3/23/2011
Hi, I am just curious. I am 25 years old and a mother of 2 and just always feel exhausted.., about a year ago a friend offered me a phentermine and said the energy it gives you is wonderful..I am 5’3 1/2″ tall and weigh 118, I have never been very big, but I take them now probably once a week or every two weeks to deep clean my house really good when I need the extra energy..I just dont want to end up hooked on them, and it does decrease my appetite but not enough for me to not eat, my friend will go all day without eating and I can’t. I eat smaller portions, but I still eat 2-3 times a day when taking them…Please let me know Thank you

Jo

AskDocWeb: There is almost no chance of getting hooked on Phentermine if you use it only once every week or two.

Subj: Phentermine before surgery?
Date: 3/24/2011
just checking to see what would happen if I took phentarmine 4 days before i had carpal tunnel surgery.

TRACY

AskDocWeb: Many anesthesiologists prefer that patients not be on Phentermine because of known affects on blood pressure during surgery. Remember that this drug is a stimulant, which can affect the amount of anesthetic required to produce the desired effect. It is important to discuss this with your surgeon prior to surgery. In some cases patients have had to reschedule surgery because the use of Phentermine was revealed at the last moment.

Subj: Concerned about depression
Date: 3/24/2011
i started taking phentermine 5 days and want to quit, it makes me feel great but I am concerned about depression when I go off of it. Can I just completely quit now even if its only been 5 days?

leslie

AskDocWeb: Depression is most often reported from those who stop using this drug abruptly following long-term use at high dosages. You will have to ask your doctor if the dosage you are taking is a high dose or not.

Subj: Miscarriage
Date: 3/25/2011
ive been taking phentermine for about a month now, everything was going well untill i got my period and was bleeding for 12 days more days that went by the heavier my bleeding was. when i finally went to see my doctor, she did a pregnancy test and it came out positive and she told me that im actually going through a miscarage. i didn’t know i was pregnant and was still taking the pills. do you think the pills were the cause of my miscarege?

Phapha

AskDocWeb: Phapha, sorry to hear about your miscarriage. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific drug is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

Phentermine has not been studied in pregnant women or animals although there have been a few reports of lung problems and stillbirths that may be related to phentermine use during pregnancy. Phentermine is chemically related to amphetamines, a group of drugs that has been shown to increase the risk of miscarriages. Since it is not known if phentermine is safe for use during pregnancy, phentermine is not recommended for pregnant women in general nor for women who are trying to conceive.

Answer update February 22, 2012Please note that the FDA has changed the pregnancy category for Phentermine from C to X because animal or human studies have shown that the risk of adverse effects on a fetus outweigh any benefit.
